#Spar with me
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Chaddeus Gigas Maximus, a champion in the gladiatorial arenas of the big city from decades ago, was sitting in the sparring arena's benches and doing routine maintenance on his armour and weapons.
The greying man was in no hurry as he whistled a tune while he worked.
@granite vine
((meant to ping @dim condor, mb Kerr))
The 7'5" Wemic makes his way into the arena, his large paws making crunching sounds in the snow. He mumbled something about it being far too cold to be exercising.
He gives a quizzical look as he spots the human, "What brings an old-timer such as yourself here? If you're looking to hire for missions, Rebus is over that way."
He gestures towards the guild hall.
The old man was merely in his fifties and was quite muscular, even before the effects of the belt that he wore. He was simply in a toga and tattoos of red strings emerged from the arm holes and tied him at the wrists.
"Hehe. I am not hiring anyone youngster. I am a member of the guild as much as you. Although I have been busy managing my estate back in the city." He chuckles as he keeps shining his adamantine suit of armour
Eddy maintains his confident demeanor as he analyzes the individual before him. A belt with the rune for fire, armour of the same material as his own. Definitely not lacking in magical gear.
"My apologies, I just don't see many humans your age in this line of work. You must have quite the experience."
He reaches down a large paw, "My name is Eddy Imbroglion."
"No need to apologize. I am Chaddeus Gigas Maximus." He smiled and shook Eddy's paw. He was large for a human 6'7".
"I only began this a few years ago. I used to train athletes for the gladiatorial arena before that after my own career ended."
"A pleasure to meet you," he replies, "Moving from one career of combat to the next? Seems like you have quite the focus in life."
"Been here nearly a year myself. Certainly quite an assortment of odd folks."
"Nice to meet you Eddy. Heh, well, I also took a break to write a book on philosophy from my homeland Snehta. Oh, you've been here for a year? Thats a bit shorter than the break I took from doing jobs."
"I hail from Acrelund myself," he replies, "Continent across the sea to the West, much better food out there. The fauna here is just so small by comparison."
"A year is quite a while to take a break from this line of work, sure you're still in fighting shape?" He teases with a grin.
"Still as strong as ever. Us athletes need to stay in shape in case fans meet you in the street." He chuckled "I bet I could still take a frost worm on my own."
"Could you now? I went one on one against quite the massive demonic spider in a platinum mission the other day while my allies dealt with the lesser spiders."
"For some reason, it falls to me to be the frontline in most missions I go on."
"It's simple really. Us tall ones are the 'biggest' distractions for the frail spell slingers." he let out a hearty laugh "A demonic spider you say? I can't say I fought any of those. I fought beasts, fey, dragons, men, aberrations."
"Plenty of dragons," he growls, "Fortunately, I've gotten my claws on an item that allows me to fly so they can't run away from me anymore."
"I have one of those flying backpacks. It's not the fastest, about as fast as I am on foot."
"Mine's a whistle, it doubles my already fast pace on land," he smiles, "Of course, I don't blame you for not being quite as quick, you were born with less legs than I. Still not sure how all you bipeds keep upright."
"Good balance and a firm stance." He says "Also, thats a very nifty magic item. I prefer my fighting on the ground however. Nothing fills the fighting spirit more than the blood soaked sands of the arena."
"Can't say I've much experience with arena combat outside jobs for the guild."
"My prior combat experience was mostly hunting with my pride."
"It's very fun. But some arenas fight to the death. Very barbaric in my opinion."
"Quite."
"I'm certainly not a fan of risking my life for the entertainment of others. Battle can be enjoyable at times but I do what I can to ensure I come out alive."
"That is what I always try to make sure happens for all my companions on jobs. I ripped out one of our friends here in the guild from that Frost Worm I mentioned."
"I've had to grab an ally out from the jaws of a dinosaur," he chuckles, "Some of the less durable folks do not keep their distance as they should."
"To make it worse. They were flying but the worm stunned them and when they fell it swallowed them whole."
"Quite inconvenient, those kinds of enemies are always troublesome.
He glances about the arena a moment, "So you're here to just clean up your gear? Or are you planning to get some training in?"
"I was planning to spectate some youngsters go at it while I clean it. But it seems no one is stepping up. Perhaps it's time to train instead. Would you help an old man up?" he raised his hand for Eddy to help him up
He raises a brow, suspicious of the request given the previous boasting.
"Of course, wouldn't want you to hurt yourself," he chuckles as he takes the hand and helps lift the human to his feet.
He uses the opportunity to squeeze the young man's hand as he raises to his feet with no issue. Letting out a chuckle.
"Let's see what the younger generation can do." He started putting on his adamantine armour
"Just don't complain about your back afterwards," he teases as he steps closer to the center of the arena to stretch.
His armour is already equipped, but there does not seem to be any weapons on his person.
"Any ground rules for the spar? I've got a spell or two but don't mind keeping those away and stick to whatever we have from our gear and bodies."
"Do your best. I will not hold back either." He chuckled as he stepped into the arena. He carried with him a twin bladed kopish(scimitar)
"Flame on." And with that, his sword lit aflame.
"Alrighty, let's get things started then."
He takes a breath that lingers in the winter air even longer than one might expect. Then, he raises a shield on his left, and a gloved claw on the right.

He is too slow to seize the initiative
Before the human can make an advance, that cloud of breath expands out and around the the cat until it completely envelopes him. And with a thunderous roar, a gigantic Wemic-shaped storm cloud pounces forth and delivers a slash that seems to target the spirit through the armour.
"A bit slow today-" he gets cut-off by the counter-attack, and momentarily backs off to assess the playing-field.
"Picked up a few tricks over the years I take it, good to keep in mind."
He circles around Giga Chad and strikes at the shoulder, chains of flame erupt from the point of contact and wrap around the target, but are quickly shrugged off as the third attack makes contact as well. Both sapping vitality from the opponent, the wounds from the counter attack mysteriously healing on their own.
"I figured by that belt you have the fire wouldn't contain you, but figured it'd be an interesting experiment. I see we both drain our opponents of vitality to heal our wounds. Should make this an interesting fight."

"I will try to step it up then!" The old man begins his assault, a 7 attack flourish that he had crafted over the decades of combat experience and luck. However Only the first strike finds purchase on the younster as the rest fall flat.

The rest ;-;
The Wemic takes the first blow but uses his speed and cloud-like form to evade the others.
"You strike quite fast, but it seems you've never fought a Wemic before."
He rears up on his hind legs, avoiding a horizontal slash and coming back down with a mighty flurry of slashes.
Once...
Twice...
Thrice...
Before the mighty human falls.
"That was a lot more intense than my previous spars here," he says as he catches his opponent with a now torso-sized paw to prevent him from falling as the arena's healing magic restores consciousness.
"You hit quite hard with that weapon of yours."

Is just laid down on his back after getting smacked unconscious
"You did great youngster."
The Wemic sits down a step or so away as he returns to his normal size.
"You aren't bad yourself, you've got a lot of power behind those swings. I take it you haven't faced many foes with my build?"
"Us in the gladiatorial pits are far more mundane in the ways we beat each other up." He chuckled "I did go against similarly sized opponents. I just managed to land my strikes better."
"I see," he sighs, "I'm more used to fighting monsters, so I've picked up some of their methods."
He adjusts his gloves.
"I've used a variety of weapons before, bows, crossbows, mauls, glaives... but it turned out the ones I was born with were what worked best all along."
"You are quite the built weapon." He pat Eddy on the back "I bet you can jump pretty far."
"As far as needed in most situations," he chuckles, "Though gathering the right magical equipment has been the biggest boon."
"I have gathered quite the collection myself. I am doubtful I will get to use some of them, but they might find a right wielder in our parties."
"I'll keep you in mind when I'm looking for people to bring into danger, I could use someone else up at the front to take some hits."
"Haha. Definitely better to bring more than one meat shield! Especially if they can lick their wounds and heal up from injury."
"Indeed, far too often I get recruited as the only one who can take a hit or two."
"Many like to bring a wide variety of people that like to throw things from the back. The only one you really need is a cleric or a druid."
"A wizard or sorcerer can be helpful from time to time when dealing with tasks that require less violence and more arcane specialities, but if violence is the answer a healer is really all you need," he nods, "Unless you have flying enemies, then you either need an archer or some means of flight yourself, but we've got that covered."
"I have once shot down a whole lot of flying beasties with a giant longbow. It was quite the hunting trip. They tried hitting us from the range with their quills but we had a banner against that."
"I've had to take out my bow quite a few times here as well, it is what I used back home for the most part."
"I've only done it once here if I remember right. Other times I brought the fight to the enemies!"
"Now that I have my whistle that is what I've been doing," he grins, "Far more satisfying."
"Glad to see the younger generations come to the same conclusions as the older ones. Some things never change and it's feeling the weight of your blow land on your opponent."
"Indeed, though, it is a pain when I need to bite things," he frowns, "As you might imagine, fiends do not taste very good."
"It is not something I imagined. Until now that is hehe." He pats Eddy on the back "Bite many devils?"
"Devils, demons, etc" he sighs, "Truly unpleasant, but sometimes I need to get an extra strike in after my claws have done their work."
"I appreciate you not biting me. I am not sure how an old man tastes. I will try to get some jobs this weekend. But seems I was not very lucky."
He gives a roar of a laugh and a heavy pat on Chad's back, "I was not eager to find out that either, I have enough people afraid I'm going to eat them or their livestock without biting guildmates. Even on my first mission here our client was afraid I would eat his cart mules."
"Good luck on the job hunting though, it is fierce competition."
"That it is. Not many jobs to go around and many people seeking them." He sighed and shook his head
"But a day will come when I am bound to get one of them."
"I'm sure you will."
"Gotta work hard to afford the items we need to keep up with all the strange mages around here."
"Hahaha. I have more money than I know what to do with. I have been saving it for if an ascendant or wakened dragon's wrath double bladed scimitar."
"If one appears in the auction house that is."
"I wish you luck with that," he chuckles, "A certain diminutive reptile made me pay a fortune for my gloves and whistle, been trying to recover my finances since."
"Hmmm... how much did it cost you?"
"Around 34 thousand for the former and 24 thousand for the latter," he sighs deeply, "Very nearly got them for cheaper but that Kobold tried to snipe me at the auction."
"Haha. I spent 50 thousand for my tattoo. The rest was cheap in comparison. Frankly I only remember that the big purchases. The belt was 27 thousand and the Amulet of Good was 10."
@dim condor
"A new belt will be my next major purchase. Mine only possessing the strength of Hill giants. But I'm aiming bigger."
"How much bigger are we talking? Fire giant? Cloud giant?" Then raises a brow with a smirk "Storm giant?"
"I'll take what I can get," he chuckles, "But I'll aim for the top if possible."
"What's your budget?"
The Wemic smirks, "I have ways of acquiring funds when I need them."
"Why do you ask?"
"Just wondering if I will be able to snag a higher tiered one than the one I have away from you if it pops up." He snickers
"As I expected," he elbows the human in the side, "But if you do so, I'll be there to buy up that fire one you've got on."
"Hehe. Precisely. You will get something at least."
The big cat yawns widely, "Well, I've put in my obligatory exercise. I think I ought to go eat something and take a nap. It was nice meeting you."
"It was nice meeting you too Eddy. Now I need to fix up my armour again. See you around."
