Okay yeah that's right. If you are in a wedge and defender is in phalanx (with a frontline that counters you) when half your troops are down it retargets to their next squad instead of fighting the counter troops entire fight.

Phalanx is better to defend with so it is reasonable to expect an online defender to swap to counter frontline phalanx. The wedge where your troops are in the middle forces retargeting.

That's if you are backlining your blast troops for another buffer hit. Its the wedges people typically use to attack. But in order to force a retarget you would separate your main squad.
Range- Inf Wedge
Cav- Rng Wedge
Inf- Cav Wedge

The best formation to use will depend on the enemies formation which is not always easily known. The forms you posted are best when you are countering. The forms I posted are best when you get countered.

And specifically when you get countered by a phalanx
