@idle yew, I know this excites you. Won't you celebrate with me?
Get your overlays here folks, they arent included in update all.
fuck yeah vectrex. I need to play it more now that I’ve got hdr enabled
Now available in tate, as it was intended
I’m sure I’m not the only one to have this idea by a long shot, but I wonder what it’d take to convert a crt to a vector display and have the vectrex core drive it. or grab like a surplus oscilloscope tube and use that
huh, whoever told me a raster display could be converted might have been bullshitting
maybe this is my excuse to buy a crt oscope
Im not an expert or anything, but it seems like the way the images are drawn on screen is way different in raster vs vector
ah found one person doing it at least https://hackaday.com/2014/09/18/building-a-vector-monitor-controller/ you rip out all the monitor’s electronics and drive the yolk with a custom board it looks like
OH MY GOSH
This is pretty interesting
I KNOW IT FINALLY TATES
I’m actually tempted to try it, cause I’ve always wanted at least one vector monitor, and old b&w sets are probably fairly cheap still
@idle yew I think we should get the overlays added to update all. How do we accomplish this? They are the OVR files in the zip, not the png files in the github folder.
Yeah please post some updates if you decide to try it, Id be interested in the process
hell yeah! I’ll keep an eye out for a good donor crt
Im not sure if MiSTer itself can send the kind of video signal the vector CRT would be expecting from the analog I/O board though, so that is a concern.
IIRC the vectrex original CRT wasnt 3:4 either.. Its like 8:9 or 9:8? I should check into this
hmmm I don’t know a lot about how vector data is transmitted to the monitor, but I wonder if SNAC into a custom control board on the monitor end would do it
I set it to vertical and it froze 😄 even the menu doesn't work anymore.
@tranquil bay do you think you could add in the Vectrex overlays to the update all script? They are contained within the zip file on the github page (the png files wont work):
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Vectrex_MiSTer/raw/master/overlays/overlays.zip
Seems to work fine now on my iPad Monitor. But it doesn't fill the screen vertically, as if it is assuming this is a 16:9 display, instead of 4:3.
Hmm, odd, I have one and I always thought it was 3:4
😄
I even made a holographic version of Mine Storm because my Looking Glass display is 3:4
The core does look a lot sharper than I remember it being
Definitely looks like it is expecting a 16:9 display though
Anyway, work on the Vectrex core is much appreciated
Does it need to be unzipped?
Thank you very much, I appreciate it
Could you please review? https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Distribution_MiSTer/tree/main/games/VECTREX/Overlays
This looks correct, these are the right type of files
Then run any updater and you'll get it
Oh lol you beat me to it
Thank you! This will help with people just finding out about the core
I was gonna submit a PR but I got all this work stuff
I made it so that it's easier to add a folder to be unzipped: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Distribution_MiSTer/commit/0027b2029177856ac1915c4980a609a2c684b38c#diff-896369601c81dd291ec0d3dc8d6dbcef94daecf061b241f47c69974a36f34323R204-R205
Wow that’s awesome!
@sacred bloom + @tranquil bay theypsilon you’re so great. It’s amazing to see how convenient y’all are making stuff for new Vectrex fans.
Much appreciated, the more accessible things can be for users the better
Sorg added the tate mode/vertical rotate to the core just today
Did you know Tate is short for rotate
It is not, but I will let you enjoy things
I made a build that outputs to an oscilloscope over the 6-bit RGB dac a little while ago, it works reasonably well. The scope uses XYZ mode.
ooh that’s exactly what I had in mind
with either an oscope or a converted CRT as a display
Oh
Well I mean
Maybe you should hit up sorg about that Robby
Since this pack came from the official github
For the MiSTer core, yes
Thats where the overlay files came from
Maybe you're right about the homebew overlays
I dont know
You are, after all, just a fatbaby. We can't count on you for rational decisions.
Oh okay just delete all your shit so I look weird
Jerk
LOL
I just realized it's not my problem and I don't care
not sticking my nose into anything
who cares
somebody probably cares
though I wouldn't know
I care about playing cool games and talking to cool people
then what are you doing here
go play the ultimate game, densha de go sanyo shinkansen
being happy that cool people want to make things better is cool
it's a Christmas present 😭
Imagine getting densha de no for xmas.
Jesus what a sad holiday. I wanted Contra Mom!
there's no greater gift than being able to drive a shinkansen
you're my new hero
Judge my game list:

Awesome!!
@modern bison would you mind sharing the adjustments you made on the vectrex core?
If I acquire a monitor that can handle xyz, what else would I need?
Right now I have a couple of components on a breadboard to smooth out the PWM on the dac and to boost the VGA 5v to 12v for the Z signal. Eventually I will probably make a pcb that will also have BNC connectors. The current breadboard setup using scope probes is a bit noisy.
Is that something you’d be willing to share at some point? I’ve always wanted an excuse to mess with a vector monitor but I don’t have the knowledge to reproduce your work. Also would it work with other XY XYZ monitors or would it need to be adjusted in some way to work for those versus XY mode on a scope?
Yeah, I will share the code/pcb once I am happy with the performance. I am not sure how adjustable other XY monitors are, but they probably could be accommodated for with an appropriate circuit.
Thanks!
I need to fix up some bugs first and I will.
I just converted the overlays to 240p too
Right now the video scan and beam are out of sync so there's flickering without persistence 3 or 4
our heroes!
I posted some more info here:
https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?t=7852
Thanks!
I’m going to be on the hunt for vector monitors now, hopefully something comes up.
I hope so too, it’s a legit cool system
This is only really guaranteed to work with my particular scope, XY monitors may have different requirements for attenuation on the z-channel. For example my scope needs 12v input but some XY monitors may need -1v to 1v, which my board can't supply. I can only really test things out on my tektronix 2225, so someone else may have to design a circuit for other monitors or scopes.
fuck yes that’s awesome
Has anyone been able to get a VGA to vector adapter to work with this XY kit: https://www.retrorgb.com/vector-monitor-xy-kit.html
Running the core on a PC CRT monitor, resolution 1440x1080 (double the original 720x540) @ 60Hz. Looks very good.
But makes me think: what if the core could include a buffered renderer with anti-aliasing? That could make it look more like real vectors.. of course only at higher resolutions. I understand it was aimed to be an accurate reproduction, but I guess we still can't connect it to a real XY CRT? So might as well make the best of it on a PC CRT with anti-aliasing?
Ruleset on here made an adapter and a build that can work with a model or two of oscilloscopes I believe. I think that’s it
Hi, does anybody have a video modeline for Vertex core to work in a CRT (15khz) ? I managed to use one from ao486 but the scaling doesnt look right. Thanks
I tried running the update.all version of vectrex core and it wouldnt even go to OSD menu .... running off a 240p, 480i pvm
let me make a video
nevermiond, seems like there is more to getting this setup on 15khz
