The first time Kalego coughed up petals, it was shortly after waking up one morning. He had gotten up at his usual time, but felt a mild scratchiness to his throat. Clearing it only worsened the feeling, and in the end he had ended up giving a small cough into his fist.
Small petals had flown out from his mouth and fell onto the bed, saliva staining the sheets. He cringed and tossed out the mess, throwing the sheets in the washer before leaving for work. He disregarded this incident, and eventually forgot about it.
He was reminded of this incident when it happened again a second time, just shy of two weeks later. He was grading assignments after school within the teachers lounge, when a similar—but stronger—scratchy feeling from before grew in his throat. Just like before, attempting to clear his throat worsened the scratchiness.
But instead of just a singular cough like the first time, Kalego broke out into a mini coughing fit. At the final, most harsh cough, petals of a mix dark green and bright lime green flew out, but this time Kalego caught them before they fell onto his paperwork. He hadn't paid any attention to the color of the petals the first time.
"Are you okay, Sir Kalego?" Asked Ifrit, who was also finishing up assignments at his desk. Kalego crushed the petals in his grasp.
"Yes," He replied, tossing the petals into the bin under his desk, "It's nothing." He ignored the incident again.
This curse is one which is strengthened by the mind and emotions. As long as the bearer of the curse had proper control over both, and could erase their needless emotions, it would eventually disappear. Such a task was easy enough for a demon like Naberius Kalego—he had succeeded in this task numerous times before.
This was not the first time dark green petals spilled out from his mouth, but it was the first time that lime green ones did. Still, Kalego paid it no heed, knowing that it'd go away soon enough as long as he forgets about it, forgets about everything.
The third time it happened, it was not petals that Kalego coughed up, but flowers. He had gone to visit Shichiro during break, only to find that the menace named Robin was already there instead. The sight of Robin sitting on Shichiro's lap, mouth stuffed with a rice cracker, and the large hand of Shichiro playing with his hair, had given Kalego so much whiplash he had slammed the door on their faces the moment Robin called out to him in that obnoxiously loud voice of his. He ended up coughing up whole flowers a few hallways down shortly thereafter.
He denied the uncharacteristic worsening of the curse, and threw the flowers away in the nearest bin.
The fourth time it happened, he was with Shichiro. They were conversing during break with casual talk, discussing work and the latest of Misfits' antics, when Kalego broke out into yet another coughing fit. It had been some time since the last fit, so Kalego had rightfully assumed he had controlled the curse already like he had so many previous times. Rarely did he ever fail to do so for this long, how absurd.
Vines bring a small trash can over to him, allowing him to cough out the flowers that had only increased in both number and size since the last fit inside. Once the remainder of the flowers were finally out, Shichiro offered him his cup of tea.
"A new flower?" Shichiro questioned, examining the mix of flowers. This wasn't the first time Shichiro caught him fighting off the curse, but this was the first time he saw the new addition of lime green flowers. Kalego had never told him what the original dark green flowers meant to this day. Kalego clicked his tongue.
"Ignore it." He snapped, snatching the offered cup. Shichiro let out a sigh of surrender. He didn't press further on the topic, he had long since stopped doing so.

Since Balam has known him for so long and they're p much always hanging out, he's caught him coughing up flowers a few times throughout his years of knowing him. He used to try to get Kalego to confess before (without knowing it was for him), but then eventually gave up on convincing Kalego.
The flowers are the color of what reminds the curse bearer most of the target of their believed to be one-sided affection, which usually tends to be hair color, so Balam didn't connect the dark green flowers to him

Eventually, Shichiro decided on the former, and answered Kalego's question.
"Robin-sensei."
Kalego's body crackled with barely restrained lightning as he glowered at Shichiro.
"What are you insinuating, Shichiro?" He growled, but Shichiro was unaffected.
"You like him, don't you?"
"Like hell I do." Kalego snapped, Buzzer be damned. Buzzer didn't matter right now, he did not like the menace, so it wouldn't go off. Shichiro sighed, causing the crackling of his lightning to spike.
"Kalego-kun, I'm just worried about you. You've always had the curse on and off for so long, but since you seemed to usually get it under control eventually, I decided to stop saying anything about it. But since the curse is obviously more difficult to control with two targets, I think you should at least say something to the second—"
