#gen chat 2

quite often people in the general chat are very uh not welcoming? to new pepople, not necessarily rude, but just not welcoming
they have a completely different community, whereas so does #sv_discussion, itd be pog to have #1061716408699977798
Hand it over
and often newcomers come to #sv_discussion and chat a bit
instead of general chat
move general chat higher
and
make the chat less toxic
How do you suggest the chat be made less toxic?
more welcoming to newcomers
actually chill in general chat when something hasnt been reported 💀
yall never chill in chats unless someones pinged you, or #reports
I think that’s a valid point and while a majority of mods tend to stick to the helper community we originally come from, we don’t really hang out in general and instead tend to lurk a fair bit.
ive done more defusing of situations so they dont get to #reports than you within the last 24 hrs roughly obviously i cant deal with anything in report channel itself
not having a go at anyone, but im just saying it shouldnt really be the case
general is often way more toxic and uninviting then #sv_discussion yet #sv_discussion is often referred to as the pithole of the chats
W
and by you i mean the mod team, sorry i dont mean you specifically
bros got an essay going
I think it’s more so the thing that I’ve noticed and other users have noticed regarding the frequent mentioning of reports and anger surrounding being mentioned in reports, the often odd spin that conversations do tend to take and some of the behavior displayed by members, now could the same be said for general? Yes, but I guess the conversation is appropriate considering it’s a general chat and not a chat meant for a specific part of the game. And say we were to take the channel and rename it to general 2, I think there’s a chance it still might stagnate and be cliquey. Now of course, my analysis may be biased based on what I see in reports or when I peek in, so any other mod can chime in or frankly anyone else, but that’s my little snapshot. I will say that the staff has at the very least discussed the possibility and weighed merits of doing so.
damn
I’d rather take time to answer everything as openly as I can so we can really work towards a productive discussion.
i feel like it worked pretty well when it was general 2 for a while
^ it was fine as gen 2
people could talk about whatever
but when someone came to ask about scarlet violet
we still replied and helped them out
just make a new channel call it #general 2 and we done, keep #sv_discussion for those that talk abt pokemon, keep #general_chat for their community, and then the community in #sv_discussion that dont talk abt sv can go to gen chat 2
theres 2 communities in sv as it is, the regulars that dont talk abt sv, the ones that do
we cant go to #general_chat bc completely different communities, most of the people in #sv_discussion that frequent it are young adults/older teens whereas #general_chat is typically people in their late 20s +
hows eni typing but not even in the thread
o
General chat frequenter here, we'd love to have more people join in on the fun though
While I will say I do understand the sentiment behind the environment seeming unwelcoming at first because I was in that position once, and that unfortunately not everyone who comes to say hi is received, it would I think help to get to know us better instead of being dismissive.
(Threads are public until taken down and are in fact joined by typing and posting)
yep
it really isnt the same vibe
the only problem si with general chat, and i can vouch for this as im a gen chat frequenter, is that its not all that welcoming, with people ignoring others, its not necessarily rude, but the first message i sent in #general_chat was met with toxicity and accusations of being racism (i asked why was the phillippines spelt with a ph instead of f)
plus it doesnt help that juni and others can come off strong at first
its not even just that though, its more the fact that its 2 completely different communities because of age
stuff thats being talked about as well
Let me take a minute to go over this, I am slow
its fine take your time
im not saying i dislike gen chat, im just saying that bc of the 2 different age groups, its best to keep them apart, plus theres a lot of shit that happens in #sv_discussion that people in gen chat just wont tolerate and the reverse is true, such as gen chat talking about feet and whatnot. and with the amount of people in the server, i suppose its natural to need more than 1 general chat
Honestly i think the whole "people being ignored" thing can be chalked up to there being stuff already happening in the chat haha, i can understand where you are coming from tho
@gilded prairie read all dis
Already read, yeah.
ive noticed so many people come to #sv_discussion saying they got ignored in gen chat, and tbh thats why i frequent #sv_discussion, iirc @supple furnace also got ignored in gen chat
yeah
I will say that inherently, general chat is not the same vibe but that can always change if you contribute to the conversation and take it in a different direction. There's an ongoing joke about how we share the same braincell but frankly, there is a place for you there if you want to make one because not all of us are always on the same page.
A couple of us have talked to each other before, sharing reminders that newcomers won't immediately pick up on what makes us tick and to try and be a little more inviting, as well as friendly. People take that advice as they will, however, but the good news is that you don't have to be friends with everybody.
Age groups I'm not sure is a factor, we have a mix of minors and adults in both #sv_discussion and #general_chat. As far as inappropriate discussions go, there have been an influx of them in both channels. Honestly you can argue it's two sides of the same coin, I wish all of us would just calm down a little so this dispute wouldn't occur anymore, I find it fruitless
Stigmatizing anyone doesn't help anything
^
i think the issue is more people hardly know about general chat.apart from the people that know each other very well and use it frequently. (hence why it feels uninviting to new people) it’s all the way at the bottom of the list. when people join the server they probably don’t scroll all the way down. and join / see the general chat. everyone jumps into SV discussion because it’s where everyone talks because it’s where they’re most likely to get a response. i don’t think having a general chat 2 in the same place(under the social bar) would work or solve any issues as the only people that would use it is the people in this thread, and probably the people in general chat already. and then the same issue would occur again when more new people join. i don’t think you’re ever gonna be able to make sure everyone stays on topic in SV discussion considering how many people join and talk in this server all the time and probably do not read the rules very closely lol
My guess is that the last sentence is exactly what happened
what really
Off-topic discussion used to be welcome in there, even mods partook
But it stopped when it got too wild
oh i thought this was peaceful
kat often 'defused' the situation if that happened in scarlet violet discussion
It appears the staff reached an opposite consensus, to which I will move on and say that I do want to draw attention to a potentially bigger structure issue. Since the SV revamp we have had people scratch their heads a little and require a bit of extra redirecting (which isn't a problem per se), since a lot of beneficial tools are somewhat hidden (especially with the original public VCs being taken out, now that they are all hosted in the same place that list gets very long) like breeding and competitive discussion
It has lead to confusion in suggestions in fact about not having these channels, when in fact we do and they are not too accessible
