At the beginning of your adventure, it's worth remembering what will be most useful to you, namely, which effects will help you progress well and which warrior applies them.

There are some diamond characters that don't need fusion to perform well from the very beginning of the game.

One of them is the Mk11 Scorpion, which applies team fire. He'll help you fight on towers.

There's also Klassic Liu Kang, which can be very useful because it disables all enemies' abilities after switching fighters (cripple).

Gold Classic Ermac will help you fight tower bosses thanks to his "dark magic."

Also, keep in mind the kameos that apply snare and stun effects. This will help you slightly control the course of the battle.

There are a few more, but I don't want to write a book. Read what the characters do! Practice makes perfect.

Personally im on a similar boat with Brawly. I got only 2 fx diamonds but can clear fatals and khaotic krypts just fine. I stopped buying character packs as such since you get diamonds from towers. Rushing their FX will mean a lot of regretful sellbacks.
