Range v range is really not going to "bend you over" - yes range does perform the best in a mirror or counter situation. But you can also have a garrison that forces your comp into inf phalanx if the lead doesn't play around it. I've taken range rallies in range wedge and very far from being "bent over"

Minimizing your damage taken from the least commonly used blast doesn't make much sense.
