My friend tells me to fight the team rocket grunts but I almost always lose as most of my Pokémon are in the 400-700 CP range while the grunt has 1000-1500 CP. How do I catch stronger Pokémon and legendaries?

There really is no objective aside catching mons by catching pokemon, you can gain stardust and candy for that specific mon you just caught which are the most important resources since that's what you use to power up and evolve your pokemon. You can also earn candies by walking with the mon you want candies for

Also raids are fun to do and are how you get legendaries and mega pokemon but I'd wait till you're much stronger to take on those ^^' you'd need about 5-6 people for a legendary

The game is location based. Getting items, picking up eggs, and attending/hosting raids all require being places. You can join raids remotely, but that requires permium items. Adventure sync in the game can pull from the phone's pedometer to hatch eggs. Everything else pretty much requires going out to places (parks are good, malls can be).

Gameplay wise? It’s mainly if one team has basically taken over your area and won’t let anyone have a hold on the gym or that just about everyone in town IS on the same team, so gyms can’t turn over and nobody can get coins. Mystic/blue have the most players, followed by Valor/red, and then Instinct/yellow. All in all though, you pick whichever team appeals to you—whether that’s because you vibe with a leader, the title, your favorite color, your friend is on a certain team etc. you should be all set.
