Usually parents will have the wherewithal to put that money in a bank, or use it for child expenses/some play money. A single child is an extreme annual cost for parents.

You also don't get the money as cash, it's sent to an account, and a child cannot be a primary account holder without a parent signed as well.

Like they can have an account in their name but a parent has to be on that account as well.

I'm planning on letting my daughter compete at Regionals because she's really into the idea of it. If she won any money we'd let her do a little shopping trip and put the rest into an account to generate some interest.
