Rumor going around that the FIA are looking to remove the Q2 tyre rule in 2022 to give all drivers a free choice on starting tyre for the race.

Well that takes all the strategy and entertainment out of qualifying... hopefully it’s just a rumour. It’s great to see the teams use different tyre strategies during Q2.

But at the same time as it is now it mostly benefits the strong teams (often only RB & Merc) since they are the ones who safely can get to Q3 on mediums and therefor also get a huge advantage in the race, making the gap even bigger. Even McLaren mostly has to use softs in Q2 to be sure to get to Q3.

McLaren made it through on mediums in Austria, a couple others did as well. It has also backfired. At least it’s entertaining.
For me, what’s the difference if ALL teams can choose their starting tyre? Then it will always be softs.

All I can think seeing that front wing (except FX) is if it comes off like they do at times so the car goes over it. Feels like that could send the car basically anywhere and not very safe.

Can't wait to see if the ground force aero concept allows for easier following of other cars - been wanting to see it in F1 for years since it was banned in the 70s - less regs meant the cornering speed was getting crazy. No more high/low rake concepts... who can manage the ride height the best(critical for the GE to work well)... which driver will be able to cope with the understeer a very stiff suspension will generate. It should be fascinating for the first couple of seasons!

The testing was more about the soft tyre compound not the setup. McLaren didn't use softs in FP1 neither did Alonso. So it seems there was some sought of testing for them on the softs. As well as Sainz went out on used softs in Q1. Teams can gather a lot of data on the tyres from just a few laps.
