how about a minecraft approach? pressing tab will bring up a player list menu (kinda like tetr.io+ pressing : bring up a emoji menu) that you can select
or a old minecraft / bash approach would also be nice (instead of bring up an extra menu, just dump all usernames into the chat (only visible to you))
this way it's way better than blindly pressing tab to cycles between all possible usernames (like command prompt autocomplete)
