Doshin The Giant fully done?

solar slate
#

I dont think so because this game is available on gamecube

worn delta
#

The plus side there is all the translation is already done

not finished unfortunately, only the menus i think. but there is the european gamecube version as stated above

F-Zero we expansion could be very cool

It's a shame the Animal Crossing English translation is bugged. Or was at least. I wonder is anyone still working on that patch. Guess not

weary beacon
#

there's still a large handful of japan-exclusive n64 titles that definitely deserve english patches

#

bangai-o and neon genesis evangelion come to mind

I think now that 3DO is in the horizon, the only 2 things missing on Mister of that generation are a 64DD and a VirtualBoy core

Regarding DD support for the N64 Core. If it is possible, it should be done. The library is very small and to begin with all is japanese only, that is true. However, in the last 10 years a lot was done. The whole Mario Artist series has been translated. FzeroX + Editor was translated, Dezaemon 3D is now translated which is big itself considering the mass of text. A translation for SimCity 64 was started at one point but so far there is not much. Having this game on Mister available could bring more people to the table and maybe a translation will popup too. Regarding the Aleck64 games, if it is really just about another CIC maybe this should be considered too. Several Aleck Games got a Translation by Zoinkity aswell. Some games are fun. I have them in any case on my ED X7

#

Also I have to say a big Thank you very much for that N64 core and for the Mister. Incredible little device and core!

worn delta
#

I think Aleck64 is as simple as adding the CIC chip into the core, and then someone doing what Zakk did for S-TV and making MRA files for the games. I have no idea how much space the CIC chip would take up etc. though

worn delta
hushed nova
#

I can boot aleck64 mame roms in the core by replacing the pif and setting the CIC type to 5101

solar slate
hushed nova
#

it would need more work though, they have dip switches/coin/service/etc

solar slate
#

to play it on the n64 these pathces should do it

#

these patches take care about controls and dipswitches

worn delta
#

Could support be added without even touching the core?

hushed nova
#

no, it has to be aware of dip switches (and how those are implemented on teh actual hardware investigated) along with service/coin/test

#

example: 11beat boots to a system test that I'm not even sure how to escape. probably set via dip switch or something

worn delta
#

Ah, got you

solar slate
#

I just checked, all the Aleck64 games work on the mister with the patches by Zoinkity. All controls are mapped to a N64 controller.

worn delta
#

Yeah the pre-patched versions work, but raw dumps do not

solar slate
#

no they do not. It would be nice to have real aleck functionaity on the mister but given that the games can be played very fine with the patches, maybe this is not that important. If I could choose I would rather go for DD stuff 🙂

#

One thing to add, the patches are all made by Zoinkity. This guy knows exactly what he is doing. You can always expect 99-100% working patches.

weary perch
#

Zoinkity is incredible. I really want to try the Japan Pro Golf Tour 64 DLC thing he developed but I haven't fully wrapped my head around it just yet 😄

#

Seems doable on SummerCart

solar slate
#

yeah that thing is crazy too

weary perch
#

wonder how much work those conversions were

solar slate
#

not sure but there is usually always at least a year between his patches

#

I worked in game localisation. The work he is doing alone is incredible

weary perch
#

just thinking about like... so he's extracting course data from the PSX Eikou no St. Andrews and then modifying stuff to replace objects with equivalents... seems like some herculean amount of effort for this random golf game, but it's also absolutely glorious

#

the work he did on Densha de Go! 64 is also miraculous

#

voice support is utterly bonkers

solar slate
#

yeah thats cool too

weary perch
#

just a real wizard, that one 🙂

#

was very happy when he released his Wave Race 64 Shindou Edition English patch

solar slate
#

there is?

weary perch
#

it's quite playable without it, we've been speedrunning on it for years beforehand, but his work always feels so polished

solar slate
#

damn

#

oh yeah btw, the rumble with the mister is very cool! I never tried that with any emulation and suddenly my pad started to rumble on the mister 😄

weary perch
#

the real rumble pack is just too heavy!! messes up the weight distribution on an OEM pad so badly

solar slate
#

it is heavy but when playing perfect dark inserting it feels like a magazine of ammo 😄

weary perch
#

reminds me that goldeneye was supposed to have reload mapped to "remove and re-insert rumble pak" lmao

#

i have a suspicion nintendo originally designed the rumble pak to sip power from the console so it didn't need batteries, but there wasn't enough juice for all 4 at once so they ended up going with batteries... but possibly not rebalancing it/re-designing it for better weight distribution as much as they should have

does the 80MHz N64 core work over component video? im getting a black screen

but the tremorpacks gimmick is that it has the motor built in and you can put the memory card in it and switch between the two with a switch

bright lotus

I'll consider it, thanks

topaz otter
#

in my experience it corrupts the memory card

#

and the rumble on low doesn't work

your mileage may vary, just buy the official one and put the memory card in the second controller

The Problem Original, official N64 controller paks store their save files on battery-backed SRAM chips. These volatile chips only store data when they are supplied power, which is supplied by the battery. But once the battery dies, so does your data stored on the chip it was powering. This means every controller pak, a

mellow raft

They've been around for a while as a popular fram mod. These seem to just have a fancier replacement shell I suppose.

mellow raft

The first eBay listing gives more details:

#

But yeah the first one is $25 for a yellowed shell, or $30 for a clean oem shell (both free shipping to US). $35 +$4 shipping for the Forever Pak. Eh. I guess pay what you want 😛

#

Still forever pak seems to be fully new PCB so... There is that.

#

I can't see anything going wrong with the fram modded paks though once they've been modded properly... No battery and I would expect they'd just continue working.

latent dagger
#

That fram is definitely an option if you want to save some money

#

I wonder if the seller would also sell just the chip without the shell for someone with an existing pak they want to upgrade for another $5 off

vapid hawk
#

yeah afaik only the forever paks are completely new design/pcb vs others who modify oem packs

#

and yeah if you want to source the chip somewhere it's not a terribly hard mod to do yourself

I am wondering what the MiSTer N64 Core is doing differently that the Nintendo Controller Checker Rom does not even recognize the Controller despite the fact that the controller is there and works. In this case a WiiMote with Controller but it is the same with any other controller. Since I do not own a NSO N64 Controller or any USB N64 controller clone, I have no idea how this is performing.

I just finished up Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon myself, although on real hardware and not the MiSTer. Really solid game, especially when you consider it came out a year before Ocarina of Time. It seems to run a little better on MiSTer, but I've not put extensive time in there.

I get that this is an old message and had been addressed a while back. but it reminds me of how little FPGA is understood, and how often people act like they know what they're talking about when they don't. I'm trying to imagine how it would even look like if a core were hybrid software emulation and FPGA on a De10 nano.

latent dagger
#

probably people assuming in their brains that there's some part of it that's FPGA and another part that's like normal CPU architecture, and some stuff is handled with FPGA while other stuff is software emulated not understanding that it doesn't really work like that

#

while it actually techincally does, it doesn't work like the way they assume it does

lament escarp

I don't understand it as well, but I learned to scream "no emulation" and just play the games. And to be fair, I've had issues with every software emulator I tried. Not with the core. Just works and works perfectly.

#

there will alwyas be some person splitting hairs... if I'm not mistaken the n64 core has some hardware emulation parts (i.e. not a chip-by-chip replica of the hardware) and some people will take that to mean "its emulation"

#

and then some other people will come up and say it's all emulation unless you run the exact console that came out of Nintendo's ovens in the 90s

it just never ends...🤣

its emulation all the way down 😅

the main issue is the term itself being vague

lament escarp

My mini snes was one of the worst things to play snes games on until it exploded. 😅

pale granite
#

I tried a fake chinese version of that (advertised as identical to the real one) and it was even worse

#

Ive been spoiled by FPGA cores though. The PCE mini is well done, and has a really nice menu, but the games feel wrong compared to the hardware replicas

latent dagger
#

from my understanding the majority of systems in China that play NES or even SNES games are single SoC style which is why they work but not perfectly and have some issues with compatibility

lament escarp

I think the main advantage of mister is it being open source, so a lot of people chime in to keep accuracy high. And someone will always call out even small discrepancies.

Or sixtyfour.

zinc dew
#

And that’s a perfectly viable perspective, honestly. Can’t fault ‘em for not wanting to spend money on hardware to emulate when they already have the hardware the emulate.

#

Just depends on a person’s priorities and passion for the hobby.

#

Some people aren’t that super passionate about it, casually enjoy it, and think buying specialty hardware to play super Mario bros is very silly. From their perspective they’re correct because they don’t share the same priorities and passion as I do.

#

Some people are just as passionate as I am and also think buying specialty hardware is silly. But they don’t prioritize the convenience and performance that MiSTer offers that I do and that’s fine too.

#

But I do think it’s a problem when they or us turn our own perspectives into a blanket truth and look down on others for not sharing our same values.

lament escarp
#

That still doesn't make the n64 core a hybrid between software and hardware emulation. Which is how this whole discussion started.

zinc dew
#

“Oh that thing other people like that I don’t have and have FOMO about can’t be good because of X, Y, or Z.”

zinc dew

weary palm
#

I'm happy my programming "skills" have been of use for the MiSTer project. The first thing I did was to add custom fonts to Main. I converted a whole bunch of existing 8×8 ones into a unified format. Over 200 of them, if I remember correctly. 🤭 T'was fun. Had to write a bunch of custom tools.

(honestly having a goof here, but the more I look into analogue the more Apple-like they look - and not all for the best of reasons)

#

I've always thought the Pocket looked cool, but especially for a portable I couldn't justify needing to have carts for multiple systems/deal with jailbreaks when a good Retroid Pocket 4 plays more and off SD cards from the get, with the best d-pad I've ever touched... even if that means dealing with the at-times noticeable Android input lag. Gweh.

No comment on their consoles though. Mister Pi is definitely a better value (for the cost of setup and tinkering and MiSTer weirdness) but nowhere near as readily available unfortunately.

#

MPi really has changed the whole game on these consoles, hasn't it?

#

Like compared to that weird RetroN TurboGrafx console thingy I've seen lately, it's really quite baffling how someone could consider that when (assuming it's AVAILABLE) a Mister Pi is like, ten dollars more even for the bare board? And sure it doesn't come with a controller out-of-the-box, and if you want more than one controller at a time/more accurate timings you'd be better off paying the extra for the bundle. BUT EVEN THEN, the value proposition would be more than just the PC Engine...

zinc dew
#

I think the affordability of the clones has made MiSTer an option now for a lot of people.

#

So that’s definitely helped improve word of mouth recommendations.

zinc dew
latent dagger
#

also the analogue stuff supports your physical cartridges

zinc dew
#

I mean I completely agree with you, but this is still a very niche market that’s for the hardcore of the hardcore.

latent dagger
#

even if it's just dumping it to internal memory there's still that support for just physically taking the game and plugging it in

restive bloom
#

I would argue that Hyperkin puts themselves in a weird place, because it's clearly tailored towards people willing to use physical cartridges.
But then they have graphical anomalies, compatibility issues, and pretty noticeably bad audio lag.
Like I totally agree that they're supposed to be for casual use, but then how many casuals are willing to have a library of cartridges/cards? And those that do, wouldn't they notice the problems?

#

Now Analogue, again, couldn't speak - though it looks like most of their damn consoles aren't even for sale anymore? lol

#

Perhaps it really is worth it for purists.

zinc dew
#

The problem with Hyperkin, to your point, is that their lack of quality has started to become common knowledge.

latent dagger
#

hyperkin is clone hardware of original hardware I believe, which has it's issues, and is further done using a single SoC which further reduces compatibility and introduces issues, but is cheap asf to make in china.

#

that's for stuff like NES and SNES though

#

I don't konw of any N64 clone systems

restive bloom
#

Whatever SoC Hyperkin uses looks sub-Pi 3 at this point. That, or their software engineering is really lacking.

latent dagger
#

when I say SoC I'm not talking modern x86/x64 stuff.
I'm talking clone chips that are "mostly the same" as original chips, but then shrunk down and all smashed together into a single chip.

#

it's not software emulation when it comes to clone consoles like that

restive bloom
#

Maybe for NES or Genesnes, but usually a clone of any other console I kind of assume it's an ARM package running emulation.

#

But maybe the Mini consoles have conditioned me to that line of thinking 🤷‍♀️

latent dagger
#

only systems that are designed to run multiple console's games and use micro sd cards, those are just running emulators sure.
but stuff that is built to be like an NES with a cartridge slot on it and whatnot, those are clones.

#

99% of the time

#

like the RetroN system I believe uses clone hardware

#

yeah, just looked into, it's Nintendo and Sega on a chip

restive bloom
#

The RetroN 3 (and earlier) waaaaay back when was clone hardware, yeah.
But I know at least starting with the RetroN 5, and I'm 95% convinced with the GX I mentioned, those are emulation - they rely on ROM dumping and have some traits of bad software emu.

#

I haven't legit seen that many hardware clones lately tbh (that aren't themselves FPGA)...

latent dagger
#

I'll have to look at the Retron5 real quick. don't see it on their website

restive bloom
#

Retron 5 was like almost a decade ago tbf

#

That was the last I'd heard.

#

was literally an Android box with a frontend and a cart rom dumper

latent dagger
#

yeah, the 5 looks like it might be emulation with it having options for filters and scaling and stuff

restive bloom
#

Though I try to keep my pulse on physical retro gaming stuff, I won't lie that I'm not the most keenly aware of clone hardware solution that aren't just gussied up emulation solutions; Evercades and the like are the most I'm aware of that are relatively big in the space - I'm mostly into foss emulators and PC arcade stuff as of late. (Working on lightguns does that kinda thing lmao)

latent dagger
#

Analogue exists as a medium for those who want a modern solution that supports them using their physical cartridges (for nostalgia/aesthetic reasons) allowing them to avoid old hardware and maintaining/fixing it etc.

otherwise just collect games if you want to and put them on the shelf but use a mister lol.

restive bloom
#

I just don't personally see the value proposition

#

But I also knowingly sold my NeoGeo AES that I was once in possession of

#

I've made that personal decision to mostly stick with emulation - or at least with MiSTer, solutions that lets me use my digital rom bucket I hoard library.

latent dagger
#

for me it's about the best overall solution for playing games that gives me options of convenience, QoL features, and can be used with my CRTs.

MiSTer is just that for 5th gen and older, handheld and arcade cabs.

for newer though I have individual consoles that are modded to load backups off of internal storage lol.

restive bloom
#

For use with CRTs I totally get, but even I'll admit that's a painful minority

because fuck carrying those things. Survival of the fittest shoving a bigger tube up several flights of stairs.

#

Like I HAVE one. Am I proud? Absolutely, but I dread having to move again

ok, there's an app for people to offer their temporary services of being handymen or just muscle kind of like fiverr but for helping you do shit.
I'll have to look it up real quick but you can pay someone a reasonably affordable amount of money to help you with stuff like that whenever it happens

#

it's called Taskrabbit

restive bloom
#

Oh, that's a thing?
Huh
I appreciate the thought, though I don't know if I'll consider it aha.

latent dagger
#

if you ever need help with a project, handyman work, etc. you can probably find someone on there for it

#

heck, even if you are just like "I want to rearrange my entire apartment" you can get someone to help with that lol.

#

I'm gonna definitely be using it to get help when I manage to move out probably this or next year (depends on what happens in the next 6 months) cuz I have some heavy shit that I don't want to deal with on my own.

restive bloom
#

When I moved to PA a couple years back I was able to carry the majority of my (not furnishing) crap just fine on my own. It was just the two CRTs that gave me shit.
Well, mostly--a smaller Sylvania that I had intentions of modding (composite only) that one was fine; but then there's the huge Philips/Magnovox tube I use now.

#

Movers helped with the majority of larger cargo, but I thought it'd be funny to lug the tube up by myself

"how hard would it be?"

#

my back hated me for that, and my arms

I basically just rolled the thing up the stairs since it was still loosely "boxed" (wrapped in cardboard), and didn't help the stairwells are like barely three feet wide

Has anybody backported some of the decomp improvements from the Zelda games back to N64? I know I've seen it for Perfect Dark/Mario (maybe others)...

manic basin
#

@wanton sun I dunno if this is impacting any retail games, I would expect not, but it appears that the GameJam 2024 cart has shown there's an issue with field order on High Res (resolution_t passed as 640, 480, true) in libdragon. The fact the game works AT ALL is amazing considering it just folds emulators. But I thought I'd bring it up. Basically it's causing the misordered field issue on text. I think the actual high res renders are fine, but text gets put on the incorrect starting horizontal blank, it seems.

You can see the behavior in @cerulean elk's video https://youtu.be/hOrdUYmaCCs?t=547
Ares (disabled all correction and post processing I could find) renders text interlaced (so there are field artifacts), but does not render them off cadence.

I'm trying to find an N64 homebrew ROM that reads Gameboy games from the transfer Pak and dumps the ROM and SRAM

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a hack of Stadium that keeps the game untouched apart from allowing Pokémon hacks though

Yeah I can just use the gb core for that. I have a romhack that should work on mister but after it loads for a while it brings up an error code. But I didn't manage to boot any other romhack in gb tower either, so I guess it checking the checksum and not just the header.

Same kit works fine on Pokémon stadium as above

If SNAC is intended to work like a native Controller port on the N64core, the TP should work like on retail.

Yeah I guess the GB ripping homebrew ROM probably checks something first before loading the Transfer Pak, and if it's not on a flash cart it stalls. Can't think of any other reason

I have a little device to dump and write on gb cartridges from inside gadgets. It was like 30 bucks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENXn_sG3-9U

This is somebody running the Perfect Dark mod on the N64 Turbo core. Basically took out the resolution enhancement and spent the Expansion Pack RAM elsewhere for performance improvements.

There have been updates since on the github but I don't think anybody's compiled them back into a ROM or patch file.

waxen oyster
#

@grave jay And then there's HackerSM64 (https://github.com/HackerN64/HackerSM64). Rather than an out-of-the-box useable product, I think this is intended to be used by SM64 ROM hackers as a more refined base with enhancements from the Decomp already backported (and modularity as to which enhancements to include).

Both that and PDHP have incorporated aspects of the Decomp back to the N64 ROMs.

#

Regardless, I haven't found much else for other games yet (Zelda included). I'll keep an eye out.

#

Okay, this is so weird, I just got this notice while booting up the iQue/Chinese version of Paper Mario and I have no idea what this means, but when I boot up a clean blank file, it then boots me to like Mario having O stats, not sure if this means the rom is corrupted, idk why it would be, because I literally play this on my steam deck and it works completely fine

zinc dew
verbal urchin
#

That makes sense! This is actually a romhack as well so I’m not sure if that’s why this is happening

zinc dew
#

So the iQue Mario 64 likely not in that database. Don’t know if it’s even supported.

verbal urchin
#

None of the iQue games are?

But I keep getting that pop up, I think for the other iQue games, this doesn’t happen but I guess Paper Mario wasn’t put in the database yet

zinc dew
#

Or maybe you have a bad patch

#

Or the patch changes the hash so the database doesn’t recognize it

#

Lot of variables

verbal urchin
#

Could be that

#

Then that’s strange, because again, this works perfectly fine on RetroArch

zinc dew
#

Retroarch is a software emulator which has a lot of advantages working with games that have nonstandard patches or supporting games that don’t run on real hardware

#

or like you said, the database may not have the game’s hash info

#

If you don’t mind me asking, why play the iQue version instead of the other versions? Native language support?

verbal urchin
#

Oh just because lol

zinc dew
#

yeah I feel it

verbal urchin
#

Yeah I know I could play either the English or Japanese versions but why not the Chinese version lol

#

Even though there’s no legit differences

zinc dew
# verbal urchin Even though there’s no legit differences

There’s a big difference actually, which is why you need patches to have the games work on a base N64.

The iQue clocked the N64’s R4300i CPU to 140.625Mhz and uses a different ram chip that provides 3x the ram bandwidth of the original hardware. Lastly the only way to load games was through a specialized program on your PC.

This results in faster loading times and sometimes introduced new glitches because of the clock speed differences of the hardware.

verbal urchin
#

Oh lol I meant, like in-game

#

Like version differences, just a text language change

#

But I understand that though from a technical perspective

zinc dew
#

Ohhh ok. Yeah.

verbal urchin
#

Yep! lol but thank you for that info and breaking it down!! I’ll see what I can do in terms of adding the hash into the files, if not, I could just play this through my Everdrive, no big deal

That’s always the goal

#

For homebrew is sometimes empty, garbage or an existing licensed id so we need hashes for those.

solar slate
#

Every Nintendo game since Famicom has its own ID (Gamecode) which also tells Company, Game and Region. NSME tells with "E" that it is the US English version. A "P" at the end would tell that it is PAL. When a developer is far enough in development with his game, he can ask Nintendo to issue a Gamecode for the project. Nintendo Lotcheck is also checking that the Gamecode is present. For Nintendo DS, Nintendo did send you a few encrypted files you had to put into your project folder. That also included the Gamecode. Then the Dev had to compile the game as retail version.

"for a N64 game" that implies the N64 was a weak console but that is far from the truth. The problem was always in front of the console. The system is just very complex and Nintendo was a big ass towards 3rd party devs back then. Also Nintendo itself had to master a steep, long learning curve on the N64, as they never had the visual most stunning games on the N64. Zelda64 did not become the "best Game ever" because of its GFX. In that regard they improved very much with Zelda MM. What you really can do with the N64 was shown by Rare but also only after a steep long learning curve and full support by Nintendo which means own microcodes and such. What the N64 could do today is very good shown by Kaze with his Mario 64 code overhaul. Stable 30 fps with GFX that looks not like typical N64 gfx. And yet the N64 still has mysteries as you can see sometimes on N64brew.

  1. Nintendo completely forgot that it existed
#
  1. A prototype of the N64 controller didn't have a dpad so they never used it and it was added to the controller late in development, too late to be used in the game
#
  1. When they were developing the game, they used the dpad for activating debug commands, meaning that they couldn't bind game buttons to it

Cos the analogue stick was “the new feature” then

None of the above. It's pretty brute force the way clothes and weapon models are switched out. The menu itself is a RAM overlay which overwrites a huge block regardless of what's there. And then the level stuff has to reload. Anyways the limitation is caused by too little RAM.

Honestly it's too easy to fall into the pit of imagining what could've been done with X game, twenty/thirty years later, with the benefit of hindsight, and no deadlines or whatever working environment the original devs or under.
So I just kind of don't. 🙂

#

My only exception is in sequels that somehow manages to fuck itself over with bad design choices that a previous game did perfectly fine and that's in part what I give Tales of Symphonia shit for but i digest, maybe they only ate blocks for lunch

#

In OoT's case, they almost certainly didn't think switching out armor pieces - or more bluntly, the iron boots - was that big of a deal, and the ergo's of the controller certainly didn't inspire much confidence that it could be used as hotkeys if that part of the controller wasn't exactly quick to reach in the first place. It's very out of the way when your left hand's on the center prong where the stick is, which is why most 3D games on the system just used the D-Pad and L Button for trivial shit.

#

(I often forgot L even toggled the minimap until Harkinian reminded me, lol)

tepid pond
#

Of all the innovations that developers have made throughout the decades, people act like utilizing the d-pad on the N64 controller would've been impossible to think of. Heck, Ape Escape 1 used the left analog stick for movement and the d-pad for camera control.

When's the last time you played those games? I guarantee you that I can use the d-pad on the original N64 controller faster than bringing up the inventory and mapping an item to a C-button, then exiting the inventory screen and pressing the C-button.

restive bloom
#

Like, a couple of weeks ago when I played Castlevania 64 with a modded N64 controller? It's literally right next to my desk setup I'm sitting in rn? When I hold the controller in the 'primary' stick-dominant position, I can't reach more than d-pad down, maybe d-pad right.
And even then, how common was it to use the d-pad in N64 games anyways? Clearly, not enough for most games to not ignore it for the most part.

#

Heck, I didn't even know C64 even had another method of camera control that wasn't just using the lock on until I was putzing about with custom controls in an emulator, and just happened to figure it was mapped to the d-pad. Because literally no one I've seen who ever played those games bothered to try the d-pad at all.

#

Like I said, it's easy to just assume the devs would know this as a problem worth the time to dedicate to fix with hindsight, which I don't think is a super productive way of going about it tbh?

tepid pond
#

So, switch the position of your hand between the middle prong and the left prong? I have the NSO N64 controller in my lap right now. It's unbelievable how hard you're trying to make it seem like an unreasonable criticism, lol.

And MM was purposefully designed to be quick to make. Even though it added the whole time management stuff, most of the rest of the game's base mechanics are all just taken from OOT since they didn't feel the need to rework the wheel that much in the year they had to make it (not accounting for time lost during Ura Zelda). So even though it probably sucks in the end, it makes sense that the same general criticisms about how the game plays carries over. shrug

Seen a bit of screen garbage pop up when going from 480i to 240p and 240p to 480i, nothing that I was able to repeat consistently. The latest unstable nightly seems much better, not putting large amounts of white static on the screen anymore in transitions or when the core boots so on the whole everything looks much cleaner than it did before. So I do a lot of testing of the N64 core. I am very happy about the core, also because there a things possible a real N64 can not do. One of the things I like are the VI Settings and the control over Dither and Texture Filter. Over the years I did VI Gameshark codes for almost every N64 game. These codes started out on the old Assembler Forum and last time I posted about was on the Everdrive forum. Now on the MiSTer with N64 Core these codes are useless. Now I know that the N64 core takes already most of the available space. Not sure if any more features are possible but I would like to suggest some additions to the Dither On/Off and Texture Filter On/Off options. Regarding the Dither on/off, this function works only partly. The N64 features 3 different Dither types. That is Bayer, Magic SQ and Noise. It seams that Bayer & Magic SQ can also be used in combination in a flicker like manner. The function in the Mister Core to switch Dither off only affects Bayer or Magic SQ or both. Noise is not affected. It can be found for example in Extreme G. Some Games use different Dither depending on the scene. Blast Corps for example uses Noise in level select. To see the direct Effect of the Filter there is a Testrom called NU0.z64. It was compiled by CrashOveride. Would it be possible to add to the core that also Noise could be switched off? Maybe add some sort of check boxes to select what kind of Dither filter method should be applied? Bayer, Magic SQ, Bayer + MagicSQ, Noise, Off.

#

In regards of the texture filter, right now we can only switch it off. We all know, the N64 Texture filter is 3 point filtering.
This creates a very unique look, some games like OoT even depend on it in some cases. But in some games the filter is producing quite some GFX distortions.
Since we can switch the texture filter off, I wonder if it would be possible to add a option to use another texture filter method like Bilinear filtering?
Another idea would be be able to adjust the strenght of the effect.

If you have trouble finding the correct test rom, please let me know. Not sure if I can just attach this here.

zinc dew
#

also holy shit I kicked my ass today, fml

not so easily. The trick with the filter is to have a very unique access pattern of the different TMEM banks, which can guarantee 3 adjacent texels, but not 4. It would require to double the TMEM.
That alone would be easy, but the additional logic and wiring will make a fit of the core much harder.
To conclude this: on future hardware it can be done in 1-2 days, With the de10-nano I would rather not do it.

@remote hatch sorry if you see that were pinged in GBA. I accidentally posted in that channel lol.
so I just did some testing on both cores, and for me personally with component out, N64 looks good.
Most likely due to the way N64 graphics and text are displayed, it adds a slight softness that helps hide any aliasing effects while not making the image too messy and text is still fairly clear and legible.

PSX however I feel is a bit too strong.
While most graphics seem to be fine enough, text becomes extremely hard to look at.

I think for PSX perhaps something closer to 75% of the current blur would allow for things to be softened on the edges still while keeping text more legible.

I actually compared both cores to the real consoles and provided feedback. On The N64 core kuba-j was able to dial in the composite blend to be absolutely identical to the real console, and I agree that it looks absolutely outstanding. I had both my Mister and console hooked up to my Sony BVM and was switching back between the inputs to be able to compare both against each other on the fly.

When I tested the PSX console I found out that it has even slightly more blur than the current PSX composite blend core, approximately by about 3-5% more blur. And yes, the text in Final Fantasy games and even Resident Evil games already is too blurry, however I don't have my original games anymore to compare them to the real console to check how they are behaving. I'll try to purchase them so that I can compare these further.

During my testing it also became clear that these composite blends are really essential, as they have noticeable positive effect, specifically in games with pre-rendered background images, where the blur polishes out the images and removes out the rough blockyness, making everything more polished looking.

but I wasn't necessarily comparing to original, and was more commenting on what it looks like to my eyes, and noticing that text is way too affected on PS1 (in FF games most definitely lol, I didn't even mention it but you called it since FF9 is what I used as a good benchmark for testing the effects)

I'm actually about to throw a copy of FF9 onto my Wii right now and use WiiSX with composite to test how that looks as a method of comparison myself.

jolly turret
# latent dagger if you have an actual PS1, and the ability to burn a CD, you can always try the ...

That's great to know. I just recently bought a modded PSOne without knowing it was modded, planning on getting the mod removed, so that there wouldn't be any chance of the mod interfering with my audio analysis of the system. When I compared this core I used an SCPH-7002 console, I'm not sure if the PSOne will look any different, but it might be worth a try! I just might not have any time to test it before the next weekend.

I fully agree about the text. I have don't know why it filters the text so aggressively, and it only happens with some games, specifically with FF and RE games and Driver 1. I also tried Ehrgeiz, Hard Edge and both Oddworld games which do not have any issues with the text at all, if I recall correctly (I should have taken notes).

#

Maybe someone more knowledgeable can take a look at it.

latent dagger
#

I played FF9 on a PSone back in the day on a terrible shitty Funai Emerson rebrand TV lol

#

I don't remember text looking this bad

#

when it comes to audio, yes, the PSone is going to be different because they changed the audio chip I think

jolly turret
#

I'll try it out, but what I meant is how the output of the PSX SCPH-7002 console compares to the output of the PSOne.

latent dagger
#

I don't think anything changed when it came to video output aside from the difference between the original's RCA outputs having slightly different output compared to the multi av port

#

but in regards to the multi av port, as far as I know output is identical across revisions

jolly turret
#

If we can dial in the composite blend to look identical, and have correct audio filter presets, the audio and video output will be fully identical to the real systems. It will not be possible to tell them apart. This is what I want to push forward.

jolly turret
# latent dagger but in regards to the multi av port, as far as I know output is identical across...

Apparently the RCA output has a noticeable LPF and outputs a signal with inverted audio phase, while the other systems seem to have a linear response mostly, expect some small dips here and there. Some later motherboard revisions however can also invert the phase of the audio through the Multi-AV output.

This is entirely based on information I was able to find online and through the MDFourier discord. I have yet to test my own collection of PS1 consoles.

latent dagger
#

using the Wii to play FF9 input into my 32" with composite it looks way cleaner on text.
and the natural softening that helps aliased edges looks smooth is still there

#

however, I also plugged the Wii into an old tube from 1987 and then it looked just as blurry as the blend core does

#

and that tube itself is just old and blurry. probably slightly out of focus too, not sure. haven't opened it up at all.

latent dagger
#

compared to the previous core, text is drastically better.
however, for me personally I get a very "sharp" looking image that shows with scanlines, whereas the Wii seems to output a more full image without noticeable scanlines and a way smoother overall image.

I am now investigating if this PSX emulator even outputs 240p or if it scales and outputs 480i only because then I'll need to yoink my PS2 out of it's whole over with my HDCRT and dig out the original composite cables for it lol

#

also in this process I am attempting to see if it's just that composite input on this set is just way better looking compared to component inputs due to how it processes the composite and combs it

#

ok, so WiiSX is not 240p. I'll need a newer fork version that supports that. Will change things out and report back

jolly turret

I'll try to find some time during the week to hook everything up for a comparison with the console and report back then.

I don't blame him one bit for making a video proving that he was correct, especially after so many people gave him shit and misrepresented what he said back then and twisted it around as though he said that backward compatibility wasn't going to be possible at all. Good for him.

It was obvious backwards compatibility was going to happen one way or another. Nintendo is pretty consistent with making sure their portable systems are compatible with the games from their predecessor. The only surprising part is that Nintendo is taking a different approach to handling backwards compatibility.

Honestly I'm so surprised they're being as transparent as they are about it.

#

Just flat out admitting that they practically only just started 'basic' compatibility testing and laying out press docs detailing games that don't even work yet, that's weird to see tbh.

#

But not unwelcomed.

#

And here I was thinking that 'compatible' Switch games was just an entirely cynical/corporate decision, but I'm glad that it's primarily a technical problem and I don't get why MVG's getting so much flack for just calmly explaining what the situation is like. shrug

As this is the N64 channel I must mention that he slandered the N64 core and claimed it doesn't play some weird ass homebrew, which it appearently does.

at the very least they have to recompile shaders or it'll be a stuttery mess

restive bloom

Pretty sure he's even brought up the MiSTer core many times since wrt the Analogue 64 thingy

restive bloom
#

...well, kinda--haven't had shader problems in a good long while with Wendies titles.
I do sort of imagine this to be not too dissimilar to some kind of compat layer solution.

So I'm hoping the shaders aren't as much an issue as with literal software emulation?

# restive bloom Since when? I watched his look at the N64 from like two years ago and it didn't ...

The Nintendo 64 has always been a difficult machine to emulate correctly. But in 2025 - we should be well and truly past all of it right? Not exactly. Issues with Plugins, performance, graphical glitches, stutters. Unless you have a very powerful machine, these are common things many of us will run into when emulating the Nintendo 64. But why? A...

Fighting and racing games don't see much benefit I think (and more isometric and 2D style games) but 3D adventure, 3D platform, and shooters work best with original controller layout

do we have some people here with some romhacking experience?
There are a series of patches available to turn N64 Cruis'n World more into the Arcade version
by restoring Arcade Music, Arcade Sky GFX some AC Car names and some of the AC car behavior.

While these AC patches are all optional there are two patches, that are more important also to the N64 retail game.
The two patches change and fix obstacles so they act like in the AC version and wont turn around your car all the time.

Unfortunately the two most interesting patches are broken.
There are two patches to add back the AC racing babes and their arcade costumes.
Maybe somebody here with hacking eperience can check the two patches and see what the issue is?
Maybe the ips files are broken or the patches are buggy to begin with.

The whole matter can be found here. https://gbatemp.net/threads/n64-cruisn-world-more-closer-to-the-arcade-version.447100/
Since we have no Cruisn AC Core, the N64 games are the closets we have to the arcade games.

I have compiled two version for me: one that applies all the AC patches and the two collision Patches to have a Arcade Style version and one that just applies the the two collision patches to the retail game for a collision fix version.

#

I will test them more on my MiSTer.

The n64 core, normal and turbo, just suddenly stopped booting. I was playing OoT earlier today for hours no issue. Just tried to boot it back up and I get a black screen when loading core. Can't pull up the MiSTer menu, just black. Any ideas?

#

Just downloaded (autoboot) from update_all and I can boot into that just fine?

Sounds like it could be a failing sd card, have you ruled that out?

Do you think something could be toggling the Video Out: from the Original(V1) to the 2nd option? I notice when I turn that on I get a black screen and can no longer see the mister menu anymore. Idk just a theory.

@wanton sun @chrome quest I'm testing the composite blend test core right now and noticed that enabling this feature will actually nudge the image very slightly to the right. I didn't compare it to the console, but it seems to take care of the image position being slightly shifted to the left. Could it be that enabling this feature is the fix for the shited image?

latent dagger
#

not sure if you can simply just copy/paste the existing line of text for the game and then only change the checksum on it in order to have lines for both unmoddified and moddified roms.

#

probably can though

solar slate
#

that said, the way of distribution of the patches is horrible!

latent dagger
#

You didn't say anything about original hardware in your post, and with the way you worded things it wasn't clearly implied either.

and ultimately I am having a hard time deciphering the entire point of your post so let's try this below to help get some clarification:

What exactly is the issue here:

  • That the game boots but doesn't properly load the patches?
  • That the game doesn't boot at all when you add those two patches specifically?
  • That the patches themselves aren't complete and you are asking if anyone with experience is willing to take a look at them to essentially update them?
solar slate
#

I asked for romhackers with experience to look at the broken hacks.

#

the first sentences 🙂

latent dagger
#

OK, so the game loads fin on MiSTer even with those two patches applied, just that the patches themselves don't work, or have issues.

solar slate
#

no that is not what I wrote

#

I wrote that the two patches wont work at all as flips is reporting them as broken

#

that was not the case with a older version flips btw

#

in older versions it was patched but resulted in a corrupted rom. But since ips patching was never ideal for N64 I was not sure what was to blame.

#

Pengwen, I just checked my original message. The info that the two patches in question are ondeed broken is not in my original message. I wrote that last night to the creator of that patches but forgot to add that here, sorry.

latent dagger
#

so to be clear, you try to apply the two patches and it gives you an error in your patcher saying it can't patch? @solar slate

#

or that they do apply, but don't work as intended?

solar slate
#

yes the latest version of flips reports them directly as broken. Must be a new feature

#

oh we can not have the links to the patches here it seems

according to the info of the starting girl patch, starting girl has original costume. you can always load up the patched and unpatched version to see any differences there.
and trophy girl is supposed to be alternating costumes, so you would have to win some trophies in the original to see what the girls look like there, then win some trophies in patched to see if they are different.

solar slate

thats the thing, there is no starting girl at all.
