If the run doesn't start and the mk icon keeps loading (bottom right screen), you can restart and it should be fine - I did it many times.
Otherwise, if it's stuck like in a soft lock or the match has started, you're f@€£ed.

I usually restart the game at least twice or three times when I'm doing an elder fw

Finish any battle and if you see it starts to get clipping or slow, restart the game. I usually restart around battle 5/15, or 8/15, 11/15, and before 15/15. Unfortunately that's the only way not to lose a run.
I have to do that sh!t also in krypt recently. It's really annoying

When they first launched the faction war shop it had most of the equipment you see now, they've added 2-3 pieces of equipment later.
As for the characters I believe it was the same as now, except it was Circle of Shadow Liu Kang instead of Klassic Ermac. They however swapped them a few months prior to making him a diamond, as he was gold at first.
