I got mine when I was 12 and I loved mine

Spend some time with games like Slayer, Star Control 2, Space Hulk, Shock Wave, The Horde, Need For Speed, Immercenary, Captain Quazar, Crash N Burn, Total Eclipse, Doctor Hauzer, just to get started and you'll see what I mean.

Then dig into the import gems like Belzerion

Royal Pro Wrestling, Virtual Stadium Baseball, and plenty more

Oh and Icebreaker is a ton of fun too

I still remember purchasing the original Model 1 Sega CD back in Oct 1992. I had just joined the Air Force earlier that year and I essentially had no financial obligations at the time, so I was buying all kinds of neat toys left and right for the first time in my life. It was quite the change from spending months saving for the Sega Genesis and SNES and various games for them in high school/college. I enjoyed the hell out of that add-on, spending most of my time with it playing the original Lunar games. Then, almost exactly a year later, I see this new console that cost $700. Yeah, that was quite the sticker shock, but I couldn't resist. I just had to know what $700 worth of game console looked like. I had seen it showcased in EGM, and it looked promising... but all of a sudden, there it was right in front of me in Electronics Boutique. So, back to the dorm room it went with me. All of a sudden the Sega CD was a distant memory. I always felt a bit silly spending that much as an 'early adopter', especially after such drastic price reductions in the months that followed, but I never regretted the purchase. I had a lot of fun with that console. It may not seem like much to most now, but back then it was a different story, and it was very impressive compared to what came before it and what was available at the time. The PlayStation wasn't released in the US for almost another 2 whole years. That was a long time to enjoy everything the 3DO had to offer.

Proud and starved day one owner here as well! - I played WAY more T&E Golf than I care to admit. Need For Speed, Road Rash, SSFIIT, Return Fire, Gex, Madden, Slam N Jam, Guardian Wars, Dragons Lair, Space Ace, Escape From Monster Manor, Killing Time and a slew of others. Lots being bonkers and off the wall titles. Was able to go a good portion of them as my local EB Games had a good 7 day exchange policy. They actually asked me to try them out as 3DO was a hard sell for them in the first place. Fun times.... Needless to say, I'm excited to see this core in the future. Lots of these games were ported, but the 3DO definitely had it own game pacing.

Or can you ship a disc that technically can't do anything more than ping the servers for the update and bring down the actual "executable" game (if you can actually answer that kind of question)

case in point Silent Hill 2 remake where you can only play the first 15 minutes until the rest of the game literally downloads

shockingly film/tv is doing better than gaming as you aren't buying 4K Blu-Ray discs that just download the movie file to a HDD

You cannot ship a game that can’t do anything. As far as I know anyways. Those requirements become less rigid the bigger the publisher you are.

Or rather the bigger potential sales your game can have.

See Cyberpunk and Sony waving away all those show stopping bugs. My assumption is Sony allowed that with the expectation that a day 1 patch would fix it.

It's a real catch-22. On the one hand, games are so big these days that of course buying the disc would be better than buying tons of archival storage, but games are actively patched years afterwards making the disc just a proof of purchase.

Still benefit from being able to just put the disc into another console without an account (ps4-share.gif), but you still ultimately rely on their service.

No way your going to locally archiving the latest games for personal preservation (not counting Switch since it's basically a 360). Only option is wait till a game is "done" then download the GOG version, if you have the space and it's truly DRM free. And hope the GOG version is updated like the Steam version.

Well it's not always so simple. Nintendo insists on not selling their hardware at a loss. And at least in the past, they liked to keep their hardware pretty affordable (can't say that anymore though...). Most of their revisions were a result of costs coming down, and then making it possible to manufature improvements in the handhelds while keeping prices reasonable. Love it or hate it, but that's usually the reason. Things improve over time all the time in the handheld/mobile markets.

Ebay retro has going insane, things 10, 20, 30 times the price they were 5 years ago. "rare" is another word that get's on my nerves, what do you mean rare, it's a normal c64, I've got half a dozen of them. Notice how you never get a retro item with all the games, joysticks, addons etc anymore, or very rarely. All the good stuff has been harvested. 5-7 years ago, buy a Spectrum with a ton of games, now buy a Spectrum that comes with make a chip, no box, no leads, no manuals etc.

It was an ASCII-designed pad for more than just the 3DO and SNES. I only had the Capcom-branded 3DO version, specifically for Super Street Fighter II Turbo.
There was a version of the ASCII Pad Soldier for the Mega Drive/Genesis as well.

One of the oddest shaped controllers I've ever owned, but surprisingly comfortable.

I am surprised by this. It looks like it would be difficult to play with. I ended up getting the 3D Zero SNES adapter for Super Turbo.

It was actually really comfortable to use with your fingers for the action buttons... similar to the first HORI Fighting Commander I had for the PS3.

Another World was a fantastic game. My ST version, for some reason, was in French. (A mystery indeed) The 3DO version is different because the backgrounds were painted and scanned in. Still the best looking version in my book!

Yeah, I think both look great here. Flashback is the one where I am not sure what they were thinking when they updated it for 3DO.

I know the 3DO version is pretty controversial. Some people absolutely love the look of the game. And some people consider it sacrilege!

I once saw someone who compared the 3DO version to this classic.
