Upcoming MD+ hack

#

I really wish these patches would come out dual MD+ and MSU-MD, it's going to be like pulling teeth to get MD+ implemented on MiSTer because of political issues at this rate..

vivid wharf
#

This got me curious about how Streets of Rage sounds. I don't know if I like the MD+ hack. Some things are missing, like in the round clear screen.

#

Still, it would be pretty neat to have the option one day.

og soundtrack was definitely better imho..

How is the 32x core now days? Can you save on Knuckles Chaotix yet?

vivid wharf
# graceful edge unless, I am misinterpreting your statement?

I think you might have. What I am saying is that it sounds like the first few notes in the Round Clear screen in the MD+/SoRR version are either missing or are too faint.
I'm not sure what you mean by it possibly sounding too 'Genesis-like' to me because I am in fact comparing it to the original, or at least how the original game sounds in the second video.

dry spindle
#

Can’t admit to hearing, or rather not hearing, missing notes in the SoRR arrangement. The only major difference between the two is that the original stage theme keeps playing until the stage clear theme triggers. The MD+ version cuts off the stage theme so there’s a gap between it and the round clear theme. There probably should have been a fade applied so the stage theme kept going until round clear triggered, but it’s not a big deal, really.

New build for 32x dropped with load/save support!
#unstable-nightlies message

#

Anyone tried this yet? Looking forward to finally being able to save my lap times and the unlocked mirror mode in Virtua Racing Deluxe (JP)

#

USA version unfortunately was stripped of save feature which is insane with the game based solely on improving lap/race times. If anyone plays that, make sure its the JP original!

I thought mega drive and mega CD already supported saving

Ide on how to hook up my JUSTIFIER to the Sega CD core. Can’t find a 2 player Sega SNAC adapter? Is it possible to plug a USB controller as player 1 and SNAC (Justifer) as player 2. This is the set up on original hardware. Somebody with experience?

Besides that I rented a genesis from blockbuster for a weekend, with Sonic.. and didn't really think it was all that good. Also tried Sonic CD at a buddies place for a bit, which was a bit more intriguing because of the CD audio and effects in the game, but still really didn't do much for me.

My neighbor had a Sega Channel and I was always so jealous

shell compass

It was really neat! my friend on the east coast had it and that was my first "online" console experience of any kind. tried comix zone, sonic spinball and some x-men games for sure, but dont remember any others we played on there

Mega Man: The Wily Wars got relgated to the Sega Channel instead of a physical release in the US

shell compass
#

No I would have to delete other things to fit that on my SD card currently..

limber pine
#

Might as well put this here:

#

Has a more developed adaptive blending )Smart Blend) (though still in alpha):

  • In Sonic 1, the Smart Blending via "Enabled"-setting (instead of "Composite", or "Transparent"), has both the transparency effects for Shield-pickup and the waterfalls render properly together while keeping the sharp pixels. Dithering's looking pretty seamless too in Ecco The Dolphin

  • However, in Sonic 2 the blending seems to bit hit or miss - the palm trees blend correctly but the waterfall and bushes on Emerald Hill Zone doesn't seem to work. And in Sonic Spinball the dithering pattern for the toxic slime is pretty glitched.

#

Also FM Overdrive stuff but maybe someone else is more expert in that area

shell compass
#

That's my feelings about the current blend in general. What it does to text makes it pretty much unusable in any game that requires even minor reading

pale plover
#

Apparently a new stable build of the SEGA 32X core just dropped.

limber pine
#

Pretty much - was looking if the dev for this core was around but he seems to have vanished?

pale plover
#

Adaptive blend would probably be more consistent if it prioritized one sprite layer so the algorithm has less things to guess at a time.

Thing is the amount of dithering used depends on the context, as some games benefit more from the background layer blending more than the foreground layer, or vice-versa.

#

I don't know how the adaptive blending exactly works, so I could be wrong about something.

fallow dome
#

Or alternatively we can embrace the dithering elmorise

fallow dome

I want a good Genesis, anything else use an emulator

west sable
#

Zeldix loves it, MiSTer devs hate it because it was created by Terraonion. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth in the dev channel over a feature request and nothing came of it. So due to useless politics we cannot have a good format in the core.

fallow dome
#

glad they stuck to their guns, respectable

west sable

It has more features than MSU-MD, which is more closely tied to Sega CD's abilities. Ironically, MD+ is a lot closer to MSU-1 than MSU-MD is in terms of what it can do.

dry spindle
# fallow dome why doesn’t Zeldix use the other format then

MSU-MD should really only be used with X series Everdrives and a burned CD on real Sega CD hardware. It’s useless in any other situation as the Mega SD supports MD+, the Mega Everdrive Pro supports it, and so does Genesis Plus GX in Retroarch for emulation needs. MiSTer is the only holdout, so to speak.

#

MMV is excellent

wide iris
#

That’s true. V was awesome and someone else did 1 which turned out good too. That just leaves three more games

west sable
#

V is almost enough by itself for me

#

It has all the special bosses from the first 4 games

wide iris
#

For me it’s up there along with mega man 2 and 3 for neese

#

Oh and 7. Can’t forget 7 and 8 too

west sable
#

I kinda like 8

#

Rockman 8 Saturn anyway

wide iris
#

I love it. I dunno why some people doo doo fart on it. It looks nice, got nice music, love the wily stage 2 theme. I liked how the special weapons could also be used as tools. The lack of transformations like how you could do in 6 and 7 was a bum part but I could live with it. I do prefer collecting bolts as a currency like in 7 and the game boy game as opposed to how 8 made you get special bolts but I didn’t mind that much since not all the upgrades were worth me getting anyways, I barely used them so I never worried too much about going out of my way to collect every single bolt. I know it’s look comes from mega man and bass along with two bosses right ? But I don’t mind because for me this is a better designed game that puts it all to good use whereas mega man and bass I couldn’t even finish because I thought it was such a pain to even progress.

And Super Adventure Rockman

wide iris
#

You beat the whole game ? And you didn’t die a million times ?

west sable
#

I died some, I just learned the patterns like any older more difficult game

#

The game seems designed much more for Forte than Rockman, but it is what it is

wide iris
#

Yeah I had tried playing with mega man first and I think I got past 3 or 4 bosses, dying a ton along the way and I think the stage I called it quits was the one where those spinning soda can guys show up with eyes, those classic mm enemies but there’s a giant one who can ignite the area with fire instantly killing you

west sable
#

Burner Man

#

Thats a tough section

wide iris
#

Ya. So id get thrashed trying to learn the level layout and strategies, die a ton, make it to the boss with like 0 lives or 1. Try to learn their pattern as much as possible before dying 😂 I was miserable. Maybe I could give it another shot these days. I dunno though

west sable
#

It has some interesting boss mechanics, compared to other classic games. Burner Man cant just be hit with Ice Wall, you have to bring it out at the correct time, pushit towards him and shove him onto the spikes

wide iris
#

That’s cool when games do stuff like that. Makes it more engaging as opposed to spamming fire button.

#

Who’s your favorite mega man boss by looks and by design?

west sable
#

Thats tough to say

#

Are we including all series?

wide iris
#

From 1-8 and you can pick one from each game

#

For the first game my pick is elec man, he just looks cool

#

Fire man being a close contender but I have to go with elec man

west sable
#

no 9/10? Ima do it anyway

1: Elec Man
2: Quick Man
3: Gemini Man
4: Pharoah Man
5: Star Man
6: Knight Man
7: Slash Man
8: Tengu Man
9: Tornado Man
10: Solar Man

wide iris
#

Oh yeah we can include those too. I dunno why I didn’t think of that. I like those games too.

#

1.elec man
2. Air man
3. Needle man- he looks cool and okay to fight. I will say spark man has my favorite music of the robots there.

  1. Toad man with skull man and pharaoh man being close contenders because they look cool and I love their themes.
  2. Napalm man, with star man being close too. I dunno why but napalm man has a cool aesthetic going on, maybe it reminds me abit of launch octopus. I do enjoy Star mans stage more than napalms though.
  3. Centaur man
  4. Nightshade man
  5. Frost man
  6. Hornet man
  7. sheep man
west sable
#

You selected a lot of my second choices

#

The animal themed ones are amusing

wide iris
#

Yeah. Wood man probably looks the most funny to me. Or top man. Yellow devil I like as best fortress boss. I enjoy everyone of his fights

west sable

manic ridge
#

Seems like it? But that's not what I'm referring to, they show a lot of different types of gameplay that seem out of place with each other

#

Sonic games are notoriously not great with a few rare exceptions

#

Honestly I feel like the Sonic formula barely works as it is and anything that tries to change it tends to make it worse

At it's core it's kind of conflicting. You go fast but constantly hit obstacles that wreck you, and can explore, but slowly, so it's like there are two styles at constant odds. If you're good at memorizing you can make it through the parts that catch you, but I am not so it's like..... Go fast, stop, go fast, stop

And I don't feel like they've ever reconciled that. They've only tried to add mechanics and change it in unsatisfying ways

#

I despise lock on targeting for example yet they stick that shit in everything

#

Sonic 2 and S&K were the height IMO. Sonic 3 tried to stick too many gimmicks in every 5 minutes, presumably to make gameplay feel varied, but it just made it feel disjointed and shoehorned IMO. I honestly don't know what the magic equation is to "fix" Sonic

pale plover

I know that Mega Man The Wily Wars and Wonder Boy in Monster World don't save and require a hack to work right. I believe that's because of a missing mapper on the core?

#

I just happened to play a few hours of Monster World III without realising and got killed by it

#

Would be nice if it got implemented at some point as it’s a bit of a trap

old sierra
#

I thought it was just some sports games and that Naughty Dog RPG that needed eeprom saving added, those are pretty big games

Sorg did add in support for the obscure unlicensed gambling games and Chinese hacks into the Neo Geo core, so I reckon if he has set his sights on Mega Drive he will add all these things in eventually

fickle hemlock

i think it does? from reading sorg talking to the author

old sierra

So if this also becomes the Master System + SG-1000 + Game Gear core then there's a lot that would need to be added

And a lot that could be added to expand upon SG-1000.

Right now we have two ways to play SG-1000 games (MS core and Coleco core) and both have games that run on one but not the other

#

Is there a plan/possible for the genesis core to have a save state function?

hard silo
carmine pine
#

you can add it later it just makes it significantly harder

#

the game boy core and nes core weren't designed with it in mind, both had savestates added after the fact

versed rapids
#

@carmine pine the sound for Micro Machine 2 (Europe) is great now also

carmine pine
#

before i post graphs going to check with artemio, noise and psg seem to be significantly recessed comparitively by a bit, but nto totally sure. this also can vary by model so need his expert opinion 😉

#

looks like PSG is significantly different somewhat in terms of frequencies, which is kinda what i hear with the trail end of it, we'll see what artemio says

#

this kind of thing can happen when there are timing issues

#

the core was written as a netlist which can make it difficult for an fpga to deal with, gives the compiler a lot less flexibility

#

this can be optimized later anyways

#

just wouldn't be easy

#

transforming some logic that isn't needed to be sequential into combinatorial... combining some logic that is multiplicative or complex into using LUTs instead, etc... this can all make it a lot more efficient. but also defining things behaviorally isntead of structurally can help the compiler do much more optimization

compact plover
#

Been away for a while. Can someone update me on what’s going on? New Sega Genesis core that’s apparently more accurate? Correct? Will it play Sega CD, 32X, SMS or SG1000 games? What exact improvements are there with this new core? What regressions? Will this replace the existing Genesis core like how the 7800 replaced the 2600 core?

carmine pine
#

whether or not it's fully more accurate remains to be seen, but the bus arbiter certainly is more accurate so far

#

given it's based on decaps it likely is more accurate than fpgagen

#

nukeykt made the core with the russian team that does a lot of RE'ing decapping etc...

#

sorgelig began porting it a couple weeks ago and nukeykt adjusted some of the core given his feedback and testing

compact plover
#

Cool. Thanks for the feedback. Any ETA on when a build will be ready?

carmine pine
#

there is a build already on patreon 😉

#

sorg's patreon

tiny hemlock
#

The v1.1 release was supposed to be synchronous, shouldnt that have resolved any timing issues?

carmine pine
#

long chains of logic that are strictly defined can lead to timing issues regardless

#

everything being synchronous won't fix that alone potentially

#

that's why i mentioned LUTs as a potential solution for further optimization

#

let's say you have an ALU that takes one value and pipes it to another to be calculated, and another, etc... like 10 layers deep. If you can simplify this logic in code and make it so the compiler doesn't have to do 10 chains together of steps it will greatly ease the ability to meet timing requirements

tiny hemlock
#

Ah, makes sense

carmine pine
#

if there are only... 64 numeric outcomes let's say of this particular piece, then you can just use a LUT instead and take the inputs and map them to the table

#

and that is instantaneous

#

i think this code being done as a netlist is extremely valuable for preservation purposes

#

FPGA-based machine vision designs do this LUT optimization a lot to reduce latency and improve timing

tiny hemlock
#

How come this is more noticable with sound on this core?

carmine pine
#

i'm not sure if the reason the sound is noticeable has anythign to do with that

#

could be some minor bug in the code that went unnoticed, could be the timing, not sure

tiny hemlock
#

Kk

carmine pine
#

or could be an incorrect interpretation of the data i'm looking at

#

time will tell

Core Developer: You’re welcome!

#

Honestly I think that’s pretty cool, I love it when things are so accurate, even down to the faults. Amazing stuff.

carmine pine
#

power base converter doesn't work with a couple games, f16 falcon is one, and there are some games that wouldn't work at all without using the real sms controller on it, so SNAC through the core with sms probably won't work right for some games

#

the power base converter also only works with Mode 4 on the VDP, not modes 0, 1, 2, 3

#

so some weird hacks, the conversion homebrews/hacks/roms, and test roms won't work

#

and sg-1000 won't work
