a few things you should know before diving in:

1. Competitive pokemon (aka ranked battles) use a ruleset that bans/allows certain pokemon. Right now (and until May), we are using a ruleset called Regulation G. This ruleset allows for every team to have one restricted legendary pokemon. These are usually the box legendary pokemon, stuff like Kyogre/Groudon/Miraidon/etc. You will want one of these pokemon if you want to stand a chance in battle, so have you shiny hunted any of these?

2. Single battles vs. double battles is purely player preference. Pretty much everyone here plays double battles, so if you want help from this chat then you would probably want to play double battles. These tend to be faster, a little more thought intensive, but also can be overwhelming and stressful since there is more weight on individual decisions. Single battles are slower, less intimidating, but ultimately less engaging to many players. Also this is probably way down the line, but if you ever want to play in person tournaments then you need to play double battles since official singles tournaments do not exist.

3. If you're playing in scarlet/violet and not with an online battle simulator, then you will either play VGC (double battles) or BSS (single battles). Looking up these terms on youtube/the internet will give you more results in case you want to do your own research
