To make it easier, if you have 50% starting shield, and you have 50% from hero, you will have 100% more HP, which is equivalent of 50% indestructible (but all the time, not tied to certain number of rounds).

It depends on your other stats. Usually, it's not better, but it might be, depending on how much HP buff you have, and how much DEF you have. It's not easy to say just like that. But, yeah, it can be, altough, as always, the more you have something, the less valuable that becomes.

For starting shield, you can only get a maximum of 40%, and that's when you reach T20. This is obviously for all your units and not talking about the HT only stat.

They wouldn't make it like that if it wasn't better than def.

Well, it's not just like that. Before, you couldn't get DEF, besides perk tree. Now, you can get DEF from many sources. So, before DEF was more rare (thus more valuable). It's possible that with time, HP buff in two forms (heroes HP buff and starting shield) become next DEF.
