Tassets are overall better if you just value the gear pieces based off their %ages. But sometimes talons work-out better for people who are needing more range in their mix. Or have them jeweled for inf range already and don't have more spare jewels. Tassets are only mostly used for an inf blast. Cav has garg belt. But talons are often used by low spenders for inf rng both and hence more prefered by those people for mix overlap

I can win ess24+ easily (40% morale left) with sane gear, but no jewels in the non-mix pieces.
The problem most certainly lays in the dn's you set, and in the familiars. Stacking fams being upgraded help out a lot.

You don't need balance stats at all to have a good defense. That assumption is just an oversimplification of playing it safe.
Having a balance allows you to swap fronts without worry of your frontline maybe slacking because it's low in stats.
But if my account is built to not worry about cav stats at all, (maybe only HP which I'll cover with army hp), then even a 992 set works for me.

But as a regular player, if you're following other strategies like avoiding overlap of material between your mix gear pieces and others, you naturally end up having stats that are fairly balanced if you put all 3 attack jewels in every piece.

This is an old meta mix. But it's pretty balanced with mixed jewels

Offhand --> lunar scimitar. It is equal (if not slightly better) than purple mitts. And is litteraly the cheapest offhand of the game.
Mainhand, don't change it. It is a good piece. But not worth the early venoms. Too late now so just keep it, for a future account do the tomahawk, cheap and good.
For chest piece, do the hell drider one. Nice army atk and cheap
For accesories, the lost island relic is great instead of that wyrm thing. And if lacking cav, for a future account, instead of drum do the tidal titan accessory

Why is your gear objectively a mistake?

1. The jewels, splitting a gold jewel (20%) for 4 purples (4×12%=48%) is the best option early on.
2. The main hand costs venoms, which are necessary for a bumblehelm. And which will be mandatory for a good lv60 gear. Same goes for offhand, you'll need the ultra rares for firewall plate.
3. the winter parka, same as for mainhand. Costs bells needed for winter mitts. But unlike the main hand, this piece is trash. It mainly gives defence stats, thus being less valuable than other pieces.
4. the drum and wyrm accessory. They give only stats for 1 troop type (cav and range respectively) this makes them a bad option for a mix gear. Drum is good for cav later on so it is a good piece for blast, the wyrm one just gets outclassed so quickly that you are better of using those jade orbs to get the wyrm crown up for your research% and for your range blast
