Lots of fun ideas:
Variable day and night length
No ore deposits, every or deposit just gives slightly more balanced levels of everything, like pure 10% except slag of course.
Randomly unlocked higher technologies even if it's just tier 1 or tier two, not all of them just pure random.
Being able to select what level of technology to start with / research.
Start with experimental super drones, that have extra speed or extra carrying capacity or something like that.
I just think the start should be a bit more forgiving in alpha, as there a good amount of bugs so it can be difficult to progress in the early game to test later game stuff. Ramp up the difficulty as we get closer to full release for sure.
I would go so far as saying one each of Fe and Si ore deposits nearby should be standard difficulty and a "true random" being hard mode only.
I agree with Fe and Si ore deposits starting closer to elevator, I had to hunt a bit for some Fe, wasting a lot of power using the Ore Detector (tho I only really had a Pressing Module running). Got closer than I would have liked to being critical on Steel
How about being able to choose, within reason, how many resources you start with
Cheaters! You all want to be cheaters, shame on you. I'm sending you all to the human organ factory <jk>
I am thinkin along the lines of difficulty settings:
Wuss
Low IQ
Casual Gamer
Somewhat Experienced
Beast
Einstein-esque
Can't Touch This
J/K but have difficulty levels, yes.
The hurt me level should give no notifications of anything.
I'm tempted to suggest naming the lowest difficulty Elon Musk but I'm guessing you don't want to get sued so...
"Can't touch this" would start you off with the exact amout of resourses needed to only progress on one purity path of perfection. 75% more energy expense. you WILL spend your first few nights with no power and it starts you off 3 sol's before night time. Repair events on machines are way more sporadic instead of a time per use thing it is now. you can fix it, then it can immedatly break again. robots can't move when out of power. the robots can break down too. Rovers included. underground ceiling supports are needed in this mode. Supports can be broken(Or destoryed by a machine breaking to close) and the roof cave in. Destroying everything in, and above the cave in. having to remine it with the above ground now being to unstable to build on. Drones and Rovers have complete hitboxes denying their ability to pass through each other.
It should be the equivalent of Randy random and be named Rocky road.:)
- Starting money amount is a big difficulty scaler, since with money you can just order whatever you want.
- High difficulty levels could forbid cargo landings until a few months have passed ("There's too much debris in orbit after the disaster, we need to wait")
- High difficulty levels could have a chance for cargo ships to fail during landing/takeoff, with the cargo being scattered or damaged (look how many rockets have blown up in real life)
