It's currently commonly theorised that there are 6 frequently used shiny rates;

Legendary Rate (1 in 20ish): The standard rate for legendaries, unless it's using the above.

Community Day Rate (1 in 24ish): The standard rate used on community days. Despite recent arguments on the matter, as far as I know, there's not satisfactory evidence to suggest that this has been decreased to make Comm Day shinies rarer.

Permaboost Rate (1 in 64ish): The standard rate used by Permaboost mons. This normally includes Raid-exclusive nonlegendaries, Alolan/Galarian formes, Baby mons and Shadow Shinies, alongside several "hard to find" mons like Feebas, Skarmory and Bronzor, although it should be noted that not all mons fitting the above description are Permaboosted. (For example, Rufflet and Alolan Rattata, which would elsewise fit the above, are both Base Rate shinies) This is also the "high" event boosted shiny rate, used for many mons on Go Fest 2021 Day 1, for example.

Mediumboost Rate (1 in 128ish): The standard rate used by Gible, Deino and Pokemon featured in Mega Raids (Charizard, Pidgeot, Slowbro etc). This is also the "mid" event boosted shiny rate, used for Aron during Hoenn Week 2021, Meditite during Valentines 2021, and Kricketot during Fashion Week 2020.

Base Rate (1 in 512ish): The standard rate used by everything else. If it isn't in one of the above, it's name isn't Meltan, Smeargle or Unown (Which get reshinylocked after the events featuring them end), and it can be encountered shiny, it's here.

It's also worth saying that it is heavily believed that shiny rates are consistent over encounter types. So if a mon is at base rate, no matter where it is encountered; eggs, raids, research, the wild etc, it will always be at that rate.

Yeah, being a good/bad mon in PoGo doesn't necessarily follow from being a good/bad mon in the main series games.

The other thing worth picking up from the wild are Beldums (For steel) and Magnemites (For electric).

Beldum needs a special move to be excellent as a steel type attacker, so keep a few good ones stockpiled for later. (That aren't evolved all the way, because of dumb reasons)

They come in Fast and Charged varieties.

They'll be a bit hard to come by to start out.

I'd avoid second moving things.

It's an expensive thing that you don't really need to use as a starting player.

It's generally more for the PVP side of things.

Shadow bonus gives a 20% attack bonus, 16.6% defence cut.

They have a fairly active Q&A pinned each week, and it's good to just read other people's questions for things you might not even have thought to ask.

Yeah, you can get them from two wins in a set in the big PVP mode; Go Battle League, battling friends, or from Research Breakthroughs.

I'd probably recommend the latter.

It may take you a little while to get one, (1 in 4 chance) but it's deffo the easiest way for you rn.

Legendary Rate (1 in 20ish): The standard rate for legendaries, unless it's using the above.

Community Day Rate (1 in 24ish): The standard rate used on community days. Despite recent arguments on the matter, as far as I know, there's not satisfactory evidence to suggest that this has been decreased to make Comm Day shinies rarer.

Permaboost Rate (1 in 64ish): The standard rate used by Permaboost mons. This normally includes Raid-exclusive nonlegendaries, Alolan/Galarian formes, Baby mons and Shadow Shinies, alongside several "hard to find" mons like Feebas, Skarmory and Bronzor, although it should be noted that not all mons fitting the above description are Permaboosted. (For example, Rufflet and Alolan Rattata, which would elsewise fit the above, are both Base Rate shinies) This is also the "high" event boosted shiny rate, used for many mons on Go Fest 2021 Day 1, for example.

Mediumboost Rate (1 in 128ish): The standard rate used by Gible. It's also been highly debated whether Deino and pokemon featured in Mega Raids (Charizard, Pidgeot, Slowbro etc) are at this level or at Permaboost. This is also the "mid" event boosted shiny rate, used for Aron during Hoenn Week 2021, Meditite during Valentines 2021, and Kricketot during Fashion Week 2020.

Base Rate (1 in 512ish): The standard rate used by everything else. If it isn't in one of the above, it's name isn't Meltan, Smeargle or Unown (Which get reshinylocked after the events featuring them end), and it can be encountered shiny, it's here.

It's also worth saying that it is heavily believed that shiny rates are consistent over encounter types. So if a mon is at base rate, no matter where it is encountered; eggs, raids, research, the wild etc, it will always be at that rate.
