A shame that the patch for widescreen F-Zero X that doesn't stretch the 2D assets doesn't work. Not a huge deal, but that would have been 
All it needs is a built in dithering disabled. So I don't have to turn it back on when I switch it to other games. F-Zero X really doesn't suffer from color banding

N64 only supports anamorphic wide screen. So the 2D assets would have to be squished first, which will make them look worse when stretched

I play on a 4:3 crt most of the time so I probably won't use much of the widescreen patches but the option is cool
Truth be told, the low res anamorphic widescreen of N64 games (and PS1 games via that core's OSD) never really looked good to me. Anamorphic widescreen really only starts to look good when getting into 480p territory in my opinion. Seeing those stretched out pixels and detail loss just doesn't do it for me. F-Zero X is one of the few examples that I think works well because that game moves so fast and doesn't have much detail to begin with.
I didn't try any of the patches from that YouTube channel. I believe they're just gameshark codes in a patch for widescreen

Playing Saturn right now, and it just doesn't do it for me like N64 or even Playstation does. It leaned too hard into the Arcade type of games
Saturn really shines with shmups
And fighting games.
For that generation of consoles, it's Saturn>PS1>N64 for me personally.

It does. Because the pixel density is dramatically lessened.

That seems to be the respective strengths. I think I need to go into Saturn games like I would when starting a game challenge or when playing an arcade game, but my brain isn't always ready for that when I think console
N64 is really a party system
but it also was a scale and scope system. The other two cannot create the vast spaces found in B&K, Mario, Zelda and the others
i think n64 has better fps games overall than psx
When comparing them to one another I don't think people emphasize that enough
FFVII creates epic moments. Zelda Majora's Mask has epic spaces
both are valuable

Wild Arms was the first game I played on my PSX back in the day

both consoles had unique strengths and that meant that they both have excellent but different games tailored to those strengths

With PSX you can get true widescreen since all games use the same GTE, and its hackable. But most N64 games use unique RDP microcode

I think in master difficulty you really gotta use risky stunts to skip parts of some of the tracks
The original is one of my favourite racing games of all time, fully completed the snes version on master

Yeah so it seems with CRT simulation, the difference is not as noticeable, but still there
Will always pretty much be the same results. Filters just make it a bit less noticeable by blurring the image.
I'm not really a huge fan of the SNES game but X and GX are pretty fun
Now go and beat FZero GX on the hardest difficulty
maybe that's why it seemed like a worthwhile tradeoff for games that natively supported it. On CRTs you would really have to look to see the difference

if you're especially motion sickness sensitive, it definitely could. 60 fps, and a lot of upside-down, loop-de-loops etc
You probably won't get far in GP mode, but it's worth a try. then I would say do practice mode, and try to beat your record lap a few times before moving on to the next track. When you feel confident to give GP another try, go for it 👍
Just keep that barf bag handy and you'll be allll good!
I find the rapid-fire side shifting a great technique
instead of using the airbrakes, just keep smashing that trigger to take the turn
And don't forget to use the trigger buttons to help with the sharp turns
yeah but side-shifting takes a lot more coordination
In all seriousness, I don't think it'll be a problem. At least for me, first-person shooters and some VR games are the only types of games that have ever given me motion sickness.
i've not had motion sickness in vr for a while now, i think i've got used to it entirely
Yeah, side-shifting is a more advanced technique. I recommend newcomers to mostly stick to the basics before getting too far into stuff like that.
Its mostly FPS that makes me motion sick but for some odd reason Vectorman does it too?

Easiest method to cover all sorts of mods is use the latest unstable MiSTer, and use the "new" database file (which must be renamed to "N64-database.txt");

That way you don't need to manually add the hash to your database file for each mod (which you could do if you don't want unstable MiSTer, but the new database is far more convenient IMO)

@prisma ivy The way I approach it is I first practice navigating the track comfortably without colliding. second I try to hit the most boosters on the track consistently. then finally I maximize use of the booster power while also hitting all the booster pads on the track
that latency part in the new unstable - does that apply to any controller for n64?? if so huge

You can save to controller Pak but it's not needed, cart uses eeprom and it allows for 4 save slots

Can anyone confirm that there’s a bug (likely with dither) that makes a repeated pattern in things like the sky box?
Even with dedither on, I can see it slightly. It looks just like the bug you get in a convolutional filter logic design when somethings off (repeating pattern every n pixels where n is likely the size of the window). Is that what the actual N64 had?

Okay found an easier one to replicate, on OOT title screen after the short video plays of the greudo and it fades back to the normal epona galloping, the sky makes the pattern.

Dedither can't completely remove all dithering. You can see some patterns on real hardware too, especially if you're using anything better than composite.

but keep in mind that the new database will be overwritten by update_all.sh if there is a new regular database update
the game simply doesn't use dedither at all. I generally turn off dithering with that game, as it doesn't seem to suffer from color banding
Did someone else also notice, that on a CRT there is some issues with the picture? I noticed it in the Intro of Diddy Kong Racing that the blue sky when the picture is fading looks like a stain is there for a short time.

might be a placebo but latency feels a bit better with the NSO controller on the new build
As far as I understood analog out is a bandaid solution right now.
If its mister unstable it should be slightly worse

was thinking of getting one but then realised I'd also need to buy adapters for both N64 and GC. It makes it a bit pricey for mine. I'll probably just stick with my 2 NSO controillers, which cost about the same as that adapter + cables 😄

worth remembering it's file name will likely not be the same as the database.txt file, so changing that will likely save you a headache when the time comes

Not sure if it’s already reported, but sm64 with face patch, I got 120 stars and only one crash the whole time (audio went out of sync then shortly after a crash, it was in the first bowser level)

Keep in mind the core by Robert is technically not the first time an FPGA Nintendo 64 has been attempted. There was another proof of concept Nintendo 64 running on FPGA a long time ago.

I bought the Mega SG, but found that it does not run Master System games very well, at least Batman Returns lags quite a bit in the later levels with waterfalls. The Pocket seems pretty good so far, but I sure am happy about the OpenFPGA feature or it would not have been much of a device

There is always a place for both, i don't see any issue with that. The analogue consoles are convenient and for a different audience. If at all, it will make mister and other platforms stronger, due to more people looking into it

OpenFPGA on the Pocket is a great concept I think, no problem with that since its always open about where the source comes from and such. But if mazamars made a deal with Analogue then that is great I think. His work does seem very much in the same line of design and concept as other Analogue consoles. I wont be getting one, N64 was never that big a deal for me, but it certainly has some interesting game and I love seeing it happen on the MiSTer 🙂

As long as Analogue ist not ripping off anybody, giving the real developers a cut , and credit all involved there is nothing to object them releasing an N64 FPGA console. Most here are probably on alert because in the past, there has been a lot of plagiarism and ripping of the open source community, especially in the retro community. Fingers crossed this time its different.

Robert is trying to mimmick real N64 as much as possible. So no higher resolutions than normal.
"Support for 4K" just means the FPGA can output 3840x2160, they'll probably add some 4K filters like the ones that exists through Retroarch or on the Mister itself just at a higher resolution
