#Nintendo 64

yes, it's a common issue that seems to happen in the scaler as i have seen it in different cores(e.g. psx) now. It happens randomly since some months (maybe framework update) with random core build. I also have a even better turbo core timing that also shows it
yes, the synthesis that builds the date was not run again, only the fitter for timing closure. So the build date was still the old
sorry for the confusion
i will instead release the old test build. No one complained about it, even though the timing is slightly worse
Can you fix the release dates in these cores without recompiling?
Nothing new to report on my side on the two test versions of the core.
Tested on a Dual RAM (DE10-Nano) and Single RAM (Mister Pi) builds.
No new bugs or issues found since yesterday on 50 selected games and played them 15-20 mins each.
If nothing else, at least your house was nice and toasty the other day 😅
Just curious: The new official name for the the N64_80MHz core will be N64_turbo now?
About the new vanilla build, I tested 13 games and everything is fine at my side too
no, cannot fix the date without new compile
and the name will not change, just a name for the test build
both releases should be available with updater now
Thank you! ❤️
Don’t matter, name it whatever you want. Will still require manual add.
Can someone point me in the direction of the updater robert mentioned above? Is this a new source to add?
For what it’s worth, a couple of us couldn’t repro it last night. How strange. I’ve also never seen that issue before so I don’t think it’s that common fortunately.
Should just be the normal update script
Run it
Update_all?
Yes, that’s the unofficial one but it uses the update script
N64 core got an update? fuck yeah
I never used any other. Which one is "official"?
i never realized there was an official updater that wasn't update_all cause every mister tutorial i looked up before actually buying one said to use update_all lmao
Update_All, it’s not part of the official distribution
Yeah, but you implied there is an official updater.
Yeah
Gotcha
Yeah
Update_all runs update.sh doesn’t it?
Yeah
Yeah
its theypsilon all the way down
Yeah
I wonder if update all be "unoffical" has to do with the bios and arcade stuff
Yes
Yep
Mmm hmm
Duh
hmmmmmmmm
i'll just use the thing that makes all my magic game files play the games that's easiest 🙂
Is it true? Mmm hmm! I do, I do, I do, I do-ooh!
Any interesting turbo core findings from people? Before I doom scroll
Feels like maybe some jank stuff like Turok 2 are getting an extra few frames here and there but I could also be imagining that. I’ve looked at those games dozens of times now since the core started development

Just that fun (but preexisting) rumble issue on Body Harvest so far for me.
My apologies to all our fallen friends who we'll miss dearly. Take solace that we won't forget your brave sacrifices to #1096015979055697940 and may our paths cross again in the future. 🫡

I survived the purge 😭
I just gun for people with no profile icons lol.
Wow, Robby really hates poor people who can't afford their own icon.
now we know your secret algorithm 🙂
ren Robby Robby_the_Assassin
Also for people who aren't aware, there is a limit of 1000 members for a post. Yes it's dumb and no we're not changing this to an official thread. I'm sorry its an inconvenience for y'all and if you got booted please let the mod team know so we can keep you in mind to avoid you the next time we need to do this.
LOL sorry
But anyone can make a post in #1046940348917760021. So if you see a MiSTer core you want to chat about with no post, please go ahead!
We won't forgive their brave sacrifices? 😄
"Darn right! That's completely unforgivable!"
one day I'll get it right
I wanted to be an Internet proofreader once... until I found out the hours suck and there are no vacations. 😏
That I have
Yeah, heres my selection process:
- have no profile icon
- have a non-pink name
- be offline
- be unfamiliar to me
have a white name
sounds kind of r*cist
lol
how many unique users does this chat get a day?
it must be in the thousands
and I'm sure it will be even more as the de-10 clones are out
Too many, burn it down
I know you’re joking but it’s still a good point, edited my comment
The whole thing is a problem we made ourselves but the value of having the community be able to make posts outweighs the nuisance of having to boot people when we hit the member limit.
Ultimately we want conversations on cores to be driven by the community. Not because it’s an “official” channel we make.
I’m pro banning any Logans, unless it’s Wolverine
And we didn’t want to play favorites with cores either so we weren’t going to make a channel for every core. So having it as a post made by the community is the best solution.
But yeah it’s still dumb lol
At least I can turn it into a funny spectacle I guess?
||That Logan gets banned at the end too, though||
Even the worst Logan isn't above redemption.
me too =p
The mighty Robby has deemed me worthy
It’s a bloodbath in here
bet you didnt kick any Texans @zinc dew
probably behind the drones in NJ too...I knew you were up to no good 🤣
Yeah he didnt…. 🇨🇱
someone had to remove a pin in in the cdi channel and had to find an outlet for his rage
damn I don't know why I had to be the victim
could be targeted and the other ones are an attempt to hide that
Best I can do is an E.T in a drone
🇨🇱
does not even deny it 🫤
@zinc dew rude, we literally chatted yesterday 😥😥
Inb4 @zinc dew purges Robert lol
I didn't get removed I just wanted an excuse for Robby to pay attention to me
You had me worried for a second lol
I had to triple check the logs
Oh man, I suvived another purge today! They can't can't keep getting away with this! (shakes fist vigorously at the sky)
I don’t talk much but I lurk in the background and read 😆
I am like a roach, or a twinkie -- not even a nuke can purge me
I know I am not familiar name but i've been lurking in here for years
Do you guys happen to know how to enable the N65 Turbo core in update_all? So far I have always got the vanilla core only 😄
Ahhh! I see, and I understand why
Thanks, Tim! Tim the Enchanter! 😄
Turbo core was meant to be a special core for unique side cases. For some reason people seem to like running the N64 that way even though its not accurate.
I also see why... some games seem to have better framerate with it
At the point you lose accuracy you may as well move to a SW emulator
So I completed an OoT Speedrun today using the MiSTer but upon looking back at the footage I can easily tell that the amount of console lag currently doesn't seem to be replicated correctly in the current core.
Was wondering if this is known? I had Fast ROM and Fast RAM access in debug menu switched to off but maybe there's something else to change settings wise to have the console lag be replicated accurately?
I can post the run's video as a comparison point if it helps.
The core is known to not b e 100 % accurate
some parts have to run faster to allow for the De10 Hw limitations
its not a core that should be used for speedruns , although its an incredible achievement
Ah, so it's not quite the same situation as some of the less powerful console cores like SNES then?
Just because its FPGA does not mean it magically becomes 100 % accurate
The N64 is above the capability of the DE10, Robert performed Magic getting as close as he did but only a more powerful FPGA will allow 100 % accuracy
believe the enchanter or analog press material 🤔
It would be nice if the speedruns site accept the Mister as a separated way to people compete, like they already do with Virtual Console and the others.
i wonder how large the performance differences between multiple DE10 setups are due to silicon lottery
Never believe anything until you have researched it yourself or you accept the biases of the reporter
though for speedrunning, you'd probably also need different lists depending on core release version
Then again people could also modify the core itself....
Ha! Finally a use case for the multi main feature, as it could be used to drm the cores.
Anybody know if the Analogue 3D will allow for 100% accuracy based off it being a higher spec than any current available MiSTer setup?
Yes but they all work for analogue
Just because the spec is different/higher is no indication the Analogue core will actually be more accurate. You will need to wait and see after it has dropped and people start running tests on it and finding bugs.
There's probably going to be firmware updates once people start finding all the edge cases.
If it’s that one guy with the fpga n64 blog he spent over 5 years on it. But yeah who knows if even then he nailed everything
Hopefully he does!
They’ve got the added challenge of also natively outputting to 4K. So I’m guessing whatever potential benefits a higher spec has would be eaten by that.
Honestly who care if he does, it has no value if it’s not open source
It has value! Just not for the community but as a consumer it’s still neat.
Analogue hasn’t opened any of their other stuff or shared findings so I doubt that will change
Yeah no value for hardware preservation
I mean
Unfortunately you’re right : (
Or advancing knowledge of the retro community
It's a commercial product. They are a business. They are under no obligation to, and they have no incentive to.
It is what it is.
Unfortunately you’re also right : (
Yeah of course just saying accuracy questions are moot
It doesn’t matter because no one else can check the work other than the obvious bugs on screen
It would be interesting to know how many bugs would remain in the current N64 core if Robert were to port it over to more capable hardware, where he could do the rest of the things that were on his “to-do” list. That would at least help to understand where there’s a knowledge/information gap that remains
That’s a somewhat academic point though. What we have at the moment is good enough for me 🙂
(“Good enough” sounds dismissive. What we have is awesome - and I’m super happy with it :D)
yeah, this core is ok I guess
I know Robert will never admit it because he's probably too German and humble but I swear this new core update is just "one game by christmas" meme status
This 'good enough' is still better than anything else currently available. 😉
Yep, and certainly better than my potato would run Ares, which is the only thing that comes close
I genuinely prefer this over original hardware that I have hooked up to my CRT right now.
doing a video for 4. I do love an unexpected N64 core vid these days
I wouldn’t hold your breath for something better than the core. Analogue isn’t really after accuracy, they are nostalgia chasers. And if it’s good enough for the majority of their customers’ nostalgia, then the work will stop there. That is what has happened in the past, and there is no reason to believe it’s changed
Flex more bro?
Damn what a braggart
I forgot to mention that I have over 200 N64 games.
“I also love playing the PSX core, despite my library of over 1000 PS1 games”
LOL
Guess the ladies don’t come running if they don’t know about the real N64 in your house
Man honestly, you two are right. I didn’t mean to sound like that.
You put the bullseye on your own back 😉
you must get so much ass at bars telling people that
I tell women "want to come back and see my Cobra"?
they are let down when its a broken arcade board
I think it’s cool that you’re single-handedly responsible for the price of retro games going through the roof
I asked someone if they wanted to see my MiSTer once and ended up with a restraining order :’(
"I love all the various Commodore cores, even though..." 😏
“I enjoy this core as much as my limited edition misprint pikachu N64 signed by Miyamoto where he writes Im the best Ninten-fan”
“No Robby, YOU’RE the best” -Miyamoto
“I only play games as Miyamoto intended - using dumped roms on open source FPGA console replications created by hobbyists” - Robby (probably)
Do you have a 3DO?
if anyone wants some good dick jokes the podcast Kitrinx and I were on is out and in share media haha
"MiSTer after Dark" style
Yes, two Panasonic FZ-1 consoles. One of them I purchased when it was first released... which was rather painful financially.
Ok real talk, I envy people who just have a MiSTer. They get all the games as accurate as possible without any of the clutter.
win/win
I am secretly storing photos of everyone’s collections on here as ammo for when my partner complains I have too much gaming stuff
Nice I still have my FZ-1, I traded my snes and mega drive back then to be able to afford it 😹
“Why do you need both a PS5 and an XSX?”
“But look at this photo of @mortal panther’s collection - they have at least 3 PS5s”
my wife has NEVER said I have too much stuff (I am lying. I hear it weekly lol)
“Why do you need another NAS?”
“Would you rather me have another NAS, or Robby’s 200 N64 games and 1000 PS1 games?”
To be fair, mine has never complained. She’s a gem
thats a pretty NASty comment!
my wife's last related comment was why do you need a server cluster?
thankfully she only knows about 1 nas
A whole new meaning to “shadow IT”
We're not very good at hiding our stuff though.
sorry, i'm not old enough 😦
Retro gate keeping
lol thats not up to me...but it is adult themed
An hour discussing Conker?
not your fault? that means you have gone so far that the platform restricted it? It gets more interesting with every word 🤣
hey Kitrinx said some dirty shit too!
Very unprofessional! 😄
if anyone would like to make any complaints or attempt to cancel me here is my bosses direct contact
@cerulean elk
lol what idiot would hire you
your mother by the hour 👍
so that's where my mother's day money is going.....
talking about astro bot's ability to lay pipe makes me uncomfortable
haha when I got the category I wanted to be silly with it
I said AXE
🤣
Is she your wife or your IT manager because if you say we need this you'll get the same answer from both
lol, she let me build it when i told her it was gonna use less power than my current one
tbf, a single 3 node proxmox cluster initially replaced around 15 different machines doing different task with just 3
then i upgraded to make it use under 165w total
The Analogue stuff is all developed by kevtris
so why didn't it have better games?
It’s not the ultra 64 thing with the blog and the YouTube videos
asking @tidal glade
We talked about this a couple days ago in the backlog. Basically the extra RAM is not really practically usable
that's not what i was told. i heard mister is better with dual ram
this doesn't make any sense
Huh? My comment was in regard to the “extra” 9th bit of RAM in the original N64
Mister 64 doesn’t even emulate this lol
snake is trolling you
Where did the pins go for turbo core?
@zinc dew ^^ https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/N64_MiSTer/blob/main/releases_turbo/N64_80MHz_20241214.rbf
80 whole megahertz. it's gonna make you mega hurt
don't skip hz day
So where’s this new core @cerulean elk !?
what does the fix video blanks option do in the n64 core? does enabling it add lag?
Disappeared
@wanton sun
How do you turn off rumble by default?
Every time I load the core I have to switch from RumblePak to N64Pad
Thank you! I now link directly to the repo in the pins.
Not sure you can because the core uses the n64_database file to know which settings to apply. Knowing whether it’s a cart save, controller pak, or rumble is part of that automation.
You could swap your controller to d-input mode if you don’t like rumble so it’ll never activate.
I know CRTs need it to for the core to produce a picture. Everytime I turn it off and reboot the MiSTer ir turns into a coloful mess.
It will not add lag.
It’s in the third pin from the top.
Such a fun surprise for a new N64 core. Gonna watch that Bacon vid later to catch up on the changes
Ah didn’t know that he confirmed that for the N64 product. Maybe it will have some bugs then. Better check those paper Mario lanterns
He is the dev for everything Analogue
The Ultra 64 guy disappeared from what I can tell
The Duo wasn't, and it was stated awhile back that he wasn't doing N64 either. He would be "technical director" but not the main core author. Unless I missed some announcement that in the end Kevtris did lead the Analogue N64 core.
Do you have a link for that?
I am sure someone can dig it up, it was stated by them many times in the past. He hasn't done a new core since his ones for The Pocket.
Did Kevtris engineer 3D’s N64 FPGA core?
Kevin "Kevtris” Horton is the Director of FPGA Development at Analogue. All FPGA development is done by Kevtris or directed by Kevtris using our proprietary FPGA engineering methodology and in-house developed software & hardware. Analogue’s FPGA team is dedicated to FPGA Development and Electrical Engineering. Each and every FPGA core is developed with Analogue's unparalleled standard and no FPGA core will ever be released without Kevtris’s seal of approval.
This is in their own FAQ
We make products to celebrate and explore the history of video games with the respect it deserves.
So in short, no he did not develop the N64 core, they paid others to do it and he oversaw/checked/advised. He is in a boss man role there now.
He got a toadie
I’m not sure if that’s the case or if they are trying to cover his ass legally
In case Nintendo gets lawsuit happy
If Analogue was worried about Nintendo, they wouldn't release the console in the first place.
So 8bitdo makes the hardware, and they just buy cores now, what does kevtris do other than not add support for the DAC? 😉
that is a full time job currently
Now, if they failed to show the same restraint as Robert and decided to help themselves to some Gigaleak goodies... that's a different story.
Taber will lay him off next year
Unfortunately, you're never certain where the code comes from with closed source. It wouldn't surprise me to find large sections of MiSTer code in there somewhere.
But I guess we'll never know...
Even when outsourcing development, you need at least one director level employee to review all assets and ensure it’s done to specifications.
Yeah, Kevtris is definitely not the main dev on the Analogue N64 core. I thought we knew who it was a year or so back, unless things changed.
I thought Kevtris hasn’t worked with Analogue in years?
No, he is still there, but in this more senior role. He is the main dev on the Pocket stuff.
Oh, interesting
I would expect he is heavily involved in the hardware design, the framework, and signing off all the code and making sure it is of a good standard and is working with his framework.
If you ever work in a dev team the more senior a developer becomes the less they actually code, somewhat ironically.
Until you eventually become CTO level of seniority and you don't do any coding at all.
I’m CEO of VGE and I have to do all the work. wtf
No, it's this toadie
Wait there's an update to N64? What did I miss
Secret DS support (maybe I’m joking, maybe I’m not)
There was a palette fix for Resident Evil 2
ohh
It got a five bit upgrade
Robert unlocked the fifth bit!!

anyone has tried this rom hack, in the turbo core, to see if it runs better than in real hardware like in the video?
where can i find the Update cores. Im on mobile app.🙄.
Best solution: don’t use the app, go to a PC browser 🤪
On mobile, click Nintendo 64, settings, then pinned messages
So obtuse 😅
haha yeah but im in the office 🫣😱 but thanx i'll grap the core later when im Home. Thanx anyway 👍🏻👍🏻
No worries 😉
But if you’re at work, still can’t update your core 😜
Just wanna know so IF im home i can start fast 🤣 Just a question of organize
Sitting at work, dreaming of MiSTer. I know the feeling.
Yeah just use the Update script and till download the latest core for you. The Turbo core is pinned and requires a manual install.
I have a weird issue that popped up a few weeks ago. Turbo core and standard. Newest update.
If I start the core with direct hdmi turned on in the settings, I get a colour or patterned screen. I can hear a game but can't see it until I turn direct hdmi off. It then works if I turn it back on.
If I then restart the core, it loads fine first off with direct hdmi turned on by default.
Any ideas?
Wait so who is the main dev?
To my understanding, he had not made much progress on his core in a while, though
Unless if analogue tapped him
I get the same thing when running the turbo core but I just reboot mister and reload the turbo core and it's fine. hopefully it's not as tedious as turning off direct hdmi, i've just been rolling with it since it's a small amount of time/buttons
although i mainly just use the turbo core so not sure if my standard would do the same
He's done with his core
yes, this issue has been in since the start. Best to not save clean HDMI mode. I should have reset it on core load but forgot
Funny thing is, it displays better on my system if it's enabled by default. As in, the game image scales to the full screen. If I turn direct hdmi mode off and back on again, direct hdmi now has a border around a smaller game image.
My laggy tester shows no difference between the two, and I'd rather have the first option! So I have to do this workaround. Which is fine
Is this a integer vs noninteger scaling thing?
@wanton sun is savestates 100% Impossible on de10nano on N64 Core?
You was in past writing about it and thought there might be a way
Possible but there isn't room so you'd have to lose another feature I believe
Not possible on de10nano
maybe paulb will decide to learn MIPS assembly!
Maybe a surprise feature at Christmas.....lol
one game playable by Christmas 🙂
Savestate loading is already possible, saving is not. Pauls way to do it would probably work. Doesn't even require assembly, a c/c++ program can be compiled for MIPS in modern tools
Maybe some day I give it a try, but currently I don't have time for such larger tasks
If anyone with c experience wants to do it, feel free to contact me
one small request - but could a button combo, button mapping, or keystroke to toggle between rumble and controller pak be possible? I know the OSD's Pad type determines the accessory which is a little different than a traditional memory card, but it would be useful.
No problem if not possible 😅
when i think of non-configurable(because mister framework doesn't support that) combo, i still think of digital<->analog on the psx core and I instantly don't want to have anything to do with that
Understood - rather a few extra button presses instead of a frustrating re-work
How do you know?
I never saw any videos of something running other than demos
Hmm.. but no pics or videos. Maybe because it’s going into Analogue
😂
now they can finally stop testing it. FINALLY. unless there's a .....
did i just stumble onto a new classic gif?
A gif that shouldnt be in the channel
behave with the gif herpes spreading outside of #general-banter
right. that should apply to everybody though.
it does, i didn't solo anyone out
oh shit, the cops
Hi all, I wanted to ask about N64 Turbo Core.
I have tried all 3 releases in here: https://github.com/.../N64_MiSTer/tree/main/releases_turbo
I have added the core to my Mister into the consoles folder, but every time I boot it my TV disconnects from my Mister/loses signal.
This doesn't happen to the normal N64 core or any other core.
Anybody have any ideas?
What kind of TV? A modern TV over HDMI? Try using vsync_adjust=0 in the MiSTer.ini
Sony Bravia LCD about 5 years old
Unfortunately mine is already set to that
Have you custom N64 settings in the INI?
Can you see the mister when this happens? does it reboot?
I haven't changed any settings I don't think. I haven't done anything on the computer for sure, just tried some settings on the Mister in the normal core
It doesn't look or sound like it reboots
so just the tv loses sync? can you post your mister.ini here?
yes just loses sync
How big are the core files?
Sometimes git can say you downloaded a file, but it's not the full thing.
220kb.. ah thats small! maybe i downloaded it wrongly
ahh yeah, that's a good call.
yeah, too small. are you using the download raw button?
I right clicked and saved as, guess thats wrong 🙂
yeah just found that, 1min let me boot and try
tbf, github is terrifying and confusing lol
nice catch @rich warren
I have used github for 10+ years and I still hate it
I use P4V for my day job, so git is so alien
We have a winner! thank you!
Last question, does turbo just automatically work on most/all games or do i need to patch them? Saw a thread from a while ago about patches but then someone said it was added to some list so they should just work now?
nah, everything is patched by MiSTer main now. no need to patch roms manually
sweet, it was just a wrongly downloaded core file, nice
Shame it doesn't automatically make every Snes game a fast rom. But I am very excited to try this and see the differences on OOT, goldeneye, lylat wars, etc. Can't seem to find any website that has any details about how much each game performs better, just the general 10-40% average
Well well well, if you feel like watching some youtube, @cerulean elk has some good vids on it
Will check them out, thanks
Oot is locked at 20 unless you patch it, then it can be 30fps on the turbo core
which breaks some stuff, so I wouldn't recommend it
the only patch for the turbo core that is auto applied is mario kart staying at 30fps, no matter which track
Banjo Tooie has a 60fps patch which genuinely is the best way to play the N64 version of the game (as long as you use the turbo core). Game also has a proper wide-screen setting.
The game is built with a dynamic framerate, so it can run up to 60fps without animations or gameplay being affected. I got 40-60fps throughout most of the game using this core.
where do i search that patch?
It's one of the options in this patcher:
https://github.com/Admentus64/Patcher64Plus-Tool
The actual patch for the USA ROM is here, if you want to use rompatcher.js or flips instead
https://github.com/Admentus64/Patcher64Plus-Tool/tree/master/Files/Games/Banjo-Tooie/Compressed
Wish I had this core and patch when I got the game in 2001, even back then the framerate was horrendous
I´m trying to download the latest builds both vanilla and Turbo, but getting the "404 the page cannot be found" message on Github. Never mind now it magically worked.
I thought patches are auto applied? There is a list of games that could be patched but it'd auto dome now? @green epoch thougut so?
https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?t=8078 list here shows lots of games and they say auto patched now?
Here's the list of games that get patched: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/N64_ROM_Database/blob/a06d6e9cdec2bff80af17157fa8e89ddb0315183/N64-database.txt#L853
; N64 game patches to increase N64 Core compatibility
Is that for N64 turbo speed or covering the normal core too? Trying to work out what games the turbo core helps thanks
@zealous knot I went down this road a long time ago, and the answer is that you're looking for more invasive patches, Patcher64Plus does some of them.
MiSTer auto-patching doesn't add any frame rate unlocking
Both N64 cores boot to a black screen. Cant bring up the OSD. I have manually transferred them to the MiSTer twice and same result. Should I delete configs or something?
@wanton sun are the builds broken on analogue to CRT? I get black screen and cannot see the OSD, but on HDMI I can see the OSD though the background is garbled
@zealous knot if you find the Goldeneye X patch for Perfect Dark, that's a fun one that benefits from the turbo core - it ports all of Goldeneye's content to the Perfect Dark engine, and often runs at a locked 30 fps on turbo core. (not the same as the unlocked PD patch that brings PD up to an avg of 40ish fps)
Goldeneye X's next version is imminent too. With even more, including co-op Goldeneye levels
they say that but I refuse to believe it this many zillions of months/years later...
I changed the Fixed VBlank settings to ON through through HDMI and saved and rebooted. Now I can see the OSD on the CRT. I wonder if something was changed, since I had not touched that setting and I used to not have an issue on the CRT. What does fixed vblanks do? I thought that was only a feature for some effects on HDMI?
The patches that main/the core applies automatically are strictly compatibility patches rather than performance enchantments (to overcome some of the limitations of the DE-10 nano). Many games benefit from the turbo core automatically, by virtue of it just being essentially a faster running/more performant N64 - you don’t need to do anything other than run the games. The Mario Kart 64 patch that Robert mentioned is only applied on the turbo core, and is similarly a compatibility-style patch, to make it so that all tracks run at 30fps when playing 3+ player multiplayer (otherwise they run at the wrong speed).
There are other “enhancement” patches, like others have mentioned, which unlock framerates and things like that - but you’ll need to manually patch the games (as suggested); and they may break things (as Robert mentioned) because the games weren’t designed to run that fast. You’d probably also want to use the turbo core to benefit from those unlocked framerates.
(NB: when I say that many games benefit “automatically” from the turbo core - this is just a reflection of the fact that a lot of popular N64 games didn’t hit their frame cap 100% of the time on original hardware)
Thanks for confirming. Yeah just tried goldeneye and on the first level it makes a big difference, was roughly 7-30fps (consistent depending on the area/camera angle) increased to 11-39fps on the first level in my couple of run throughs each on each core looking at the fps counter. Very happy 🙂
Going from 7 to 11fps in busy areas doesn't sound like a lot but it's ~50% increase!
Double digits are nice 😎
any sickos tried to diy a raphnet n64 adapter? https://wermi.neocities.org/posts/raphnet-diy/
I do not have such fine soldering skills so I purchased mine.
the names of these mario hacks. "arguably better edition 3" "arguably better edition WS 3". those sons of bitches
Two people in this world. Those with a N64 raphnet adapter and those without...
If you search the discord there were a few people. IIRC someone did also get 2 controllers out of the single adapter with the DIY solution too.
I think you can use a much smaller board than that image too
I'm a snac man when it comes to n64
Being able to use the transfer Pak and other stuff is great
I have the bio Tetris heart monitor somewhere and that works with SNAC lol
Are there any issues with OoT and the 30fps patch on the turbo core?
Or is that really an emulator only thing
It can potentially break the game since it runs faster. It will run, but use at your own risk.
But do we know of any places where itll break?
That I'm unsure of. Considering you can save at any time in OoT and hard resetting means you start either at the dungeon start, Temple of Time, or Kokiri Forest, it will probably be manageable to someone who is experienced at the game
Yep, things get freaky. It's a hacky hack.
The lizafols battle in Dodongos Cavern is fucked, for example, in 30fps.
They end up out of sync, jumping onto the lava, into walls
Luckily you can turn 30fps off in the menu options, in the OOT start menu/inventory
Problem is you don't know it's a problem until it's happened. So in my example, you're locked in a room. You've got a broken boss battle with no choice.
I've been playing OOT since December 1998 so I don't give a fuck, but its definitely not good for a first playthrough
Yeah the 30fps patch is super funky if you’ve never played before, and the other patches it has can cause frequent crashes
thanks!
looks like other game hahaha wtf
yeah don't play the 30fps hack first.. or maybe at all
You could just play the 3DS remake if you want 30FPS.
Id recommend the PC port. Ship of Harkinian. Has up to 240fps, with no issues, any resolution or aspect you want, dual stick control, gyro, plus you can install a mod that gives you all the 3D models and maps ported from OOT 3DS
It's functionally the same as playing the 3DS version aside from the different menus/dual screen and of course, the 3D
For example. Second screenshot hasn't got the NPC and player 3DS port mod turned on
https://gamebanana.com/mods/games/16121 mods galore here
Also, it has randomizer built in. Best thing ever.
But we're on the MiSTer Discord
https://www.amazon.com/Mod-Kit-Original-Controller-Support,Rumble-64/dp/B0DHR879M9
who else was curious about these? i got mine, fitted it, works great on mister including rumble, AMA
A modification kit that can easy to transform your original wired N64 controller into a controller that can play N64 games on Switch. Please calibrate the joystick before use! ! ! (Click the link below to download the calibration video): https://we.tl/t-XGgU0Tw2IU
Why would I want 8K 200fps?
Good point!
Mister is life
But sometimes you want stuff like this in your game
On the topic of MiSTer, I found a wide-screen patch for Kirby 64. Played through it on the turbo core and it's flawless. If anyone wants a patch, it's here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p-gIHpDdzAk
https://www.dropbox.com/s/mp8kdbypwcsnf3j/kirbyws.ips?dl=1 is a link to a widescreen patch for the US version of Kirby 64 the Crystal Shards. You need an expansion pak for it to load. Save type must be set to 16-kbit eeprom to save.
I always forget Kirby 64 had a few options for the HUD and get slightly surprised when I see someone using one that's not the default-
Zelda 64 recompiled is also a great option if you want to play Majora's Mask in a higher framerate https://github.com/Zelda64Recomp/Zelda64Recomp
It will also support OoT eventually
Definitely, it has really really low input lag and still has better culling than 2ship2harkinian.
But 2ship2harkinian edges past it with the crazy amount of options and mods
I started playing a new playthrough on MiSTer, then moved to the recomp...and now I'm at Ikana Canyon on 2ship
Nice! Both MiSTer on CRT and recomp/2ship are great ways to experience Zelda on N64. I still prefer the kind of eerie/mysterious visuals with 240p in CRT. But, the improved framerate, controls, camera etc make ik it a very playable and enjoyable experience on PC (with PC lcd monitor). Curious how it would look like on a PC CRT...
I guess I could test that with my LG Studioworks 900B (after I've tested that my HDMI to VGA adapter works properly on it)
Sony Bravia 9 will rule them all!
Wow the original goldeneye dropped to 7fps in some areas?
Welcome to N64
Yeah that is a Rare developed game alright.
people were too buzzed that they could target limbs and shoot off hats to care about the frame rate
(at least I was in 1997...)
😂
in some maps with four players the framerate drops to 1, especially when you shoot the rpg
also dual weilding the RCP90 in the jungle tends to tank the framerate also
when there's a lot of guards on screen
driving the tank on the runway while the miniguns are shooting at you
the mines in the chase level with the tank all going off at once
and the entirety of the archive lags terribly which is why half of it is sealed off in multiplayer
The dark days. Thank goodness for the turbo core.
Try being in the UK or another PAL region and suffering even more.
Ocarina of Time was 17fps max
16 and 2/3fps is such an odd framerate
Suffering? PAL is life
PAL is hell. I even noticed as a kid. Those conversations were so very very bad.
Yeah, some were good conversions (eg. Rare's games, as they are here in the UK and did PAL right), but then you have the mega drive where sonic is literally in slow motion
Slow the refresh and don't resize for the higher resolution, jobs a good un (or not)
I'm offended by how people like @magic girder invalidate my childhood trauma by saying PAL wasn't the worst thing in history!
I'm always mindful that replicating PAL is still important historically to see how the game played. Even if slower than developer intentions, it can be someone's (me!) nostalgia.
Sonic ain't slow, he's too fast on NTSC far as I'm concerned.
It's great we can all enjoy our own way, but prevalent PAL bashing seems sad to me.
Surely in a community of people recreating the exact sound of consoles, corrected for the analog aspects. Correct aspect ratio. People wanting to play on CRT.
Some of us playing on PAL by choice in 2024 should not be surprising surely!
nerds
Your damn right we are
PAL is widescreen
I see shoddy PAL conversions (the majority of them) as no different to taking a film, fucking the aspect ratio up, and watching it 17.5% slower.
Yes I might have grown up with it, but now I realise just how much we were fucked over with regards to the original product/vision that the USA and Japan got.
I will never willingly play a pal title now unless there's no other option, and even there those examples usually have a 60hz patch
For those who can look past the issues - great, I wish I could!
fuck that slowdown
This is so true brother. Let it all out.
PAL is only desirable with Commodore 64 and Amiga, where the vast majority of demo software is (still) written and designed to take advantage of the clock differences per frame.
Otherwise, it's an abomination... just like NTSC. 😉
cast the pal people out into the wasteland
let them forge their own path. LONG LIVE THE ENCLAVE!
Laughing in PAL-M.
Fear not travelers. There is an Oasis out here, with sweet sweet 50Hz water, composite rainbow banding be gone!
You forgot the master system
There were a lot of PAL only games 🙂
But I do agree with @chrome quest that it’s important to preserve both means of playing the games
I tend to default to NTSC if the game came out in Japan or the USA, but PAL if it’s Europe only - because playing a game too fast is just as bad as playing it too slow
But I will admit that a fair few games do now feel too fast to me 😅
Especially the WWF Smackdown games on the PSX. They’re waaaaay too fast in NTSC
I'll mix and match too for sure. It's great both just work, especially when trying to get modern hardware that will play nicely with a PAL CRT
Didn’t a lot of our later CRTs support 60Hz? I could def play DC games on my CRT at 60, not sure if that’s the same as full NTSC support though
I presume it must be, because something “must go” for a finite amount of bandwidth
Pretty much all CRTs did 60Hz no problem. At most it would need some pot adjusted a bit. But very few PAL tvs before late 90s could decode NTSC. Fortunately we had RGB on a majority of models via SCART, so we could play imports on all systems that supported RGB. NTSC would show up in black & white.
That’s cool to know. Thanks for explaining
I think you're right, alot of PAL CRTs can also do 60Hz. A great thing about MikeS composite implementation is that it can also set PAL-60 values to get around that historic black and white problem too! It's amazing!
One tweak to the ntsc_mode in INI. I think it says it's experimental, but all working great here in technicolour!
i played twilight princess on my cube in pal 60
nintendo asked me before i started playing
i said... YES, SURE
it's a prompt before you start playing
One day I aspire to be a man of the tubes
Yeah, the GameCube era was when I realised I could hold B and boot up the game in 60hz.
This was obviously 2001 or so, but 60hz worked fine on our sets then
Sony CRTs always had very good 60hz support. We had one from 1995 which worked fine with a USA console.
Maybe your rich kid crt did. I was poor! I am poor!
You're also kind of forced to accept PAL if you play Master System games. There are a lot of PAL exclusive releases, so this is almost unavoidable.
Yeah it's unavoidable, there's some codemasters games which are Europe only too like Micro Machines 2
The thing is, these titles are by and large developed by UK/EU developers for 50hz
So they're fine
Those arguing PAL was inferior. Yes, arguably, even definitely. Still, we in these territories had RGB as standard, NTSC were using composite at best. That and we've got actually plugs and power supplies which don't blow.
Grass isn't always greener on the other side...
Just ‘muricans being ‘muricans
I for one wouldn't have swapped gaming on a ZX Spectrum then Amiga 500 at that time for anything else going on in NTSC territories.
Sonic in "slow motion" somebody said. Well, yes, comparatively, but what kind of kids or young teens were bothering about measuring the differences over a 5fps boost and not instead just enjoying the damn games.
gamecube even had games that were 60hz only on PAL
i think wind waker was one of them
Right, but again, who was playing WW 480i on a CRT and not being entirely happy with what was being output...
I can't speak actually, now I think about it
I played through wind waker in a caravan in Devon 20 years ago with the GameCube hooked up to a Gameboy advance as a display. I couldn't even read the text. Glorious 160p.
50hz is better than that
I think it's fair we can nitpick and call out the flaws that 480i bring but - for me at least - playing PS2 for example on an even semi-decent CRT was much much more than the sum of its parts.
Pleb mode? Software emu at native res? 😅
same shit
Even software emu at native res isn't as pleb as original hardware cuz you can still push a solid 30/60fps when the console wouldn't
Unless looking at it from the other perspective of you're a pleb who doesn't own original hardware

At which point I'm guilty on a few counts but not all
Plebwen
But I have a MiSTer so I don't feel like I need to buy any more hardware
of course you do. you always need more hardware.
Can PAL save games be used on ntsc games? Is there a converter or anything, will they just work or fundamentally just not work? Particularly OOT, lylat wars (assuming that won't work as it has a completely different name?), perfect dark, goldeneye
Just want to run the games at 60hz, maybe they have been patched for that on mister or something?
Also using turbo core does that make a difference between them?
Even though N64 games never reached the cap, I believe PAL had some other framerate limitations?
Saves are usually hit and miss between regions. Can only try on a case by case basis I think. Usually things like user input names will break with language changes for example, but by and large, I've found most saves will convert just by making a copy and altering the name.
When that isn't enough, often you can make a quick and dirty hack by generating new saves for each region, comparing in a hex editor, and copying over any clear header data that is differentiated between them into your desired save.
Thanks do you know about the pal vs ntsc on mister question in terms of performance? I also read you might be able to run pal games in ntsc mode on mister and it boosts framerate? Or pal are patched?
Is there anyway to play F-Zero X Expansion Kit with the ability save vehicles and courses?
Want save on the DD I don’t think. It only kind of works
I still play it over the original fzero x on my MiSTer just for the stereo soundtrack
Game progress saves at least
Hey all, just dipping into the N64 core and seeing some strange things with Goldeneye. 1) Game freezes if I select the leftmost “folder”, the others work fine, 2) when I enter a level the game settings seem to reset (audio starts at 0 and control scheme reverts to a default), 3) I can beat the Dam and move on to the facility, but if I return to the mission select only the dam is available.
Am I missing some mister setting to support saving or something? I have autosave on and am playing via snac.
Yup sucked being a PAL region for console especially when the conversion was left to the hardware
Luckily the import market was very vibrant at the time helped by how much we were getting shafted over pricing compared to the US
PAL had benefits on the likes of C64 and Amiga though
I recently found a videotape which had a load of footage of SNES and N64 games I recorded as a kid, all recorded through the VHS player through RF (had TV pass through)
It was pal of course and looked really bad, but totally awesome in a nostalgic way
You can enable stereo sound in the core for it????? Cuz it’s famous for only having mono audio despite the awesome soundtrack
I haven’t seen a home recorded VHS in >20 years. I can’t imagine how bad the quality must be looking at that today 😅
Not quite - the 64DD version has vastly more space, so they included extended and stereo versions of the tracks on the disk. They play without changing settings
If you're playing the 64dd version, it's playing the stereo soundtrack, without edits.
So you just start up the DD version and just play the regular game tracks and instantly get stereo sound. Nice
Yep
But does the game save your progress like the cart? Cuz I k ow the DD editor stuff can’t be saved yet
Not seen this issue. Maybe try a different rom?
Look. As I stated previously. Yes, we in PAL territories got the short straw in regards to a lot of videogame conversions - black boarders, reduced speed and the like. However. You have to take the rough with the smooth. We were rocking RGB as standard and powering our electrical equipment properly and safely, not via that 2 prong weak AF plug in NTSC territories. Lastly, Amiga and proper football, NOT soccer.
In an ideal world id have wanted the best of everything but given the choice I'd have not swapped living in a PAL territory for America - for example.
I love how literally none of us former-PAL gamers are gonna let that drop 😂
How about that N64 core, though? Pretty cool, right?
yeah, but you people had to live in a world where you paid per minute for local phone calls
you know how long I could stay connected to my local BBS? forever. for free
Hey man I could stay online as long as I wanted here in the UK in the late 90s and it cost me nothing
Cost my parents a bit though probably
It's true. How much do you think the fact you could stay on the internet as long as you liked without financial cost hurt young people's health health, sometimes living online and not having to negotiate the real world.
It is. And I never played a single pal version game on it and you can't make me!
Rakuga Kids is one that is pal and jp only
On the N64. Not sure if the 60hz patch works on mister
it meant you never went outside and risked injury and thus never had to deal with the health insurance system!
see, america continues to win
Can’t argue with that logic tbf
I stayed inside and played pokemon on gameboy, no pal on that display. So I had the best of both worlds.
not possible when your game of choice was pokemon
I choose you, bulbasaur! Use razor leaf on the monkey!
Fair point. Sadly however it likely was the origins of the obesity crisis...
It was probably McDonald’s that did that more than the internet 😅
Yeah but McDonald's kept my country peaceful for the last 80 years. 🇩🇪🇺🇲
Yeah I mean it was arguably a combined of both.
Check you have the game database installed https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/N64_ROM_Database
Those issues are how ge behaves without right save ram
Where does that go? Is it automatically added via update all?
Is it automatically added via update all?
Update all should be grabbing it
if issues persist make sure to save in the osd/turn on autosave
Will try this, thanks! I do frequent update alls but will see if this is missing.
I have a question. Do you also have the problem that the game Resident Evil 2 stutters at the beginning of the campaign on the standard core? On the turbo core, the game runs as usual.
stutters howso?
Thats how you know how powerful it is. More lag = Bigger boom.
Oh hey Discord didnt scroll down again
small indie company
There is slowdown on the standard core at the beginning of RE2
Then this problem seems to be well-known. But why does it run worse on the standard core than on the turbo core? On my original console, it runs just as smoothly as on the turbo core, and my N64 is not overclocked.
Because the standard core is a very close, but not perfect replication of the original hardware, due to the limitations of the DE-10 Nano (specifically the DDR3 memory having high and variable latency). The turbo core runs everything faster, so it can workaround some of these issues
Thanks for the brief explanation!
There aren’t many instances where the standard core is noticeably slower than original hardware - but RE2 is one example 🙂
No problem!
My man you don't even know the best of it
64DD exclusive tracks. Rainbow Road has a metal cover version of the Mario Kart 64 rainbow road music.
Do doo de doo de do de doooo it's the road that you goo
I think there's also three other exclusive tracks, for Big Foot, Japan and one other track
Playing it now with this awesome pad
Ok, so this worked like a charm. Fixed everything. Man I love MiSTer but I fall into so many traps like this. Have no idea why update all wasn't grabbing it for me :/
mistertraps
Best way to play Ocarina and Majora's in 2024/5 is Ship of Harkinian, yes or no?
I'm going to suggest yes.
is there a mario kart 64 dd version?
No.
yes. there are some 3ds texture packs that are missing from the mods to fully upgrade the experience but even without them it looks incredible.
Yes, or on the 3DS itself
Grandma picked up the phone, there went the internet
She also used to vacuum right in front of the TV when I was watching it
Dirtiest spot in the house apparently, seemed like she vacuumed there for hours when I was playing megaman
I booted it up last night to hear the difference and it was great
Now I hear there are exclusive tracks - game of the weekend 🤘
Has anyone else experienced this strange colorful banding type of behavior with the core on analog output?
It's a bit less pronounced in person
For comparison, on my HDMI LCD:
I'm using the MisterAddons IO Analog Pro v1.1
Is there some setting somewhere I don't have set right?
Everything looks great otherwise, it's just especially in dark areas it looks like this
The game is the Sands of Time OoT romhack but I was playing vanilla OoT the other day and getting the same thing
On both the turbo and regular (stable release) core
Another example from vanilla OoT and stable core 24.11.09
Bottom is on my LCD via HDMI out
The problem shows up pretty bad even on the OoT title screen, the grass has dark red patches all in it
Is it possible this is a core issue? Or are my settings wrong somehow? A problem with my new IO board? Any insights would be much appreciated
I also have a real N64 hooked up to the same CRT with no such issue
Just noticed I'm getting the same thing on FMVs on the PSX core :(
Seems to be a problem with 21/24 bit color? Hope my new IO board isn't faulty somehow
Forgot to mention I'm on component/YpPbPr
https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?t=7565
Does it still happen with the pwm cores?
Haven't tried yet but will give it a shot in a bit when i'm back at my setup
Still getting it on the N64 PWM core from 24.09.28
Is there an extra setting I have to enable somewhere?
What are your dip switches set to? I don't have this board, but any kind of switch inevitably gets set to the wrong position.
The 1.1 doesn't seem to have the DIPS
Unless I'm blind somehow but i've looked all over it
The pic is the 1.0 version
so that leaves the sync on green? or is that switch gone too?
Nah it's still on there and I have it set to "on"
I don't get a useable picture at all if it's off (it was initially off)
and you edited your ini file?
https://github.com/misteraddons/mister_ini/tree/main/Analog Video
For anything not rgb scart we turn composite sync off right?
Or is composite sync always on
Except for ypbpr ofc
My understanding was it should be on for ypbpr but I just tried turning it off and it made no difference so I turned it back on
thank you. THANK YOU. these plebs don't know shieeet.
wait. "OR" on the 3ds?
i retract my thank you
I've checked out the SoH versions again and they've got worse, so 3DS for sure.
YES
Can't stand audio dropouts
more like ship has SAILED, amirite
Since the newer MA boards output 24bit video, the PWM cores will not do anything unless it's in 18bit mode. The PWM cores take the 18 bit color space and interpolate it into 24 bits. The 24 bit mode should help with the banding, but since the N64 image was never meant to look that clean in component, it's possible that it's revealing some artifacts that composite was meant to cover up. In the N64 core you can also mess with the VI options under the core's Video & Audio settings to see if disabling one of those options helps (DO NOT modify Video Out if using analog - this activates Clean HDMI and will result in a black screen).
Setting VI Colorbits to 24 might fix the issue. VI bilinear off might help with the dots.
I'd suggest keeping it in 24bit mode because it really helps with color banding on the PSX, Saturn, and N64. But if you want to try 18bit mode with the PWM cores then that's fine too. They just might be behind due to Ruleset needing to add in the PWM stuff.
You can also add the PWM cores to your update_all pull by adding these lines to your downloader.ini
[Jokippo/MiSTer_PWM_Cores] db_url = https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Jokippo/MiSTer_PWM_Cores/db/db.json.zip
the newest N64 PWM core is from 10/02
That doesn't address the problem reported, which is a red tinge using ypbpr
For the red tint, it could be the way the TV handles component. I would try svideo too. I know MA said that getting component was the hardest thing, but the TVs video processing is a factor. Component on one of my TVs looks worse than Svideo on older consoles.
PAL is never desirable lol, especially on C64 😛
It's a necessary evil, especially on C64. 😉
But absolutely correct... not desirable.
Is the latest Turbo Core with Update all released? (I'm not at home to check)
The turbo core never comes down with update_all. It’s always been a manual install
Also it will never be included with update_all since it’s an experimental core and may cause unforeseen issues with games. If you ever run into an issue with the turbo core do not report it, it’s provided “as-is” and “use at your own risk”.
I love how every incredibly minor update that makes it to the stock core now has everyone begging Robert for a new turbo core 😅
We have been spoiled
I don’t remember what the fix even was. Resident evil textures? Wasn’t that fixed in the turbo core as it was?
Some weird RE2 texture glitch I think. Not sure if it was already working in the turbo core though
Although I guess more people play that game on the turbo core due to slowdown
Although - just saying - there’s a perfectly good version on the PSX…
But the movies aren’t compressed enough for my tastes
I think the N64 version offers a few improvements over the PS1 original
I'd like to report an issue with the turbo core.
I'm having too much fun with it.
24 bit doesn't make a difference, I've tried it. And I don't buy that it's just the clear signal revealing imperfections, I think something is definitely wrong.
The only setting that 'fixes' it is turning off dedither, not sure why that is. But I don't want that, I want it to look accurate to real N64
Also, I have the 1.1 version of the board which doesn't have those DIPs.
I tried composite also and it does make it less noticeable in places but it's still there
I think if it were the case that the component signal was just revealing inherent imperfections, they'd show up on the HDMI output, but they don't
It's not strictly a red tinge either it's just that tends to be the most noticeable part. If you look at the screenshots you can see there are patches of oversaturated green and blue too
It might be a bad board then. If you have a way to do direct video (HDMI > VGA > Component) and it looks good, then it's the board and not the TV. You can contact MA with your issues - there is a MA discord with a thread for the Analog IO Pro.
Yeah at this point i'm def most suspicious of the board. iirc you need special equipment to do direct video with component though :/
I did DM porkchop but he hasn't gotten back to me yet. Hopefully he'll see it soon
I appreciate your suggestions/help!
you can use these two adapters
but yeah - if it's too much trouble to try DV I'd ask for an RMA
Yeah I have the first adapter but not the second? I mean I have the VGA to male component but i remember reading that you need a special cable to make it work with most CRTs (can't remember the details because I never tried it after reading that)
Ah yeah - you need something to do SOG in the middle, so either your own circuit, or setting the MiSTer to RGB and using an RGB to YPbPr transcoder
https://mister-devel.github.io/MkDocs_MiSTer/advanced/directvideo/#setup-for-rgb-signals
IIS 64 lose a few grammar braincells if you give it a rumble pak instead of a memory pak at start up. Just thought it was funny. 😂
The best granmar and brutal typos are in the SNK games in Spanish!
I should also note that you shouldn't use the PWM builds if you have a 24-bit board, it might mess with the colors.
Taki’s 9.2 AV Pro is a 24-bit board, right?
Yus
This is true. And also that "Tiger" character from AODK who says "soy el hombre más fuerte del mundo!" 😄
@compact depot : AFAIK, Taki's 9.2 AV Pro is just a packaging together of the exact two current Sorgelig designs from the mister-devel github, no changes I think.
Here:
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Hardware_MiSTer/tree/master/Addons/IOBoard
And those are 24 bit.
does the f-zero x expansion kit cart conversion not save properly on the mister core? normal game progress is fine but trying to save custom courses doesn't seem to work
I'm pretty sure the custom tracks were saved to the n64DD disc not the cart, so doesnt work with the ROM conversions
that's a shame. i don't recall if it worked properly on my everdrive x7 or not
iirc it requires being able to write to the rom itself to save
if you get a summercart64 you can skip the conversions entirely and run the original disk images
i remember hearing that the guys who originally made the conversions want them gone already because supporting the original disks is more preferred but no one wants to bother because the conversions somewhat mitigate the effort lol
i remember hearing that. can't blame them, i'd rather everything have native 64DD support
is it possible the mister core will support loading DD disk images someday? not sure if that's in the cards (or if it would even fit on the fpga)
no idea but the 64dd doesn't really do much, it's got the RTC and the drive stuff and that's it
it's so delay tolerant that it can take a minute to respond if it wants to so honestly if there was some way to handle the drive stuff from the ARM side somehow it'd probably feel exactly the same
like if there was some high level way to emulate it without using the fpga it's probably fine
the RTC though might be a different story
i didn't realize just how little was going on under the hood lol
what's up with the RTC?
i remember discussion happening here from months ago about how RTC would have to be implemented via FPGA
however there's been multiple different implementations of RTC on N64 and none of them are compatible with each other, to support everything you'd have to support RTC 3 times
RTC on 64DD, RTC on Animal Forest, RTC via the Pokemon GB cartridges
i'd argue supporting 64DD's RTC supports the most amount of games but good luck going up against the animal crossing and pokemon guys lol
if animal forest just released on 64dd like it was planned to we wouldnt be in this mess
ah man, i didn't even remember all the different RTC implementations on the console. that's an interesting obstacle
still i would agree that the 64DD's is the most important, since the games library contains the most exclusives
at least with animal crossing and pokemon, they can be played elsewhere
i wonder if a patch could be made for animal crossing to let it use the 64DD, at least for the clock if nothing else
you'd need to update the game to recognize the 64dd, sorta like f zero expanion kit or that oot homebrew dawn and dusk which has a 64dd build
then you gotta decide how you want to handle the clock, probably would be best to have it as a "backup" in case it cant read the original cart's RTC
and then if you cant read either just default to that option where you input the time at boot
the initial clock setting might be an issue unless you can skip it by just copying the 64dd time if it exists
or you go all the way and just replace all calls with the 64dd rtc
makes enough sense, at least to my small brain. i imagine looking at how the f-zero x expansion kit and the zelda DD hacks "hook into" the 64DD would go a long way in this regard
i wish i was technically inclined enough to do things like this. regardless, here's hoping more developments happen eventually
praying for 64DD support on MiSTer so we can do this here too (recorded on SummerCart64 + dual cart adapter + modem cart)
we ain't getting anything more than what we've got right now for N64.
perhaps on a MiSTer FPGA 2.0 which would use a newer and more capable FPGA with more logic but that's a big if cuz right now there's really nothing in the works plans wise for updated hardware at least nothing that's been stated publicly
If y'all want to make yourself useful go make a fan translation for neon genesis 64. So weird that it has a korean fan translation and not an English one.
now this is what the DD was all about
im shocked that game hasn’t been translated to english yet
same with bangai-o
Yeah, I'm not even a native English speaker myself and I consider English to be pretty much the "middle ground" of translations.
Xmas really has arrived in full...
What is this "windows" they're talking about? Does it run on mister?
Windows - it's a rather obscure and niche OS which runs mostly on PCs.
Like the ao486 core?
Almost but not quite.
Sorry, I am being overly cautious and probably unnecessarily so. But please don’t link to any Nintendo de compilation efforts. Again, I’m sorry but just being extra careful.
@lament escarp is our resident Nintendo expert and can explain why
basically robby hates fun
Yeah Nintendo will violate everybody's backdoor if they so much as suspect that you could've spent one cent more on their products if pesky competition or legal fan projects didn't exist.
there, I explained it
Yeah and you used less words.
I forgot to mention that @hushed nova is our resident Robby expert.
Which is also the name of a PS1 game.
which is also not good
Hello ! could you save me from my PAL misery? I want to play NTSC versions of N64 roms (as 240p rendering is sadly much sharper than the 288p) on my CRT TV but i'd like to play it in my own language (french) especially for games like pokemon. Do you know if it's even possible. I tried wthout success to find NTSC rom patches for PAL roms.
What CRT you're using? I'm guessing not supporting NTSC (very rare in EU anyway)
Canadian versions?
This is interesting. I can't see any visual difference between NTSC and PAL roms on my CRT. Ultimately I just accept PAL roms for what they are and enjoy playing them that way, like I did when I was playing on the original systems. The last thing I would want to do is to stress out about patching every single PAL rom across all systems so that they can run at full speed.
its not like n64 games can run at full speed anyways huehue
Ooooo! Shots fired!
i tried mega man 64 on the turbo core a couple of weeks ago and was amazed to see that game run at anything above 10fps
Wait, does it run that bad on N64?
absolutely
with just a few npcs and some buildings on the screen it starts chugging pretty badly
are you referring to that one section in Castlevania 64?

Oh yeah, that one section, aka the whole game.
Just as Miyamoto intended
Before anyone gets mad I love the N64 lol
Oh, yeah? If you love N64 so much, why are you always in the Saturn channel?
Making amends for failing Sega in their time of need 😥
Sounds like you didn’t accept them into your heart
The Sega continues...
Hey, I bought the Saturn when it came out.
I didn't fail Sega... they failed me! 😄
Then I decided to give them another chance when the DC was released.
"Hey, this is really nice!"
"Yeah? Well... we're discontinuing it after only a year and a half. In fact, we're getting out of the hardware business altogether. See ya!"
"Dammit! They got me again!"
🤦♂️
The Dreamcast didn’t deserve to die 😢
Dreamcast cancellation was my first heartbreak
initially Sega was gonna go out of business entirely but a wealthy dude REALLY liked Sega games so he forgave Sega's debts and then on his deathbed gave Sega his fortune
so it could've gone so much worse for Sega
It’s a staggering amount of money
The Sega that lived on though hasn’t been the same. I miss their quirky build all the hardware you can attitude even if it was self destructive
Sega used to be WILD and now they mostly play it safe
which makes sense since you need console makers to agree with your ideas in order for your game to show up on their hardware
Yeah cause a Pachinko kingpin has been running Sega since 2004.
He did a hostile takeover of Sega and kicked out a bunch of Sega executives lol
You must! (I’ve only played the first three)
You could just play the first and leave it there 🙂
Should get Like a Dragon and then just spend all my time in the arcade playing retro games
“Yes, this feels right”
Speaking of dragons, the N64 game Flying Dragon was an interesting fighting game.
Flying Dragon, known in Japan as Hiryū no Ken Twin (飛龍の拳ツイン, Hiryū no Ken Tsuin, "Fist of the Flying Dragon Twin"), is a fighting game with role-playing elements that was developed by Culture Brain and released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998. Part of the Hiryū no Ken series, it was published in Japan by Culture Brain, and by Natsume Inc. in North A...
Flying dragon from culture brain? Underrated dev and underrated games
Super Ninja boys on snes and flying warriors on the nes are the definition of hidden gems
I like to take credit for tom and dds translations for translating the ninja boy series, I suggested via twitter and they took the suggestion to heart
guys
do you recommend this controllers for n64 core, in a scale from 1 to 10, how you you consider them?
thanks
Many 288p PAL games are just 240p streched over 288p making them even more blurry.
My small Sony BVM is already so sharp it makes no perceptible difference to the image to me. It might actually even be too sharp for my liking.
Compare Pokémon Snap NTSC vs PAL. This resolution mess happens whatever the sharpness of your CRT TV / Monitor.
Can you post an image of it, can’t see it without an account
https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Controller-Compatible-Raspberry-Nintendo-64/dp/B0C98MGV5G?ie=UTF8 its this
a lil url hackin
@weak hill Those are good controllers. They have a few minor issues you should be aware of:
- controller doesn’t have an octagonal gate like the original
- controller has a full analog range instead of the N64 clamped down values (core autocorrects this for all controllers though)
- the L and R triggers require you to push down at the edges instead of being able to push down across the whole button
Since it’s Amazon, I imagine it’s easy for you to return, so no risk in trying it out.
to be fair, you have to push the l and r buttons on a real controller at the edges too, right?
it's a hinged button
Nah, works fine across the whole button
Also that point is so minor I don’t know why I bring it up lol
technically there is a small area on an oem controller near the hinge that you cant press :)
im experimenting rn
I will fight u
youll never win...
In n64-kwando
i was born with three arms to be the perfect n64-kwando fighter
I went to go test again to make sure I’m not crazy but my n64 controllers are in a box and I’m too lazy to get it so whatever you say is now the forever truth
I'm sure the third party controller probably has less pressable area or something, i think you'll likely be more or less correct on the shoulder thing
I'm just being annoying :P
i remember early xbox one controllers had horrible shoulder buttons
so not all hinges are made equal
or maybe I’m crazy
they redesigned it later so the ones with the audio socket have more pressabvle area
yes, it says saffun
so, they are good controllers, cause whick option would be considere better than those controllers?
Better is subjective but generally the two options people like for wireless are these controllers and Nintendo’s own N64 controller which you can buy from Nintendo Switch Online.
For wired, it’s hard to beat an original controller and they sell USB adapters and there’s also SNAC/X for that too.
ok ok, thanks man
i didnt know the usb adapters existed, if i buy one, and i plug it into my "it will arrive soon" mister pi?, will it work like any other usb controller?
I’ve never used one so I can’t help you there, sorry. However I do know people love the Raphnet USB adapters and they’re selling an N64 one - https://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/n64_usb_adapter_gen3/index.php
The latest version of our N64 controller to USB adapter.
Only downside is that the site says it doesn’t work with the Switch, which may or may not impact you.
I think the N64 emulation on the Switch is decent and it’s been really improved since it launched. But you can’t beat the MiSTer. Literally best way to play N64 outside of original hardware.
yes man, thanks for the link, ill look after it
AFAIK any crt beyond the year 2000 will switch pal/ntsc no problem since the signal timing circuit is all digital and it was cheaper to make a universal board to sell to any market.
Kinda like how 110/220 power bricks became universal
Yeah - shouldn't be a problem for Canadian CRTs
Wonder how old yours is @flint thunder
I don’t like the cross style deadzone but i got a tribute64 and it has the same problem (but at least has an octagonal gate 🛑)
I understand why pot based sticks tying to emulate the “deadzone slop” of the n64 stick, but even with wobbly sticks you can kinda feel when the gears engage (aka when you take up the slack on the stick) but whatever.
When i’m back in n64 im gonna see if I can find my childhood n64 controller in storage
For now my tribute64 and saffun are good enough for players 1&2
thanks ill watch the video
i see it supports rumble, the saffun doesnt
so i guess the onlye controller that doesnt have the cross dead zone problem would be the n64 online controller selled by nintendo, and an old n64 controller, right?
Haven’t tested the NSO or the 8bitdo halleffect
Is just a question of firmware. Is the deadzone on a per x and y axis or is the deadzone just the center square of the stickbox movement
Those who swear by the Saffun N64 controller are kidding themselves and others. It's way, way off being a good controller.
It goes a OEM, NSO, Hori Pad Mini, then everything else is trailing.
I would put the 8bitdo kit (with an OEM stick) above the NSO by a wide margin.
I'm quite happy with my Brawler 64, thank you very much.
As far as N64 controllers go, they all suck. It was a horrible design.
Arguing about which one's better is like trying to figure out which bowl of shit smells the best.
(I loved the N64 controller, by the way... very unique controller for a very unique console 😉 )
Ok, as a paid employee of Saffun I’m putting the naysayers on my TO BAN list.
Do you have BABY HANDS for that Hori Mini?
I bought one and feel like I’ve been lied to for the past 25 years. It’s a great controller for small children, not for adults.
I’m sorry for insinuating you have baby hands. I will learn to adapt my hands to the Hori mini and become stronger.
we can't all have soft fluffy man-hands like you Robby
This is the release trailer of B3313 Unabandoned A2: Anniversary Edition. This is NOT A3 and only includes the compression, optimization and hotfixes with no other feature additions, while A3 remains in development.
Get it on romhacking.com: https://romhacking.com/hack/b3313-unabandoned
Or the web patcher (more convenient for mobile users): htt...
B3313 has a console-compatible version now
Should work in MiSTer?
maybe!
It works just fine, from what I've been able to tell so far after approximately 15 minutes of play. I used the web patcher in the video description.
It's definitely... different.
Merry Christmas, here's hoping the Nintendo 64 core can boot up one game!
Heya! How's 2022?
The Christmas I got my N64, I found it in the top of my parents closet. I didn't move it or open it, but I would check that the box was there, like a little ritual until Christmas morning. When the MiSTer started booting N64 games, it made me a little choked up. The N64 has its quirks but it means alot to me.
It's been great hanging out here with other people who care about the system. Merry Christmas 🎄
Even though I had purchased a few previous consoles on release day, the N64 was the first console I ever pre-ordered. I was so excited being able to pick it up 3 days earlier than the official release date at Toys R Us. I think I still have the N64 tote bag my pre-order came with. That was such a game changer of a console. So many fond memories. Sure, there were quite a few stinkers in the library, but the good games it had were really good.
No. I don't have "baby hands" - whatever the hell that means. I'd say I have neither small nor large hands, rather the appropriate size for somebody of my sex and height.
The Hori Pad Mini is indeed 'mini' as the name suggests competitive to an OEM controller but it's not a lot smaller in the hands compared with say a PS1/2 controller for example, just shaped very differently.
Added to that it's why I listed it 3rd place as it's not my go-to - an OEM will always be the preferred - but still an interesting controller and sits very snug in the hand.
No joke, i got banned from the n64 reddit for criticizing the saffuns!!
Behold the most powerful n64 controller (that basically no games have good button mapping for)
Smacked down by big saffun
Saffun is neither big nor little but appropriately sized for its sex and weight, thanks.
Sounds fair, somewhere between Uraffun and Juffuniter
Uraffus and Juffiter works better, but where's the fun in that
So does one game work yet? I’m not clear 🤣
Only the quest of Brian that shall not be named
I think I saw a video clip of Pac-Man running...
Lies. N64 is impossible
can't imagine it's already a year now, still feels like yesterday
"yesterday"...
So 3DO core by next Christmas? 🤣 (merry Christmas)
What do you reckon it’s going to take to get a Fpga developer to work on a 3DO core? Patreon? Free 3DO console? We need 3DO!
good games, but as we say in germany: the train has left the station (long ago)
hopefully some one will show up who likes the games and is motivated. I tried multiple times by watching top lists of games for it and couldn't find any that would justify 1000h+ of work
but but but way of the warrior 😄
I see we’re your coming from there, I have a 3DO console and don’t have many games for it but enjoy what I have and have nostalgia for it, but I can see it would be a lot of work for someone who does not like the system. I just wish it had been more popular because there aren’t many fpga developers around so that makes a core more unlikely. Anyway thanks for the N64 core, it’s the reason I bought a mister and Merry Christmas
If you don't have the nostalgia already, it's probably much harder to get excited about the games. There are no real big exclusive titles.
Not saying you can't have fun with them and I'm sure that people would like to have the core, but given that the effort is even higher than for psx or n64 due to less low level knowledge being available makes it really tough
the only good starting point is that the CPU is already available in different cores
Just curious in case you've investigated the 3DO architecture: Since the games use a high level OS for hardware abstraction, wouldn't it be enough to implement something that "just works" for the OS/library functions instead of needing accurate hw implementation like other consoles? Or it would be the same as it is for PSX where there's also a ROM OS?
Your right about the big exclusives, most of my favourite 3DO games have ports on PSX and Saturn. I think it’s just the thought of preserving the hardware and feeling that nostalgia that your playing them on the systems you used to play on. I’m sure something will come along eventually but on this mister fpga I’m not sure, maybe @cerulean elk can use his YouTube millions to pay a programmer 🤣
It’s both. Opera is high level but there is still the entirety of low level hardware that needs to be implemented properly. 3DO was just unique in that it has Opera as a high level OS. The good thing is documentation is very comprehensive. It just takes a fan
@wanton sun , if wasn’t for the Mister’s hardware limitations, is there any core/system left that you would like to work on or see it implemented in FPGA?
i know what @cerulean elk and i would like to see
@wanton sun As for public information on 3DO hardware being scarce, wouldn't it make things easier? -->https://github.com/trapexit/portfolio_os
I mean, wouldn't it have been easier to implement the PSX if the ROM sources would have been available?
Good games?
Nah... that can't be it.
Look how far the CD-i has come so far. 😏
They also have that N64 joystick for PCs
I ain’t AzumSpass’ agent but he’ll work on what he wants and won’t be swayed by anyone.
So I wouldn’t bug him too much on working on other systems.
unless it’s virtual boy
||im kidding lol||
Not as good as NSO, sorry
liar
Ok fine, I lied! Are you happy now??!?
happy about you lying? more like sad

Sorry dude, I was just making a bad joke. Genuinely didn’t mean to imply anything. It’s a great controller and I’m glad I was finally able to buy one. Thanks for your recommendations up there btw, awesome to see people with so much knowledge and passion share that with others!
Really. I can take some ribbing and wasn't offended. It is a particularly small controller. My first time only recently having one in my hands the pictures didn't quite sum up just how small, comparatively.
Still I'm very glad I now own one as the build and feel of one is not easily replicated.
i've owned a couple of hori pad minis and could never get comfortable with them
it's a bit small for my hands and i felt the analog sticks on mine were rather loose
i don't play a ton of n64 games, but for f-zero X and star fox 64, nothing beats the original controller for me just yet
Mine was bitten by a child or a rabid animal, I’m unsure lol.
A rabid child
That stick looks like it was AI generated. 😄
Maybe it was left in the hot sun?
these days there's not much difference
doesn't the 3DO have
WILD WOODY
not as much as you would expect. For 3DO the CPU is basically known with open source implementations or the GBA cpu, so there is not that much to research from OS side. On the other hand, low level CD or GPU behavior is unlikely to be found in these sources.
robert, apologies if this has been asked already, but does the 64DD have any future on mister? i was curious if native support for the disk images is possible, or maybe patches for the cartridge conversions to change saving to FRAM?
I heard the new mister multisystem may have a bigger fpga. that'd be cool if it unlocked more options for mister core developers.
Unfortunately not, it was a Sega CD exclusive
It's true as I stated earlier an OEM is always the preferred and by some distance, needs to be a good stick mind you, but the Hori is great for an alternative. Definitely the stick is a lot more sensitive due to it's nature.
except it is/will be by far a minority of 'mister' devices out there, so developers are going to still have to take into account that some large percentage of their user base is using a normal mister
Yeah that is true, but if some devs develop on it just for fun or for their own curiosity, it might make people feel inclined to getting one.
heck if it could handle 32X CD, that would be amazing
what are they using a bigger cyclone?
I'm not even sure you can do that and maintain compatibility with all the existing cores without recompiling them
Low level CD isn't necessary on the PSX core if I understood correctly. Is the 3DO different in that regard?
the psx core does low level CD commands, but is not emulating the real CD controller microcontroller behind. Still you have to support all commands and timing.
I haven't looked into the 3DO cd system to give a good answer, but from all i have seen so far, all the 5th gen CD handling was still wild with developers trying tricks e.g. to improve loading times
It's not a simple: "load some data and copy to ram"
the core has a hard time to fit already, so I don't see any possibility to add more things with the current hardware. Also to be honest, i'm not much interested in what the 64dd offers
dont most N64DD games have a port to the n64?
The ports are considered hacked and broken by the people who made them, who now wish they hadn't as it has become a disincentive for emulators to support the original format properly.
Much as I part loathe Analogue I'm genuinely interested as a N64 fan and supporter all of my life just how good the core they have running out of the gate is - in regards to compatibility, accuracy and extras. Working on it for almost 4 years allegedly.
Maybe loathe is too strong...
I think they'll have a success if they can significantly improve the poor performance of the original hardware (Overclock mode). By this point anyone that wants an N64 likely has one for the real experience. Between Robert's amazing MiSTer cores and real hardware Analogue needs to differentiate themselves. It'll still sell regardless, as all Analogue products do, but to really separate itself it needs to take performance to the next level.
Agreed in regards to the mooted overclocking being the most interesting part of this equation. The 4K output while not native the icing on the cake. I mean all the units have already sold out but not quite to the level of other previous products proving perhaps N64 isn't a general favourite. I hope we get more info and even maybe some preview/review units being put under scrutiny before it's likely March release.
Man, that's wild.
I wish 64DD was properly supported in an emulator.
Thanks for your view on the matter. I was lacking information as usual...
i would seriously consider getting an analogue 3D if it had composite/s-video/RGB output. i suppose they could add support for their external DAC down the line, but they said they were going to do that for the duo, and it never happened
how are you gonna have a company named Analogue and your consoles don’t even have analogue output 😭
I am excited for their N64 device, no interest in picking one up but I think it’s pretty cool that they’re doing it.
It’ll likely cause a small spike in N64 collecting too
Now I see why you still have your physical collection. Holding out until the analogue device comes out so you can sell at a big profit
Very abundant? Terrible game?
The ares emulator supports direct 64dd disk images as well as the Summercart64 flashcart
So at least on PC and official hardware you don't need the cart conversions
simple64 doesn't have native 64DD support, but it does support saving to rom, so the cartridge conversions should work fine
still, native support is better
i would continue using my real n64 + summercart, but i've been very much spoiled by the mister core, especially the turbo one
I genuinely didn't know that. Thanks, friend!
