By doing so, I think they allowed some different interpretations of what track limits were during the race. Hopefully that type of ambiguity will be dealt with prior to Imola.

Great race today; probably the most excitingly competitive in the entire turbo-hybrid era (i.e. since the start of 2014) - racing and position changes everywhere throughout the race. Unfortunately the ambiguity about the application of track limits threw some shade on it.

Two things for me firstly Lewis showed his skill by not damaging his car in quali like max and by doing the laps when they counted, undercut and last 5. Secondly it’s a team sport no matter how good a driver is, Lewis thought he should’ve stayed out long and max wanted to pit but the teams did what they did and it won Lewis the race

Bahrain has been my fav track for years. Always alot of overtakes and battles. Wish more tracks were like that, but feel almost every new track they add is followed by "it's hard to overtake here"...

I feel like it’s weird Cus it’s not that much different to many circuits but it does a lot more. I do think 3drs zones PLUS they only have 2 detection points is unfair

ESP Cus we did see a few swaps for position in consecutive or 2-3 lap period

I wanna see overtakes that stick not ones that stay until the next time they go on a pit straight

Anyway don’t wanna be negative at all this season should be amazing

My point is it feels like they are helping tracks that don’t need it

To make sure they exciting races stay that way rather than helping the boring ones

One thing I've missed last few seasons is higher tyre wear. Was more fun when they had to pit 2-3x every race, but since all the tyres exploded in Silverstone one year they changed so 1 stop became the norm with more durable tyres.

But were more stops yesterday as well which was nice!

For sure the tyres aren’t right atm they are better off being nursed than do an extra stop. If there was a safe way to have a high drop off in performance that didn’t risk the tyres blowing up that would help

Cus it gives them a reason to pit but without the risk of being in bad tyres too long

These tyres will work up until the explode

I think the tyres haven’t been sensible for years too many 1 stop tracks

Funny... F1 drivers tend to be judged or rated based on their most recent “big moment”... Perez has a great end to last season, is considered one of the best. Then today he makes a mistake (or 2 or 3) and now he’s Albon 2.0!

It’s the way the sport is... you’re only as good as your last race... make sure you do something great in every race, even if you make a big mistake!

I personally think the McLaren would had bested the Ferrari then and think Lando's podium was more deserved than Charles that race.

Then why do we rarely see drivers get lap times deleted cuz they went wide to gain an advantage VS last weekend when the drivers obviously struggled with the hard rules and it happened non-stop? That shows the rules were too harsh. Texted a friend in FP2 or 3 saying that of the top 6, 5 of them had got a faster time deleted. Then right after HAM made 6/7.

That's not normal and it was very boring to watch.

Probably because imola is a proper race track, it happened regularly in the first GP as well. They then removed track limits for the race and everyone complained that teams were gaining advantage, started issuing warnings and everyone complained that verstapen had to give a place back

Wasn't THAT bad in Bahrain. They even made changes from FRI to SAT in Imola and easened it after realising it was out of control. And still 14/20 drivers got times deleted in FP3 on SAT and only Kimi failed to set a faster time that was legal than illegal, meaning they didn't even gain an advantage for going "off" and went faster on legal laps anyway.

So then what's the point?

As I said right from the start: If that many drivers get laps deleted cuz of track limits, that's a sign the harsh ruling is the issue. No idea why some are defending it when they even agreed and changed them FRI to SAT, which sadly wasn't enough since the drivers kept struggling with it.

So I personally hope it gets more like before. It didn't use to be like this. But I understand if people who just watched the race don't see the issue cuz the race was awesome!

I see your point. And I was just as upset as anyone about Norris losing his P3 qualification. But they make the rules beforehand, and the same for everyone. Black and white. The enforcement of track limits there forces drivers to not take advantage, because at that spot the advantage is significant. It adds some interest and another aspect to the race.

Maybe for next time, they could extend the track limit there a bit... give a bit more track space there... but drivers will still go over the limit.

The FIA has been enforcing specific track limits at all races for awhile now, so this isn't anything new. It adds another dimension of challenge for the drivers to keep the car between the lines.

I did not find the race boring at all... it's interesting to watch the drivers try and keep it "in bounds" at that corner exit.

Just like almost any other sport... there's lines that dictate the field of play. Go out of the field of play and you're out.

There's also plenty of tracks in F1 where if the runoff areas were larger or paved, the drivers could go wide and go faster and gain an advantage. The drivers do it because they can.

it's all the problem of new "stupid" tracks that have concrete everywhere and don't force drivers to think twice on how risky they want to go.
on "old" tracks where there was grass or gravel right on the edge of corner makes it much simplier for everyone, you go too agresive and leave track, you done racing and you don't need ppl watching video of every single driver to check if they left the track or not.
i understand it's safety measure but watching races and qualifications on tracks like bahrain where you can do whatever you want and never get pushing for leaving track is just omega boring. maybe at the end it even make the whole sport way more dangerous because young drivers are not used to being cautios due to this. if they go too fast they just cross some lines and nothing happens. then they drive on tracks like baku or monako and crash the car on first lap and then cry those tracks are too dangerous.

So this is another reason why they enforce track limits - it's far less expensive to delete your lap time or give you a penalty for exceeding track limits than it is to rebuild the car after a crash with the barrier. Then like you said, tracks like Monaco are seen as dangerous... well of course it is... make a mistake there and you're kissing Armco.

i am watching f1 for over 20years and there were times when drivers like grosjean would never made it into any f1 team.... there wasn't incidents like driver cutting through multiple cars in 1st corner because he was going too fast... drivers were aware of coincidence it would have caused if they drive like that
i agree with safety measures like halo or wheels connected by wire so it's not flying around when contact happens but those new tracks are just idiotic.... someone designs track with some dificulty level and then nobody is forced to actualy "beat" the dificulty because they can drive wherever they want and you need bunch of ppl watching every single driver in every single lap and checking if they crossed the line somewhere

reverse could work if they gave results based on positions gained during race, not the one actually finished. so the players would like to compete for pole position so they have more divers ahead in the race to beat and to earn more points

but overtaking should be then much easier to be applicable.

So normal qualifying Friday for a mini race Saturday, then the full race Sunday. Seems like a lot of redundancy.
I wonder how the teams will appreciate the extra hard mileage on the cars
