You can typically find a server or Alliance in which you can play a necessary role to help your alliance or server.

It's not just planning

You could be mechanical master set up towers to help your team. Use potions and traps on the super strong to slow them down

But if you truly want to be a combat person. There are plenty of servers out there that stick to a very low CP cap. So that way their competition when they play SVS and Titan canyon is reasonably within their power range.

I think the best advice that I can give a player that is low spending or free to play. That they need to understand that they are on very limited resources. And that they have to make them count as much as possible. So for a very long time you should really only focus on one March. And build it as strong as you possibly can with your limited resources.

While universal heroes did help soften the blow of replacing stacks with other types. The main problem is that stat lines are just so huge now. That these bonuses don't really help players anymore. When whales had 300% damage increase back in the day. These buffs were huge to average players. Now the bonuses just don't make up the other list stats for being off unit type. Because everyone has 300%+ damage increase and decrease.

Even when we still had universal heroes. Encirclement had already had its fall from being useful. Striker, asuka, po, shinji, Duke, were all huge heroes not long ago. And nobody was using encirclement anymore. Because it wasn't worth the drop in stats from your other heroes not being able to use them.

And even then the best heroes were march specific. The game had been going that way for a long time. I do think they should look into things like encirclement and war beast and update them to be useful again.
