freddy and leatherface are special imo, they are both unique. variation dont make a difference for me. freddy can teamed with mk11 noob, and gets more powerful lethals and criticals, leatherface can be good pair with noob or anyone that can stun, his combo ender also can have chance for lethals for 6s. i treat all characters the same, thats why i always brought them to lv 50, i play to that level on all of them, learn their weakness and strength.

If you save your souls and buy gold packs or diamonds you can get stronger characters to get more koins without wasting them on silver pack
