In GO, this is... mostly true.

But the CP formula is... interesting.

So it appears that some mons "lose" CP.

GoBaseHP = Floor(1.75*HPM+50)

Where AtkHigher is the higher of a mon's main series ATK base stat and SPATK base stat, with AtkLower being the same,
DefHigher and DefLower are the same thing,
HPM is Main Series HP,
And Spd is just Speed.

Then the preliminary CP is calculated; and if this is over 4000 at Level 40, they hit it with a 9% nerf to all three stats.

Then the final stats are calculated by:

POGOATK = (GoBaseAttack + Attack IV)*LevelMultiplier (*Nerfbat)
POGODEF = (GoBaseDefence + Defence IV)*LevelMultiplier (*Nerfbat)
POGOHP = Floor[ (GoBase HP + HP IV)*LevelMultiplier (*Nerfbat)], excepting Shedinja, which is forced to 1.

Then the final CP is calculated;
which is

Max( Floor[ POGOATK*sqrt(POGODEF)*sqrt(POGOHP)/10], 10).

So it's essentially just a meaningless number.

It is an indicator of how good the actual used stats are, but it's heavily weighted towards attack.

And additionally, the final part of this; that's very much overlooked by just looking at CP is how good a mon's moves are.

Lucario has a lower max CP than Machamp, yet is better in PVE, because Aura Sphere is a better charged move than Dynamic Punch, for example.

Aggron is one of the worst offenders of this.

3000 CP at MaxIVLevel40, fairly abysmal moveset, fairly abysmal attack;

Vastly outperformed by much lower level (and CP) Metagross and Rhyperior in Steel/Rock respectively.

The Nerfbat is also hilariously awful.

It's an arbitrary cutoff, based on an arbitrary formula they decided upon.

Assuming things stay as they are,

Zygarde, which has 100/61, 100/81, 100/91 Base Stats in Atk/SpAtk for 10%, 50%, 100% respectively,

Will actually have 10% with the highest attack in GO, followed by 50% closely behind, and 100% lagging in the rear.

Because 10% has high speed, so doesn't care about its unbalanced attack stats, 50% doesn't feel the nerfbat, and then complete just just gets hit with the nerfbat, so has a massive reduction.

CP isn't a good indicator of how good something is; and IVs matter far less than people think they do, especially on mons that are already good.

Even in PVP, unless there's a breakpoint you have to hit, or a CMP tie you have to win against a meta poke, anything that's ranked high in the possible IV chart will be good.

They still do matter, but they're not make or break for mons.

At most in PVE, for a 0/0/0 comparative to a 15/15/15, it's a +1.352 boost to a stat for a mon. It's about a 5% increase in attack for a Level 50 Mewtwo. Not inconsiderable, but also, when your attack's that big anyway...

Especially when talking the difference between a 14 and 15 attack Mewtwo. The difference is tiny.

Which is also why purifying powerful mons is a no no for PVE.

That extra 2 ivs (not even a full 15 like comparing a nundo and hundo), is not worth losing a 20% increase in attack.

To answer the original point though, some BST in GO may go down, if the attack stats go from very unbalanced to quite balanced, or if a lot of points go into speed in an evolution, and are taken from other areas, or if the evolution is hit by the nerfbat.

Which has a 5/6 chance of giving something good.

And a 1/6 chance of giving a Noibat.

just a question, may not be too popular. my morning coffee thoughts

so my town is small, less than 15000 people, but we have a decent number of gyms and pokestops

while my phone was broken and pogo wouldn't let me in, team mystic took over ALL the gyms. all of them. so naturally i am going to take at least 2 or 3 down and they are only going to get a max of 50 coins for the time their mons were in the gym. why do these groups feel it absolutely necessary to take over ALL the gyms? for 50 coins a day. it makes no sense!

it's so annoying, i hope i run into one of them and ask them why. but i'm also 31 with better things to do and most of them are young (i've seen their names and kinda figured out who they are and they travel in packs of 4 or 5)

in our town i'd say 80% of players are mystic, so they literally sit there. one is a youth pastor at a church so his gym is there, he is usually the only one in it and he sits there waiting on someone to come give him his coins, then immediately kicks them out and takes it back over. that one is smart. he works at a gym and is there every day and most people do not suspect a player to be at the gym 8 hrs a day 6 days a week. i fully respect that grind. ut turning the town blue for the sake of turning it blue, come on.

Hey it’s been a couple years since I’ve played pogo and I’d like to get back into it seriously. But I don’t know anything about what’s going on? Anyone have some “beginner” advice or tips to get the best mons and coins? I’m stuck at 350 item limit and it’s so annoying lol

Oh, weirdly enough, most people use normal type mons that can go big CP as gym defenders like Slaking, Snorlax or Blissey, trying to take down and get gyms is probably the only way to get coins ~~ aside of, of course, google rewards but that's another story, you should try it, it's good if you have to go out ~~

For the mons depends on what do you want them for, but you should always try to have some good ones for raiding. Lots of pretty good mons come through Community Days, which December one comes pretty soon when you get spawns from all year (this year's one was pretty good, specially since Gible if you need a decent dragon)

probably the best tip is that you don't power up mons like crazy, because stardust is pain and try to check around raid counters for the current legendary to see which kind of mon should be good to have

so you can save and power up those worth mons

I wholly agree with all of Aimee's post! Really useful stuff there!

Other useful tips are:

IVs don't massively matter, especially when you're starting out. Keep any mons with good IVs for later, your main focus should be on getting teams of 6 strong mons for raiding legendaries;

Don't fuss too much over Go Battle League; GBL takes up a lot of resources to get started, so wait until you have a fair amount of disposable stardust first.

Shadow Pokemon are stronger, glassier versions of their original selves; so keep any mons you find that are really good as shadows to power up later (As they cost more resources to level up).

Of the current rotation, that's Mudkip, Murkrow, Magnemite, Charmander, Swinub, Ralts (For Gardevoir), Dratini, Metang, and any and all Legendaries ever.

And most importantly, having high CP does not equal being good. Like Aimee says, check raid counters for the legendaries; (there'll be infographics posted here normally) as those will always be good, but elsewise, for a complete and somewhat exhaustive list; sort https://gamepress.gg/pokemongo/comprehensive-dps-spreadsheet by DPS^3*TDO, which is a fairly good indicator of what's good and what's not. Be aware you aren't able to get everything on that list currently, but you can sort by specific counters for legendaries or types, and filter by specific types or remove shadow pokemon (!shadow), mega pokemon (!mega) etc.

Some mons will be listed with what are called "Legacy" moves, moves that can only be obtained for limited windows of time. These are Community Day moves, Raid Day moves, and so on, that aren't available all the time.
