#Let's Build an Automaton!! [Machine Thinking]

Hey! Will from the YouTube channel Machine Thinking here!

For years I’ve dreamed of making an Automaton - essentially a mechanical robot - and after years of research and preparation the time is nearly right!

Last year I (along with our very own @lost geode) was very lucky to visit and get hands-on time with one of the most complex and interesting Automatons ever made. We got a close look at all of its mechanics and impressive engineering - especially impressive when you consider it is hundreds of years old!

In the coming months our desire is to launch an MMX-like project to recreate such an Automaton. But it won't just be us working on this project while you watch - we want to open this up to everyone to be a part of the design iteration process! Anyone with a 3D printer and some basic mechanical skills will be able to prototpye their own Automoton and share what they discover while attempting to help us reanimate this incredible mechanical wonder.

It will be a fun journey of discovery as we figure this whole thing out together - we’d love your help and will need a wide variety of skills to pull off such a big project: engineering, machining, 3D printing, CAD, electronics, programming, data/people management, and probably more!

Like with the CAD MMX team, we plan to have Maureen help organize any volunteers and open-source sharing, while I will focus on making videos, designing & machining parts, and directing the project.

We’re still working on some of the details and need to get a few things out of the way before we launch but in the meantime you can keep an eye on my YouTube channel or my website, and of course we'll post updates here too.

Looking forward to sharing something exciting in a couple of months, and let us know if you have any questions/comments in the meantime!

Will and Maureen

An automaton (; PL: automata or automatons) is a relatively self-operating machine, or control mechanism designed to automatically follow a sequence of operations, or respond to predetermined instructions. Some automata, such as bellstrikers in mechanical clocks, are designed to give the illusion to the casual observer that they are operating un...

what kind of automaton are you thinking of, which action will it do ?

Ooooooo wow yeah!!

I mean sure but an automaton can be literally anything, gotta define it a bit more

Paperclip making machine - we'll all be doomed...

this can only lead us to the paperclip universe 🖇️

All hail the 🖇️!

You kid, but actually I have thought about making a paperclip machine! Or maybe rather a series of small machines in which each step would do one operation of making a paperclip. After the automaton, we can do that one 😁

I do not have a copy, no

#

I do have a copy of Automata though

Might wanna give SMMK a visit, there's a few books there that you could find interesting, alongside all the mechanical thingies they've got all over the place ofc

I’ve found “Mechanical song bird tabateries” to be another great book on automaton mechanisms. That and the description of the Jaquet Droz digital writing automaton patent

#

I’ll check out SMMK

Not sure the books I’m thinking of from SMMK are accessible online, but whenever you come over to Rudesheim Will, you might be interested in that

@keen mural Yes, exactly that one

Ah, nice :D I did come across the pages that mentioned "your" automaton in there and was wondering whether we should scan them and send them your way - now I know that's not necessary 😁

that book has highly detailed drawings already. Andrew Baron (the guy who did the restoration) did a lot of consulting for it

some can be seen here

I came across Junod on his amazing La Fontaine aux Oiseaux

We've soft-launched the project, woo hoo!

not that i think i will find the time to participate, but looking at these automata once in a while is certainly worthwhile. I guess you know this but just to make sure - it seems maillardet‘ s automaton was a girl: https://youtu.be/zpJEP6O6-Ho?feature=shared&t=132

A two month long project that fulfills an 8 year long quest to know once and for all what the original writing instrument was for the famous Maillardet Automaton, which is housed at the Franklin Institute here in Philadelphia. The machine was created in the 1790's, almost certainly as a collaboration between the shops of Jaquet-Droz and Maillar...

so one question here could be if you also intend to reconstruct the dress

lost geode
#

We do indeed intend to clothe the automaton (one of the skills we're looking for is "sewing/costuming" on our intake survey)! But whether or not we'll be replicating that dress from 1933 hasn't even been something on our radar as of yet. By that time, the automaton had been around for 140 years already and I'm not sure whether we (or anyone?) knows how it was originally costumed.

At any rate, @molten roost knows more of the history and the costuming plans than me. :)

definitely!

hey @lilac sparrow, thanks for filling out our Intake Survey! I tried to add you to the Automaton Team over on Will's server but it looks like you haven't joined it yet?

#

or am I just missing you somehow?

Im actually having a bit of a hard time finding the link, which channel is it in?

In the announcement message is also the link to the server

Thank you! Im in!

You're welcome :) and welcome!

Thanks, Margareth! I probably should have included that link when I pinged Erazmus 😅

I assume Erazmus had seen the announcement post, as I assume they got the form link from there, so you assuming they'd seen the join link there as well wasn't very far-fetched, I'd say ;)
