Well, some people are very eager to get that uncensored squirrel on squirrel action so, our friendly neighborhood turtle is here to protect us from them sortsa shenanigans.

wanton sun
#

sorry, i don't understand it. A short, additional wait will make the game consistently crash/hang at boot? But you still made it wait for the DMA to finish?

#

but in any case, if a constant wait is not the solution, then it seems it's not timing related, but rather some real bug

wanton sun

lament escarp
#

So is the ddr3 random lag causing the crashes theory now disproven?

hidden bolt
#

there are still many parts of the game that use the ddr3 but at least for the tlb refill PI DMA it doesn't seem like the cause

lament escarp
#

Would it be possible/beneficial for now to make these patches for the prototype since it has a crash handler? Or are the crash reports from that too cryptic and not helpful?

the crash reports haven't really been that helpful for me at least

@mossy needle I look forward to your report. I just got a freeze after playing all the way up to the beginning of the poo level in the story. My buddy and I had been playing a bunch of multiplayer before that. This was with V1 of the patch, though...

Pops will be louder depending on your hardware outside of the TV and MiSTer. Its basically interpriting a "sudden signal" louder. Its louder on my Tink 4K than MiSTer to capture card and inaudible on my MiSTer to TV. So dont be surprised if you get a louder or quieter signal peak (pop) when playing

Dunno if mister needs special settings or not, but when I turned it on in conker, my sound system still just interpreted it as a 2.0 PCM signal. But there was a definite difference. It kinda just sounded like the left and right channels got a huge audio boost

He then proceeded to lead me straight to the multiplayer, when I saw his squirrel head get blown in half by a sniper...

#

It was the most shocking thing I'd seen on a Nintendo console up to that point, right next to the Cerebral bore...

He was hoping it would scare me from playing it the rest of the rental period. Instead, after the initial shock wore off I thought it was freaking AWESOME!

Imma go off on a tangent for a moment. Can we talk about how good the Enemy AI was for Conker multiplayer? They knew how to achieve objectives. They could pick a post and use it, ie sniping. They would take cover, and would choose strategic points and guard them. They would pause after killing you at close range, as if they were watching you die. If you committed too many friendly kills, your team mates will yell traitor and turn on you.

The list goes on and on!

#

I think the only thing they didn't do was use grenades, but I could be wrong.

Then again, I barely use grenades. They kinda blow...

quasi storm
deft tree
#

the layman does not have a MiSTer

#

he does however have a random windows laptop

#

If you actually cared about playing these games online, You would be, and would have been doing so for many years at this point

latent dagger
#

I remember talking about potential net play functionality and how it could possibly be implemented with Kit some time ago. I remember we settled on something as a possibility most likely involving having to send a video feed from one MiSTer to the other and the connected 2nd player is just basically doing remote play over the internet and not running the game themselves.

deft tree
#

which people have done proof of concept already with real arcade boards and mister using parsec

latent dagger
#

It did also involve some parsec backend bits lol

deft tree
#

which, surprise surprise, is way shittier netcode-wise than GGPO that fightcade runs on

latent dagger
#

Yeah but we were looking at what could be properly implemented under the MiSTer environment because doing it any other way that's tries to be asynchronous with save states would be way too much overhead

quasi storm
#

How did ZSNES do net play back in the day? That shizz worked on a Pentium. It didn't work WELL, mind you, but it worked.

deft tree

latent dagger

Decreased loading times and some extras are the pluses but some slightly more compressed looking backgrounds, a missing FMV (replaced by simply duplicating another), lower quality FMVs by a lot , worse sounds/voices are the drawbacks. But still a cool port

if anyone wants to know about the sound pops: n64 plays digital samples only and it has basically no buffer for them. So it needs new samples e.g. every 1/42000 seconds or 23 µs. If the sample is not provided in time, the sound fifo runs dry. This can happen if for example a long DMA for VI or PI(cart) is going on at the same time and the data isn't provided fast enough from RDRAM(ddr3).

#

we could maybe build a workaround for it (larger sound fifo and stretching sound instead of pop)

I would love a patch for Battle for Naboo. Not as a Star Wars fan, but as a Factor 5 Star Wars game fan. Sure the setting is lame, but gameplay wise, it's a sequel to Rogue Squadron, one of the best arcade flight sims on the system.

there was another area that I was able to get a consistent freeze, and I believe it was with the expansion pack enabled - if you enable the spark shot, and as soon as the fight against Birkin on the turntable begins, you turn around and take some shots at Birkin as quickly as possible, it's a very, very high chance of freeze

no idea whether or not it crashes in the lab or whatnot, but i suppose i'll try and finish my playthru from a few months ago to see at some point

frail jolt
#

No no..I men Robert Daud something that led me to believe he may do something

zinc dew
#

Oh, I think the patches might lead to an actual solution.

#

Not that these patches aren’t solutions, they’re extremely smart workarounds to a problem that was previously not known what was the root cause.

#

So I think it’s possible that there might be a future build that has these fixes incorporated because the patches helped expose an issue.

zinc dew
#

If that makes sense. Again it’s genuinely a great question. Writing a core is different than software emulation development.

#

The core’s goal is to reproduce the original hardware, warts and all. Meanwhile software emulators try to get the games working, warts and all. Both different and completely valid implementations. But a software emulator can incorporate a game specific bug fix while a core cannot, since it’s recreating hardware and has no software layer to work with.

#

So the core developer needs to debug what is causing the issue and fix their hardware implementation.

im curious if they make the games more stable on real hw

curious about something - if I was playing conkers on the prototype version when I was testing...would I be able to use that save file somehow on the newly patched version?

zinc dew

If you can find a save file that completed the campaign, you could replay with the ability to press L to skip cutscenes

magic girder
#

I can give you mine if that helps ^

foggy sun

oh! that would be amazing!

magic girder

Alright, give me like 30 mins and I’ll DM you

🚨 CODE VIOLATION 🚨

@foggy sun You have violated rule #417 - using other people’s save file

foggy sun

😐

zinc dew

You cheated not only the game, but yourself!

foggy sun
#

I just wanna live my life man...live it in a world where I can skip cutscenes in Conker

zinc dew

hahahaha

zinc dew
#

I think it’s cool save files are so portable

foggy sun
#

I've always found it fascinating that we can do things like that haha

zinc dew
#

It would be cool if there was a repository of MiSTer compatible save files tbh

foggy sun
#

yeah that would be really cool

#

like, if you wanted to just download a save of smash that already has everything unlocked or something - super useful to someone id imagine

dusty tusk
#

You could GameShark and save

🚨 CODE VIOLATION 🚨

@dusty tusk You have violated rule #108 - using a game shark to cheat not only the game, but yourself

@foggy sun For some reason it won't let me DM you the file. Hopefully nobody minds me using this channel... (You may need to rename it to match your ROM, but hopefully it works).

Yeah just use those roms and the pinned bps and that online site to patch and it's good

Quick tip for jet force gemini, with default expert controls, holding r button doesn't just give you free look. It allows you to move about with the cbuttons as well. This gives you pretty modern aim/move controls, just swapped

I've played Jet Force Gemini on an Emulator and I always wanted to finish it.

Hi All im a bit new to dischord and a bit of an old fogie. Does anyone know who I should contact about the decompliation project or recompilation project for n64? I know mario and Zelda has been modded for so many new effects to run nativly on windows computers. But Im wondering if anyone can decomp / recomp WWF No Mercy... there are so many cool mods for this game and really is the best wrestling game of all time. Would be so cool to add more effects or polygons using this new way of modding roms (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI8kUsIVDFg non recomp decomp mod)

#

One thing I’m noticing playing Conker now that it works is that the audio clicks a lot whenever characters are talking. I assume it’s the same issue as Perfect Dark with the mp3 decompression running up against limitations of the core.

sullen harbor
drowsy lantern
#

I don’t have clicking in any other situation than when characters are talking.

Nor in any other N64 game (aside from PD) nor any other core.

Another game doesn't fully work. Rugrats in Paris: The Movie. When you complete a mini golf hole, there's a obut a 50% chance the game freezes. It's not a masterpiece obviously, but just wanted to report this

I wonder whether the next vge vid will be "battling the battle for naboo" or "evicting the evil resident".

More likely similar to Conker, if it’s memory related?

i really wonder if now that cbfd and jfg works, out of a sudden, everyone will agree that naboo is a great game 🤣

How’s the Rugrats game? 😅

cerulean elk
