IGG probably didn't implement it that way. Food production acts on its own, meaning it produces food and probably weakens the negative upkeep when vault is not full.

But when full, the Upkeep works 100% No matter the production.

Still, this is something to be tested / needs official answers

I don't really understand what you are trying to Say, but upkeep Can only be reduced by the champ chest, and the only reason why you would want to reduce your upkeep is to produce food right ? So you raise your food production until it exceeds the lost created by the upkeep, and then you are Always food positive no matter if your vault is full or not

Upkeep is the quantity of food your troops eat per hour, across the majority of your troops. If you have 1m t4, that means you have 4m upkeep per hour (so food deducted per hour)

If you have 25% upkeep reduction, that means it becomes 3m upkeep per hour.

Food production is completely unrelated to upkeep, and is the amount that you produce from food buildings per hour. Whether you have a champ chest or not does not affect this value.

Even a grey champ chest is generally better than a mythic food production chest in 99% of cases, unless you have literally no troops.
