I played a game today to relax and who knew that minutes later I’m so worried and scared for my life so heres the rundown. Basically I was playing a game but I played horribly because I’m tired and that caused people to get mad and now I’m worried because online there is a thing called “booting” and what that means is that someone attacks your router or console to override and shuts it off and now it’s worrying me because in order to boot someone I need to get their ip ( depending on what they use ) and when they called me trash moments later my game console got disconnected from the internet TWICE and that cause a huge fear of worry in me and I’m not sure if it was a coincidence or if I really did get booted. To cut it short I’m basically just asking for reassurance and help because I’m worried

"booting" also known as a DoS on a small scale and DDoS on a larger scale floods your router with requests and overloads your router, for this to happen, they need to know your IP, assuming you were playing a modern game and you werent using an old platform to vc with people, your IP is encrypted (if the game is older and/or the platform you use for social is older then people can use something called wireshark or any similar network traffic logger to get your IP)

Now that the nerdy stuff is out of the way, I can assure you, if you were on a decently modern game (above 2010) and using a decently modern social platform, the only way anyone could've gotten your IP is if you clicked a link sent by them, so basically, unless you clicked a suspicious link sent by someone in the game at the time, there is virtually no chance you got "booted"

Side note: people are harmless in 2023, not a soul knows what a botnet is anymore and they all use random free tools called "network stressors" and nobody would boot you because you're bad at a game anyway, that'd be weird.

ways to prevent: don't click on links you don't know are safe, it's easy for people to get IPs like this ||see grabify.link (safe)|| don't use skype (because IP logging still works on it somehow... and really just use common sense... also if you think someone has your IP just reset your router, most modern ISPs give out dynamic IPs so it'll chnage when your router resets

as for "is my internet secure" i assume you mean is your IP currently public, that is another way someone couldve gotten it, if it was already posted to a website |||search doxbin for more info if interested, not gonna send the link here because most of the stuff on it is literally illegal (doxbin isnt the only site for this, just the most popular one to my knowledge)||
