# bronze cliff 😂

do you know how many forum posts out there where people get nasty every time someone brought up the possibility that someone would try to tackle an n64 core? lol

rose elbow
#

i was doing this last week out of curousity/boredom lol

#

searching redddit posts on this very topic

#

n64 is never coming sorry

zinc dew
dreamy ridge
#

can't tell you bro. every few months i would randomly search what new cores were being developed and it was a really consistent trend i noticed

rose elbow
#

i think it's just reactionary coz the questoins would normally come from people who don't have a mister and that line of thinking about "can it do x?" as opposed to looking at what it can do annoys people LOL

cerulean elk
#

I put up a community post on YT today…about my normal life…not gaming life. Three held comments already from people saying one form or another “I’m glad she died”…so yeahhhhhhh

rose elbow
#

there was a thread on the reddit just today about the cost of mister and i posted what i paid in 2019 and had people argueing with me "no you didnt" 🤷‍♂️

cerulean elk
#

Lol people suck. Final conclusion. Submit it to the journals

Specially considering the state of N64 software emulation to this day

rose elbow
#

can u block people on youtube? would be sick to just say like "ok, bye. ure banned from watching my videos with comments like that" LOL

cerulean elk
#

I do all the time

sonic kiln
#

People like feeling superior to others by correcting them. Good thing the “smart” people were proven wrong this time. Although I would never have entertained the possibility of an N64 core myself

rose elbow
#

yeah i didnt think it was possible

#

not that i know anything, but i just was trying to set expectations for myself hehe

cerulean elk
stuck summit
#

I always thought I'd be stuck using real hardware for the foreseeable future. Software emulation just wasn't a very good alternative

rose elbow
#

you definitely need a thick skin for putting content up like that on youtube

stuck summit
#

I guess it's improving now but it's still not quite there for me. Too many timing errors, some games still run too fast etc

rose elbow
#

the comments must be maddening but maybe u can get used to it and learn to laugh at it

Recorded my first video with the N64 core. MK64 with a CRT cam to show the dual 1440p/analog output already possible on the core. My first time trying it on CRT and it worked flawlessly 🤩

@stuck summit You can with hot air from a good distance only in the RCP (I recommend protecting the other components), Only if the recap doesn't work

sonic kiln
#

My symptoms are sometimes the system reboots after 10 mins of intense gameplay. I think it was the power supply but not sure.

#

Being loose in there

#

This was after recap tho

little bane
sonic kiln
#

I think it’s not the psu failing it’s the contacts not connecting and being loose

#

People talked about putting some tape or card stock on the outside where it fits in and that’s mostly worked for me

sonic kiln

No the connection between the psu and the system

#

I feel like I've gotta be missing something simple here 🤔 I've been trying to get this to work for a while, and can't seem to get anything besides a black screen and controller mappings when booting into the N64 core. I've manually copied the files over from the site, I've tried using the update_n64 script a few times, and I've tried a few different boot.rom files. But no matter what I do, I get a black screen after selecting the N64 core.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

#

I have a question regarding the database thing

amber saffron

See above

teal oyster

is this merely a tool that we are using as a "band aid", and eventually the core will be so mature that it will not be needed?

mortal panther

solid crest
mortal panther
#

Could have the core default to a particular CIC type if it's a custom/patched ROM... that is, if most custom/patched ROMs expect a particular CIC.

teal citrus
#

I wonder how Kaze's SM64 rom hacks even run on the core!

Usually he uses certain trick hacks that usually works only on software-based emulation.

Unless he has lately being making his hacks OG hardware-compatible.

teal oyster
#

well, I loaded up a patched super mario 64 rom, and it said "no database entry" or something, and yet it still worked...

#

so I dunno

#

I guess it will just default to some setting if it's not found

native mesa
teal oyster
#

makes sense

solid crest
hearty oar
#

this has probably been explained elsewhere, but does anyone know how software emulators avoid the need for a database file? Do they?

mortal panther
#

Yeah, maybe the core already does that. I know I've changed the CIC value, saved settings after making changes elsewhere, and it chose that one on next core boot.

#

Yoshi’s Story looks great until gameplay

quasi storm
#

Does the maintainer have access to a log, or something?

hexed knot
#

There's a version history. I can see who did it, but there's a lot of edits after the change. If I were to revert it before that version, that's lots of lost data.

quasi storm
#

Like I said, it looks more organized now. Will it keep sorting when status is changed? I'm guessing not.

paper orchid
#

I had to deal with people resorting a sheet back when I had to deal with Google Sheets at work

quasi storm
#

Just for the record. I know it sounds like it was me, but it wasn't... 😆

paper orchid
#

The only suggestion I can offer is: if you can get the sheet back into the original order, add an ID column and just assign starting from 1

#

When someone sorts the sheet, resort it by that ID column

quasi storm
#

They were just alphabetical before, just resort it?

paper orchid
#

If it's just alphabetical order then yeah, basically that

quasi storm
#

I'm wondering if someone didn't fully realize the scope of their change.

paper orchid
#

Oh actually, I wish I knew about this

#

Basically: add a hidden column that's all empty and restrict the permission. When a person goes to sort it, it forces them into a local filter instead of a global sort for all users

hexed knot
#

I'm unsure how to sort multiple rows, if someone knows and would like to try to revert it, go for it.

#

I don't want to mismatch the rows/columns.

quasi storm
#

Welp... imma run through it and remove all the trailing Es. I thought I heard someoneention it would be better for data.

#

Alright. Imma try it. Wish me luck...

paper orchid
#

If you start the selection in column A I believe it'll have you use that as the "key"

hexed knot
#

Looks good, thanks!

paper orchid
#

As a heads-up

quasi storm
#

I think it's sorted. Just long pressed the column on mobile, and sorted a-z. The rest went with it

paper orchid
#

Don't start at A1 (the header)

#

The header on the USA sheet went down to row 83

#

Or if you do select all of them for the range, there's uhh

#

Click the advanced option instead of one of the two

#

Then click "Data has header row", and it should say "Sort by Game"

quasi storm
#

Reverted. I'm at work 😆

paper orchid
hexed knot
#

Good to know.

paper orchid
#

Should be sorted now with the header

quasi storm
#

Just saying I have limited time to dick with it in one chunk

#

I tried. When it went pear shaped I threw my hands up 🤣

paper orchid
#

I'm on an iPad so it's a bit of a pain to deal with, on my end, otherwise I'd resort all these

iron trail
#

Oh wow this is really neat, thank you

hexed knot
#

oh my god they've all been sorted like that?

paper orchid
#

Yeahhhh, at least from what I can see

quasi storm
#

Dude, I'm on freaking android.

paper orchid
#

Well then! 🤣

#

I don't blame you for not wanting to mess with it then

quasi storm
#

"freaking night shift. Screwing up the databases.."

paper orchid
#

But yeah, I think if we shove a column somewhere in the middle of the sheet e.g. between game title and status, then permissions set to prevent anything in that column from being modified, I think that'll force any sorting to be as a temp filter on the user's end

hexed knot
#

Alright, the affected sheets have been reverted back to alphabetical.

Brawler 64 NSO Bluetooth controller + Mayflash MAGIC-S Ultimate pairs and works, but analog stick's range is huge (-127 to 127 along each axis) according to the tester ROM. Feels okay in Mario 64 but feels overly sensitive in Hexen. Would the pinned message about a custom Linux image/driver for NSO apply to my situation, given that the Mayflash (rather than normal Bluetooth) is what's handling all the wireless connectivity? Any other way to adjust the analog stick sensitivity?

hearty oar
ebon oyster
#

Clamping the range won't change sensitivity though, right? Just caps the min/max values?

hearty oar
#

no, it should fix the sensitivity, it's not just a simple clamp, but rather yeah a range shrink

#

also yeah it has whatever commits from when they built it lol - the version in the pinned post should be somewhat recent

lone geyser
#

It does both

ebon oyster
#

Where can I find the code diff? I can build it against HEAD of Main_MiSTer myself.

regal prism
#

n64 snax is in development

#

that or it's snac i don't remember off the top of my head

#

Until that comes you can probably just find some cheap adaptor

#

As a sort of hold-over

hearty oar
noble ember
#

@hearty oar yea I saw. Wondering about latency

hearty oar
#

willing to bet it is excellent, but yeah no data unfortunately

#

there is also the Reflex-adapt from MisterAddons, but that is currently out of stock afaik

topaz otter
#

the latency is still gonna be less than what you'd have playing it on an emulator + xbox controller + pc + LCD screen

#

which is really the worst way to play it as far as response time goes

hearty oar
#

you can also try the Raphnet adaptor, which also has a DIY version apparently

#

so yeah, a few options out there

noble ember
#

@hearty oar yea I actually considered the Reflex

lone geyser
#

That makes it correct for 2 wedges but still leaves 6, haha

weary palm
#

Have you thought about keeping track of the biggest radius given by the joystick and normalizing that to 96?

#

Like having an initial max set to like 48 or something.

lone geyser
#

That binary does something similar, actually but it's just a binary threshold at 110

weary palm
#

That would allow scaling of pretty much any joystick, regardless of restrictor and range.

lone geyser
#

It would also add some float point operations but that's not the biggest deal

#

I'm taking advantage of the fact that 127 - (127 >> 2) = 96

onyx minnow
#

duke nukem 64 works well now, the sprites visible behind walls is fixed

weary palm
#

Yes, that's how you do 0.75×something with integers

#

You could do outX = (x << 7) / maxRadius or something. No floating point necessary

#

Or rather (x << 7 - x << 5) / max

#

I don't think floating point is that taxing, anyways. It's not a 6502 we're talking about here.

vapid hawk
#

the fpu on the arm is probably more idle than the alu anyway

wanton sun
#

my development methods for ps1 and n64 are mostly similar. I looked more in the n64 core for logic usage and tried to keep it small, but that's about it. However, there are plenty of things i wish i had done different for other cores, e.g. GBA, but it's to late now. Maybe some day i tackle it again.

wanton sun
zealous hull
#

I have a CRT--a small cheap one from my childhood--most of the appeal of the actual picture is drowned out by the incessant ringing. Perhaps that's just because it was cheap?

#

So--I prefer HDMI. There are a lot of perks choosing to forgo a CRT.

zealous hull
#

No worries either way, of course.

wanton sun
#

i played n64 on a ~50cm CRT and i don't want to complain about it. I was lucky as teenager i had my own TV. Still, i was barely able to read text on it if it was smaller, because it was so blurry. I don't want to get back to that

wanton sun
zealous hull

That's more than fair. I was just curious. Regardless--I'm far far more excited about this core than I could ever be for link cable capabilities. I just finished another session of Mario Kart 64. chefkiss

regal prism

lone geyser
# weary palm Or rather (x << 7 - x << 5) / max

Good stuff right here. I just like optimization, haha. I've tried to avoid float point operations out of a naive assumption that they're more difficult/expensive to implement in FPGA, which I think is the most likely place for the code in the end

orchid nimbus
#

I think my hearing drops of at 12K hz now

I have a constant rining in my ears anyway

#

i put a small cotton ball in my right ear

rose elbow
#

i get the occassional ringing that lasts like ~10 seconds. i always figured that was something different than what people refer to as tinitus but quick google says its tinitus 🤷‍♂️ heh

dusty tusk
#

For me, the beauty of CRTs is purely from a technical standpoint. It fascinates me in the way old trains and pinball table mechanisms all work together

rose elbow
#

does that involve using them and looking at them?

#

i love cranking the brightnes super high and playing SMB1 for example, or any fast paced game against a black backdrop. like in SMB1 underground levels when the light ghosting is really noticable. it's soooo pleasing on the eyes 😍

dusty tusk
#

Both. Physical parts moving around is neat

#

I swear I remember hearing about a potential almost eink like television format that allows for pixels to be an arbitrary size, that would be neat

ebon oyster
rose elbow
#

i definitely love CRT's for all the CRT-y flaws and unique qualities. and just on an earlier comment on text being illegible or blurry. using RGB or SCART kinda inputs on a Trinitron or nicely maintained good quality CRT is definitely like.. completely different experience with what i grew up with.

dusty tusk
#

Honesty for as much as people harp on about scanlines and shadowmasks, my recent jvc with component in was very subtle with either effects

#

I think it's why I prefer scanline filters that only exist when you look long enough

hearty oar
#

it's the motion clarity for me, the closest we can get to that with current sample and hold displays is BFI and there are obviously issues with brightness that you need to then work around

#

also yeah totally agree, on my 800tvl PVM the scanlines are surprisingly subtle and just fade away when you are playing

rose elbow
#

i had concerns that like, getting a really nice CRT with nice inputs might bypass some of the effects i was wanting to get or it might be "too clean and pristine" but nope. nice CRTs are very nice 😅

dusty tusk
#

My next TV will likely be an oled for convenience, and those get pretty close, but there's small things about CRTs that don't get mentioned much. Like how images that fade to and form black also have the image shrink or grow as well

rose elbow
#

yeah

#

all this talk of CRTS and how much i love them. one of the 2 i got is currently out of service and it's too big for me to bother getting repaired atm

My favorite loading related thing is Eternal Darkness on GameCube. If you listened to the console as you approached a door, you could hear it loading the next area.

the problem is if the devices you're playing on don't have native h265 then transcoding has to happen and if your media server doesn't have hardware 265 decoding then it is more intensive to transcode

mortal panther

It really boils down to the ability of the clients you will be using to decode x265 content, not the server... unless it normally does a lot of transcoding anyway... which itself is not good and should be an indicator that you should probably not consider that route.

If you're not doing subtitle burn-in and the devices can decode it then H265/x265 should be fine

Thanks to the peeps who fixed the ordering on the sheet, I've hopefully put a lock on so they (hopefully) can't be reordered again on the actual sheet

"dirtect play" works if the clients can decode h265. With plex some client configs are fugged and there's other such matters that might force encode anyway.

mortal panther
#

I've shared my Plex library out to several friends and family members since upgrading. No issues now. Everything is wide open... no limits.

elfin relic
#

ime plex really likes to transcode even in cases where it shouldn't need to

mortal panther
#

(figures everything will get back on-topic once a new build drops, so not too worried about contributing) 😏

elfin relic
#

subtitles are why I switched to jellyfin

#

no longer burning in subs when there is no god damn need

paper orchid
#

I have to do burn-in at the moment because Plex has some broken fonts lmao

elfin relic
#

anyway I played Custom Robo today and it was pretty dang perfect except battle scenes don't load any textures for the battle ground

#

it was nice to see that sin & punishment's subtitles are done proper now instead of black on black

I've got a recording someone did of a playthrough on N64, I did a recording recent-ish but as more things are getting fixed I may wait a bit longer

How are you guys playing your S&P? Are you using the original Japanese rom or is there an decent English patch somewhere?

paper orchid
#

Original JP ROM

elfin relic
#

original Japanese

paper orchid
#

The game's story is all English spoken so it's just learning the menus

elfin relic
#

even if you don't know Japanese, you just gotta know to hit the most upper right menu item to start the game

mortal panther
#

Ah, didn't know that. May check it out then.

elfin relic
#

that one

paper orchid
#

Upper right is difficulty

mortal panther
#

Left is right.

elfin relic
#

look just get bonus

paper orchid

Lemme actually grab a photo of the menu, I can ID everything

elfin relic
#

I think someone ported the Wii vc whatever's into a real patch

mortal panther
#

lol

drowsy lantern
#

What difficulty are you recommending for a first-time player?

elfin relic
#

the default, which is easy

paper orchid
#

Start Easy, then go to Normal

#

The top-right here shows "Easy" (iishii)

orchid nimbus
#

Vivid Dolls seems to be running but I can't get out of that menu or control the menu

knotty zealot
#

you seem to be running

paper orchid
#

So starting top-left going down, Start/Continue, Training, Ranking, Scene Select (level/cutscene), back to title on the left, OPT for unlockables on the right

orchid nimbus
#

go Seagull yourself @knotty zealot

#

you crazy Norwegian troll 😄

drowsy lantern
#

Thanks guys!

knotty zealot
paper orchid
#

On the top-right: difficulty (Easy and Normal by default), audio (stereo/mono), controller options, then I think bottom right is clearing the save

native mesa
#

Are you the red letter media guy?

paper orchid
#

In the controller options: normal/reverse for aiming on the left I believe? (invert), crosshair lines on the right

#

I'm not gonna decode all three controller layouts but that should be "enough" to figure out the game

#

Suggestion, do the training to see what things do

cerulean elk
paper orchid

Training is heavy on the Japanese but basically it's "here's a button, push it"

It is

eternal island

marble cargo

Sin & Punishment is one of those games where the controls look confusing, but make more sense once you spend a little bit of time on it.

mortal panther
#

The only reason no one else has used that configuration is because they are afraid of getting sued by Nintendo. That's the only reason. 😉

#

Everyone else is just mad that Nintendo came up with it first.

paper orchid
#

With an actual N64 controller though, oh man it feels so good

marble cargo
paper orchid
#

Right, which I'll agree with you there. C "stick" works fine for some but in S&P it's a bit painful, especially when also trying to sort the whole "L/R vs. Z" deal

#

I have an 8bitdo ultimate as a standby controller, so standard Xbox-ish layout, analog triggers

#

Z on those analog triggers for S&P is not good

mild ether
#

It's got to be the most awkward controller that ever came with a console. I didn't think so in the 90s but now I certainly do.

night saddle
#

yeah its tough. would need something with dual bumper buttons and 6 face buttons, with an analog stick.

paper orchid
#

Ideally something like LB for jump, RB for shoot, the face buttons for the C buttons, then...triggers for A/B because usually you'll never hit those during S&P rofl

#

(auto-lock is useful in some cases but you get to a point where you avoid using it, it's a bit clunky in general)

#

It works off this weird thing where you switch to auto-lock, then you tap the stick in the direction of the thing you want to lock onto

#

Holding it can often cause the auto-lock to say "oh you don't mean that target, fine then"

I certainly hear you but that might have been more to do with your signal than the TV. If you ever get the chance check out a RGB signal on a half decent CRT its immeasurably clearer than what I played in my 80s bedroom. A tube gives a very distinctive look that really does give a different look to pixel artwork. Mind you as you're in the niche position of being a developer I can understand the desire/need for using a razor sharp LCD/OLED when debugging.

Oh absolutely but this is possible nowadays and will be very possible on this core. It really is night and day playing these old games on CRTs vs modern LCDs/OLEDs. I know it sounds a bit 'snobbish' but it really is IMO but you shouldnt put up with the blurry signals we put up with back then - its partly why the N64 was seen as a vaseline factory that happened to play games (Im joking, Im joking - I loved mine!)

Yeah i mean, looking at the old display modes on PCs back in the day... CGA was it, the weird horrible one where everything looks either pink or blue... but basically if you ran on the display it was intended for, it kinda auto mixed stuff to create more colors. Really interesting how people got around limitations. but yeah in the case of some of these old systems, haha my memory of the graphics is like... oh... on an moden display it looks kinda pants... it used to look so much smoother.
