think i can tell you a bit of LM experience as someone that played for about one year with only 25$
beginning is hell. You will have hard time to buy shields because you are too weak to generate gems. Even the guilds that would accept you would be too weak to generate you gems through guild gifts.
So you will have to keep it low and safe, hide your troops and resources to your mates that you see they always shield (because there is always someone doing that). Shield whenever you can.
Either your guild evolves naturally or crumbles. A guild that evolved nice will get you nice guild gifts. Then you can generate gems and also stay shielded just nice.
This is my experience so far being in a decent guild. There are even better guilds with nice f2p players that give even better gifts

Recruiting within same kingdom is really only viable for restricted kingdoms tho. Most guilds are wary of same k apps expecting spies. People looking for a guild usually intend to migrate for it. So for that you'd want a safe and active but not overly populated kingdom.

Well populated kingdoms are either extremely new, full of bots, or have warring alliances. "Dead" kingdoms often spur more activity from the average folks because they aren't afraid to drop shield.
