zinc dew
#

Yes

#

vapid hawk
#

really neat

zinc dew
#

Shadowgate > Turok

zinc dawn
#

Hmmm. I do like the expanded multi player but GE> PD because of Bond

zinc dew
#

Bond > Joanna Dark

vapid hawk
#

did you guys know there are some really cool GE romhacks?

#

like entire new single player campaigns

zinc dawn
#

Yeah like Goldeneye X

zinc dew
#

I want to play that

zinc dawn
#

And the hd hack

#

Mario Goldeneye

#

Goldfinger

zinc dew
#

There’s goldfinger but it doesn’t work yet sadly

zinc dawn
#

Spy Who Loved Me

vapid hawk
#

definitely going to be checking those out after the core is final

zinc dawn
#

Yeah the Goldfinger is good but the levels are just too big

#

I played them on my everdrive

zinc dew
#

Everdrive > Neverdrive

vapid hawk
#

i'm thinking of dropping my n64 out of my setup at this point

#

maybe put an xbox360 there

zinc dawn
#

Yeah definitely

#

I have OG Xbox, Xbox 360, Need an Xbox Series X

#

Sold my genesis, snes, ps1

#

Ps3

#

One FPGA to rule them all

vapid hawk
#

heh i just got a ps3

zinc dawn
#

Yeah I'm not a fan. Apart from MGS4

zinc dew
#

Still have all my original systems hooked up

#

I just play on my MiSTer though

vapid hawk
#

ridge racer7 seems neat, i've not really played it much yet though just been getting it setup

zinc dawn
#

The PS2 was just wayyyy better.

zinc dew
#

the N64 core has already replaced my N64 because of convenience

zinc dawn
#

Yeah no scalers

#

Or CRTs

#

Or RGB mods

zinc dew
#

360 was far superior to PS3 imo

zinc dawn
#

Yeah I agree

vapid hawk
#

like, empirically yes

zinc dawn
#

Even though I LOVE playstation

zinc dew
#

Me too

vapid hawk
#

my modded 360 has like, 200+ titles on it, my ps3 has like 35

zinc dew
#

PS1/PS2/PS4 are all incredible

zinc dawn
#

Indeed.

vapid hawk
#

and i really went out of my way to find anything that was a worthwhile exclusive or somehow better on ps3

zinc dawn
#

PS5 I just got

vapid hawk
#

the ps move games are neat, thats a lot of them really

zinc dawn
#

It's great for playing PS4 games

zinc dew
#

3D Dot Game Heroes is great

zinc dawn
#

And it doesn't sound like a jet engine. I don't have any PS5 exclusives.

#

I was considering a switch to play N64 but not needed thanks to Robert

vapid hawk
#

ratchet and clank is the best ps5 exclusive (excluding psvr2 stuff) imo

cerulean elk
zinc dew
#

thank you for believing in me elmorise

zinc dawn
#

I never played rachet

vapid hawk
#

it was the first one i played heh

#

its super slick, technically amazing does stuff that really justifies the hardware

zinc dawn
#

Nice. I am also looking forward to Alan Wake, DS2 and SH2 🙂 I've held out this long to buy it (traded in my PS3 and games for it) lol

vapid hawk
#

i can't wait for the resident evil4 remake vr mode

zinc dawn
#

I don't have VR

#

I tried it

#

You know I hooked up goldeneye to my psvr

#

It was interesting

vapid hawk
#

i got absolutely obsessed with that synthriders dancing game, i play like minimum an hour a day

zinc dawn
#

And I tried playing Resident Evil 7 but too scart

vapid hawk
#

yeah i wish they'd port that over to psvr2 i never played it

#

its crazy, like actually crazy how much more intense horror games are in VR

zinc dawn
#

Yeah they are absolutely horrifying

#

Can't you play resident evil 7 with a psvr 2 on a ps4?

#

I mean ps5

weary beacon
#

Forgive me if this is a stupid question... how can I get the Switch NSO N64 controller to work reliably via wired connection? It keeps cutting out and the Green/Orange LEDs go on/off. Works fine on Switch

zinc dew
#

Which is one of the reasons why the PSVR2 is dead

little socket
#

It died due to sony's decision to initially only sell it via their own online store

#

And people being cheap couch operators

neat sierra
#

I can’t even bring myself to buy a PS5 based on the offering let alone additional PSVR2 with no software. What a weirdly successful generation for Sony despite a lackluster system

#

Too bad since PSVR has some great experiences and it would be nice to have seen that continue to advance.

marble cargo
#

I would argue even the Xbox Series has more value, simply because of the backwards compatibility and how piss easy it is to run homebrew.

But only the demons souls machine plays demons souls

vapid hawk

i'm pretty sure there's better mods out now than the one i have aswell

viscid quiver
#

Maybe atleast in some of the more primitive games?

abstract slate
#

I probably won't dig it out of the closet for awhile. Maybe the mods will make more sense by then.

#

I just found a ps2 at a thrift store.

vapid hawk
#

honestly for how cheap pre-modded ones are i wouldn't even bother modding yours

#

there's specific later models you really want anyway - the slim ones after they fully fixed rrod

abstract slate
#

I think that's what I have

vapid hawk

they aren't really considered retro yet quite so prices are still pretty reasonable

#

you could always chat to a modder about what'd fit your console best

viscid quiver

Hi, stupid question’s I’m sure but, here we go anyway.
Snowboard kids (1st game) image is smaller than all other games tested.
Same game, seems to support memory card and rumble but there’s only one slot, do you have to choose 2 controllers and rumble on main controller and save to memory pack on controller 2? I’m confused lol

woven olive

No Mercy beatable since Sept 9. But the intro screens, some menu elements, wrestler entrances, and story text is borked. Gameplay is fine.

weary perch

it depends on the game

solemn marlin
stuck summit
#

DK64 I think is notoriously bad in software emulators due to timing inaccuracies

weary perch
#

tl;dr - generally the core runs a bit faster than hardware, and a bit slower than most emulators

whole yarrow
orchid nimbus
#

roms on the left / days since release on the bottom

#

progress over time

marble cargo
#

Some games are better with timings than others.

Banjo-Tooie is accurate since the music does sync up with the cutscenes like it should, but Pokémon Stadium 2 lacks the lag so it is faster than it should be.

weary perch
#

Ocarina of time runs faster than hardware, causing desync on some of the collapse cutscenes. meanwhile Battlezone doesn't quite run at full-speed and the audio crackles due to not getting what it needs in time

#

just depends on the game

stuck summit
#

I see. Cool, thanks! I haven't been testing games extensively so I was wondering on how things were currently.

weary perch
#

for some games it's already pretty close

#

Wave Race 64 drops frames in pretty much the same places as hardware

stuck summit
#

That's really encouraging. I wonder if better timings in the MiSTer core could help software emulators getting better in that regard too down the line.

vapid hawk
#

if it goes like psx/gba then yeah probably

latent galleon
#

bet

weary perch
#

Beetle Adventure Racing will be a good test case. it has
A) unlocked framerate
B) debug mode with framerate display that works on hardware

#

in that game, framerate is super important as it affects what happens when you go off of a jump. emulators run the game slightly too fast, which causes you have to notably better odds of getting lower/faster jumps

languid dune
#

Pilotwings 64 also has an unlocked frame rate. That's why the NSO version of the game runs at mostly 60fps, which the game absolutely does not achieve on real hardware.

#

im trying to use an n64 controller but the analog up and down doesnt work. When I go through the steps to define buttons there isnt an option to define analog

# plush summit It's the real deal 😎

I just need to wait for the restock. I didn't know about them until recently, and they were already sold out! I love that the latency is extremely low, and you can also still use the controllers to navigate the MiSTer OSD. Almost feels like there is no need for SNAC at this point.

plush summit
#

for transparency, rumble isnt supported for controllers yet, but there's an XInput build for GC/PSX

stuck summit
#

I built the picoswitch adapter for N64 controllers with like $10 in parts. Works really well. Sub 1ms latency

languid dune
#

I mainly want to use it for my SNES and 3D Saturn controllers anyway. So rumble isn't an issue for me personally.

plush summit
#

Awesome, you're gonna have a blast with it (when it comes back in stock)

latent galleon
#

@stuck summit you measured latency?

#

also what did you spend the other $6 on

#

haha

stuck summit

Yeah. Same response time as my daemonbites

#

and those are sub 1ms

plush summit
#

apparently Reflex is 3ms, but they got it down to 1ms now

stuck summit
latent galleon
#

i mean i wrote my own script to read the n64 controller using a pico, and i have no doubt it's good but

stuck summit
#

Oh really? Where can I get that

latent galleon
#

i don't know what the "but" was

#

nowhere, i did it after you showed me retro pico switch

#

i just wanted to see how it worked, and try to figure out bluetooth

#

which i did not

stuck summit
#

Aaah, yeah I was going to ask if you managed to get bluetooth working

languid dune
latent galleon
#

i think bluetooth is a linux driver issue

#

because it pretends to be a switch pro controller, but badly

stuck summit
#

Yeah, I noticed it didn't work properly on PC with BetterJoy. Kept disconnecting all the time. But Steam picked it up just fine as a Pro controller

latent galleon
#

honestly it sucks because with a battery the size of a pico it would be a wireless conversion with no board swap needed

#

i think this entire scene is sleeping on that, but people love their wires

stuck summit
#

Yeah, true

latent galleon
#

i mean it would barely add to the size of an SNES connector

stuck summit
#

probably lower latency too than the 8bitdo kit

latent galleon
#

you could destroy 8bitdo

stuck summit
#

their SNES/NES conversion kits are awful. Super laggy. Like over 20ms or something

not sure about the N64 one

This is gonna sound weird, but I'm interested to know if the last N64 games ever made can run on the core.

Usually, the last games made are supposed to be "the games that would push the hardware a bit to its limits."

Ever wonder what was the last game made for N64? It depends on what the 'final game' is, since it could be in Europe, USA, Japan or something else entirely.

Hey, I'm working on it 😆
Though most of my PAL testing was only those non-booting games from the NTSC list as of some weeks back.

I'll try to at least quickly check the other PAL games boot, get gameplay, confirm nothing too egregious is different.

i spent weeks figuring out how to pull off the facility speedrun

#

If I play a game that needs the controller pak, create a save, switch to another controller pak game and save that as well is my second game save stuck on a pak that's not automatically loaded when playing the second game?

raw oriole
toxic pumice
#

Well that's pretty sick. 🙂 I have absolutely zero experience using a QL.

weary perch
#

if you load a new game which has no .sav file created yet, and you have stuff saved to the CPAK, you'll still see those saves in the new game

#

you can hold Start on booting nearly any game with CPAK support to see what's saved

vapid hawk
#

isn't it a unique cpak per game?

weary perch
#

yes

#

but if you don't have a .sav yet, the CPAK isn't formatted when you create one

#

for safety reasons

fair stump
#

It's tripped me up since it was introduced but my understanding is a controller pak per game wasn't generated automatically when hopping between games

weary perch
#

you can manually format CPAK and reset, or you can hold Start and clear the prior save, or you can just let it ride if you don't need the space

#

if you have a .sav for the game, none of this applies

fair stump
#

So you can end up with multiple games on one if you don't use the format option

weary perch
#

it'll load in the new .sav

#

quicker to just hold start when booting a new game you haven't made a .sav for yet

#

then you can delete the old save and proceed as normal

#

once a .sav is created for that game, you don't need to worry about it ever again

fair stump
#

I think I understand but that seems extremely confusing to an end user

weary perch
#

basically Robert said he didn't want to automate formatting the CPAK. could lose a user's data if they switched games with autosave off and didn't manually save their CPAK (since on new load it'd format in that case)

#

it's not, really

#

the only quirk is your CPAK is not autoformatted - which is honestly a very wise decision

#

you need to consider what's on your CPAK one time - the first time you make a .sav

#

after that it's not a consideration

fair stump
#

If I'm a new user and just browsing through the n64 library between multiple cpak games won't you very quickly run into issues?

#

Without knowing to hit the format option

weary perch
#

most games warn you when starting if your CPAK is full

languid dune
#

Thinking about all the rom hacks I've tried on the core so far, and I think my favorite has to be the split-screen co-op hack for Super Mario 64. Insanely cool. I really wish Nintendo would do that with all their 3D Mario games.

weary perch
#

formatting automatically has more risk

native mesa
weary perch
#

i read Robert's reasoning for it and it makes sense to me

languid dune
native mesa
#

Is player 2 luigi?

fair stump
#

Not all cpak games fill it though, right? So you could have multiple games written to a single one if you're bouncing around, right?

weary perch
#

the tl;dr is this - hold start when you boot a new game. you'll never encounter an issue that way

languid dune
weary perch
#

you'll boot to the CPAK manager

fair stump
#

I understand but I'm coming at this from the perspective of a completely new user and personally I never even knew that cpak manager was a thing even though I grew up with the system

weary perch
#

OK

#

here's the new user experience in most cases

fair stump
#

I'm really not pushing for any changes

compact depot
#

I can smell the TLB bomb being dropped tomorrow! 😄

fair stump
#

Just trying to understand and explain it from a different user perspective

weary perch
#

load CPAK game 1. they have a fresh CPAK. works fine. they load another CPAK game. old save is still present. if the save is too big, most games say "not enough room on CPAK". so now they've been made aware there is already data on the CPAK and they can take appropriate action. format option in the menu, some games automatically take you to a manager

#

the alternative is autoformatting to a fresh one on booting a game with no extant .sav. issue there is if autosave is off and the user haven't manually saved, they've just lost data

#

the existing method does not risk data, so i agree with robert that it's the safer approach

fair stump
#

Yeah that makes sense to preserve the data. In my example with games that don't fill the pak you could end up with multiple on one and you'd just have to hunt down what you first played?

weary perch
#

if you have autosave on, you don't have to hunt

#

it will be saved to the .sav you created for the correct game

#

the only thing is there might be duplicates on some cpaks

fair stump
#

So .sav 1 would have game 1, .sav 2 would have game 1 and 2 potentially?

weary perch
#

yep

toxic pumice
#

I was wondering about all this, good to know.

fair stump
#

Ah then that makes more sense

weary perch
#

you can't switch games without opening the OSD, which will save if autosave is on

#

so the existing CPAK for game 1 will always be gucci

fair stump
#

I was afraid the second game would be back on the first pak but it could just be potentially accumulating forward with each game

weary perch
#

there is a small risk still, which you kind of alluded to

#

not all games warn you about CPAK space

#

in that case, if you go in, make progress and your CPAK is already full

#

RIP you

#

most games warn you, tho

#

if you want to avoid that, make sure you hold start on boot 🙂

fair stump
#

Cool, thank you very much for the explanation lodUp

weary perch
#

i'm super impressed with how well it works

#

CPAKs are very annoying on real hardware

#

prone to corruption, those controller pins are not great

#

if you use rumble you swap stuff in and out constantly, eventually those poor little paks are gonna give you "error, controller pak corrupted. repair? y/n" and half the time the repair doesn't work 🙃

latent galleon
#

yeah the rumble thing is oof

#

i hope there is a way to automate that at some point

#

i am pretty sure you could have both at once, maybe

compact skiff
#

It is annoying to have to switch between cpak and rumble all the time is certain games.

#

but I know that's a limitation of the original hardware.

latent galleon
#

i read only a handful of games actually check for the rumble pak, so they just trigger regardless

ironically i've never had a bluetooth controller that paired better or faster than the modkit...i so hate bluetooth

#

there is an open source wireless n64 project that doesn't work on mister, i'm not sure where to start looking, maybe shig could give me a hint

it pairs but no input

lament escarp

Second best option would be if 8bitdo adds xinput to the modkit via fw update, or the very least makes their own usb adapter compatible with switch mode. I also contacted them about it.

lament escarp
latent galleon

well it's a physical switch so that might not happen

Hmm, I wonder what's the barrier to the "perfect" category now. For most games, VI seems to work as intended. Are we waiting for cycle accuracy test and fixes now?

If you're in any way knowledgeable about driver stuff and want to give it a crack I'd be happy to help in any way I can. 😄

Even PSX isn't perfect, since a low level implementation of the CD system isn't practical

#

Maybe perfect should be better defined in the context of what can be expected

plush summit

We can nitpick all day, but I think if the core/game reaches a point where telling it apart from real hardware is splitting hairs, I think its good

Yeah I agree

Perfect would pretty much be when there is a consensus that the game requires no more work on part of the core, right?

weary perch
#

i wouldn't mark anything as perfect until all features are implemented (including TLB), at least one timing pass is done, and the game is effectively indistinguishable from hardware

latent galleon
#

i think most people are used to software emulation, where compatibility lists look more like dophin or yuzu or something...but with hardware you just implement everything, and any problems left over are problems of implementation, not resources

zenith orchid

I had a dream that the n64 database.txt file allowed you to redirect to a config input under each game to allow for different controls for specific titles 🤔

TLB's implementation may also impact existing performance

I do hope some care will eventually be given to hacks, partly because I'd like some performance patches, but also to help the hacking communities, there's a lot of fun stuff and I think it'd be nice if their stuff could be played on another platform

zenith orchid

N64 hacking has so much potential

latent galleon

what kind of care?

solemn marlin

There's completely new games almost

zenith orchid

There are so many games which don't use expanded ram, and maybe even DD capabilities can be utilized

latent galleon

mister has always supported non-dumb hacks, to summon my inner admin

solemn marlin
# latent galleon what kind of care?

Many of the performance patches do not work as intended, I guess those are the ones I haven't got working tbh, I wanted to play that only up one and that had a fps hack baked in so it didn't work

zenith orchid
#

When thinking about SA1 hacks for SNES, it really makes me think about the potential for N64 hacks

latent galleon
#

@solemn marlin i think that is a reflection of core maturity

#

there's no reason to think it won't behave exactly like a real console

zenith orchid

yeah, that's essentially the aim of every console core

I think newer ones are specifically made to work with original hardware tho, that one is, I guess that is why it's considered impressive to some degree

I was just looking into this. The official Linux kernel 5.16 has support for the switch battery information - expressed as Full, high, normal, low, and critical.... (Not as a percentage as far as I can see). I think when we updated the linux zImage, we get the kernel with this support....

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/hid/hid.git/diff/drivers/hid/hid-nintendo.c?h=for-next&id=900acbbe2552b17c80718d7247fb59b3c104a4ba

I did some more digging - when you connect a switch controller, it is mounted in /dev as hidraw*

You can query the device with bluetoothctrl

/root# bluetoothctl devices
Device 48:31:77:11:80:8E N64 Controller
Device 48:31:77:82:C3:11 N64 Controller
/root# bluetoothctl info
Device 48:31:77:11:80:8E (public)
    Name: N64 Controller
    Alias: N64 Controller
    Class: 0x00000508
    Icon: input-gaming
    Paired: yes
    Trusted: yes
    Blocked: no
    Connected: yes
    WakeAllowed: yes
    LegacyPairing: no
    UUID: Service Discovery Serve.. (00001000-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb)
    UUID: Human Interface Device... (00001124-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb)
    UUID: PnP Information (00001200-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb)
    Modalias: usb:v057Ep2019d0001

And finally, you can get the battery life by checking this directory (relative to each controller mac address)

/sys/class/power_supply/nintendo_switch_controller_battery_0005:057E:2019.0001/capacity_level
Normal

You can also get the status of the device (discharging, charging, etc.)
cat /sys/class/power_supply/nintendo_switch_controller_battery_0005:057E:2019.0001/status

Here are all the available files with info:

/sys/class/power_supply/nintendo_switch_controller_battery_0005:057E:2019.0001/
capacity_level device hwmon0 power powers present scope status subsystem type uevent

Now, someone just needs to write a nice script to display this info on the mister overlay 🙂
