In my mind the stewards should have given Norris his time penalty for exceeding track limits much sooner than they did. This may or may not have influenced both Max and Lando on how they carried out the rest of the race. Maybe Max would have given up the lead and just stay in DRS range of Lando to the finish line. Norris had good pace, but could he have pulled away a 5 second lead in the 10 laps that were left? I doubt it but we’ll never know.

Well this sport is kinda based on luck in a way. He got lucky that F1 driver from Ferrari got ill and he got chance to proof his capability for F1. He did brilliant and he is now the one with proof he can drive a F1 car. And he had pole in F2 in Jeddah also. And if you follow F2 the team he driver for there, they are equal to sauber in F1, so worst car on the grid

My personal opinion is that both of them were a little bit over the limit, so I'd just put it as a racing incident more than fair racing or a driver's fault in particular

In the first 2 attacks Lando just dived on the inside and on the outside from too much back which was quite dangerous, and at the same time Max moved a little bit under braking (which is quite common in turn 3 in Austria as we saw in the past)

In the final attack the incident happened, but it was completely avoidable by Lando as usually in those fights the inside driver gives much less space and Lando didn't use the space on his left

Again, not worried too much about whose fault it is as we finally had some decent wheel to wheel racing in quite some time

🤔 Though I somehow agree to what you mean, sadly by how currently they're allowed to race, I think it was Lando there that either didn't expect Max's move, or just kept his position to force Verstappen to go tighter (worse line) to hinder his exit speed, or even it was Max that seemed to went wide (& made contact) due to a slide, in a footage I saw from a crowd that recorded them from the front.

I agree with Peter Windsor (and others) that the one who's in front owns the racing line to choose & decide how to take each corner, and even try to block/affect somehow the following cars by controlling the car's speed & positioning regards racing lines & track position, since I see that as a natural part of motor racing.
But on the other hand, my preference is that one has to play safe (= clean) against the other racers, and never force anyone off or outside the track. Therefore, the one at the front should always avoid contact if there is already another car at a certain space, and regards the one at the back, when going for an inside move, both have to be able to make the corner without forcing the frontrunner to go outside the track, and obviously, without causing a crash. I think this was applicable to both motorcycling and car racing, but somehow, and because of numerous facts coming into account, all this has been lost, sadly (at least for me).

For example, I still remember 1998's 250cc Argentinian GP, where Capirossi was rightly penalised and lost that race against Harada, but already in 2005, at Jerez, the 'Star' Rossi was given an OK for literally putting his bike in the line of Gibernau, forcing him out of the track, by even going almost straight into his racing line, foot even out of the bike to help him keeping it up, just for going for that 'space' and 'take out' the front running racer, despite not being a straight crash, like the former of 1998 incident. Those issues were penalised before, but things changed from there on, in MotoGP.

If this is how racing is considered OK, in current standards, that Lando against Max was a simple racing incident. . || and even strictly not Max's fault...
