Just mario going around doing plumbling jobs
The gritty Wrecking Crew reboot
Finally we can find out WHY peach baked him the cake.
testbuild is only in the channel for now, not via autoupdate as it's only a early test of the async video out module. HDMI should be correct with right refresh rate, but analog out is not yet done
Based on this description, no game specific fixes?
no. main purpose is correct speed, centering, viewport and aspect ratio
👍
although i bet the aspect ratios are not right yet, they still need to be set, but it's only changing a number now
(if only i knew that number 😅 )
Iirc you mentioned async being a necessary step for cropping, I'm very happy to see this!
there is a vertical crop option now
and a "fixed blanks" option
fixed blanks will make the screen always do 640x240 pixels, no matter what the game does. It basically emulates the viewport of a CRT without overscan
if the games uses less resolution, you get black bars
So these changes are not affecting the analoge out as its still worked on, correct?
they affect the analog out, but it's not really correct yet
you can try, but at least interlaced will still have issues
ok, but it wont add black bars if resolution is lower then?
it's the very first version of a complete rewritten module, so expect issues
this is good update.
the module itself is the same size as the old sync one, but the PAl/NTSC clock reconfigure costs about 2% of the FPGA
Awesome update
will try it now, see how it looks
Ah, 2% is quite a bit
it's a module directly from altera that does it, not optimized at all. I tried to write my own version but it didn't work. Unfortunatly the PLL interface is not really documented, so i tried to capture what the altera module does, but it didn't work out
it seems like i'm writing the same to the PLL but it will not change the clock
will do another attempt with fresh mind in some weeks. I think the size of that module can be reduced by 80% or so
The most important question: Can we set mario kart to perfect in the compatibility list now
Fair enough
let's wait at least until the timings are really final
also i need to do the same for audio as well, even though this should be a smaller task
(audio uses the video clock, not system clock)
Left is old version, right is async. So async currently cuts off a bit of the left side
Ah, got it
Is this new vs old?
Added message
if that is all, it seems like a easy fix 🙂
Will motion adaptive be possible for those few games which allow 480i?
Also. Did I hear a 5x crop has been added in the latest build?
since we didn't see motion adaptive de-interlacing in PSX, I think its even more unlikely on N64
Quick PAL tests. Seems also to be slightly left shifted as @lean spruce found.
Fixed Blank seems to also crop well for a 640x288 PAL game.
World Driver Championship alot more stable. On old core analog output would jitter as resolutions changed.
Now from full screen menu -> Letter box intro cutscene -> full screen menu/gameplay. All smooth.
The in-game resolution switch to "HI-RES" that puts borders back on with increased resolution in the viewable portion, also now great on both analog output and HDMI
i would think we see a 480p option sooner than a motion adaptive deinterlacer, but with mister you never know. Tomorrow somebody could be making a pull request for the scaler to have it
Ooooh, this is a neat method to do interlacing I see
Counting half lines instead of full lines
But I see its of size 1024?
Can it not be more?
PAL is 625 lines, times 2 that's 1250
be funny if its just the gameshark rom
The gameshark rom doesn't work?
Iirc its kinda important because you can copy cpaks with it
not sure, maybe it does
but does the NES emulator that loads in the gameshark work yet
PAl is 625 half lines 😉
Oh right hahaha
my bad, it was loading homebrew through the GS parallel port
N64 GameShark Pro utilities using libusb. Contribute to hcs64/gs_libusb development by creating an account on GitHub.
you could load NEON and an nes game
i have yet to test this to see if it works on actual hardware, be neat to play megaman 2 on the NES
oh the first steps towards timing timings
Probably one of the known interlaced issues, but sharing in case perhaps useful.
PAL Stadium 2 (640x576i) - Top lines garbled over analog (HDMI looks fine)
Also, the analog image is quite stable, but the MiSTer OSD is nauseatingly jittery over analog when viewed in this game
Don't forget conker's pocket tales
@hollow rune @weary perch @weary palm
Good question
The development of this core and the addition of two n64 controllers to my retro nerd collection have prompted me to box and store my analogue consoles and give mister a larger, more prominent slice of my entertainment center. Thank you for all the excitement, Robert!
Hello?
I think he wanted to assemble the avangers or something.
This is my Avengers. Also, I'm Zelda. If you thought you were Zelda I have bad news for you.
Dibs on dark samus
Zelda is the dude in the blue shirt, no?
Dibs on the cliff.
Zelda and his iconic shield. Nice pick
Isn't his signature weapon the mister sword?
Your jokes remind me of this news report that my Mom and Dad showed me. https://youtu.be/iDhNAd_A2yY?si=kEyLtT5ifjEF1FGA
Arizona Midday host mistakes Link for a girl. It's the story of his life. Elves got it rough.
Might want to check the original console
It's probably closer to correct now than before but I wouldn't reference the previous build, it wasn't correct.
I'll use a real n64 for reference testing this week
Yep, interlaced needs to be tweaked
Maybe. Just pointing out that new core cuts left side. And why would N64 be off-center?
here is part of the title, which game is this?
Assman 64
Basshunter
Very good point. If you do a YC build I could compare, but in my also thinking PAL is left shifted, I'm comparing RGB SCART MiSTer to Composite N64.
And SCART can frustratingly shift the image, so yeah, could well be more correct now
SCART shifts the image?
On my PAL CRT, absolutely. Don't know if that's a common issue or not
It would surprise if the N64 shifts the image when my SNES, Saturn and PSX doesnt
but hey, that sort of thing didnt bother us back then. So maybe
My real n64 has a terrible shift for a commercial console in banjo haha
The async core centers it better
The main issue right now is sync on interlaced
That would suck, to have to adjust the CRT only for the N64 though
can you show Mario 64, since that was the game I used to test
I'll test it tonight
It’s pretty common with rgb scarts. If you have one of the ps2 scarts with the ‘dvd mode’ switch you can switch between the two and see the shift (and change in picture quality).
Assassin's Creed 64
Noticed Banjo-Tooie has been shifted to the right on my modern television, but it's not too much of an issue since the game has an option to adjust the alignment.
Perfect dark has been reverse engineered and ported to PC 😁
Dunno if I have need for async, so far picture's been OK on my CRTs on regular core
Unless that's still due analog output timings needing to be adjusted
The new async core fixed the issue I was having with my CRT
Enough progress to confirm Doduo mode running nice and stable. Lots to go to 100% Stadium 2 yet
Nice. Those games take forever. The speedruns are like 20 hours long when using the rentals
Yeah. I'm at least not using rentals, but not like my childhood team is well optimized by any means 🤣
I finished gym with rentals in stadium one with the teams that speedrunners used and it was still a pain
Pretty cool to digitise this screen over 20 years later (old core revision, before Doduo mode)
was it noticeable playing it at 50htz?
Noticeable how? That's all I've ever known 😄
I hate when i accidentally load the pal versions and my crt trips out
to this day I can hear the difference between pal/ntsc sonic 1
Same, Sonic 2 detects and optimize for 50hz.
Or how stupidly fast SMB1's music plays in PAL.
Music from Super Mario Bros. PAL version. Composed by Koji Kondo.
NES recording.
Just sounds like the timer is running out lol
Wow that's actually kinda ridiculous. Does it speed up more when the timer is close to running out?
@chilly ember The music speeds up, yes.
those bonus tracks are really hard
Most of them were okay, it was Venice Canals that I spent the longest time on 😦
until I realised you can just jump the wall and avoid a huge hairpin
Damn dude, that’s awesome!
thank you 😄
'Pig tries to complete something that isn't a racing game challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)'
You guys remember that version of MK64 Amped Up that doesn't properly boot on the core, like it goes to an error message screen? It actually boots now. You dont need that update anymore. @wanton sun cool huh?
What was the difference between the versions?
@wanton sun More digging tonight and i'm not sure why this happens but on the new core with interlaced on the CSYNC out is seeing some odd step change in the sync sequence. These pulses typically represent the hsync E.g. there are three lines that are a part of the VSYNC here, but something seems a bit off, a real N64 has a duration of 185uS and has 5 distinct pulses which should be the 5 lines for vsync.
Nothing stands out here for me at the moment, so I have to do a bit more digging
@modern sleet thanks again for all the work you do on analog output!
My crt is so ready .
So is mine
Awee 😂
Kids were too scared
At least 1 was
Even Simon Belmont would be spooked
I didn't get any children either, but I have only been home for two hours and there's snow everywhere
Snow 🙂 no snow here it’s hot
We got snow here to
Did you go throw on a mask and go trick or treating for that mountain of candy?
Nah but my kids did , I just went along
That's the way to do it. How many pillow cases?
Trick or treaters gone wild. trick or treating done wrong. Stealing Halloween Candy 2019. parents steal halloween candy taking the whole bowl of candy on Halloween.
I handed out copies of Superman 64 for Halloween
The trick master
I bet they tasted buggy
Guys have you heard about the sequel to Mario 74 called Shotgun Mario’s
oh man what a doozie!!
Worse than poison.
That's a box filled with Brian 64s isn't it?
only Robby knows for sure
Diabolical.
Robby is notorious for his collection of Conker’s Good Fur Day.
Why is @cold pollen god tier at ai images
@wanton sun Might be even a simpler solution, I do notice the hblank on interlaced games gets cut off, but I'm not sre if that has any affect on the odd pulse on the scope. It could be something related but its hard to tell without diving into the new vsync / hblank logic
This probably screws up the HSync throwing the beginning of the frame off
and there is so much going on with Hblank right now in the Async module, ill see if anything pops out for you before I start diving into it 😄
@zinc dew were you a developer for WWF No Mercy? Why are you in this game?
haha that ass shot before "TOO COOL"
Can confirm Dodri mode also works in stadium 1 PAL 😅
i can take a look why the hsync is shorter. But i'm not sure what you mean with hblank logic...i thought it's not needed for analog out? i use it to shape the image for hdmi/scaler
after looking into i see it now: hblank is shorter, but hsync is not. What is hblank used for in analog out?
I believe it’s the blanking out of the beam while it goes back to the other side of the screen to draw the next line.
vblank/hblank is used by the scaler to tell it there is no pixel in this area, but vga out has no blanks, only syncs
so i currently don't see why the shorter blank could influence the CRT image
the scaler on the other hand will not care, hblank and vblank is or-combined to one signal anyway
blank period it's union of front porch, back porch and sync pulse
beam goes back only in sync pulse
different horizontal front or back porches can move image left or right
that's also my understanding, so i assume the sync is too short or at the wrong spot, but MikeS already measure the length to be right
Hblank isn't used but the absence of RGB is
blanking it's always at 0v (so black)
at the point near vsync, color is always black
capture of odd/even frame
looking at it, it seems strange that vsync is same length for both, but makes sense, but frames end after 525 half lines
so they behave the same, but i guess they should not
I think field does not affect to sync pulses, so odd/even frame it should be the same
Stupid question but
hpos = videoout_settings.VI_H_SYNC_LENGTH or hpos = videoout_settings.VI_H_SYNC_LENGTH(11 downto 1))
Wouldn't this trigger 3 times in a line?
why? it triggers midline and end of line
Wouldn't it trigger twice in a midline?
why? e.g. hpos goes from 0 to 3000 and length is 3000, then length(11 downto 1) is 1500, so it triggers when hpos is 1500
Oh right, division by two is only by one side haha
it's always possible i have some mistake in there, so good to double check 🙂
Hi there!
I've save files from N64 Everdrive with .sra and .eep extension; how can I convert theme in .sav format I can use in MiSTer core?
This will probably not work but have you tried renaming them to .sav and with the same game name?
Uhm no, I can try...
Checked the save file converter site and nothing yet for N64 - https://savefileconverter.com/#/mister
Converts save files for retro consoles: MiSTer, GameShark (sps and gsv), PS1, N64, DexDrive, Action Replay, Retron 5, Wii Virtual Console, Sega CD, Nintendo Switch Online, emulators, and various flash cartridge formats. Decrypts PSP saves. Provides help for downloading save files, erasing cartridge saves, and copying saves to and from original h...
I've tried with a simple rename but the game it doesn't get the save at all...
yah sorry, that was the only thing I could think of
the core is just using the raw data for eeprom/sram/flash, so if you find out the format of the everdrive file, you can probably extract it
.sra sounds like sram, .eep like eeprom
Hallo Robert, thanks! And how can I find the format used in the ed64 everdrive?
ah ok
but i assume they are not just 32 kbyte for .sra and 0,5 /2kbyte for .eep?
let me see
the sram file is endian swapped
oot, you need something the swap the endianess
someone posted a script here a while ago to do that, in case you are on linux
fantastic, I'll try it now!
Ooh! Proper analog out! Keep up the great work!
Is your rom named the same thing?
There's nothing in the file but the header and a bunch of AA's.
yes @compact skiff I see, I think that the swapping is not right
yes
The header matches what I have in my save though, so at least we know that part of the convertion is working.
ok guys my bad
the conversion was correct but the original .sra file was not correct one... it seems I've played oot in USA versione not EU, on my original N64 with evedrive!
I've tried the USA .sra -> .sav byte swapping and it works! Thanks @wanton sun ! I'm wondering if I can use the Usa .save with Pal version of the game in the core...
Ok it seems I can, only... the name is "corrupted", but the game starts in PAL with the saved progress in NTSC
Spooky
ok, found this... https://github.com/xoascf/ZeldaSaveTool
What was unproper about it before? I've only used crt and it mostly looks what I imagine original hardware looked
Especially with that interlace fix
I think it was essentially hard coded video modes
Sorry I'm dumb, you mean the output varies from game to game and it didn't show before?
in theory it could, however it seems all games use the same. Basically 4 variants: NTSC/PAL and 240p/480i
the viewport inside that might be different however, e.g. some games use less height
I didn't know this save conversion web tool was so comprehensive, that's really impressive. Who is behind it? Might be worth letting them know about the N64 core if they are interested in supporting converting N64 save files.
I see, I guess that variance wasn't there before then but the picture itself has not bothered me. I think I even recall weird black borders on original hardware from when I played it back in the day, on certain titles at least
the main issue with the old video out was the wrong speed. It was 60.1hz but should be 59.8
Yeah by proper I mean true to hardware. A few put a lot of effort into getting the previous method looking good
and it seemed to have problems for some crts
with the current solution we can have it behave exactly like the real n64
I understand, that's why you're matching waveforms I guess
Don't know if you saw earlier Robert, but any notes I and someone else had on a slight image shift also needed to be confirmed. Mike was going to have a look. Might well not need any adjustments on that front either
I was probably just seeing the SCART shift of MiSTer, unlike my composite connected N64
it's probably not 100% right yet, i would assume the centering needs to shift slightly and interlace also fixed, but well, it's a first try. I'm glad hdmi out is already working well and analog out is showing not too far off
It's really great for improved stability already. But yeah, only to say disregard my own offset report unless I can make a like for like comparison 🤣 I'm sure others have the means
Yeah the offset is really not an issue, it might be oy very lightly off a real n64
As for hblank, it's only purpose is to fill in extra time for the CRT to be timing correctly with the set pixel clock
Also is the happy spot for the colorburst signal and obviously where the Hsync is set
I still need to see if how vpos_half is set may be causing the issue
But first I just want to see why there is a long pulse during the vsync as well as it being 30uS longer than a real 64 as well as the old core
how do you measure this stuff? like a fancy oscilloscope?
From observation a real n64 is 185 uS, the old core 190uS, the new core is around 220uS
Ill do more digging after work tonight
what is 185us? vsync?
Just vsync yeah
The old sync was closer to that right now it seems like it's around 220 but there is long pulse that shows up, I've not found out why
very strange, as it should not be 220us, i cannot see why the simulation would be wrong
It's like the Hsync starts way too soon
For the first frame
Don't mind the colorburst signals, you can ignore them
the length is 3 lines: 3094 clock cycles per line, 48.68mhz = 20.542ns * 3 * 3094 = 190.670 us
The step increases are the start of a new line eg it's the Hsync
i could imagine hsync and vsync being not aligned right to each other
yes, that's what it should look like
i currently don't see why 480i looks different
but sorry, don't want to disturb your work, take your time!
Yeah more signal tapping later haha
if i can do anything, just tell me
Things are looking really good on my CRT on the current version. So exciting
Yes
Oooh, nude mister. Naughty.
nude tayne
Are you sure?
Mike tests on SVideo even while he probably shouldn't hahaha
Could you kick up the 4d3d3d3?
about the "save files matter", I've found a Python byte swapper for N64 files: https://github.com/ssokolow/saveswap
When did audio start working in Portal 64?
ok @wanton sun and @zinc dew so if anyone is interested with this tool you can also correctly edit the names in Zelda saves! - > https://github.com/jgazeley/zelda64
That’s awesome!
I don't have the exact date, but I was able to find this:

At least a month ago
This is nsfw lol like subliminal messaging in The Little Mermaid
What about converting a Majora's Mask save for ED .sav>.fla and vice versa
awbacon mentioned when it happened in one of his n64 update videos
Referring back to the scope screenshots back there, THIS is why I love the MiSTer project: dedication and the strive for accuracy! You devs rock!
Anyone on CRT here prefer the look of N64 on Composite vs Svideo?
I dunno why, but the sharper SVideo make some of the ugliness of the N64 more apparent to me. The blurrier composite just makes the N64 look right to me
Composite is just vaseline on top of vaseline
I smear vaseline over my CRT
Composite is additional anti-aliasing...
Jk that sounds insane
This guy retro games
I also will only game over RF
The entirety of my real N64 console experience took place on two different 27" Sony Trinitrons via S-Video over the years, so that is how I will always fondly remember it looking.
I needed svideo because that smearing to the right of similar colors was just way too excessive and was constantly fighting those muddy brown colors. Comb filters weren't that great on a 1989 era TV.
Dark caves were unplayable and I think I logged all of 50 seconds of Doom before hitting the nope button.
I played my N64 via s-video for its entire run, since I just used my old SNES s-video cable that I already had at the time. It was nice when Nintendo used the same format for their cables for 3 generations in a row!
I couldn't imagine what N64 would look like over composite video.
Like I remember it lol … I didn’t know squat about the differences between video options
It all looked amazing to me at the time
I feel like a new build is currently being compiled ..
Instead of searching for razors in candies, parents spent all night looking for superman 64 carts
RF
Composite
between how soft the n64 is in general, and how excellent its composite actually is, it hardly makes any difference at all
its weird.
svideo and rgb are only very marginal upgrades
At least they don't have dot crawl and color bleed
I tried S-Video on MiSTer for some of the other cores and the video was super clean, much better than I recall the original hardware. Not sure how much of that is MiSTer magic and how much was that I was using pro grade cables and connectors.
RGB with most of the VI features disabled was pretty good on original hardware but now we can disable dither which is amazing
Either way it isn't too far off from RGB that way.
Madness! Chaos! It's raining cats and dogs!
RF sent over the air and retrieved by an antenna I hope
Nope, N64 had a factory RF adapter:
Nightmare material
I got one of 'em 😛
my local game shop has a bin of them, $1 each 🙂
Please tell me if there are projects on the network for pro micro for n64 controller
I blame @zinc dew
Or can anyone tell me the pinout of the snac adapter for n64?
These are the Saffun brand (only available in a 2pack on Amazon. ca but you can get individuals on amazon. com). They reportedly work great with a clamped controls available in the unstable build. There are cheaper knock-offs (knock offs of knock offs, how far we've come...) as well.
anyone inputlag test them?
I believe they are lower latency than nso controllers
I have the NSO controller and its good but clearly sloshy on the input lag
smh I feel like I paid too much for this stupid thing haha
But the stick doesn't reach the 8 way gate so you don't get the click
Robby breaks down the pros & cons here: #1096015979055697940 message
hold up can they be used wired?
I don't believe that was mentioned, at least I hadn't seen it anywhere
https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Controller-iNNEXT-Joystick-Raspberry/dp/B07449HLKJ so its not this one then?
Customers Frequently Asked Questions: Q: 1. What can of application do I need to download to use this controller? A: No application needed. Plug it in and your PC or Respberry Pi will recognize it. Q: 2. Work with steam games on pc? A: No, not support steam games. Q: 3. Will this work for Tesla A...
I haven’t tried but it’s extremely low latency and comes with the 2.4ghz usb receiver so no point.
batteris?
or is it some internal thing?
Says it is in the product description
no I mean the one I just linked
Ah yes, they do make a wired version, not sure anyones tested it here
let me rephrase
With knock-off products it’s tough to say if it’s the same brand
- has any one played with the wired version I linked above
true
I don’t have SAFFUN for example but it’s a SAFFUN controller
the thing with all these brands I worry about is longevity the most
It’s $20
thats why I went with the uber expensive NSO
but yeah the latency is kinda sus on it
I have both
that can be said of the origial N64 controller as well (well, at least the joystick, if you owned any of the mario party titles)
also how is the dpad on the saffun?
about the same?
unfortunately very important for me as I intend to do sin & punishment soon
and I'll end up with a jump if the diagonals are sus
I haven’t spent much time with it honestly but it seemed fine
yeah I gotcha
thanks all!
I might grab the wired version and goof with it, for shits
as long as its not complete dogshit which it doesnt seem to be
If you live in the US I’m sure you can return it if you’re not happy
Then I can buy it at the "boxes" outlet store 🙂
The wired model is slower
Sorry, I meant to publish all of my findings but want to do it in context and don't have enough time
Maybe I can get something put together
yeah unfortuantely thats why I get shit from amazon
because its so easy to return
oh fascinating
lol nintendo controllers have to follow the new switch standards
wired slower, wireless faster
fuckin insane makes no sense
I think I might just go OG controller at this point... and maybe get a fancy mod
(Shameless promotion inbound)
Reflex Adapt has the fastest response of any measured USB N64 controller or USB adapter
https://steelsticks64.com/products/ this is the fancy shit right
link?
Yes, I can vouch for that. It’s the best for OG controllers.
For N64, IMO the controller hierarchy of the ones I own:
Wired:
If you have good originals - Snax64 then you can use all the OEM gear, transfer pacs, rumble, etc
If you have good originals and don't want to mess with SNAX - Reflex + N64 adapter (and you can get the other adapters and have the ultimate OEM controller collection)
For Wireless:
Saffun
NSO (it keeps disconnecting otherwise would be a good bet)
I love how everyone has these tier lists
and I use NSO wired
and no one on Mister discord likes wired
I do!
I dont know why, I'm hardcore wired
lets go chop
my homie
my kin
https://steelsticks64.com/products/ so this is what I want right?
SNAX64 and Reflex Adapt hopefully due later this month
I have kids and pets so wired is tough for me.
I have one of those but I dont play n64 on my tv is the thing
I do retro gaming on 27 inch pc monitors
Ah nice
the Tv is for the ps5 and all that 4k hdr shit
Introducing Reflex Adapt: a revolutionary gaming device with the power to provide ultimate control. With minimal latency, input response times are improved, empowering gamers to respond faster to unpredictable changes and take on even the most dynamic gaming challenges. Experience gaming with a responsiveness never see
Arm wrestling with the PCB factory right now but still hoping for end of month
Reflex adapt has 0.0007 to 0.003 seconds of latency.
Don't mean to clog up the channel
And being updateable the Reflex keeps getting better everytime I use it.
this is sick
And will soon have Switch and Xinput support
There are adapters for nearly all controllers
It's a way of standardizing data pins, power, and ground
DONGLE with a bunch of em?
PSX SNAC ADAPTER REQUIRES SNAX. PSX BLISS ADAPTERS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH SNAX. PC-Engine adapters are now in stock! Note that 6 button pads are not supported and Turbo doesn’t work 100% like the original console due to the fast response time required by the original hardware. If either of those are requirements you’l
Yeah
Nice thing is they also work with SNAX and SNAC, so you can use the dongles with either
so far I have not had to use this stuff because all my stuff has worked wired, until this core... :
AND who else makes an adapter to use a Virtual Boy controller?
now this core comes along and fucks my whole vibe
I know exactly what you mean. I thought that was so cool to be able to use the same SNES S-Video A/V cable on the N64. That was one of the easiest new console hookups I had ever experienced.
@graceful radish so uh - when you gonna get more of the fancy things in?
or rather, do I need official channels to sign up for the next batch lol
if it helps I'm a repeat customer 😛
got this but just mean for orders
Adapts are overdue but I'm hoping for the end of the month
Factory is struggling a bit
More info on my server if you want it
sign up for the email notifications on the product page
just tryna weigh my options to have it all setup like my other cores - "official-ish" controller
arguably the core with the most important controller for the right feel, and the one that seems to be the most complicated
smh
https://steelsticks64.com/products/ anyone do the steel bowl shit?
N64 controller is a masterpiece that's hard to replicate
yeah ive seen the cad drawings its willld
People use steelsticks and other aftermarket parts
@graceful radish guy makes a few shit products for the mister and he thinks he can just come in here and peddle his snake oil
Be gone man who sells only promises but delivers despair
.....real talk, love Misteradd-on products ... just being a jerk for a laugh...
Haha I'm trying not to push my stuff too much
Honestly I chrck uour site like 1ce a week to see what's new
I'm working on email marketing since the product releases are sometimes fast, and othertimes really delayed
Mostly when I'm bored and 💩'n
Oh, nice! I've always dreamed of my site filling that role
@woeful beacon if you want to get straight to it, SNAX with an N64 adapter gets you in the game today
SNAX64 just adds support for players 3 and 4
wont need that because I got no friends, I signed up mail wise for the reflex cuz it looks neat 🙂
looks flexible
I like that
Oooo emails... can be rough...I never check my email unless I know something is coming..like an order status or something
Best marketing fir ne is youtube personalities
Ive also got NSO controller that might work just fine, like for the casual N64 gaming that I'll be doing
at some point gotta consider how much I'll be actually playing, and then go from there
but the Reflex seems useful beyond that
I'd say hit up retro rgb, vge and cherry ninja and have some loose agreement for buying at cost for review or something
Yeah but my customer base is pretty wide and I'm not reaching them through Twitter alone. Happy to work with Youtubers!
prob smart and also I would say go to digital foundry
they have been doing lots of retro stuff recently
they're cool people
one day n64 enthusiasts will go the delorean route and buy their own factory just to produce OEM N64 controllers
because of stuff like mister tbh
I mean retro gaming is so alive and well
and people in their 30s and 40s have money
it'll happen
in some way
I looked into it but there's a lot to get wrong and the Saffun controller is PRETTY good.
My main gripe is that the joystick gate is a little different than OEM
@graceful radish what I dont understand is
why the input lag
like isnt that just a pcb problem?
that is so odd to me
because I figured PCBs and Lag has already been solved
but I know the joystick is funky with their sensors
Which one are we talking about?
for example the Saffun wired or NSO wired vs the Saffun wireless
why would the latter be so much less laggy
NSO wired I get because of nintendo's bullshit these days
I haven't found a controller company that really cares about latency
That's one reason I started the Reflex product line
Porkchop certified low latency accessories
it seems like retrobit wired always seemed very low, and the 8bitdo gbros is very low
of course the m30 is extremely low as well
so far, ive beeen in an awesome place as far as input lag
brook obvously cares with the UFB
Most companies have at least 1 low latency product
But it seems like a fluke since their others aren't
8bitdo doesn't use the same microcontrollers for each controller
I think it's outsourced
interesting
Don't know if anyone else chimed in, but I purchased this one before getting the wireless one and I ended up returning it. Everything was fine except for the analog stick. The range was jacked. It maxes out at around half tilt, even with the mister main fix.
luckily the gbros, m30 and then the 8bitdo saturn mod kit are all low as hell latency
lol whack
I'm also pretty much done with my Saturn replacement PCB
Started with my SNES PCB and it's super cool
0.8ms of latency
neat - the issue is not with the pcb on saturn front imo, its just replacement rubbers
everyones dpad rubber will go at some point
no one can manufacture good dpad rubbers
it seems
Working on that too
yeah thats big
Waiting on samples for SNES rubbers
I mean im sure your pcb is better than 8bitdo modkit but thats splitting hairs
their modkit is good
0.8ms vs like 5ms or whatever is not relevant for anyone really
but the rubbers... oof
thats why my saturn controllers are going to hell one by one
do your PCBs have multiple modes @graceful radish ? or just the one mode?
for example I use the 8bitdo mod saturn on my switch as well
Mine use GP2040-CE firmware
Which works with Dinput, Xinput, Switch, and PS3
PS4 if you upload your keys
PS5 if I shoehorn an authentication dongle port
dude
if you get ps5
you'd be fuckin king
there are zero good dpads for the ps4 and ps5
zero
@cerulean elk , @fallen sparrow .... help porkchop spread his word of well made goods ....
Although I feel if uou are a mister owner. You know Mraddons, I think the problem is you can get some Chinese products for cheaper..but there is a very very noticeable difference
My buddy..I went through 2 ram sticks and 2 didigtla io boards to get his running..due to just poor quality
complete blank market
Poop... getting back to work
Word... if I kept up with my yt channel..I'd help you too....but after 5 videos someone picked me up to help with commercials and product overviews....
Quicker money just working with a company then building a channel lol
Wow, awesome!
Misteraddons is the official sponsor of the Saturday news show.
Great guy, great products.
Thanks!
Nice
Omg can't wait to get a mister to play Oot and MM
More Porkchop stuff showing up on the channel for November
And some Kurt Russell references to go along with it
I’ve got a reflex vid ready to release as soon as Porkchop does his restock so people can get hyped and pay him $$ same day lol
yeah release it too early and all you'll get is
OH ITS ANOTHER ANALOGE POCKETE SITUATION IS IT
COOL DEVICE WITH NO STOCK HUH
and then thats it
misteraddons dies
n654
Hey, quick question on this. Do you know if TransferPak will be supported with Reflex? I've literally got your SNAC/SNAX stuff in my cart, but I'm considering double dipping.
Love your site, by the way, it's the only place I've ever gone to for my MiSTer accessories.
Lol. I want to sell Porkchop out of Adapts day 1
Yeah I ordered 2x stock for this batch of Reflex Adapt and will put an order in soon for another batch that’s even bigger. Demand is really hard to anticipate especially when YouTube coverage can make or break it 🙂
And then make him admit Escape from NY is superior to Big Trouble (both are amazing. But one is better 🤣)
I know that Raph-net does this but I don’t have any plans for the same functionality on Reflex. SNAX is your best bet. Sorry.
Wait, hold on there
No worries. SNAX it is. 🙂
🤣
Oh sorry, didn't mean to derail the discussion of best Kurt Russell movie. I'm sure you all have been talking about The Thing, right?
His second best movie after Escape from NY
(Me if anyone says Escape isn’t number 1)
Haha
i think just as importantly robert doesn't have any plans to support that either
Yeah good point
5 min to more N64 shenanigans
A permanent fixture
Don't make it more difficult for me to get one!!
lol, just commented on this in the video.
The crazy thing is that well likely have a new build in the morning
Mobile MiSTer. Showing it to my father in law (an engineer who worked on the Apollo missions)
I'd never show such a mess of cables to my FIL
If he worked on that I guess he may have been familiar with fpga's. My dad worked at Lockheed and worked with fpga's as well so he really found the MiSTer cool.
You're telling me we could be playing the n64 on an icbm? 🤔
i asked in the help channel but i had no answer so imma ask here :/
i have a problem ...
i just setted up the n64 core ... but when i load a game : black screen 0 FPS and no error code :/
Why were they wasting time with the Apollo program and aircraft and not making fpga nes
Have you tried going through the pins in this channel?
Which game did you try?
then i used the diddy kong racing rom ..
and then nothing
i tried patched SM64
nothing*
tried banjo kazooie
nothing
tried diddy kong racing .... nothing :/
those are the 3 i tried for now
Do you get any kind of error messages?
nah :/
i have things to stream my mister if needed ... could i hop on call with ya ? @fair stump
Unfortunately I can't right now. But double check you have the latest mister main, latest test build, and the N64-database file. that's all that you need
yeah i'll check that
that's the latest main
N64 v231029
What connections you using? Neat-
that's the latest core
That's such a minimal setup for MiSTer video production
Love it
and for the N64-database idk ... downloaded it today with the update all
elgato capture card into PC ^^
i do .... took them from the vampier link :/
and they're renamed correctly, i assume
You get other cores working?
yeah ...
ntsc as boot.rom and pal as boot1.rom
i got gba to run
but not really a "hungry"core ^^
gonna try snes real quick
this is a brand new (and first) mister fpga for me ...
diving into n64 right away might not have been the best idea
ok snes does not run either
maybe a sram prob then ...
You assembled it yourself?
yep
You have the update all script?
yes
You have sdram?
You have the same elgato as me which means everytime it changes video mode you probably have to reset OBS amiritie or not
Oh looks like you're using the 4kapp it came with, maybe that's better about it lol
Just pin this 😭😝
GJ WP to you ...
i have the digital board ...
plugged ram on slot 2 ...
it works now.
Glad it worked, yea it sounded like something with the assembly
@lone pewter awesome, congrats. Welcome to the community! MiSTer is pretty awesome
i mean yeah ...
Yeah I was gonna recommend the memtest next
i've been waiting too much to try mister ...
Now you get to party 🥳
yeah 🙂
thx a lot guys 🙂
time to discover the library i was too young to discover now xD
Yes he was well aware of what an FPGA does. He’d just never seen it used for “fun”
Start with MSX and work your way forward, haha
Travel setup. Not my studio.
yeah ... when i tested the snes core ... i remembered the gba core does not need sdram ....
Yeah, just sayin' I dig the minimal travel setup
Today’s video was made “out of office”
and then it clicked XD
That was me but for the psx tbh but there are many games for both consoles I haven't played yet, good thing there's both 😏
Showed him some N64, some Saturn but mostly the vintage PC side of things
I like starting up some of the old computer cores and just play something awful I can't understand
You know I showed him Matrimelee 🤣
He knows full well of my love of Neo Geo
lmao
ok ... this is just too great.
He loved it. Probably gonna build one for fun. Wants to get some vintage PCs running
yeah it blew my dad's mind too haha
I offered to mail him one of mine but he wants to do a full parts build
i'm literally diying right now.
playing my childhood game .... T_T
is there any integer scaling param on N64 ?
are you actually dying in-game? for shame
all i can find is "Aspect ratio" original
integer scaling isn't really something that can be done without an emulator. that requires more processing power that the original hardware doesn't have
You can however use filters 😉
now boot up Cho Aniki lol
Remember that the MiSTer is running original hardware technically. Most things have to be within the confines of what would be possible with real hardware
i mean ... on gba for exemple you can setup the thing to be either "fill the screen" or "use original scaling"
Oh you mean getting a proper integer scale. My mistake
yeah
Considering the N64 core is still a WIP, expect some things to not be perfect yet
I mean, video output settings are generally handled by the MiSTer.ini
Hahaha should have. I didn’t have a ton installed on the SD card. It’s mostly my Saturn and N64 test MiSTer. It came along for the ride and I did todays video out of my studio
Vscale_mode=1 in the ini maybe?
yeah XD
turn off the filters
In the osd try flipping all the VI options off and see what you think
yes this ^
turn all that shit off first
then maybe do textures and AA and then go from there
see we're not used to N64 emulation looking like the real thing any more
because N64 emulation has been such total dogshit at actually looking like an N64 and rather just upscales everything
yeah ...
time to get back to real ^^
right exactly
its a bit of an adjustment
pixel art and ps1 just behaves quite different than the N64
do what I do... blame nintendo for every problem in your life 😛
ok it's the antialias that blurs the shit out of it XD
yeah xD good idea xD
not for me tbh
the anti aliasing actually helps with the edges and textures
its the bilinear filtering that for me does too much smearing
but then its also game to game
some games benefit, some games dont
isnt it grand lol
true too
this goes back to the whole sonic waterfall bullshit
can't have it all, just gotta pick a lane
lol @orchid nimbus
anyway ... gonna go bed now ...
almost midnight here in france ^^
thx a LOT guys. could not be happier rn ^^
thank god i'm not named robert XD
but i have a name that is Horrid to pronounce for english speakers xD
Beat his ass on some street fighter
Bonne nuit à toi aussi 🙂
Haha he’s more of a tinkerer and less of a game player
But he wants to get the computer cores running for fun. He has half the damn computers in his garage too. He’s like me…except in his 70s
(Probably why we get along so well)
That's fucking wholesome as fuck and please interview him for the channel
Sorry I mean
Please fucking interview him for the fucking channel
Haha that’s better @woeful beacon maybe I will one day
Dude worked on Apollo cameras, engineered pipelines for Exxon in Libya…all sorts of interesting shit
uhhhhhhh
microphone stat haha
Wish I had more people to show off the MiSTer to. My brother-in-law is basically the only person I show it to that finds it interesting. Looking forward to showing him the progress on the N64 core since the last time he saw it like a month ago.
I've achieved two things sharing the MiSTer with friends. A friend just bought his from RetroCastle. And I learned to hate Street Cop on NES. (As my friend gets to laugh watching me on the mat)
the computer cores are what interested my dad as well, I grew up with zx spectrum and atari st, so showing those to my father was awesome.
no idea what this means
NSO controller wired
seems good tho
honestly not having much issues with this controller, input lag doesnt really matter much for the games im playing
but im no competitive n64 gamer, and I dont plan on fighting mike tyson on NES using this controller so 😛 there we have it lol
oh well - not a big deal
wear and tear on the original hardware
this is a brand new NSO controller
oh
but yeah doesnt bother me
well.... don't worry about it
noted haha
retry again and push harder
It means that your controller is working perfectly.
I love this fucking core
I dont know if the menus in this game are right but fuck it
gameplay is sick
thanks
me: wheres that fucking school bus piece of shit I need to blow it up now
my wife: ....
divorce papers rustling
Oh yeah! With COPIOUS hand holding from the dev, finally got the full build of Wolfenstein 3D-64
Seriously nobody else I know gives two shits
the mister is irrelevent, the games are not
like to most people
if you show them something that is from their childhood and hand them the right controller
they'll get it
if you dont, well, the rest is just nerd stuff for the 1% 😛
(like me)
Wow, that's great. You think that knowledge is transferable to the doom version?
Would love that full wolfenstein... 🥹
Very true. It’s just a pile of random boards until you hand someone the game
i know somoene who was constantly playing kaizo SNES stuff, on their nvidia shield in living room playing off of PC (emulator) in the other room. i kept trying to tell them about MiSTer, for sure they'd notice the latency. i even brought it over one time, and they refused to look at it LOOL
i tried. some people really just don't care
Haha I have a friend who loves retro shit. But not hardware. He will play SNES shit all day long on his phone. But hey…if he’s having fun that’s all that matters right? In the end all this hardware is just for people to have fun. So who am I to judge
I mean I love MiSTer because it’s a tinkering dream. I can spend as much time messing with the “way I play” as I do actually playing. And so much of my love of gaming is really just the “setting it up” phase
dm
save states was the big one there also
still sent me for a spin tho LOL
i do love being mister preacher tho LOL
recommending it as much as i can
I just love “the process”. I’ve got 30+ consoles. A dozen handhelds. A dozen retro PCs. Near to 100 arcade boards. MiSTer. Pocket. Steam Deck…and I just love “getting them ready”
Give me a rare arcade board that needs repair and a custom harness and mod to work and I’m a happy man. Then i play it and the thrill is gone 😂
MiSTer with network access
it is fun the constant relationship between tinkering and playing
i guess other hobbies have it too but for me i definitely relate it to making electronic music
or any music, where half the battle is just setting things up, trying different things etc.
it's like teeing things up
last night for example i was playing Magical Hat no Buttobi Turbo! Daibouken English 0.1 with Sega 3 button NSO controller

i love mister LOL
Needs 66 more
I am following along with this project because I like applied discrete math and embedded programming. I couldn't care less about Intel CPUs, APIs or mainstream shooters. It's all about the bits, as in the bit level logic.
And 64 bits is a lot of bits. And a lie. It's only 9 or 18 bits.
what an amazing graph, god damn
makes me so happy to be watching this happen in real time
Make sure to add a marker for when it's Christmas
Which game is perfect
is there a newbie guide for setting up the n64 core?
What do you need help with
Hey friend, thanks for joining the discord and for jumping into the N64 channel. We have a bunch of pins that should help you with what you need but this great FAQ is a good place to start - https://vampier.net/N64
I haven't tested the N64 Core because I was waiting for a usb adapter, which is coming soon, so I was wondering, but I found this https://vampier.net/N64/, and I think is a good place to start!
thanks man!!!
My pleasure. I’m excited for you to check out the core. @stiff condor is an awesome example of the nice people here. We’re happy to help so don’t hesitate to ask! 🍻
none
Also, I LOVE the n64, is one of my favorite consoles ever
Vampier, he meant you're perfect.
Ok thanks, I couldn't tell if there was one by the chart
not yet
brown-nosing doesn't work on me
I don't do it for you,
I dunno, we’re getting close to Christmas. Hope we can hit one playable game.
I was thinking that was some coincidence
dyslectic vampires are tight
I wonder if there's a common issue preventing many playable games from being completable
Whoa whoa whoa Robby! Let's keep our expectations realistic!
People's time and energy 😆
Not perfect maybe but I couldn't probably spot the difference comparing side by side on some titles
Because I'm not a nerd
@zinc dew Halloween is old news, where's your Christmas spirit?
I'm not even sure what would satisfy the perfect score tbh
Even if Robert meant to say Halloween for a deadline, he still beat that
Wheeeee
trees
perfect score for?
Perfect on the core
🦃bitroast🦃
I don't either. I think whoever made the spreadsheet added it there for the hell of it.
I remember on the PSX core, people were doing side by side frame sync tests on games like gran turismo
but that kind of thing didn't happen on every game
for some strange reason, Super Mario 64 is way more completable than Superman 64 ? 🤔 🤔
Super Mario 64 will never be perfect without TLB
Tender Loving Bits
See I heard that TLB was actu-
The Last Build (TM)
The Last Boss!
Every time someone whines about TLB Robert should push back working on it a week
Try Lesserknown Badgames
two
On Xmas he should add the core to update all but it should only run one game
Quest 64
I have Star Fox 64 fully completeable. That'll keep me entertained for a bit
also i have an Ultra HDMI n64
so
Yup and it works great
I have my N64 I got for Christmas in 1997
my childhood one is technically my brothers.. he still has it 😒
I played on xmas morning on a tv that size but it was white
I'm running into an issue with training mode and don't know if it's my setup or not
the weird thing is
i think i actually prefer composite on a CRT than HDMI on my OLED
lol
nostalgia is a hell of a drug
My N64 is from when I was a child, I reshelled it last year though
N64 of Thesius
I go through withdrawal symptoms without it!
i prefer something like N64 core doing big chunky pixels over more modern emulators cranking the resolution. i feel that's kinda similar line of thought maybe?
I've always felt that the 32/64bit generation of console games look better at their native resolutions. I don't mind the PS2/GCN generation rendered in HD though.
oooo i think i draw the line on the generation just after :D
i saw footage of Metal Gear Solid 4 running really nicely and found that really impressive
PS2 still looks weird to me cranked up
MGS4 still at times looks like a modern game
yo DAVE were you familiar with the Doom 64 Complete Edition ?
Native and contemporaneous. CRTs for standard definition and 720p plasmas for PS3/360
yo BITROAST YES MY BROTHA
OR SISTA
I miss my old Panasonic plastma.
top image is Europe Doom 64. bottom is Complete Edition after i ran through the patches.. i can't seem to get the Complete Edition brightness patch to work
i'm just wanting to confirm .. the Complete Edition definitely should work right? i'm stuffing something up in the patching process?
i just want to play Doom 64 and be able to see 😭
no worries if you're not too sure
I'm playing F-Zero for the first time and I've never seen an N64 game run so smooth.
Using the stripped or standard bps?
ROM SHA1 "6FB0CE9C75BBE54B6E1EDE337652B0221E5F2AAD"
?
That's what I've got. Not without their faults but the native resolution of 720p (3x 240p) and 500hz motion clarity make up for it.
i ignored stripped.
i patched doom64.bps to DOOM64.WAD (D041456BEA851C173F65AC6AB3F2EE61BB0B8B53),
and then patched the temp file to Doom 64 (USA) Rev 1 (6FB0CE9C75BBE54B6E1EDE337652B0221E5F2AAD).
and the game boots and has the new levels in the main menu.. and also the options has the toggle for Red/Green Blood
so it seems like the patch worked. it's just the Brightness in particular is still darker than the Europe/Japanese games
I'll have to double check that. What specific problems?
When I try to move it activate the dpad features. Like they are both mapped to the stick.
Ok thanks
Is this on SNAC or other pad?
On 8bitdo n64 mod kit and 8bitdo sn30 pro
I was thinking about getting a SNAC adapter, I've never looked into it
gotta rename the patched doom64 wad to a bps file, and then patch the rev 1 with it. the default brightness should be max
OHH
like just doom64.bps would work ?
yep
It’s at the bottom
"Rename the newly generated file to give it the bps extension"
oh i did that!!
i misread 🤦♂️ haha
it's a nifty form of DRM
i have no idea what im doing wrong lool
because the brightness patch also adds the additional options of being able to toggle blood to red/green
What if you apply the patch without the extra stuff
I wonder if the brightness works then
i'll try that one!
