there was also a brush tool i really miss for the same reason!
Hard vouch. This was a godsend.
got it! it was removed because it was A) very buggy and hard to maintain B) newer users didn't use it very often and were confused by it.
I'll add it to our discussion list so we can revisit it soon, but I'm wondering if we can help solve this with a ton of setpieces, ie "forest setpieces" instead of a forest brush
personally not really, since its not just forests i used it for and that set pieces wouldnt be random
setpieces also currently do not have randomisation factored in, while the brush tool did
i showed a couple of people how to use the brush tool before and i think the main point of confusion was always how do you actually make a brush
since the functionality was kind of layered away and i dont think the tool itself explained that you had to
- make a group
- right click the group and make the brush
IF we could make our own set pieces and the set pieces could have the same/better randomisation the brush had, it would be better than the brush tool due to the ability to save the set pieces
To list a few things I used the brush tool for:
- Forests/Rainforests
- Flower beds
- Lawns
- Gardens
- Fields/Meadows
- Rock formations
- Ruins
- General messes for things like abandoned houses
and thats just what i remember off of the top of my head, since the brush tool has been gone for a bit now I'm sure I have forgotten a few use cases
The randomisation was just really the main thing that made it work despite it being kind of janky, it made things look natural with very little effort due to that
(Also to note, I have always had more issues using set pieces than I ever had using the brush tool, I don't think i personally encountered any bugs with it on the user side so I was kind of surprised to hear that was one of the reasons it was axed
Not saying the bugs didn't exist, just that it was kind of a surprise to learn)
I think having to get humans to generate setpieces doesn't help as much as just being able to very quickly fill an area.
If it can't come back in brush form, just telling omm "fill this X by Y map with stuff" and get a workable result would be very nice. Knowing you already have autotiles I wonder if you can take some tech from roguelikes to just create levels like they do.
yeah only way set pieces would work as a replacement if i could basically use them as a brush
For example, instead of having to create 20 rooms for a castle, I can just have the ProcGen tool generate them for me.
