its not "scaring them" the game incorrectly calculates your damage dealt on some moves where they are coded to be unable to deal less than 1 damage. in these cases it has to also be on a lethal damaging move which is quite rare which is why DoTs dont kill them. since tanuki clones have 1 hp it literally just kills them, which is the same case as killing through death shield

for frosts sake, the game is trying to "grapple" the enemy with her spike

because they blocked it, the game then makes it deal AT LEAST 1 damage, and it kills
