Don’t be stingy. Just refresh them. It doesn’t say it but the last ladder with the dragon crystal reward give you 100 souls too. Also my strat is to do these challenges backwards if you can. Start at the last ladder and go back from there. That way if something prevents you from completing the whole challenge (like real life) at least you for the best rewards already.
