You will have new heroes released all the time, best to focus on the meta of the march type youre wanting to focus on and then update the heroes as and when

There will be a new Meta Hero every month, as posted by TopWar. With three Unit Lines (AF, Navy, Army) and three "typical" types of Heroes, then yes, while you will eventually find any Hero that you invest in will be obsolete.

The "most powerful" Accounts (often with the biggest bankrolls) will get the latest and greatest. The Accounts use all three Unit Lines and will often have backup Marches.

Investing moderately and well within your Means "in the beginning", on Heroes that are Meta or "Recent" Meta is reasonable, IMHO. These should never be considered "Forever Heroes", though.

Investing in the "Free Heroes" - those with shards that typically come from the Red and Green Tickets...not a great investment (unless for very targeted and niche purposes). You will rapidly find them underwhelming in terms of combat.
