As suggested remove the defense gems. If you have more cavalry pure gems, put one in weapon, cup, helm. Since you are most likely just a mix defense set. This will allow you more room to switch formations. We regularly zero 1.7b accounts with bad walls and improper gear combos.

I agree with pretty much all you said, with the exception for tassets over talons, depends on application of the gear. The hp on talons are pretty good too.
