That seems to have changed recently, and frankly I think it's right.
Being too lenient on Lap 1 incidents has had a noticeable issue, especially in regards to Max. He commonly dive bombs into Lap 1 Turn 1 with very little possibility of even making the corner and pushing a driver clean off the track. Allowing that has led to him abusing the leniency in order to drive more recklessly.

It's the same argument many people have for football - the "armchair referee". Managers and players (drivers) are expected to face the press and explain why they didn't do xyz in a game (race), yet officials don't have to justify decisions.

If it was as simple as a ref saying "I sent x off because I thought he did this" then it would go some way to explain the decision. Same with the race director - we did this because...

At least in F1 there is a former driver on the review "VAR" team so there is input from a driver's perspective which doesn't exist in football.

As much as I remember from this season, they are quite the pollar opposite of each other too. When Oscar had a bad weekend (given the capabilities of his car) Gasly did well (also based on his tractors)! Oscar was like good>best>mid throughout the season, while Gas was like mid>worst>best.
