theres something about like, seeing Doom 64 on actual hardware, or robert's n64 core on mister, that instantly just triggers the nostalgia in a way the cranked up resolutions doesn't quite scratch for me
its more just the controller makes it harder to play lol
especially Doom 64 with texture filtering turned off, looks so nice to me

DOOM Eternal pissed me off though. Not the game... it was fine, and I had lots of fun with it. It was the purchase.
I pre-ordered the PC version online through Best Buy, solely because they offered a so-called 'physical' option. To top things off, they also offered a 'Best Buy Exclusive' Collector's Edition steelbook case to go along with the normal plastic one.
Then it arrives in the store. I go to pick it up, along with the steelbook case. I got home and opened it up, and realized that the only thing physical about that edition was the case.
In place of the actual disc was a disc-shaped piece of cardboard with a download key printed on it. That was complete bullshit. Why even offer an additional Collector's Edition steelbook case for a game that never had a physical disc to begin with?

I actually also own a couple old plextors and an IDE to USB cable, specifically for CD dumping, but those only come out when needed
I stopped caring after that incident. I shouldn't be expected to create my own disc that I supposedly already paid for. It's like walking in to a fast food restaurant with several people 'working' behind the counter... but after walking up to order and waiting while they casually ignore me, one of them eventually motions towards the kiosk where I'm now expected to order my own meal... even though they could (and should) have taken my order at the counter like always.

REQUIRES IO ANALOG 6.1 / IO DIGITAL 1.2 AND NEWER SNAC is the most direct way of interfacing cores with their native accessories (controllers, light guns, etc). You can not mix and match peripherals between cores. NES core requires NES accessories, etc (technically SNES controller works on NES, but you get the point).

SNAX has become the replacement since it supports the PS1/Saturn/N64 cores and is two player.
I own the SNAC adapter that MisterAddons sells and it's extremely well built and works brilliantly. The price is fantastic if you have no interest in using SNAC for the PS1/Saturn/N64.
I am friends with him so my recommendations are biased but I stand by them.
I have a separate adapter that works for playstation, 2 player with two memory card slots
now I must buy a third adapter

Up to you, whatever your preference is. I'm sure your PS1 2-player adapter will work with Saturn/N64. I am not familiar with it so I can't offer input.

They got their adapted cords running through the whole project, getting their plastic injected fingers all over the entire operation..
I try to be upfront about that stuff. He's genuinely a really nice guy who's kind enough to listen to my ramblings and happens to make incredible accessories. The last thing I want is for my recommendations to come across as disingenuous so I try to remember to let people know about my bias so they can reach their own conclusions.

It's another new adapter yes but it's also backwards compatible. They work with all the SNAC compatible adapter cables he sells.
His ReflexAdapter is also compatible with the adapter cables he sells.
SNAX64 is only needed if you really want to play 4-player SNAC.

I see the viability of flat screens for all kinds of reasons but there's just something lovely about a crt, once I got back into it, not having it and then getting the big box again, it's just different
Make sure the rom you’re using is from the Everdrive pack and make sure you have latest core and n64 database file. You can use the script that’s listed in the pins to make that step easier.

CRTs are what these games were made on and intended for. Even if you don't need the motion clarity for N64, the medium of the CRT compliments the low-res graphics. The tiny ones look great too. This was taken on a composite only 9" Panasonic and looks awesome.

ive found a good combination of filters that looks pretty great doing side by sides with a few crts. the sub pixel filters are great. ive actually got a few pics at home i took of the lcd, the tosh and the sony crt i will often send to people and ask which is the lcd
one guy even went on a long winded explanation why the one that he later found out to be the lcd had to be a crt
I don't think there's anything magical that couldn't possibly ever be emulated by an lcd, but I also like the boxiness of it, it's more like an item, not an anonymous rectangle

Most of them in the day basically continued on the Logo animation and then changed it.
firmware/sofwatre updates will change the logo from time to time and destroys this. No one wants to put it in there if it's going to be weird after the next update comes out.

I'm too stubborn for autofire or cheats for the core when I'm testing to completion. Superman 64 has cheats for infinite powers? Did I use them? Nope. I got to the end of superman 64 level without enough heat vision to start the bomb so I did it again
did you try the hotfix i posted earlier for wark? there was a bug in the PIF/gamepad module that could make it hang when the game does strange things with controller accessory, maybe it helps
@desert crow maybe it would be worth having additional options in the OSD to shift the starting snac port. E.g. if you only select snac for port 3, it would automatically select snac input 1
e.g. in the controller select it would have none,cpak,rpak,snacX,tpak,snac1
where snacX would be 1,2,3,4 depending on the controller but snac1 would be static
so you can always bind the first snac input to any controller port
not sure if that would cover all cases required for those games that need it in port 3 or 4
the train game might be a rare case, think it wants a regular controller in port 1 and train controller in port 3. I guess you could start snac at port 3 like you're suggesting and use usb for port 1.
There will be snax64 with 4 ports, and I'll probably do a 4 port board also.
in most cases 2 ports are ok if you're not trying to play 4p games
But I'll look at it and see how complicated it will be.

in theory netplay could be done via snac if you have some kind of module that transmits or relays signals over a network
but syncing might be an issue
And depending on how many people are playing there would have to be some pretty good servers
yeah, some kind of external module might be the only way. unless someone makes their own test build of the framework with netplay functionality, and introduce it to several cores via test builds. kinda like how we got YC video
even then I think it took a while before sorg gave it the OK to integrate the functionality

Probably because the design of levels became more open, but the draw distance is still really low

The green tree textures in lucy's levitation (Mario 64 hack) look correct in latest core, on earlier ones it looked like 2 textures moving over one another

@wanton sun thank you so much for this update! The only issue I see with the THPS games is the intro demos play too fast. There's overscan issues in the original hardware so its pretty accurate, maybe an overscan crop feature could be handy

on my real n64 digital i tend to crop 1-2px off every edge just to keep it tidy looking

i don't want to move it further into the image, it's so annoying there
the video out currently always forces 4:3. usually it should have black lines above and below the image, however, those are cut out by vblank currently
still need to decide if the core will have a fixed viewport (like psx with fixed vblank and hblank) or if variable vblank with aspect ratio calculation is needed
usually i would go for variable vblank as i hate black bars, but n64 doesn't really have much of them anyway

the n64 sets the output resolution and on a real n64 with either digital out or on a crt you get black bars
however, we can decide that we remove those black bars for hdmi and scale the image larger

Not at MiSTer but can at least say PAL games on the 10/23 YC core look pretty good. If there is jitter in Mario64 it's so tiny as to not be visible.
On the other hand, Stadium 1/2 jitter quiet a bit more than original hardware in menus (could all be interlaced I think). I'd not reported any of that given the clock and such is not implemented yet for CRT.

It's not the dpad being broken, since it still recognizes the input on the OSD menus.
if it works in the OSD it's just the mapping
either it's not mapped or you have some double mapping
I've repeatedly fixed the mapping and the core doesn't recognize it.
And I know it's specifically the Nintendo 64 core, because other cores recognize the input like normal.
but the core only received the up information from main, it is not aware of what controller you use
so it makes no sense it received a different up than e.g. the psx core

try deleting all the controller mapping files for the n64 core

Has anyone tried loading N64 games via .mgl files? With the settings here (https://github.com/wizzomafizzo/mrext/blob/main/docs/systems.md#nintendo-64), it doesn't auto-load the save data. But it does load save data if you load the ROM via the core menu option.

Apply the multiplayer mod first, then drag and drop the modified ROM onto the exe
