Yeah, the Nightdive remaster of Doom 64 is fantastic.

rose elbow
#

does the nightdive remaster allow u to go chunky pixels ?

#

sort of a nostalgia request

oblique crow
#

I think so - I'll fire it up

I'd have to check. It's been awhile since I played it on my Switch.

worst case, DOOM64 GZDOOM, throw Vanilla Essence on it, and go full chonk

rose elbow
#

theres something about like, seeing Doom 64 on actual hardware, or robert's n64 core on mister, that instantly just triggers the nostalgia in a way the cranked up resolutions doesn't quite scratch for me

#

its more just the controller makes it harder to play lol

#

especially Doom 64 with texture filtering turned off, looks so nice to me

PSX DOOM, DOOM 64, and DOOM 3. The perfect horror trilogy.

i need to play through Doom with the psx soundtrack

PSX DOOM music is so crazy

I kinda wish doom 4 got released. I know it probably wouldn't have been great but I'm just curious how it would have turned out

chilly ember

Yea haha

mortal panther
#

Doom (2016) would have to be my favorite. The rest I don't really care to bother ranking... except for Doom 3. It's pretty far down whatever list I would manage to come up with.

languid dune
oblique crow
#

let me show you what I mean though by Vanilla Essence >:) I'll show in a minute

mortal panther
#

Doom 64 isn't a favorite... but I do like it a lot for what it offers. It has its own charm.

mortal panther

Doom (2016) just got everything right though.

Of the classic Doom trilogy (1, 2, and 64), Doom 64 is honestly my favorite. I just love the level design.

you can tell this image is fake coz original Doom never came out on N64

mortal panther
#

DOOM Eternal pissed me off though. Not the game... it was fine, and I had lots of fun with it. It was the purchase.

I pre-ordered the PC version online through Best Buy, solely because they offered a so-called 'physical' option. To top things off, they also offered a 'Best Buy Exclusive' Collector's Edition steelbook case to go along with the normal plastic one.

Then it arrives in the store. I go to pick it up, along with the steelbook case. I got home and opened it up, and realized that the only thing physical about that edition was the case.

In place of the actual disc was a disc-shaped piece of cardboard with a download key printed on it. That was complete bullshit. Why even offer an additional Collector's Edition steelbook case for a game that never had a physical disc to begin with?

rose elbow
#

oof

chilly ember
#

Collector edition disc shaped cardboard

mortal panther
#

I'll cherish it always...

#

The cardboard disc actually came in the plastic case. The steelbook case was completely empty. It's just plain ol' cardboard. 😉

latent galleon
#

that is...insulting haha

rose elbow
#

was it possible to buy the steelbook by itself ?

mortal panther
#

I don't think so, but I didn't ask.

rose elbow
#

thank god lol

latent galleon
#

plus this poor planet when you buy cardboard inside plastic to get a code

rose elbow
#

i was just imagining someone buying the steelbook first by mistake, realizing, then buying the physical edition

#

either way its a kick in the face

elfin depot
#

@oblique crow do you have the bluejeans though?

rose elbow
#

its like, surely just not releasing the cardboard cutout edition of Doom would've been an option

#

i wonder what the decision process that results in stuff like that happening

stiff condor

I stopped buying physical games and I wait until games get very cheap before buying them.

stiff condor

Yeah it all comes down to $$$. That's why most business decisions are made.

rose elbow

at the very least it needs a big red sticker plastered across the box saying "WARNING this is a piece of cardboard inside"

not a lot to ask

stiff condor

I'm sure there was some fine print somewhere lol

elfin relic

stiff condor

I have a USB C Blu-ray drive just in case

#

I used it a few months ago to burn a Hexen disc for my OG Xbox

cerulean elk
chilly ember

I keep external drives arounds just for the rare time I need to burn a cd/DVD but that is almost never these days haha

elfin relic
#

I actually also own a couple old plextors and an IDE to USB cable, specifically for CD dumping, but those only come out when needed

mortal panther
#

I stopped caring after that incident. I shouldn't be expected to create my own disc that I supposedly already paid for. It's like walking in to a fast food restaurant with several people 'working' behind the counter... but after walking up to order and waiting while they casually ignore me, one of them eventually motions towards the kiosk where I'm now expected to order my own meal... even though they could (and should) have taken my order at the counter like always.

MiSTer Addons

REQUIRES IO ANALOG 6.1 / IO DIGITAL 1.2 AND NEWER  SNAC is the most direct way of interfacing cores with their native accessories (controllers, light guns, etc). You can not mix and match peripherals between cores. NES core requires NES accessories, etc (technically SNES controller works on NES, but you get the point).

#

basically has this been abandoned? why is there an hdmi one now?

zinc dew
#

I own the SNAC adapter that MisterAddons sells and it's extremely well built and works brilliantly. The price is fantastic if you have no interest in using SNAC for the PS1/Saturn/N64.

#

I am friends with him so my recommendations are biased but I stand by them.

inner garden
#

I have a separate adapter that works for playstation, 2 player with two memory card slots

#

now I must buy a third adapter

zinc dew
#

Up to you, whatever your preference is. I'm sure your PS1 2-player adapter will work with Saturn/N64. I am not familiar with it so I can't offer input.

question idk if someone ask or not is fpgazumspass going to implement virtual cpak like the ps1. ex ps1 snac with virtual memory?

solemn marlin

They got their adapted cords running through the whole project, getting their plastic injected fingers all over the entire operation..

inner garden

I just hope they will make an n64 connector for the USB SNAC

I try to be upfront about that stuff. He's genuinely a really nice guy who's kind enough to listen to my ramblings and happens to make incredible accessories. The last thing I want is for my recommendations to come across as disingenuous so I try to remember to let people know about my bias so they can reach their own conclusions.

dreamy grove
#

I've definitely spent more on adapters than my de10-nano at this point

solemn marlin
#

The lag testing is pretty factual tbh

mortal panther
#

MiSTer is the only reason why I've purchased as many additional controllers as I have the past several years, that's true.

zinc dew
#

It's the same for me, it's crazy.

mortal panther
#

I doubt I would have even bought one 8BitDo controller if not for MiSTer.

worldly quartz

I do hope SNAX64 comes out soon since I already bought the cables

His ReflexAdapter is also compatible with the adapter cables he sells.

SNAX64 is only needed if you really want to play 4-player SNAC.

zinc dew

Densha de Go. Which means Train Husband.

solemn marlin

zinc dew

Lol I have no idea if you're making it up but I'll believe it, okay you're fibbing..

if you think about it, there could be infinite dimensions with infinite possibilities so could I be really fibbing in a reality composed eternal combinations?

They should've named it Train Trouble 64 so I could fit it in my small brain 😎

worldly quartz

They should have chagned it to densha gemu

worldly quartz
#

too bad the controller isn't very common on n64 here, while I've seen like 5 ps1 controllers of it here

elfin relic
#

there were more psx releases

#

just the sad single n64 release

#

so makes sense

zinc dew
#

But the sad single N64 release is better than the PS1 releases!!!!

solemn marlin

It's all true, the denshas really go go much faster in the 64 one

latent galleon

it is clearly 72 bits

worldly quartz
#

i mean the ps1 can be used on the switch version with an adapter

zinc dew
#

Oh damn that’s cool

elfin relic
#

I would like to be able to use one on PS4/5

#

because that release is much smoother than the Switch one

#

run along the yamanote line

solemn marlin
#

Seems like the perfect vr game

elfin relic
#

the PS4/5 one does do VR with PSVR1

#

which makes it all the more annoying that they released a switch controller and not one for the PS4

solemn marlin
#

It's great? I mean they could do that thing with gaussian splatting effect in vr, it'd be amazing

I bought the switch version because of that controller

CRTs are what these games were made on and intended for. Even if you don't need the motion clarity for N64, the medium of the CRT compliments the low-res graphics. The tiny ones look great too. This was taken on a composite only 9" Panasonic and looks awesome.

one guy even went on a long winded explanation why the one that he later found out to be the lcd had to be a crt

Rogue squadron is booting for me

#

Filmed on crt to be on topic

solemn marlin

I don't think there's anything magical that couldn't possibly ever be emulated by an lcd, but I also like the boxiness of it, it's more like an item, not an anonymous rectangle

wanton sun
#

did you try the hotfix i posted earlier for wark? there was a bug in the PIF/gamepad module that could make it hang when the game does strange things with controller accessory, maybe it helps

#

@desert crow maybe it would be worth having additional options in the OSD to shift the starting snac port. E.g. if you only select snac for port 3, it would automatically select snac input 1

#

e.g. in the controller select it would have none,cpak,rpak,snacX,tpak,snac1

#

where snacX would be 1,2,3,4 depending on the controller but snac1 would be static

#

so you can always bind the first snac input to any controller port

#

not sure if that would cover all cases required for those games that need it in port 3 or 4

desert crow
#

the train game might be a rare case, think it wants a regular controller in port 1 and train controller in port 3. I guess you could start snac at port 3 like you're suggesting and use usb for port 1.

#

There will be snax64 with 4 ports, and I'll probably do a 4 port board also.

#

in most cases 2 ports are ok if you're not trying to play 4p games

#

But I'll look at it and see how complicated it will be.

wanton sun
#

yes, maybe it's better to just use 4 port snac adapter if you have such exceptional cases

chilly ember
#

If You're the kind of person who has a densha De go controller laying around to use on the core, you probably already have a snac adapter 🤷

i don't want to move it further into the image, it's so annoying there

still need to decide if the core will have a fixed viewport (like psx with fixed vblank and hblank) or if variable vblank with aspect ratio calculation is needed

Thanks for the explanation, as always i learn a lot reading you 🤓

daring meteor

Isn't that set by the N64 itself, or no?

rose elbow
#

i didnt realize until just today just how weird Rogue Squadron was in that regard. it was confusing me for a minute there 😅

wanton sun
#

however, we can decide that we remove those black bars for hdmi and scale the image larger

daring meteor

Ah

wanton sun

most screens have more width then the original 4:3, so if lines in y direction are black anway, we could scale

#

the question is if we should

daring meteor

rose elbow
#

oooh. just looked, Rogue Squadron looks correct on CRT

wanton sun

with psx it caused a lot of trouble, so maybe i start with fixed vblank. that will look like crt/digital modded n64 then. Probably covers 95%+

rose elbow

i wonder how many games this applies to

wanton sun

basically all, as most games render at 237 lines height, causing a slight black bar all the time

Not at MiSTer but can at least say PAL games on the 10/23 YC core look pretty good. If there is jitter in Mario64 it's so tiny as to not be visible.
On the other hand, Stadium 1/2 jitter quiet a bit more than original hardware in menus (could all be interlaced I think). I'd not reported any of that given the clock and such is not implemented yet for CRT.

Has anyone tried loading N64 games via .mgl files? With the settings here (https://github.com/wizzomafizzo/mrext/blob/main/docs/systems.md#nintendo-64), it doesn't auto-load the save data. But it does load save data if you load the ROM via the core menu option.

Sample MGL that isn't working:

perhaps after VI async, noticeable timing differences should be the next defining factor.

I don't think Dr. Mario 64 has noticeable timing issues, but I'll leave that to those with original hardware to determine
