Talking about teambuilding concepts
It requires a mixture of knowing how certain matchups ACTUALLY interact and then figuring out what "holes" those matchups actually have, then knowing the niche of your intended Pokemon, and what they provide to the meta/matchup.
If we took Gouging Fire as an example, we know it is good at:
- Howl Support
- Being speedy due to Booster Spe, and with Breaking Swipe, can perform damage mitigation
- Secondary consequence of being a Howl support is to create your own pressure buildup offensively
What it hates:
- Doesn't like Urshifu-Water since it ignores Breaking Swipe, can potentially outspeed, and ignores Burning Bulwark
- Intimidate cycling, particularly Incin since PShot can ignore Burning Bulwark
- Immediate offensive pressure not there
SO how would you plug these "holes" since it's not exactly a 1:1 comparison of of "this Pokemon is good into that"

Running Sun + Clear Amulet = You can provide support/have an additional item, with the caveat you're now weather dependant. However this plugs Intim Cycling + Urshifu-damage even further, and can still continue to do it's role

Then you'd go into the actual coverage aspect in this scenario: Now you care about keeping Weather up + being able to perform the role you intend so you need something to control that, and potentially benefit off of GF's actual set.
You also need to see if your theories can consistently execute in front of the planned matchups, and then realise that even on bad teams you can have Eureka moments by seeing how good a piece can interact, and then create an alternative team. Basically ensuring the overall strength/weaknesses of the Pokemon with respect to the metagame

And more specifically relating to this concept at the time, Brute Bonnet was the niche pick since it benefits off of Howl Support, ignores Taunt from Pranksters since that's something Gouging Fire doesn't want to take, and can redirect it if you choose to by slotting Rage Powder, and then you get to hit Ogerpon Wellspring if they want to prevent Spores
