I was playing just fine for a day, game crashed, got an update, now it says my save is from a previous version and may have compatibility issues. Cool, except it just doesn't load. At all.

@drifting garnet can you be more specific about 'it just doesn't load'? What happens, does it hang and you have to end task, does it give you an error message, etc.). If you are not going to provide the game files as the pinned comment suggests to help troubleshoot, you should at least provide details about what your experiencing since this is not the experience of many that are currently playing this early access game.

When it happened, I clicked load, and nothing happened. Restarted game, and it loaded, but the game is fundamentally broken now

yes it hangs during loading longer than usual and never ends with success.

Some have reported getting a crash notification: error "LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line: 684] hr failed at D:/Build/++UE4/Sync/Engine/Source/Runtime/D3D12RHI/Private/D3D12Resources.cpp:477 with error DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED with Reason: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG". Is this what your getting? If not what is the error message say?
