#

yes, it's a common issue that seems to happen in the scaler as i have seen it in different cores(e.g. psx) now. It happens randomly since some months (maybe framework update) with random core build. I also have a even better turbo core timing that also shows it

#

yes, the synthesis that builds the date was not run again, only the fitter for timing closure. So the build date was still the old

#

sorry for the confusion

#

i will instead release the old test build. No one complained about it, even though the timing is slightly worse

mossy vector
#

Can you fix the release dates in these cores without recompiling?

blissful plaza
#

Nothing new to report on my side on the two test versions of the core.
Tested on a Dual RAM (DE10-Nano) and Single RAM (Mister Pi) builds.
No new bugs or issues found since yesterday on 50 selected games and played them 15-20 mins each.

Just curious: The new official name for the the N64_80MHz core will be N64_turbo now?

#

About the new vanilla build, I tested 13 games and everything is fine at my side too

wanton sun
#

no, cannot fix the date without new compile

#

and the name will not change, just a name for the test build

#

both releases should be available with updater now

The whole thing is a problem we made ourselves but the value of having the community be able to make posts outweighs the nuisance of having to boot people when we hit the member limit.

Ultimately we want conversations on cores to be driven by the community. Not because it’s an “official” channel we make.

neat sierra
#

I’m pro banning any Logans, unless it’s Wolverine

zinc dew

And we didn’t want to play favorites with cores either so we weren’t going to make a channel for every core. So having it as a post made by the community is the best solution.

junior pine
#

Do you guys happen to know how to enable the N65 Turbo core in update_all? So far I have always got the vanilla core only 😄

vagrant ivy
#

you cant

#

its not part of update all

junior pine
#

Thanks, Tim! Tim the Enchanter! 😄

vagrant ivy
#

Turbo core was meant to be a special core for unique side cases. For some reason people seem to like running the N64 that way even though its not accurate.

junior pine
#

I also see why... some games seem to have better framerate with it

vagrant ivy
coral timber
#

So I completed an OoT Speedrun today using the MiSTer but upon looking back at the footage I can easily tell that the amount of console lag currently doesn't seem to be replicated correctly in the current core.

Was wondering if this is known? I had Fast ROM and Fast RAM access in debug menu switched to off but maybe there's something else to change settings wise to have the console lag be replicated accurately?

I can post the run's video as a comparison point if it helps.

vagrant ivy
#

The core is known to not b e 100 % accurate

#

some parts have to run faster to allow for the De10 Hw limitations

#

its not a core that should be used for speedruns , although its an incredible achievement

coral timber
#

Ah, so it's not quite the same situation as some of the less powerful console cores like SNES then?

vagrant ivy
#

Just because its FPGA does not mean it magically becomes 100 % accurate

#

The N64 is above the capability of the DE10, Robert performed Magic getting as close as he did but only a more powerful FPGA will allow 100 % accuracy

little socket
#

believe the enchanter or analog press material 🤔

steady basalt
#

It would be nice if the speedruns site accept the Mister as a separated way to people compete, like they already do with Virtual Console and the others.

little socket
#

i wonder how large the performance differences between multiple DE10 setups are due to silicon lottery

vagrant ivy
little socket
#

though for speedrunning, you'd probably also need different lists depending on core release version

#

Then again people could also modify the core itself....
Ha! Finally a use case for the multi main feature, as it could be used to drm the cores.

tender pine
#

Anybody know if the Analogue 3D will allow for 100% accuracy based off it being a higher spec than any current available MiSTer setup?

green epoch
#

Yes but they all work for analogue

worn delta
#

Just because the spec is different/higher is no indication the Analogue core will actually be more accurate. You will need to wait and see after it has dropped and people start running tests on it and finding bugs.

marble cargo
#

There's probably going to be firmware updates once people start finding all the edge cases.

neat sierra
#

If it’s that one guy with the fpga n64 blog he spent over 5 years on it. But yeah who knows if even then he nailed everything

zinc dew
#

Hopefully he does!

#

They’ve got the added challenge of also natively outputting to 4K. So I’m guessing whatever potential benefits a higher spec has would be eaten by that.

neat sierra
#

Honestly who care if he does, it has no value if it’s not open source

zinc dew
neat sierra
#

Analogue hasn’t opened any of their other stuff or shared findings so I doubt that will change

#

Yeah no value for hardware preservation

#

zinc dew
#

Unfortunately you’re also right : (

neat sierra
#

Yeah of course just saying accuracy questions are moot

#

It doesn’t matter because no one else can check the work other than the obvious bugs on screen

magic girder
#

It would be interesting to know how many bugs would remain in the current N64 core if Robert were to port it over to more capable hardware, where he could do the rest of the things that were on his “to-do” list. That would at least help to understand where there’s a knowledge/information gap that remains

#

That’s a somewhat academic point though. What we have at the moment is good enough for me 🙂

#

(“Good enough” sounds dismissive. What we have is awesome - and I’m super happy with it :D)

zinc dew
#

yeah, this core is ok I guess

cerulean elk
#

I know Robert will never admit it because he's probably too German and humble but I swear this new core update is just "one game by christmas" meme status

green epoch
#

I wouldn’t hold your breath for something better than the core. Analogue isn’t really after accuracy, they are nostalgia chasers. And if it’s good enough for the majority of their customers’ nostalgia, then the work will stop there. That is what has happened in the past, and there is no reason to believe it’s changed

upper pivot

Do you have a link for that?

worn delta
#

I am sure someone can dig it up, it was stated by them many times in the past. He hasn't done a new core since his ones for The Pocket.

#

Did Kevtris engineer 3D’s N64 FPGA core?
Kevin "Kevtris” Horton is the Director of FPGA Development at Analogue. All FPGA development is done by Kevtris or directed by Kevtris using our proprietary FPGA engineering methodology and in-house developed software & hardware. Analogue’s FPGA team is dedicated to FPGA Development and Electrical Engineering. Each and every FPGA core is developed with Analogue's unparalleled standard and no FPGA core will ever be released without Kevtris’s seal of approval.

#

This is in their own FAQ

#

So in short, no he did not develop the N64 core, they paid others to do it and he oversaw/checked/advised. He is in a boss man role there now.

upper pivot
#

I’m not sure if that’s the case or if they are trying to cover his ass legally

#

In case Nintendo gets lawsuit happy

mortal panther
#

If Analogue was worried about Nintendo, they wouldn't release the console in the first place.

neat sierra
#

So 8bitdo makes the hardware, and they just buy cores now, what does kevtris do other than not add support for the DAC? 😉

green epoch
#

that is a full time job currently

mortal panther
#

Now, if they failed to show the same restraint as Robert and decided to help themselves to some Gigaleak goodies... that's a different story.

neat sierra
#

Taber will lay him off next year

mortal panther
#

Unfortunately, you're never certain where the code comes from with closed source. It wouldn't surprise me to find large sections of MiSTer code in there somewhere.

#

But I guess we'll never know...

zinc dew
#

Even when outsourcing development, you need at least one director level employee to review all assets and ensure it’s done to specifications.

worn delta
#

Yeah, Kevtris is definitely not the main dev on the Analogue N64 core. I thought we knew who it was a year or so back, unless things changed.

trail swallow
#

I thought Kevtris hasn’t worked with Analogue in years?

worn delta
#

No, he is still there, but in this more senior role. He is the main dev on the Pocket stuff.

trail swallow
#

Oh, interesting

worn delta
#

I would expect he is heavily involved in the hardware design, the framework, and signing off all the code and making sure it is of a good standard and is working with his framework.

#

If you ever work in a dev team the more senior a developer becomes the less they actually code, somewhat ironically.

#

Until you eventually become CTO level of seniority and you don't do any coding at all.

Banjo Tooie has a 60fps patch which genuinely is the best way to play the N64 version of the game (as long as you use the turbo core). Game also has a proper wide-screen setting.

The game is built with a dynamic framerate, so it can run up to 60fps without animations or gameplay being affected. I got 40-60fps throughout most of the game using this core.

The patches that main/the core applies automatically are strictly compatibility patches rather than performance enchantments (to overcome some of the limitations of the DE-10 nano). Many games benefit from the turbo core automatically, by virtue of it just being essentially a faster running/more performant N64 - you don’t need to do anything other than run the games. The Mario Kart 64 patch that Robert mentioned is only applied on the turbo core, and is similarly a compatibility-style patch, to make it so that all tracks run at 30fps when playing 3+ player multiplayer (otherwise they run at the wrong speed).

There are other “enhancement” patches, like others have mentioned, which unlock framerates and things like that - but you’ll need to manually patch the games (as suggested); and they may break things (as Robert mentioned) because the games weren’t designed to run that fast. You’d probably also want to use the turbo core to benefit from those unlocked framerates.

#

(NB: when I say that many games benefit “automatically” from the turbo core - this is just a reflection of the fact that a lot of popular N64 games didn’t hit their frame cap 100% of the time on original hardware)

Thanks for confirming. Yeah just tried goldeneye and on the first level it makes a big difference, was roughly 7-30fps (consistent depending on the area/camera angle) increased to 11-39fps on the first level in my couple of run throughs each on each core looking at the fps counter. Very happy 🙂

Going from 7 to 11fps in busy areas doesn't sound like a lot but it's ~50% increase!

I presume it must be, because something “must go” for a finite amount of bandwidth

rustic fulcrum
#

Pretty much all CRTs did 60Hz no problem. At most it would need some pot adjusted a bit. But very few PAL tvs before late 90s could decode NTSC. Fortunately we had RGB on a majority of models via SCART, so we could play imports on all systems that supported RGB. NTSC would show up in black & white.

Saves are usually hit and miss between regions. Can only try on a case by case basis I think. Usually things like user input names will break with language changes for example, but by and large, I've found most saves will convert just by making a copy and altering the name.
When that isn't enough, often you can make a quick and dirty hack by generating new saves for each region, comparing in a hex editor, and copying over any clear header data that is differentiated between them into your desired save.

# night silo Still getting it on the N64 PWM core from 24.09.28

Since the newer MA boards output 24bit video, the PWM cores will not do anything unless it's in 18bit mode. The PWM cores take the 18 bit color space and interpolate it into 24 bits. The 24 bit mode should help with the banding, but since the N64 image was never meant to look that clean in component, it's possible that it's revealing some artifacts that composite was meant to cover up. In the N64 core you can also mess with the VI options under the core's Video & Audio settings to see if disabling one of those options helps (DO NOT modify Video Out if using analog - this activates Clean HDMI and will result in a black screen).

Setting VI Colorbits to 24 might fix the issue. VI bilinear off might help with the dots.

I'd suggest keeping it in 24bit mode because it really helps with color banding on the PSX, Saturn, and N64. But if you want to try 18bit mode with the PWM cores then that's fine too. They just might be behind due to Ruleset needing to add in the PWM stuff.

You can also add the PWM cores to your update_all pull by adding these lines to your downloader.ini

it's so delay tolerant that it can take a minute to respond if it wants to so honestly if there was some way to handle the drive stuff from the ARM side somehow it'd probably feel exactly the same

#

like if there was some high level way to emulate it without using the fpga it's probably fine

#

the RTC though might be a different story

weary beacon
#

i didn't realize just how little was going on under the hood lol

#

what's up with the RTC?

ember linden
#

i remember discussion happening here from months ago about how RTC would have to be implemented via FPGA

#

however there's been multiple different implementations of RTC on N64 and none of them are compatible with each other, to support everything you'd have to support RTC 3 times

#

RTC on 64DD, RTC on Animal Forest, RTC via the Pokemon GB cartridges

#

i'd argue supporting 64DD's RTC supports the most amount of games but good luck going up against the animal crossing and pokemon guys lol

#

if animal forest just released on 64dd like it was planned to we wouldnt be in this mess laughingdog

weary beacon
#

ah man, i didn't even remember all the different RTC implementations on the console. that's an interesting obstacle

#

still i would agree that the 64DD's is the most important, since the games library contains the most exclusives

#

at least with animal crossing and pokemon, they can be played elsewhere

weary beacon
ember linden
#

you'd need to update the game to recognize the 64dd, sorta like f zero expanion kit or that oot homebrew dawn and dusk which has a 64dd build

#

then you gotta decide how you want to handle the clock, probably would be best to have it as a "backup" in case it cant read the original cart's RTC

#

and then if you cant read either just default to that option where you input the time at boot

#

the initial clock setting might be an issue unless you can skip it by just copying the 64dd time if it exists

#

or you go all the way and just replace all calls with the 64dd rtc

weary beacon
#

makes enough sense, at least to my small brain. i imagine looking at how the f-zero x expansion kit and the zelda DD hacks "hook into" the 64DD would go a long way in this regard

#

i wish i was technically inclined enough to do things like this. regardless, here's hoping more developments happen eventually

@weak hill Those are good controllers. They have a few minor issues you should be aware of:

  • controller doesn’t have an octagonal gate like the original
  • controller has a full analog range instead of the N64 clamped down values (core autocorrects this for all controllers though)
  • the L and R triggers require you to push down at the edges instead of being able to push down across the whole button

It's been great hanging out here with other people who care about the system. Merry Christmas 🎄

Even though I had purchased a few previous consoles on release day, the N64 was the first console I ever pre-ordered. I see we’re your coming from there, I have a 3DO console and don’t have many games for it but enjoy what I have and have nostalgia for it, but I can see it would be a lot of work for someone who does not like the system. I just wish it had been more popular because there aren’t many fpga developers around so that makes a core more unlikely. Anyway thanks for the N64 core, it’s the reason I bought a mister and Merry Christmas

wanton sun
#

If you don't have the nostalgia already, it's probably much harder to get excited about the games. There are no real big exclusive titles.
Not saying you can't have fun with them and I'm sure that people would like to have the core, but given that the effort is even higher than for psx or n64 due to less low level knowledge being available makes it really tough

#

the only good starting point is that the CPU is already available in different cores

junior pine

Your right about the big exclusives, most of my favourite 3DO games have ports on PSX and Saturn. Much as I part loathe Analogue I'm genuinely interested as a N64 fan and supporter all of my life just how good the core they have running out of the gate is - in regards to compatibility, accuracy and extras. Working on it for almost 4 years allegedly.

#

Maybe loathe is too strong...

broken creek
#

I think they'll have a success if they can significantly improve the poor performance of the original hardware (Overclock mode). By this point anyone that wants an N64 likely has one for the real experience. Between Robert's amazing MiSTer cores and real hardware Analogue needs to differentiate themselves. It'll still sell regardless, as all Analogue products do, but to really separate itself it needs to take performance to the next level.

tender pine
#

Agreed in regards to the mooted overclocking being the most interesting part of this equation. The 4K output while not native the icing on the cake. I mean all the units have already sold out but not quite to the level of other previous products proving perhaps N64 isn't a general favourite.
