Looks like the latest build fixed the issues I was seeing in Beetle Adventure Racing. Skybox, blocky tree models and window divider for front and back side windows
Another panda. That makes 3 I think
And I heard pandas were terrible at reproducing lol
~~fuckin ~~pandas
I can only bear so much
pandas were created when 2 bi-polarbears attacked eachother and give eachother black eyes

Did you hear about the panda that was always correcting everyone at the zoo? People said he was way too pandantic ๐
(Joke only works if you know the word im misspelling)
Pedantic
Haha glad someone got it. Wasnโt sure if it would make sense
Admittedly the joke is a reach
It was a bit of a stretch, but...
That's the winner in my book
Alright what sorcery is this? Coins popping out of my man Whomp over here if I dive on his back
That's his life savings
"* This works on N64 hardware, though for the best framerate and graphical effects, play on ParaLLEl"
let's goooooo
let's a-goooo*
noticed a bug remaining with thps2 in latest core. the skate completion hanging out on the right of the screen flashing during gameplay after achieving that level goal
The interesting part to compare with all the racing games is the collisions with other cars
Bitroast actually confirmed that happens on real hardware
Yeah, surprising ๐
Some feel rather seamless and some, like cruisn usa or ridge racer 64, it really feels like they're on rails
@fair stump did you say the issues with V8 1 and 2 are fixed? missing/glitched 2D stuff?
#1096015979055697940 message
Menu still busted but it's all legible and easy to navigate now
It's thps3 but the same happens on 1 so I figure they all do it
Anyone knows if the way beetle racing pops in distant geometry is accurate in the core? It probably is
Someone said V8 was fixed, I briefly checked but didn't confirm it
Missing are all the 2D background images in the V8 menus - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUFHx_D-z_g
Vigilante 8 is a vehicular combat video game developed by Luxoflux and published by Activision for PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color. It is a spin-off of the Interstate '76 series, featuring several of its theme concepts (auto-vigilantes, the 1970s time frame, and specific fictional vehicle companies).
Players do combat over a number ...
thank you thoseposers and Robby
sorry you didn't ping me but I had just played it earlier, lol
Yeah ๐
I was just play OoT and the only thing still looking weird is the black lines in the ward sparkles when you play a warp song
Yeah, there's still a lingering transparency issue that a few games exhibit.
ive noticed that line on the bottom of the spiraling effect when playing any song in oot
It feels like a z buffer issue, right?
That one is also confusing
yeah exactly, seems like something is coming forward that shouldnt be
the spiral effect is actually fixed recently, Walrus
same patch that fixed the fog clouds in WR64
oh nice! i havent played since saturday so not surprising its already been fixed. things move so quickly with this core..
the warp effect from Song of Soaring still looks off in MM
i think that effect happens somewhere in OOT, too?
I wonder if the TLB games are all just going to work when TLB gets implemented
That's my guess
I will be streaming Goemon games till my panda butt falls off when that happens
OOT does still have the triangle missing for a frame when the attract mode zooms into the kokiri forest entrace, but that seems to be the same issue a fair few games have where geometry will blink out for a frame from time to time
when i was doing A/B comparisions yesterday i did notice mister has like, more colour banding? noticed it especially in the fog gradients in the distance as i was walking up and down and the fog effect was going up/down
i dunno if that's that or just a general something
I was leaving Gerudo Valley today on 231025 and I jumped off the elevated fence and was running straight into the field and a large triangle in the ground briefly flashed black
but I don't know if that can be done on OG hardware
Yeah, known issue with MGL at the moment. Games with cart saves are fine but anything that uses a Controller Pak will produce issues. Best to just load games via the core for now.
Also interestingly I noticed that the core can have the type set to either F or S in the SV file = https://github.com/RobertPeip/Mister64/blob/main/N64.sv. I have all my MGL set with S which is to mount the file. I wonder if that's an issue.
Oh I also can't get saves with Transfer Pak to work OR I don't understand the expected behavior
should they load in the GB core?
Knowing nothing about the technical aspects I wonder if it's gonna go something like finish off test sheet issues > tighten all the timings for everything > tlb. Basically done then?
from his last patreon post, that seems to be the course
You have tested so many wrestling games that no shame can come to you.
Right now I want to know what causes SnoCross to poop out. The @weary perch Crash
Can you create wrestlers in the N64 wrestling games?
I think so
i played a bunch of Polaris Snocross today trying to see if i could finish a race like you did panda
no luck ๐
farthest i got was 45 seconds today
one was only 5 seconds ๐ฎ
I get way farther. I usually get to lap 3
how is that game?
i almost never make it to lap 2
it's not great, but i enjoy it
the handling is pretty fun
It is actually decent
The environment in the one stage I play looks nice
not one of n64's finest but not the worst either
I like that you can pop a wheelie and it feels like you go faster
night stages with the lighting look pretty neat
it's near identical to the PS1 version
which does work perfectly on the PSX core, if you want to play it without it crashing on you
that's cool, I'm a big fan of Sled Storm for PS1
Dualshock support?
@weary perch gotta play Sled Storm for the PS1, extremely good
is n64pad in the options just for a controller without save pack or rumble?
i am an absolute sucker for gen 5 racing games ๐
me too, friend!
i don't think i've actually played sled storm yet, i'll give it a try tonight!
whoever in here was talking about GT64
the Japanese version has a bit more content
sadly it doesn't run any better, still hangs out at 15
City Tour GrandPrix: Zen Nihon GT Senshuken is the JP version
the handling is really good, i wish someone could hack that game to make it run at at least 20 FPS consistently ๐
I want to like Beetle Adventure Racing more but it is really stiff
20 / 15 is like the tolerable / 'what is this crap' FPS divide for N64 lol
panda, the early beetles control like butt
and I'm going to check out Polaris SnoCross myself, thanks!
if you can unlock some of the later stuff, it starts handling a lot better
Beetle Adventure Racing has a nice sense of progression.
the police beetle you unlock later on controls really smoothly, but it does take some time to get there
ive seen people not enjoy Beetle coz the tracks are too long, which is totally true and fair LOL
always enjoyed it though. racing through the tracks and finding all the shortcuts
I loved that game, I also really enjoyed the MP
I mostly just don't understand the beetles
its pretty funny having a game with only just 1 type of car
beetle gets by on vibes, nice visuals, huge maps with lots of shortcuts and branching paths. some of the gameplay is kinda tedious because the tracks are super long, it's not the most intense racer, but it is pretty unique and one of the better looking N64 games
Game was made to promote the new beetle cars which were released in 98.
also yeah the multiplayer is pretty great
Never played it before but I feel it's one of the better playing ones for straight racing through real environments, it looks really good
it has pretty good replay value too, trying to find all the boxes and get 100 points on each level
i really liked those bits of exploration in N64 racers
MK64 having peach's castle off to the side was great
then Rush had all the keys, etc.
good memories scouring for that stuff
its also by EA.. if you've ever played those old Need For Speed 2 and 3: Hot Pursuit from mid-90s .. Adventure Racing is more along those lines than other arcadey kinda games i think
I guess, even as a kid I was confused by it, what business does a bunch of small family cars have engaging in street racing ๐ค
it's not street racing, it's adventure racing

Ohh...
I think it is supposed to be silly
n64 also has some weird tie-ins, another theme i love on the console
Wave Race 64 randomly has Fanta ads, Tonic Trouble has Newman's Own popcorn
australia got HSV Adventure Racing instead, i'll happily join in on the beetle slander
and Beetle has Beetles
Wait, there are Fanta ads>?
But which adventure is better? Diddy Kong's or the Beetle's!?
I get it now tbh but that was too advanced for me as a kid, I thought they looked reasonably futuristic enough to have a side gig as road warrior vehicles
Diddy Kong as loathe as I am to admit it
Oh I get that
@languid dune I was absolutely blown away as a kid when I drove around the hub world in Diddy Kong racing and the music shifted notes being played based on location. That was some real future music shit, I loved it.
Say you're Australian without saying you're Australian
Yeah, Rare was great with that. Banjo Koozie is another great example.
They removed the adventure smh
More like Banjo Ka-dookie.
Diddy Kong Racing is awesome
ive tried emulating it and revisiting it a few times.. that awful DS port that came out
N64 in general has a shockingly great library of racing games.
yeah honestly it rivals psx which surprises me
mister core first time it felt right to replay dkr again aha
3d platforming, racing, wrestling, fighting, and board games pretty much covers the bulk of it
psx probably pips it if you prefer simulationy games, but if you prefer arcade/kart/scifi racers n64 is super competitive
Cheers man, thanks for confirming.
it is funny that n64 always gets the "theres less than 5 good games on it" kinda rhetoric alot. i def wonder if emulation has just given the system a bad rep over the years
I think so
it can't of helped yeah
I would put the top 10 N64 games against the top 10 PSX games any day
plus like, when people actually had n64s they couldn't afford more than 5 games
I think quite a few n64 games have a higher-than-average jank factor to them which gives people that 'only a few good games' impression
haha yeah that's true
but for anyone with even the remotest jank tolerance there are some massive gems in the n64 library, honestly
i remember when the n64 came out, it took forever for rental stores here to get n64 games available also
i dunno if that was licensing or just due to the cost ..
yeah
its illegal to rent games in japan apparently ?
not sure! doesn't sound totally unlikely
but yeah i'm also surprised how many neat games are on n64 and i've had one with an everdrive for years ๐
yeah. i'd been meaning to hdmi mod my n64 to get the system in a better place
even with everdrive, i'd have to .. manually press the reset button to go back to the menu
so exploring that library was still a pain LOL
Itโs why I have over 180 games for it
do you have Beetle or HSV Adventure Racing? ๐ค
Ohh yeah, absolutely ๐ป
Beetle Adventure Racing, I only buy NA games and a few imports
how many of those 180 games are quest64
More than 0 and less than 180
64 copies of quest
Yes, if you jump on their back coins pop out.
THPS2 feels so much more daunting than 1 to me.
its an RPG
get those stats up
otherwise, you should be able to go ham, I also always change all the special controls to be not shit
I used to make them all up down
or for grab tricks, left right
damn, you're totally right
that way you'll always (9/10 times) get a sick special when you're doing basic motions
lol 12 year old me was on that good shit
remember also to use the wallride, boneless up to any ledge like 20 feet high haha
Benihana being changed to left from rightis a crime ๐
change that shit back
fix all that trash
down down should be 360 flip, up up 360 shove
all that nonsense
get COMFORTABLE
the hardest thing in the game ( I swear ) is finding ollie the magic fucking bum
(though to be fair he is || magic || )
Checking the trick list, why do they use B
In 1 it's purely the c buttons and that's easy
Why are the controls jumping from A and B all the way to C up and C right?!
C left does mirror the B button
Been playing pokemon crystal clear hard to plug it into stadium 2
Got my party together
Dark and ghost types
you got it working?
Duke Nukem 64 working great
oooo nice
Still no option to disable inversed aiming so mark it as unplayable
Hexen was another one that got improved along with the Doom 64. i almost missed that one
Do megaman legends look like the psx version with vi disabled?
not enough wobbling polygons to confuse the two
wobble wobble
Yea the sharpness is what makes it look better but without the wobbling the n64 version might just have the upper hand ๐ค
If disabling vi looks cool
I think the textures are lower res on N64
I see
The audio is definitely compressed more
The fps in megaman 64 tanks alot compared to legends on ps1 too
You'd think it would have better frame rate compared to ps1 version
When you have to defend city hall, it feels like a slideshow
you checked out SubDrag's control hacks?
Do the Goemon games use TLB? Great Adventure locks up after the Konami logo and Mystical Ninja locks up after the New Game intro
I believe they do
i wonder if Duke Nukem 64 (U) [!] Movement Controls - No Invert_1.04.z64 might work for you
Top Gear Hyperbike texturing fixed but the rider is no longer on the bike in the intro lol
Ghostrider
Hi-res is funky on Top Gear Overdrive and oh my god is this Creed-ass music awful
how do you get the 1p2c stuff working these days? i lost track at some point and now i can't work it out
do you need a special build of main or anything
i don't think you do anymore
1 player 2 controller - like for perfect dark , podracer etc
i think the basic process is like
- leave right stick unmapped
- turn on Dual Controllers (P3 for Racer, otherwise P2)
- make sure 2 pads are enabled
- load/reset the game
right stick will now control P2/P3 analog stick
Ohhh
Oh I didn't know, nice
basically modern controls
yeah i had it working a while back its awesome
sounds like cheating!!
i think R gets mapped to P2 Z? not 100% sure
I have a .mpl for perfect dual stick perfect dark, gonna be so cash to play through it once tlb is there
Oh and megaman is nothing like the psx version with vi turned off, still inferior tbh
Psx dialogue boxes are just so much crispier and nice
You can play perfect dark right now with the tlb removal patch
Yea but it stuffs up at mission 7 or something because of it right?
Yea unfortunately
I keep replaying the first mission just to bask in how good it controls
What about those dialogue boxes tho, why do that look better in psx? I assume they mix in higher res stuff for 2d overlays or something
i only got around to trying 1P2C with Shotgun Mario 64, which has the right stick as aim asif it's a third person shooter loool
It Just Works!
Legit question, I wonder if you could just map them inversely, would make navigating the menus and nightmare.
I tried but no luck with dual stick
I guess if you make right stick c buttons but then you lose the analog
Where did you find this one?
got it working thanks !
Is using the switch n64 controller a working thing? I saw the post from August about adding the .map file, but I still cant get the analog stick to work corrrectly
did you add the new zimage? #unstable-nightlies message
Yea it works great with the updated driver
updated driver is in the new build? Mine is prob 1 or 2 weeks old
Wow that's old lol
it's still in unstable so you can't get it via update_all I don't think
I think you're right
Itโs all in the pinned threads
yea thats my bad I should have updated before asking questions ๐
i modified my downloader script so I think it will come in thru update all
Thanks everyone, will download now
i'm not entirely sure if that linked zimage in the pins is included in the update
Oh I misunderstood, the zimage is an unstable build of the entire mister, I thought it was just a link to the latest core
Try this
just play the PSX versions lol
Hi, there a script ou way to convert GBC save on Mister to N64 Transfer pak?
Same issue, I think at this point the problem may be iwht how its mapped in mister outside of the core, going to play around with it, thank you for the file and help
Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong but transfer pak is such a recent feature I don't believe anyone has put a script like that together yet
No TLB Till Brooklyn
Last one basically gets Hsync closer to the 4.7us length, but originally it was under 2us.. its still not exact but it shouldnt cause problems either
the Analog joystick in the N64 core is automatically mapped to the controller left joystick. so you might have to map that first using Define Joystick buttons
That could very well be my issue, thank you
Oh that core wasn't for you haha
I love it when they use some stupid shit for a grind move instead of like ... the fuckin grind button...
I always set the manual specials to triangle as well, so you dont accidentally get a fuckin benihana an inch off the ground
12 year old me was NOT having it
tony hawk 1 seems much easier on n64 vs psx
@fair stump you want to see something cool, pick casper to 360 flip special (manual special) and then let it come to a stop, and you'll see "freestylin" ๐
With how finicky wall grinding the school bells and ollying these fire hydrants, my subjective opinion is that THPS 1 is objectively better
hahahaha nahhh
you just gotta learn the tech
but yeah its finnicky
for damn sure
but I still like 2 way better than 1 ๐
cuz it has FREESTYLIN tho
and also Spiderman
(I dunno if the n64 version did, but my version growing up did)
what fuckin game did I just link a gif of
thats the remake right?
spiderman was in tony 1?
1 had officer dick
Yeah why does it look like that ๐
this is that xbox shit
I never played this one
im not really feelin the anti aliasing
thats gettin deleted
https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/948/839/7f0.gif now we're talkin
wait am I not allowed to GIF here anyways
shhhh

SHIT ITS THE FUZZ

For real though, with how many objectives each level has there's no way to do them all in one run, right? Or does that just come with experience?
I'm pretty sure a solid thps run could complete all objectives in one go

I'm sure someone can do them all at once but I think most players do one or two each run
People are too good at video games
hope everyone is having a wonderful day ๐
Thanks, man. You too. ๐ป
Nothing quite as sad watching someome doing the 1000000 points challenge you've struggled with for a day blow past it times ten, chaining every trick together
It's all about the manualing
When i load every rom I get
Auto-detect failed:
ROM missing from database,
you might not be able to save
I used these roms for a long time in an everdrive. Should i just get new roms?
you need to get the n64 database.txt
@last quest thereโs a pin that gives you a link for a script to use that will download the latest version of this core and the N64 database file which you need
Damnit beaten again lmao
thank you both anyways
Itโs not a script, itโs a line you add to downloader.ini - #1096015979055697940 message
haha, sorry for hijacking
No no please hijack away
we want to make sure everyone is able to enjoy this amazing core
please take your apologies to #general-banter
I wanted to ask a silly question: I don't know much of anything about the Nintendo64, and I noticed I have a couple games failing to save. I am guessing this is just the status of WIP and some save types aren't supported, and no need to report that?
All save types should work. The n64 database file informs the core what kind of save rom the cart has and if it needs the controller pak.
remember that the only way to make sure it saves is to open the core menu
Itโs not a silly question at all. Without understanding the whys and hows of save behavior itโs all very obtuse.
both the games report broken saves on start actually. I checked one online and in the database, it is marked as 32K, and I only found a reference online to some site I don't quite know that listed "sram256" as the save type on the cartridge
they save, but the saves are reported broken on further start.
Wipe your saves/n64 folder and try again after adding the n64 database file
Also what games?
One is Fuurai no Shiren 2, which likes the snes one, is an heavy sram saving game saving every single move XD
Oh that might be an issue.
Yeah, Shiren 2 doesn't save on the core still.
I don't think there's any way for the rumble version of Wave Race to save properly either due to a bug with the game/core.
why canโt you play like banjo Kazooie
haha
That works!
Yeah real short explanation, Wave Race Shindou does this weird slow check on the save type. Something along those lines. Itโs very unique and the core doesnโt account for that yet.
Oh it's only dependant on that version. those freak cartridges!
Yeah itโs so odd haha
Banjo Kazooie is the one game ive beaten on the mister already ๐
The rendering in this core is incredible. It does justice to the strange unique blurry picture of the system
anyway thank you again for the help. Take care good people ^-^/
Shun this lubed up man
So far I've only beaten Rayman 2
I finished superman 64 on the core so no one else ever has to
We are so very proud of you!
I remember playing it as a kid and thinking man I suck
deleting the ROM now...
Playing it as an adult, nah it's the game
The saw it at friends house once I was oh cool superman 64, that sounds fun
He's like nah, it sucks we're not playing it
Someone get this man the Super Secret TLB core
I'm sorry that happened to you. But delighted that none of us need to be subjected to it!
Was funny seeing so many parents bringing their kids back to the stores to try to return the carts for a full refund back then... or at the very least, an exchange.
Verbatim what my friend said to me. I insisted and he groaned
It was that bad
it can't be that bad
Oh it's that bad lol
It's worse
its famously one of the worst games of all time
There's always that one guy who says "it's not that bad"
even watching an LP of it is unbearable
Or "it can't be that bad"
I would much rather spend the day playing Atari ET and CDI Zelda
anyday
This is a list of video games notable for negative reception, often gaining such reception due to being perceived by reviewers as having low-quality or outdated graphics, glitches, poor controls for gameplay, or irredeemable game design faults. Such games are identified through overall low review scores including low aggregate scores on sites su...
I'd rather play action 52
CDI zelda is a masterpiece by comparison
Nintendo Power themselves ranked it as the worst game on a Nintendo platform. ๐
it should of been an outrage tbh, selling that game at n64 game prices
typing "it can't be that bad", immediately followed by discord "Several people are typing ... " ๐
even speedruns of it are boring
It gets worse as you play. Everyone makes fun of the rings but thatโs more enjoyable than the stages after it lol.
yeah the rings look like the "fun" part
god the ice-breath stuff
The rings are the best part
one of your main weapons just murders the framerate down to single digits every time you fire
Even Blast Processingโข๏ธ wouldn't help that.
I was set on finishing superman 64, got half way through it and had to take a break from the core for a couple days lol
if you put some cheats on to disable the time limit and just fly off and explore the city it is a little bit novel how big it is
im up to jabu jabu on an ocarina playthrough, booted up majoras mask cos i wanted to see it in action
it looks so good ๐ญ๐
for how quickly they turned around MM it really is a step up on graphics
yeah, i guess ocarina being developed thru the early n64/development, much longer dev process
MM they knew what they were doing going in
Robby quest 64 playthrough check in
That Super Mario 64 Shotgun hack is hilarious.
yupppp
its what im looking at and playing today LOL
with dualshock ps4 controller
I'm surprised you can destroy the trees a little with the mario shotgun hack
does it work through the whole game?
That Fire Shotgun with L is an odd choice. Thankfully it's easily remappable.
Is there anything else you can shoot besides the trees to damage them
like everything lol
That's awesome hahah
Launch the big Chomp into the air. ๐
lol can you just shoot your way right to bowser?
Blast your way through good ol' Mario 64 with a SHOTGUN! A completely new shotgun mechanic complete with firing, a jump-boost, an aiming mode with a crosshair, and many unique interactions to make for a fresh SM64 experience.
- ParaLLEl with its native plug-in is the way to play this game. This also supports dual analog for aiming mode when us...
I like how it's suggested that he's about to blow away the baby penguin. ๐คฃ
Someone's gotta shoot that damn monkey
ok this is much higher effort than i was expecting wow
looks like they've really remade the game as a shooter lol
Can't say I've ever played Tonic Trouble before, but I'm pretty sure this isn't what the title screen should look like
Compare to the title screen here: https://www.mobygames.com/game/2765/tonic-trouble/screenshots/n64/194359/
So far though the rest of the game seems to be working fine
I think the pc version of tonic trouble is actually better. I believe it's got fmv at the start that's not in the n64 version
big if true
and the player 2 controller joystick is camera control for aiming. in mister osd you can enable "Dual controller P1>P2" and play with a dual stick
yeah it like, actually looks legit fun
until i watched the vid i assumed it was like, a silly proof of concept
you can also aim the shotgun down and fire and it will kick you up in the air
ive only played a tiny bit to test it worked.. keen to dive in more properly later
I remember the hack where mario was in a wheelchair
and widescreen too! if you press start, there's a widescreen mode, and then again mister OSD has the option for Fullscreen
Does the Mario 64 shotgun hack work with the core or at least real hardware?
DanGPTV who did the mod wrote the note "This works on N64 hardware, though for the best framerate and graphical effects, play on ParaLLEl"
not too sure what's referring to, initial impression seems fine
I will definitely have to check that out
here's running on mister
#1096015979055697940 message
mario 64 loses its E for everyone rating with the level of violence on display
after he cleans out bowsers castle, booster tower is next

does anyone remember how the mirror room works in mario 64
its like a bot that copies the players movements or something right
The shotgun automatically fires downward if you fire it while in the air.
like a quake rocket jump lol
I'm not sure, but this thread seems to think so: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/198848-super-mario-64/42557229
For Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64, a GameFAQs message board topic titled "Proving that the Mirror Mario is a second, programmed Mario and not a reflection".
Apparently with a Gameshark you can enter that side of the mirror and walk around
i like the idea that the second mario is controlled by miyamoto himself
and everytime someone goes into that room, he has to get up from his desk, go over to his computer, and control mario
question about the dtb file, do i still need to use an unstable mister to use it?
I'll have to try that with the gameshark and see what happens
Is there a list of untested games?
Ah wait I read the graph wrong
Lol
Maybe I should go to bed at a reasonable time for once
whats the tester people use for the analog stick range
ping time over the week/running average and running year
9 out of 10 people agree that polls are completely made up
people like to look at graphs for some reason
60% of the time graphs are right, every time
even a broken clock is right twice a day
grafana is prettier
I had trouble reading it at first
out of nowhere

MiSTerโs framework makes it kind of easy or at least easier. Turn turbo on for the jump button (A button) - Hold A and press the MiSTer Menu button. Then change the turbo frequency to slightly slower because SM64 runs at 30 fps - hold dpad right and press the MiSTer menu button.
Do a long jump on the stairs while holding both Z and A. Then pull the stick back, but not completely back. . Mess around with your backwards velocity a bit till it works.
i just did it, took me for fucking ever but i did it
so the trick is to not go all the way back on the stick? i thought it was more of the mashing, all i know is i got it after 15min but i cant do it consistantly on the stairs before the endless
endless its just a matter of time before i get up but the one 1 floor below is rough
I am not fully sure. I just know it didnโt work when I pulled fully back
I've tried but have never been successful
wonder how you can tell if a game is perfect
can I play castlevania 64 yet?
you can't
oh
ill come back later
i will miss you
I won't ๐ she's right here
@woeful grove play SotN instead
no. I want the only good n64 game, castlevania. I've never played it, but it's castlevania so it must be good.
why does it feel like vampier just made a your mama joke, except with kitrinx
I take it there are no hacks that remove TLB from either of the two Castlevanias and they are still playable?
because @woeful grove is too young to be my mother
huh?
no idea
was there an emulator that didn't work with TLB at some point? trying to understand why the patches exist
improve speed
if you really use it, instead of just setting it up one time and forget it, because you don't really need it anyway, it will cost CPU performance. The more you use it(amount of different mappings), the more it costs
free are only 2 entries for instructions and 32 entries for data. if you use more, it will cost
oh so these are patches that helped keep framerates up on original hardware as well? that makes a lot of sense then
๐
so you run update_all (or update?) script after updating downloader.ini? i was using the n64 updater script before but it doesn't seem to pull the latest
did you add the text in the downloader.ini?
i just ran update all and it pulled todays
Is there some special trick to get the auto detect to work with the N64-database.txt file? I have the everdrive romset, put the text file in the rom folder with the games and bios. Auto detect always fails.
keeping it up is good
You are best to read the pins and add a line to the downloader .ini which will grab the latest build and .txt file when ran, and update all grabs the bio files for you
wait til
sees the skeletons on motorcycles in castlevania
Thank you moondandy, using the update all fixed it. No idea why putting the files in manually from FPGAZumSpass site didn't work but hey it's working now ๐ .
Hello, with your emulator can you see how many entries the TLB enabled games are using? Thank you.
@weary beacon what emulator?
His own development emulator
@orchid nimbus #1096015979055697940 message
?
Mario Golf is not on the list ?
@orchid nimbus they weren't asking what games need tlb, they were asking how many tlb entries games were using per robert's comment there
yes. I can see how many entries are used and how often they are swapped out and could even calculate roughly how much performance it costs. Maybe worth to try with some different games to get a feel before doing the TLB implementation to see what we really need in the core
This is a great idea ๐ it would be great to share these numbers with us ๐
can do that when i start working on it
can't wait for the numbers to be shared then next day, it's implemented
it sounds to me, that tlb is a big thing to implement
it sounds like a little thing with big consequences
A virtual address is converted into a physical address by using the internal TLB. The internal TLB is a full-associative memory having 32 entries, and one entry is mapped with an odd and even numbers in pairs.
like that is all it is, a virtual address scheme...but i guess that is huge and slows everything down
completed nascar 2000
not particularly great, but handles pretty well and runs at a decent clip
the commentary should be turned off though, lol
How are the tracks? Anything exciting?
most of the tracks are quite simple as they are all actual NASCAR tracks and very fast with a few exceptions. Sears Point and Watkins Glen are road courses with pretty interesting layouts, though they are both pretty short
the rest are ovals or something close to that
the game is extremely similar to Nascar '99 with a few improvements
it kind of renders the other game obsolete as it is basically the same but slightly better
the handling is slightly better, the graphics are slightly better, and they added a slipstream/drafting meter to the HUD... and that's it lol
It is. It's virtual memory + direct memory access. It's a lot and it needs to be done really well
Sounds like a NASCAR game to me haha. I remember my brother using an elastic for Gran turismo on the analog sticks and tape to accelerate for one of those oval races that has like 100 laps
it's said that implementing it might slow down the core too
Games like Perfect Dark have had TLB Patched out. Honestly, if it came down to the wire, we still have some hope.
Too early to say, though.
My first love was Hover Crate. Unlike Companion Cube, Hover Crate has never let me down.
Hover crate lets me down when enemies decide they wanna shoot it until it blows up and I have to restart the mission :p
More quality time spent with hover crate then
Maybe hover crate will make a comeback if they ever release the reboot they've been working on
This works! No jumping
@wanton sun Beatle Adventure Racing skybox and car color etc fixed... Awesome ๐
Are the trees still crazy looking?
I think they looked OK but will take a better look later.
Wait... That was Beetle Adventure Racing, right? ๐ค
Yes
Which games are using YUV textures?
So, what is up with Dr. Mario? That's not YUV?
If i understand good TLB implementation will be done at the end because it will slow down the core?
oh, there is still some fog missing?
Yeah, in Beetle Adventure racing
Possibly
Most visable in Mount Mayham
The lack of fog
"It works as a post-processing and uses depth buffer as the texture source."
Huh
and here I was thinking the game looked perfect ๐
Compared to beforehand, yes haha
I just watched some footage on youtube, the fog adds a lot ๐
@wanton sun Fog... With Beatle Adventure Racing screenshot... http://gliden64.blogspot.com/2014/07/depth-buffer-emulation.html?m=1
Shotgun Mario is a romhack of all time
I believe it's being left til near the end because it will make debugging more difficult. So need to squish all possible bugs before it's implemented in the core.
been playing Shotgun Mario and had first crash an hour in LOL (had the romhack debug info pop up, not a mister crash)
It's being saved for last because GoldenEye is the best game ever on N64 therefore saving the best for last.
Did you shoot the baby penquin? Or are you not a monster? ๐
Please. LOL what do u think
i shot EVERYTHING
the game crashed when i shot the eel underwater
i was kind of just playing the game proper for a bit getting every star. it's kind of just a fun way to play Mario 64 having the rocket jump lol ... altho the camera style does kind of go against the super mario 64 run and jump physics. so it's also definitely a silly way to play it LOL
I don't think so it will just make debug harder for other things
I'm impressed it even runs on real hardware
for sure!!
how far have people managed to get on mario shotgun 64?
oh the whole room is about that already haha I see
i was playing for an hour and just working thru the first couple of levels
Wow goldeneye uses a LOT of TLB: https://github.com/kholdfuzion/goldeneye_docs/blob/master/notes/GE Documentation/TLB index NGEE.txt
I love ITX motherboards
With this adapter you can use an SNES controller on a N64.
can use SNES mouse to work as a standin N64 mouse
Does anyone have this controller
I can't figure out how to make Rumble work, driving me nuts
I have this controller as well, and no I haven't managed to get rumble to work either. ๐
I'll take a look tonight once i'm home from work and let you know.
I wouldn't be surprised that more N64 controllers will get better compatibility overtime
i think its the same with the Brawler64 bluetooth too. i dont have rumble
I can get rumble to work with the DualSense but not with the NSO controller or the Brawler64 NSO edition. As far as I can understand after reading a lot about it, it's related to Linux drivers and not all pads are "officially" supported yet.
Ah ok
Good to know, thanks all
I miss the insane rumble
I know we all gab about it everyday, but... Holy shit how lucky are we to have Robert and his work
No, that's a pic of a system that Robert is going to cram into it as a core.
Enjoyer of good games, as proven by
pfp
The question is, should you
Hey nobody really relishes the task of having to kill Dracula, but sometimes we just have to buck up and do what's right.
-Simon Belmont
he didnt actually say that. I just made it up.
I just really want to play something on n64 and I can't find any game I really want to play on it
I know castlevania 64 is bad, but i've never played it
The more I learn about TLB the more confused I am about it. If it's just an addressing lookup table but using it more than a little negatively affects performance what was it actually good for
the same thing as war?
Hot take: Castlevania 64 isnโt bad, donโt take every common internet opinion as gospel
I haven't liked any of the 3d castlevanias
Honestly some of the most fun I've had with this core has been the jank stuff. Some gems in there, enjoy the crap.
Theyโre very different and I get not liking them. Theyโre not bad tho
say it again
I haven't started it yet but I've got it ready to start on a rainy day.
I was making fun of the song
Huh?
mee too
"Absolutely nothing"
'Say it again"
Just like nobody really knows what the TLB is supposed to be for
Huh! Absolutely nothing. As weโve just established
Itโs basically slow & fake cache expansion, right
im sure it has a purpose, and I could probably figure it out if I actually looked up the details, but probably Robert will just appear and explain it to me like i'm a golden retriever anyway
Nintendo did just kind of throw every hardware feature they could think of into the N64, to various amounts of success.
@woeful grove goldens are the best though ๐
lol they are soooo loud
exactly
๐
I wanna siiiing
Yea I'd also be interested in an explanation for dummies, it seems strange that so many games work without it, it couldn't have been that important for development
they work because the operators are never used
For using Virtual memory
it seems like it's a totally optional subcomponent
Yeah
oh is that what it is, just a virtual memory thing?
Yeah the real question becomes why did the few games that use it decide to do so. What did they think they were getting out of it?
The use of virtual memory on a system like the N64 is ease of development
It doesn't give you more memory
what does it give you
I would have said better performance, but the Perfect Dark patch proves that's not necessarily the case.
It's just changing and reallocating addresses, isn't it?
you want to put something in this location, you're going to put it here instead
Easier programming
Maybe Rare just didn't do a great job implementing it.
so like for the n64 version of realloc()?
so you can kind of keep the pointer in the same spot but to a different block of memory?
Like the way Mario 64 uses it, which basically aliases cartridge adresses to memory (From me trying to understand it)
or switch between buffers or something?
Yeah
That makes sense
People have said TLB made it easier to program the games but I'm not sure how much of that is true. It also allowed for the creation of a large amount of "virtual" memory theoretically providing more storage but I think it's more to do with ease of programming at the "slight" cost of performance (although it wasn't advertised as that to developers.
those kinds of abstractions, esp when dealing with low level code like that, I could see as being a huge source of bugs
because unlike a more high level language, it's going to really murder readability of the code
wonder if TLB will be a pain to impliment or not
like you can never trust a pointer
its interesting that seemingly no first party nintendo games used it
My understanding is TLB isn't so much hard to implement as really tedious as it involves a lot of parallel components and resource use.
Exactly, so if you make the pointers constant it can help development
mario 64 uses it for the stretchy face
seems like it is just demanding on timing so robert wants to do it last to make development faster
hard timing = longer and less stable compiles
The core already doesn't pass timing lol
yes, but you can miss by a little or miss by a lot
only since the interlace change though right?
like jaguar for instance doesn't pass timing by a lot
so a build can randomly run games or not it's so bad
It's like 83MHz out of 93 and nobody has raised any consurns
Since always
TLB / pointers used quite extensively and reliably in Goldeneye : https://github.com/kholdfuzion/goldeneye_docs/blob/master/notes/GE Documentation/TLB index NGEE.txt
oh yes true! there is the backstory there that the stretchy face was developed as a tech demo testing out the N64 capabilities, and was shoehorned into the game. the actual game part of mario 64 doesn't use it.
(Still gotta get to understand why my interlace doesn't work haha)
It's a case by case basis how important timings are. Usually the more components are working in parallel, the more important it is to have close timings.
paper mario is the other one, that came from nintendo Intelligent Systems. maybe i'm more just referring to Nintendo EAD not using it
when i think of "in house first party nintendo"
Now if only some genius could cross-reference this with address ranges posted by that same guy in the Goldeneye decompilation and recompile a TLB-free (hard-coded/pointer-removed) version (Like the perfect dark hack), I'm sure it would cut the amount of TLB work needed in Robert's core
What type of information is it pulling or is that a dumb question
I wonder if any game actually uses the full extent of the TLB. Just making a TLB implementation that matches what games actually use might be easier than making a TLB that matches the original hardware.
Nobody even compiled a proper Mario 64 yet
Like for mario stretchy face and paper mario dust, I can see how that stuff was added later
yes this has been mentioned by Robert. some games only use it very sparingly
You need to change mode. Start+B for 5 seconds. You should have 2 lights on the controller.
sure careful coders can deal with it, I can just tell you it probably creates an extra burden of care
yes like that. you can have multiple processes and each can have its own flat memory without knowing what the others do
it's good in concept
Yeah, thereโs just Castlevania and Castlevania Legacy of Darkness which is like an improved version but changes stage layouts so it doesnโt make the original irrelevant.
oh didn't LoD get totally retconned?
I donโt know
You have to beat the werewolf guyโs story to play the original Castlevania 64 ones - Reinhardt and Carrie
Anyways, I plan on checking both out, seem like fun games

Has anyone looked into core performance with the ram overclock for the mister?
https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?t=4320&sid=4bb2c43ec7f06f69a81709c0a498f355&start=180
In the thread people are suggesting that increased ram speed may help with slowdowns, but the way robert explains, the ddr3 is only accessed as 125 mhz, so wouldn't this mean a ram overclock is totally pointless?
#1096015979055697940 message
Or would an overclock / timing adjustment lower access latency, and therefore that would improve core performance? At the end of the day, if the ddr3 has lower latency than the SDram module, wouldn't this also cause issues?
Left and left we go
Have you ever met Beyoncรฉ
yes

Me neither which Console is your favorite
Something about Robby is different today
the REAL slowdown is caused by one's own lack of a proper sleep pattern from writhing in nightmarish pain after having played castlevania 64 the day before
Who can really say. Do we really care about consoles or do we care about the games for them?
If a console had no games, would it really be a console at all?
what are some N64 games that are horrid other than Superman 64? I'm trying to relive my blockbuster memories.
You're crushing it
Me neither, do you prefer a Digital IO or Analog IO board
I really dislike mace
My problem with conversations for real is I usually ask uncomfortably demanding questions when someone was trying to smalltalk
Excellent
or just dont care about irrelevant information
do you really want to go there? you could enhance your nostalgia emulation by doing regression hypnosis trying to dig up other painful memories of those years. couple that with n64 and you could simulate your previous life accurately.
absolutely
lol
This is a good conversation
we both graduated from charm school
I had Nascar 99 and Idk if it ever made sense to me, closest of owning shovelware on my small collection of N64-games back the day
(YMMV)
that's why I need this lol. I remember playing a lot of bad games, I made some horrible choices when I was a young lad, while my parents divorce on the next room. I just don't remember the name of the games.
lets talk more about me
it was smash bros
I did like racing games, imma poke that one
you're never around. you finally pipe up. we gotta get down to it. snes is the best system ever?
i ain't gonna derail but CONFIRM OR DENY

Oh man I love the Dreamcast
I'm so bad with dates it was literally the only one that came to mind that I know
IDK how downshifting or upshifting in that game works for example, not much sign of it after I press either buttons for it (L or Z)
I don't really eat dates
Don't like them
Though rest of my family does
I think my ideal date is someone who is autistically obsessed with the same thing I am autistically obsessed with and the 12 hours of nonstop talking about every tiny detail of whatever it is.

you know what?! good point. GBA sound was garbage most of the time.
SNES probably has the most modernly enjoyable games of any retro system
i learned nothing from this little chat. i gained nothing. no friends nor enemies. i am at peace with myself. i'm going to watch star trek now. on oled. strange new worlds. not that old 60's shit on a tube!
Some games made great use of it under that limitation but man, yeah
SNES-ports suffer badly if not optimized

that would make it interesting ๐

funny thing on switch n64 Emulator it works
Is there a way to swap it to X input?
IIRC it doesn't have X-Input
sorry only D and S Mode still no rumble
Can someone check the Castlevanias and see if they really use TLB for much? maybe we can patch one of them until it's implemented
Left field thought. If cheats were implemented, are there any cheats for the TLB games that would skip past TLB parts and make them at least partly playable?
Sounds like last resort incase TLB can't be implemented on the games that need it - IDK would it be too favored though
I am more thinking in the interim, if cheats are easily to implement
May be we are at the stage now it is worth requesting N64 pack be added here so it is there if someone wants to try implement cheats
https://gamehacking.org/mister/
that is a pretty hot take because it was crucified when it came out for being really ugly, really hard, and having difficult controls
also the two extra playable characters got cut
the second castlevania game fixed a lot of issues and was a better game
I honestly believe it was developed to impress people at in store kiosk demo units
because you see mario's giant head floating there and you can interact with it, and it looks about 100 times more advanced technologically than the game its attached to
its very tech demo-esque
they honestly could have made it into its own minigame, like you could change marios hat and put glasses on him and stuff
Also made it more difficult to emulate
did it really? I know it uses TLB and it can't run on the mister yet. But did early emulators have trouble with it too?
Tried to do some quick searching on and off the Discord, but couldn't find anything:
Is N64 Transfer Pak support on the roadmap for the reflex adapter? Frankly, I'm not clear if it's even possible.
have you tried asking Porkshop himself on his Discord? ๐
Not a hot take; the game was received well when it released and people liked it. You only saw the hate from fans which bubbled up in the early 2000s.
Recently done 3 but I don't know if they're on the compatibility sheet or not
Its average ranking has it at 78%, which is better than a ton of games.
that's what I'm referring to :>

now everyone pretends to have always liked Mischief Makers
Most people who hate it never played it. Itโs not great and itโs not bad. Itโs a product of the time and it was pretty cool, if very basic.
I was there in the trenches and got looked at like a weirdo when it was new, cause nobody wanted 2D games
Yeah never been a fan, tried playing it on the core and I still donโt like it. Itโs not for me and thatโs ok.
Yeah updates haven't been made yet. ๐
GT64, Star Wars Ep. 1 Racer, and Cruis'n Exotica USA ROMs all completeable.
The aesthetics of MM lasted longer than the game itself
@toxic pumice I'll do that for you
Thank you. I don't have edit access. ๐
True
All the red is TLB
and most likely some of the yellows (if not all)
I'm sure Mario 1000 year door is in there too
Mario 1000 year door is on the gamecube
Hold start+b until it goes to xinput mode
Two leds will light up
So that works, but weirdly in this mode my controller won't recognize L on analog stick
go remap the whole thing from scratch its essentially a different pad in that state
ok
playable/completeable should be 1 stat
idk, i think its about right as is
Canโt wait for tlb
Perfect Dark TLB patch is a great example of a game that's playable but technically can't be completed so I agree they should be separated
I do think a fair amount of players at launch were put off by the first level, which I'd concede is maybe the weakest. It's a rough first impression
Shouldn't Dark be listed under perfect?
totally oposite for me. I didn't like it back then because it was 2D and I wanted 3D Gameplay. Now finally I finished it on the Core and I must say how ignorant I was back then. The game def. didn't get best attention and reviews were mediocre. I must say it took guts to release a game like that back then
It could do with being more friendly and intuitive for sure
Shake shake
I prefer Sin & Punishment and Bangaioh from the N64 Treasure games buuuuut MM is still nice
For me it was the Alien Theme that I didnโt care about. Strangely I loved Jet Force
By the time Jet Force was a thing I was falling off my N64
Sin and Punishment is incredible, absolutely loved it.
Moving to the PS2 if I remember correctly
Bomberman 64 is also a bit underrated imo. I think itโs usually thought of as mid tier, but imo itโs up there with the greats. Very clever level design
Does a credit feed count as a completion by the way? S&P translation patch is completeable in the way that I have a clear time and unlocked hard mode
never realized the sequel was also Treasure.. I guess that's why it was so good
I definitely rate Successor slightly below the original. It didn't grab me in the same way.
mmhmm
It's also a looooong game for a rail shooter
Yeah, Bomberman 64 is fantastic.
I wish there was more than just one bomberman in this style. Everytime a Bomberman is announced I hope it is similar to that
Itโs not a 1cc but hey, Iโm not here to gate keep. If you enjoyed it and you consider it beaten, why not?
I absolutely wanna chase the 1cc. It ain't realistic any time soon though. ๐
I'm choking on the same Sentry boss during Stage 2-2 at the moment.
Oh yeah thatโs quite a bit to go, then. I think I made it to the air carrier
When he said '1 playable game by Christmas' he meant 'everything else in perfect and completeable' obviously.
I think he meant cautious
๐
@wanton sun there I fixed it for you ๐
to be honest if TLB turns out to be a huge pain in the behind and it can't be fully implemented look at what we can all play
I thought he revised that to say 1 GB game by xmas? although he did make that happen the next day. ๐
Maybe he's not that great at telling time
lol
"Screenshots might be from older cores before fixes" I had to add that to the core screenshots
because some look much different and complete now
You never do that yeah. I just pick off 2-3 at a time
Yes it should count and I feel strongly about that lol
It's doing the necessary testing imo
Also love they game but fuck that one level that doesn't auto scroll, on the beach. Oof.
๐
Yup that was my point really. It can technically be run through all the way. ๐
Exactly ๐ฏ
Also ggs!
It's not even that easy to feed
I've lost my credits many time before the end
Lotta weird bosses where if you don't know what to do, it oofs
I absolutely love the gameplay of that stage but the animations go slightly wonky as they shift it into a side-scroller
But I like how it gives out credits like candy
Also balls hard
Spider seemer. ๐ฆ
Haha ye it's just a weird stage. Should I be running or shooting
Stupid stupid stupid
I will get a 1CC eventually tho
Such a cool game
Unfortunately has me holding my N64 control mad funny hahaha stick + Dpad
@mortal panther yeah I posted a corrected version above
All games working seems quite realistic at this point.
By Christmas almost feels pessimistic at the rate Robert is progressing ๐คฃ
The question is TLB lol
hacking up something for tlb would be 3-4 days or so i would assume? But then i have to live with a bad hack. I rather spend the time to make something good when the CPU is really ready for it. My goal is to keep the CPU at full clock speed even with TLB
Which means that seems feasible given current knowledge?
i have some ideas how it should be possible, yes
most likely the TLB will cost some extra cycles when the page table needs to be modified, but as i assume that most games will not use many entries anyway that should be fine. But that theory still needs to be proven
For the time being, I like being more or less 'forced' to spend time with the other games in the library rather than nothing but the 'heavy hitters'. I never spent this much time with my actual N64s over the last 27 years. ๐
it's 100% clear that a fully cycle accurate TLB with 32 entries is not possible on mister, but if i can make it accurate for e.g. 8 entries and games don't use more anyway, i can live with that
That makes perfect sense. ๐ really appreciate your work so far, it's already incredible.
would changing an 8 entry tlb to 32 be a 5second change or more involved?
It's a shame that two games my wife and I want to play are 'locked' behind TLB but we've already had a ton of fun on what's playable right now.
What would we do without the FIFO write buffer
fifo write buffer comes soon
it's the next task after some more rdp stuff
this and async VI
I'd like to recommend bomberman generations and jetters to you if you haven't played them, I feel like those two have been the closest scratching that bman 64 itch
it will be a parameter so i can experiment with it: a build with 2,4,8,16,32 entries, compare clock speed and ressource cost. Check how games react
so 5 second change
What thatโs mean for the games? Some will work and some not? Or they will work with some loss, for exemple?
I live by this mantra every day
if they use more entries, they may loose 1-2% performance?
can't say for sure, but should be in that area
Am I right in saying we're currently at a performance deficit much bigger than that with the core in its current state?
probably, yes
Really? It feels so right though?
Given how well most of the library runs right now, that 1-2% sounds almost insignificant really. ๐
It must be
so in the end 8 entries witch access penalty when more are used might still be faster for games compared to 32 entries due to hw limitations resulting in a lower cpu frequency?
keep in mind that the DDR3 is currently not limited, so memory acces and bandwidth is about 60% faster than it should be on average. Once the memory speed is cut-down, you would notice it more
with maybe 16 being good/fast enough for all cases
good over speed for sure
every time
Not sure if asked before but is there no way to overclock the cpu slightly to offset the difference?
You can do it! ๐ช
The whole thing with FPGA is being able to strive for accuracy though isn't it, so I completely appreciate wanting to keep things as true to original hardware as possible without relying on hacky solutions.
the original TLB has a 3 cycle penalty for swapping the page by comparing 32 entries at once. with a super ressource and clock efficient way it would be only 2 compares per cycle, leading to extra cost of 16 cycles when the page was not hit. to even reach 1% performance loss, you need to loose about 1 million clock cycles per second, so that would be about 60.000 entry changes or process switches per second. Even that seems unrealistic
so likely even the cheapest TLB trick would cost less than 1% performance in any game
but again, not tested, just theory. i need to try
