I think that second part is where I falter

When I see a pokemon performing well I just think of the stats and moves and ability it's using and not the circumstances that lead to its popularity or who it's partnered with too much

That's normal when you are just starting, pokemon is a game with a lot of flexibility so perfectly a new tech or something can pop off and not everybody will know why is it good

I think I'm less a beginner and more just not dedicated enough to it because I keep falling out of pvp for like half a year at a time

So yeah the best advive I could give you to comprehend the second question is asking people more experienced in the format

Was probably sort of bulky and you just didn't account for doubles reducing the damage of spread moves. Some damage calculators force you to enable the feature. 🤷
