JP excitebike 64 does have a pretty decent number of changes compared to USA, but no idea what would be causing it to freeze

So, the only game which should not freeze but does is Excitebike 64

#

man, Big Mountain 2000 is a really fun game but the progression/balance is so jacked up. if you do well and progress quickly, you'll get brickwalled at a certain point because you don't have the upgraded gear. then you just have to grind for awhile until the game gives it to you...

#

i guess they meant for you to fail repeatedly so you have more chances to grind

#

you kinda get punished for doing well šŸ˜„

#

nothing holds a candle to 1080, but i much prefer Big Mountain 2000 over Twisted Edge

#

mechanically, at least

#

there's a thing that happens in that game which i really need to check if it happens on original hardware, but it only really happens for a single frame so it's kinda hard to check. when something comes between the camera and the racer, the screen goes bonkers with striped green/purple lines. it's a blink and you miss it thing. just need to check if it happens on real hardware or not

Checked PJ64 for all the non-playable Japanese games (24 total).
There are no exclusives* in there crashing that do not require TLB.

A few minor differences that might be interesting?

  • Mario Story (aka Paper Mario) has a bit 5 PI error same as US, but unlike the PAL version. Doesn't show the thread error screen of the US version though
  • Ganbare Goemon - Dero Dero Douchuu Obake Tenkomori (aka Mystical Ninja 2 Starring Goemon) freezes on a BLACK screen after 2 logos, no errors flagged. PAL version has WHITE screen after the same 2 logos, with one of three different errors (0080050, 0080040, 0080005)

The only exclusive non-playable game with interesting behaviour is Nushi Zuri 64 (Japan), which doesn't have TLB.

@hollow rune Well spotted on the overworld map missing everthing. You might be interested to know the core does something better than PJ64. As of the DEV version a few weeks old, when text appears in the intro, everything outside the green dialog box goes BLACK. Core beating PJ64 on that front!

That's the one with the expansion Pak bug right?

No

#

Maybe

brisk edge
#

I think that fixes the expansion pak bug but not the collectible that was bugged

stiff condor
#

Oh ok that's what it was

rose elbow
#

i'm curious if Banjo Tooie is playable without expansion pak. im pretty sure the piracy hack for everdrive on that one requires the expansion pack. but im curious if the game is playable without expansion pack in a way that improves performance

stiff condor
#

I know there is a patch online to get the collectable

topaz otter
#

i got about halfway through it on release and realized that rare was doing

rose elbow
brisk edge
#

if tooie is like DK64 they might have been using the expansion pak for visual stuff. I saw it get brought up again the other day but that whole thing about DK64 having a last minute bug was not correct, the game just uses the expansion pak for lighting and stuff like that

topaz otter
#

artifically padding this game out with arbitrary backtracking to annoy me

rose elbow
#

yeaaaah but i need to see it. at least once in my life LOL

topaz otter

I'm with you there on tooie, that's why I didn't enjoy my 100% playthrough a few years ago

topaz otter

i need to finally beat it

absolutely killed my enthusiasm to play the game ever again lol

topaz otter

i was fine up until the train

rose elbow

the slow framerate is the icing on the cake lol

it is nice seeing an n64 game run in widescreen tho

chilly ember

I played through alot of tooie on the xbla version but I got bored and never finished it

topaz otter

yeah turning into the dinosaur was neat but the framerate was in the low digits

why is that game so grim! 😭 loool

Yeah, the general consensus is that BK is better than BT because stuff like this needlessly complicates the game. https://youtu.be/36wclKt4vdk

Boss Keys returns for a look at Rare's dynamic duo: Banjo-Kazooie. Their debut game was a standard collect-a-thon platformer with disconnected worlds, but the sequel is more of a Metroidvania with interconnected levels and backtracking. Let's dig in!

brisk edge

take it with a grain of salt but I don't recall from my tooie playthrough that the tooie quiz is as like stupidly specific

weary perch

brutal bit of the game there

rose elbow
#

tbh my method of getting thru the quiz was stocking up on 9 lives then going thru the quiz and picking random answers

#

exhaust the lievs

#

go back, get more lives

#

try again

topaz otter
rose elbow
#

eventually got through it lol

brisk edge
#

I wonder if the strategy guide covered all the question pools

rose elbow
brisk edge
#

cuz there's like 5 or 6? pools

rose elbow
#

so no guide is able to help you on that one lol

#

best method is just stock up on lives and bruteforce ur way through the quiz with random picks imo LOL

brisk edge
#

it is "random" but each playthrough is just picking from a pool of questions/trivia, it's not like 100% randomized, at least I don't recall that

rose elbow
#

thats correct ye

chilly ember
#

Now you're playing with power

weary perch
#

i guess that's part of Rare's charm, too. they were willing to go pretty far for a bit

#

having a quiz show about your game within your game seemed funny, so

rose elbow
#

it shouldve just been an optional thing and i'd be okay with it

brisk edge
#

I guess it's pretty devious, I've just played the game enough that I can kinda wing it lol

chilly ember
#

Rare always has to make those end levels a pain lol

#

Except conker, that one doesn't pull anything stupid

brisk edge

I dunno, War is pretty bullshit at times

topaz otter

i dont see anything in here about the quiz game what the hell

very helpful!

topaz otter

chilly ember

Throws the guide in the garbage

rose elbow

its also brutal cos if u get a question wrong, u lose a bit of health and have to do another random question

#

so getting question after question of these stupid questions u have no idea about lol

#

its absurd

chilly ember
#

I only finished that quiz once and never played through banjo kazooie to the end again

brisk edge
#

I've definitely done that quiz at least like...maybe 10 times

rose elbow
#

stocking up on lives and bruteforcing is the way to go

topaz otter
brisk edge
#

the real answer, just get some fuckin paper and pencils I guess

topaz otter
#

brentilda tells you the answers

brisk edge
#

maybe whatever route I took through the board only gave me a handful of questions so I just kinda breezed through it, or I prioritized the joker cards and cheesed through it

the entire game is full of characters rattling rhyms and cracking jokes

topaz otter

yeah, the collactathon complaints dont really hold true for banjo kazooie, it's just the quiz i really take issue with LOL otherwise it's a good game

brisk edge

you could probably skip the speed shoes and still get enough jiggies for the end

mellow raft
#

it does hold true for Banjo-Tooie though

topaz otter
#

I also have the strategy guide for turok 2 with a full map of the cave of the blind ones

rose elbow
brisk edge
#

easy to check that one with the game running at 2 FPS

#

no time limit there lol

chilly ember
#

Only n64 strategy guide i have is for conker's bad fur day. I got it as bonus for subscribing to nintendo power. I got it on the day i finished conkers bad fur day lol

brisk edge
#

I got my friend to playthrough BK a few years ago, I'm guessing I totally just did the quiz part for him or gave him the answers because I don't remember us getting stuck at all

rose elbow
#

i never got nintendo power but had some australian game mags, not sure if they were truly local or based off something else

brisk edge
#

we were on xbox

topaz otter
#

you pretty much have to have the guide for turok 2 because that game is impossible without it

chilly ember
#

I still have some nintendo power magazines but they're from the gc days

topaz otter
#

its a lot of backtracking through mazes with the same looking textures everywhere

brisk edge
#

didn't want him to deal with the note/death thing

#

kills it for a lot of new players

rose elbow
brisk edge
#

you know, losing your notes on death

topaz otter
#

deathnote

brisk edge
#

in the xbox version your notes are all saved

rose elbow
#

ohhhh

#

i was worried about that for most of my playthrough and it never became an issue funnily enough šŸ’Ŗ

brisk edge
#

it's mainly an issue in rusty bucket bay

#

and maybe click clock wood

rose elbow
#

and ticktock

brisk edge
#

yeah

#

rusty bucket bay is just a huge fuck you though lol if you don't do the engine room first

rose elbow
#

LOOL, my dyslexic ass already getting the name of a level wrong .. this is why i'm so bad at the quiz LOL

brisk edge
#

any new player is 100% gonna die there

topaz otter
#

this is why in rusty bucket bay you get the notes in the engine room FIRST

#

because of that spinning axel thing

#

you can fall off it and lose your notes

brisk edge
#

it's harder in US 1.1, Japan and Europe as well

rose elbow
#

yeah i think i had that happen to me in rusty bucket

brisk edge
#

in US 1.0, you can kind of stay on sloped surfaces

#

they patched that out though

rose elbow
#

LOL

brisk edge
#

so like with enough movements for example

#

the termite tower in the first level? you can get up it without transforming

rose elbow
#

that engine room had me raging

#

mildly raging

#

thats like, Peak Banjo Kazooie

#

coz if you die in the engine room, you have to then go to a room to hit a switch, and theres no enemies or anything in this route, its just knowing which room to go to

#

then backtracking, going to another room

#

hitting a switch

#

just to turn the blades off

#

and its like ?? how is this engaging gameplay

#

im not even doing anything lol

#

why do i have to have to hit buttons again for a room that has really difficult platforming

#

my god. banjo kazooie. love/hate relationship

brisk edge
#

it's like 85% golden

rose elbow

That one where you have to keep coming back to talk to people or whatever?

also reminds me, I was looking at an old Mario 64 guide from Japan, it was definitely released in like 96 and it details the BLJ stairs glitch. People must have found that glitch almost immediately

topaz otter

rose elbow
#

im pretty sure u still need to go out of ur way to hit the switch before tackling the engine room

topaz otter

rose elbow

maybe not necessary but falling in the pit insta-exhausts your health, so its nothing something i was wanting to be flashy with lol

I was also just obsessed with that as one of the big trivia things about the game, before we really knew much about project dream

topaz otter

Captain Blackeye was also meant to appear in the first version of Banjo-Kazooie, which was titled Dream: Land of Giants. He was expected to be the main antagonist in the game but it was never released due to slow development issues. In Banjo-Tooie, he commonly recites the words, I had a dream once... This is a reference to his role in Dream: Land of Giants, while 'a bear stole me glory' references how the game was reworked into Banjo-Kazooie, stripping Blackeye of his main villain role.

delicate hearth

we need to do a Mission Impossible raid on Tim Stamper's house

i love the fact that he has an actual n64 in his garage and just a stack of protos

brisk edge
#

I'd rather we hit something like copyright only lasts like 15 years and then you can just release all that and nobody can do anything legally

topaz otter
#

i wonder if one day he might make another company and have a team finish some of the old stuff like conker and try to re-release it

rose elbow
#

is it copyright, might be another word for it

#

i guess its copyright šŸ¤”

topaz otter
#

but there might be a legal thing with nintendo

rose elbow
#

yeah

brisk edge
#

I mean microsoft owns banjo and conker

#

it's not a mess like goldeneye was

topaz otter
#

before conker became a violent drunk and went off to war he was a sweet and gentle squirrel

rose elbow
brisk edge
#

too bad his gameboy game kinda sucks

#

I probably would have like twelve tales a lot, but, I can agree, it would have been kind of same-y with banjo already done

topaz otter
#

I was really excited for dinosaur planet, like ecstatic

#

but miyamoto messed it up

rose elbow
#

LOL yeah

#

the n64 build for that is infinitely more interesting

brisk edge
#

at this rate we're gonna have a pretty complete version of the game with all of that hack work being done right now

topaz otter
#

the dinosaur planet beta thing is exactly how I imagined it would look

rose elbow
#

that gamecube game is a weird cognitive dissnoance thing, it just feels wrong

topaz otter
#

the version I played crashed and the framerate was pretty bad

brisk edge
#

my major complaint is just that stuffing star fox into it feels so bizarre. I mean you could have used just fox, would have been a bit weird but ehh, I could let it slide

#

the whole crew and trying to tie it into that universe

#

always felt way too disparate

topaz otter
#

miyamoto is a madman lol

#

also the starfox wii u game is one of the worst games I've ever played

#

starfox zero?

rose elbow
#

really weird that one. would love to hear developers talk about that wii u game

brisk edge
#

yeah, we have a really bad habit of supporting the auteurs of the game design world as always hitting it out of the park or making the correct decisions but they can make just as shitty decisions as we all can lol

topaz otter
#

me and my brother played it in coop

cold pollen
#

Isn't that one supposed to actually be good?

topaz otter

literally everyone just wanted starfox 64 2

topaz otter

rose elbow

it had wii u/camera gimmicks baked into the game or something didnt it ?

topaz otter

but the controls are so clunky

#

they tried to make the levels kind of open world

delicate hearth
#

still nothing but wacky nonsense over BT though

brisk edge
#

nintendo pissed me off so much in the wii / wii u era. I understand that you want to push your control methods but why couldn't you also have a more standard control option

you could have both

the 3DS version was better

brisk edge

but that control method is just awful

rose elbow
#

yeahg

brisk edge
#

but why not do a proper HD port with the fixed controls

#

drives me up the wall

rose elbow
#

even tho it'd be like, tiny effort

brisk edge
#

you could easily just upscale DKR and it'd look fine

topaz otter
#

dont they make these mario games in a flash type program now?

#

they look like flash games

chilly ember
#

Diddy kong racing even had a prototype for xbox lol

brisk edge
#

I feel bad for any testers of DKR, I remember watching The Completionist talk about his 100% playthrough, he said it took around 90 hours. I can only imagine that amount of wrist damage that is

rose elbow
#

i also think i prefer the gameplay and level design in DKR over tropical freeze? maybe??

#

probably a hot take lol

topaz otter
brisk edge
#

I enjoy tropical freeze as a platformer, but as a successor to DKC outside the visuals it doesn't hit the mark for me

#

too slow

#

still a fun game but

#

a bit too slow

rose elbow
#

yeah it just .. it didnt quite click for me. hard to pinpoint why

#

but i enjoyed DKR way more

chilly ember
#

They're fun but i wish it was more like dkc

#

I never played much of diddy kong racing, just played mario kart instead lol

brisk edge
#

there's something that clicks in my goblin brain with just rushing through something like mario world or DKC, it just feels fast and fluid

rose elbow

eyy i'm not gonna disagree with this :D

brisk edge

probably the reason why I feel like returning to them every once in a while

dusty tusk
#

They thankfully later patched it

mellow raft
#

I played the latest version like 4 something years ago and it wasn't. You sure?

rose elbow
#

banjokazooie wiki has the note " (This does NOT work all the time. Sometimes it may make the notes disappear even if you have the latest patch and started a new game. So collect all the notes before you attempt the puzzle.) "

mellow raft
#

I'm talking the Xbox 360 Arcade release

rose elbow
#

unless this was written by you Nerd PorK ?

mellow raft
#

I just know I've tried it more recently and it still wasn't patched

rose elbow
mellow raft
#

I'm saying the same thing...

#

I'm personally saying they never patched it at all

#

not that bug anyway

rose elbow
#

that's also what im saying!

dusty tusk
#

Well they did patch it, but it can still happen. I was around when the patch went live back in the day. News to me that it wasn't fully fixed.

mellow raft
#

I agree but I think fixing 360 Arcade games is not on their drawing board at the moment

#

I'm curious to see where it was noted that they "patched" it

#

In my experience it's a guarantee if you do that puzzle BEFORE you go to the world

#

It's ruined like 2 of my playthroughs lol

#

(because I forget a lot xD)

rose elbow
#

i completely forgot about the mini game tbh until just now

dusty tusk
#

So it looks like it is fixed if you're using a save post patch.

mellow raft
#

hmmm I'm curious what it means by "saved before". I bought my 360 in like 2018 or 2019

dusty tusk
#

But because it's just the xbla version prior cloud saves stay bugged

mellow raft
#

I never had a 360 until then šŸ˜›

dusty tusk
#

I wonder if it's individual slots or the entire save

mellow raft
#

that was going to be my next question

#

I'm curious to test this again myself

brisk edge
#

I can 100% see why this bug slips by most people

#

I never do the bottles stuff until like right before grunty

#

that sucks though lol

#

also I bet the old save files weren't fixed because of the leaderboard

regal saffron
#

you have to use a snac/snax version of the core to get og n64 controllers to work right? just been rocking a ps5 the whole time but thought I might try it out

brisk edge
#

Unless you use the 8bitdo kit to convert your controller I believe

regal saffron
#

sorry, just saw the pin, October 4th, I might just wait, thats like using an old roman version of the core 😢

languid dune
#

Personally, I think the NSO N64 controllers work phenomenally well with the core.

regal saffron
#

im just being cheap, i kind of want an nso one but

languid dune
#

I'm still shocked by how well they mimmick the feel of the rumble pak too. It really feels like an OG rumble pak is in that thing.

chilly ember
#

Personally, I think the 8Bitdo kit works phenomenonally well with the core

brisk edge
#

I think with the ranges adjusted most of the clone controllers are working decently? I'm playing with an NSO controller as well so I haven't been following very closely

regal saffron
#

they actually have the nso in stock at the moment, its kind of tempting

chilly ember
regal saffron
#

nice

chilly ember
#

I still want a nso just to try

brisk edge
#

I do feel like I notice a hint of delay with the NSO controller, I don't remember where the actual measured delay sits now, might just be my brain. But I feel like I have to adjust sometimes to time really precise things correctly

#

But it feels so comfy I don't mind

latent galleon
#

i feel the same way about 8bitdo kit so

rose elbow
#

8bitdo kit just connectcs via bluetooth/usb?

chilly ember
#

Yes

rose elbow
#

kinda curious in that coz ive got some old controllers that work mostly fine except for the joystick and they just sit there

chilly ember
#

That's why i got my 8bitdo kits

#

They were gonna sit there even more with the core existing too

rose elbow
#

yuup

#

but also im pretty happy with the nso controller. but im curious to try it !

chilly ember
#

Hall effect stick for the mario party games to not have to worry lol. Not that i play those much but it's nice to not have to worry about the stick getting worn out

rose elbow
#

but also have to imagine there'll be an 8bitdo controller coming out at some point with the analogue announcement šŸ‘€

chilly ember
#

Maaaybe

rose elbow
#

im guessing same parts

#

unless its like contractually tied or something lol

#

šŸ™

chilly ember
#

I'll buy it when it/if it comes out in 2025 when people start receiving their consoles

rose elbow
#

come on 8bitdo, target mister and double dip

chilly ember
#

They better release a translucent model

rose elbow
chilly ember
#

Yea it wouldn't be their first time so why not

#

I put my 8bitdo kit in an atomic purple shell and i love it so it sounds like a great idea

rose elbow
#

ye i take back what i said earlier, i dont think theres any instances where an 8bitdo controller has been tied to an analogue product except for some colour variations maybe

chilly ember
#

Curious if it will actually happen though, they might be okay with that modern version that's in the analogue promo

rose elbow
#

generally i still prefer the 3 prong layout over the modernized 2 handed n64 modern controllers .. but i'll still get it i think lol

chilly ember
#

N64 feels wrong to me if its in a modern layout. I can do it fine but I would rather have the original layout. Too much nostalgia maybe

rose elbow
#

with mister and button mapping tho it should be interesting

#

could be a nice controller with 2.4g šŸ™

chilly ember
#

Everyone wants to play the shooters on n64 with the dpad to move and right stick to aim. I'm right handed but i got so used to playing with c sticks to move and left hand on the stick to aim as a child that dpad feels wrong

rose elbow
#

aha

#

tbh same

#

altho i am curious to try out the 2 controller methods

chilly ember
#

N64 wonky controls. I blame conkers bad fur day for my moving control preference because that game doesn't give you an option to change it

rose elbow
#

heres an example of 8bitdo doing a colour variation that only works with original controller adapter.

latent galleon
#

@rose elbow you can rebuild the joysticks really cheaply

#

i have the hall effect but am using the original is all i will say

zinc dawn
#

For some reason I can't get the 8bitdo n64 controller diy kits shipped to UK.

#

Says my address is incorrect

#

What a load of crap.

#

Anyone reccomended a decent n64 to usb controller adapter?

tidal zenith

polar raft

2P adapter:

zinc dawn
#

Thanks guys

#

I think I'll go with the raphnet 1

storm vessel
#

+1 for the Raphnet adapter. Works well.

bitter copper
#

any news on a n64 snac adapter?

chrome quest
#

Raphnet working great, even gets Rumble Paks working on the core

versed cairn
zinc dawn
#

Awesome. Going to get those kitch bent parts for rejuvenation

#

Second question on the list...TLB how far along is it on the priority list? This may sound odd but Goldeneye is the only game I ever really play. Been playing it every year since its release.

brisk drum
#

TLB is last on the list .. I believe Robert wants to implement everything possible before moving on to Tlb

daring meteor
#

I think 64DD is lower in the list than TLB

zinc dawn
hot spoke
#

Do we have a definitive TLB games list? Mario Tennis doesn't boot but is for example not on Vampier's list

daring meteor
#

Every non booting game that isn't Jet Force Gemini or Banjo Tooie

#

Simple

hot spoke
#

If we have come this far that we only have copy protection and TLB left then great!

daring meteor
#

I wouldn't be surprised if Robert tackles it after some RDP and VI work at this point

zinc dawn
#

Goldeneye
, Perfect Dark (unpatched) I think maybe Conker... pretty much Rare games.

#

Shadow Man and Turok 2 are worth mentioning .

vapid hawk
#

also you know, mario64

#

some people like it

#

i've heard its ok

zinc dawn
#

Yeah I've heard of that

vapid hawk
#

bit of a hidden gem

zinc dew
#

Banjo Kazooie > Super Mario 64

zinc dawn
#

I only ever Play GE. Maybe Turok if I'm feeling adventurous.

zinc dew
#

Perfect Dark > GoldenEye

vapid hawk
#

i fired up this weird game yesterday, now i've forgotten the name of it lol

#

it reminded me of echo knight
