Ah, memories.

mossy needle
#

I put the right bios in the games folder, the thing from vampier, the rbf file and the games in the right place, when I load a game that is known to work it goes to black screen

#

I put the new unstable mister as well

chilly ember
#

Did you get the txt file?

mossy needle
#

Yes

#

Also in the n64 games file

chilly ember
#

Hmm not sure, i know some people have had issues but i don't want to claim to be the expert

#

Some games you have to set the cic

mossy needle
#

Wait I might be dumb. I definitely mixed and matched things between the sd card and ssd

chilly ember
mossy needle
#

Let me get them all on sd

chilly ember
#

Less points of failure

#

Good idea

mossy needle
#

I forget this is still on like pre pre pre alpha

chilly ember
#

Yea but you can still finish super mario 64 with glitches with the no face hack. There are patches now that have all the levels unlocked tho

#

In the pins if you want that

mossy needle
#

I saw that! It's absolutely amazing how fast this core has been moving

chilly ember
#

Its pretty impressive

mossy needle
#

Mister has kinda made it easier for me to start consolidating my collection

random portal
#

same, I invested in a Pioneer LaserActive with the Sega Genesis PAC which I later sold to get a MiSTer.

wanton sun
#

really, no. I was testing my usual suspects and other than Bomberman Hero didn't found anything that improved a lot. Of course the channel proves me otherwise. You find everything here within hours

vapid hawk
#

i wish i had an overnight test crew with this kind of enthusiasm at work

mossy needle
#

And I was under the impression retro gaming people didn't care much for the n64

chilly ember
#

Nintendo people tho

random portal
#

N64 was a seller. It's just that in hindsight, it kind of didn't have as many actual heavy hitters unless you ask Nintenbros.

vapid hawk
#

i never really thought that made sense, look how many hdmi mods, flash carts, controllers etc are still getting made for it

trim seal
#

Rampage 2 World Tour - now quite playable. Black frame on the sprites and sound sparkles but you can play it.

vapid hawk
#

someone is spending a lot of money on n64 still to this day

random portal
trim seal
mossy needle
#

Definitely one of my more expensive consoles with all the controllers and stuff I own next to gamecube

chilly ember
#

N64 was the party 4 player console that alot of people have fond memories for

mossy needle
#

I'm hoping for Snax support if it's not already there so I can use my hori pad

chilly ember
#

It's there, just not offically yet. they're still working out bugs ish

random portal
trim seal
chilly ember
#

I'm not sure if anyone that has been testing the core lately has been getting alot of sleep lately anyways

trim seal
lament escarp
#

So how many render modes do we have now all in all?

mossy needle
#

I'm still getting a black screen when loading mario kart 64 and not sure why

trim seal
mossy needle
#

Yup

random portal
#

super wierd

trim seal
#

Boot rom correct?

mossy needle
#

Yes

orchid nimbus
#

boot rom is 2kb

#

if it's bigger then LOL

mossy needle
#

Let me check

chilly ember
#

I hear the aleck 64 boot rom works too if there's any issue with that

orchid nimbus
#

I use that too

chilly ember
#

Not what i'm using so i can't say but thats what the word is

mossy needle
#

It's 2kb

orchid nimbus
#

it's even listed in the 4 BIOS sha1s

random portal
#

but I saw it referenced a bunch

trim seal
#

Actually forget what I said about sound in Rampage 2 - the sparkles were my power supply cable laying across some other cables it shouldn't have been. Sound is great

chilly ember
#

It's the easier one to find

orchid nimbus
mossy needle
#

I got the database, the boot.rom, and the games in there

orchid nimbus
#

you're the 2nd one who claims they have done everything right

random portal
#

OH

#

did you get the unstable MiSTer main?

chilly ember
#

only the second?

mossy needle
#

Yeah I got it

#

I'm sure I messed something up

orchid nimbus
#

I wouldn't be surprised ๐Ÿ˜„ lol

random portal
#

delete all N64 related files

mossy needle
#

So just redo everything?

trim seal
#

Transferred the bios and text files as binary files?

#

And game folder with the bios is "N64"?

orchid nimbus
#

not the roms

random portal
#

โ€ข make a folder called N64 in the games folder
โ€ข in the N64 folder place the boot.rom and the N64-database.txt

orchid nimbus
#

N64-database.txt case sensitive)

#

as per my absolutely cool FAQ

#

some even say it's the best n64 FAQ out there

#

I made a perfect FAQ

#

๐Ÿ˜„

chilly ember
#

Some say it's the only FAQ out there

random portal
#

you can lay out the game ROMs in the same folder as the boot.rom and N64-database.txt

random portal
orchid nimbus
mossy needle
#

Cue the finger wagging

orchid nimbus
#

sorry gifs are not allowed en mass - and I did a lot already today

#

so I post them and remove them

#

keeps the chat clean

mossy needle
#

Let's not turn this into the Tetris discord

orchid nimbus
#

let's not

chilly ember
#

That's the way, only the people who are around get to enjoy them for the moment

mossy needle
#

I can say I was there

orchid nimbus
#

@mossy needle see DM

orchid nimbus
#

@random portal should have invested in an MSX LaserDisc

#

those things are worth quite a lot these days

mossy needle
#

I see what happened

#

The boot.rom file was a .bin file that I thought would change after accidentally naming it .bin. little did I know there are no takebacksies

orchid nimbus
#

@mossy needle you're fired

#

that's just unexcusable

#

happy gaming ๐Ÿ˜„

orchid nimbus

anyway falling asleep here - been a long day

trim seal
#

Flying Dragon isn't perfect but it's surprisingly playable

#

Toodles

mossy needle
#

Get out of here and sleep

#

Banjo Kazooie is kind of like a text adventure with no choices

#

Which is not uninteresting

random portal
#

The only collectathon I beat to climax was Conker's Bad Fur Day. Even when I was a kid, I could not understand the appeal of Mario 64, Bajo, and Donkey Kong. ||same goes for Spyro and Crash, but I like those games for other reasons.||

chilly ember
#

Collect all the things

#

Conkers bad fur day is kinda barely a collectathon

#

You can get all the money but you dont NEED all the money

tacit belfry
chilly ember
#

Spyro and crash were never games I 100%. I never even finished banjo tooie before. The worst for too many collectibles is donkey kong 64

#

Banjo tooie over did it with the hub world

random portal
#

Conker's single player was just a hub world

chilly ember
#

Basically

random portal
#

the best parts were isolated levels ๐Ÿ˜†

chilly ember
#

But i still love it

#

Matrix scene i still never will get sick of even. Product of its time

random portal
#

yeah the humor still hits me, but I understand it differently as I get older

mossy needle
#

I'm a sucker for the n64 Era collectathons

#

I've definitely spent time getting 101% many times on dk64

chilly ember
#

Yea of course, i got it as 7th birthday gift and it got better with age

mossy needle
#

The great mighty poo is one of the best arias or the era

chilly ember
#

The game script/story was inspired by south park of the era

#

It's all so crude

#

Hate the xbox remake mainly because conker only has one sub machine gun in the matrix scene

mossy needle
#

And it was censored more than the n64 version too

random portal
chilly ember
#

โ˜ข Conker: Live & Reloaded โ˜ข | Walkthrough | TRUE HD QUALITY

Conker: Live & Reloaded is an action-platform video game developed by Rare and exclusively released for the Xbox in June 2005. The single player mode is a remake of the 2001 game Conker's Bad Fur Day for the Nintendo 64 with new stages. However, it includes a new multiplayer mode that ...

โ–ถ Play video
mossy needle
#

The Xbox version censored more of the language

chilly ember
#

Yes it did

mossy needle
#

Which was dumb since xbox was the cool kids console

#

With Halo and stuff

chilly ember
#

They were working on a conker 2 but microsoft had them remake the first instead

#

Shame

random portal
#

Coker's Bad Fur Day: Live & Reloaded was basically a frat boy reliving his frat years. I cannot.

mossy needle
#

And then Rare was sent to the gallows of Grabbed by the Goulies and Kinect games

random portal
#

remember, it wasn't the same Rare

mossy needle
#

I know alot of those guys went to other things

chilly ember
#

I finished live and reloaded once. Never went back

mossy needle
#

I think I beat it first in Xbox and then went back to play it on n64 years later

random portal
#

I'm very happy TimeSplitters happened after 007 GoldenEye and Perfect Dark (same devs)

mossy needle
#

Yes Timesplitters is an amazing game

chilly ember
#

I still have my copy on n64

#

(conkers bad fur day)

trim seal
#

Finished a race in first place in Mario Kart with the NSO controller and.....that end-race music is just transportative.

#

I sold my copy of Conker's for far too little a long time ago to pay for a valentine's gift that I regret, for my then gf.

mossy needle
#

Awww

random portal
chilly ember
#

Very ouch

trim seal
#

I have two cart copies now but can't bring myself to spend the cheddar needed for a box.

mossy needle
#

It happens

trim seal
#

/ manual

mossy needle
#

I did the same thing with Fire Emblem on gamecube

trim seal
#

Bugger

#

I feel your pain.

mossy needle
#

That game can put me though a PhD program now

chilly ember
#

I have the strategy guide still but i borrowed it to a friend at the time and the ripped the fromt cover

#

Still have the rest.

#

But still i understand the pain in a way

mossy needle
#

Lending stuff to friends is why I have trust issues

random portal
#

I casually gave my brother a copy of MGS Twin Snakes for GameCube and I told him he has my blessings to sell it if he's ever tight for money. He won't do it cause it means more that I gave it to him.

trim seal
#

It's a universal pain, I think. I reckon a lot of us have a story of loss around our gaming history.

chilly ember
mossy needle
#

I still think one of my friends stole my copy of paper mario from back in the day

chilly ember
#

I lent my kirby 64 cartridge to someone in grade 5, i stole it back when i was at his house with his sister in grade 9

trim seal
#

Oh yeah, I lost a copy of Thousand Year Door in a house move. Still hoping one day I find it while cleaning, but that's just me kidding myself.

mossy needle
#

That's quite a loss for sure

random portal
#

I lost my Tony Hawk 64 games at a party when I was in 6th grade. People thought the host was loaded with money because there were all of these N64 games just sitting around, some people started pocketing a handful of games including mine.

chilly ember
#

Thats awful ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

random portal
#

they had the characters and videos unlocked

mossy needle

One of those parties

fast swan

Fooling around with RE2 I make it to the title menu then crash looking forward to the future of this core!๐Ÿ˜

mossy needle
#

Ooo

random portal
#

guess the game. I was busy chatting here I forgot to move onto the next game

trim seal
#

Earthworm Jim 3D is a graphical mess, but it's a charming one.

mossy needle
#

I got All star tennis 99 to work pretty well

ripe prism
#

Havenโ€™t seen it mentioned yet but will this core cover the 64DD or is that a whole different project?

mossy needle
#

That's a good question

chilly ember
#

I heard simcity works

random portal
ripe prism
#

Would be cool to check out the Mario artist games and fzero

hot spoke
mossy needle
ripe prism
#

So did the Dd just make more storage space and nothing more?

hot spoke
ripe prism
#

Iโ€™m happy as long as theyโ€™re playable and accurate

#

Fzero had the coolest expansion

chilly ember
ripe prism
#

Isnโ€™t doshin the giant a popular one?

trim seal
#

Holy Magic Century is going in game, even though that-which-shall-not-be-named isn't.

ripe prism
#

Iโ€™m looking at the 10 game list

hot spoke
ripe prism
#

Crazy seeing all the almosts on the DD

#

Depressing seeing stuff that never made it to the public

chilly ember
#

I'm still rocking my Everdrive before the switched to x naming format

random portal
#

F-Zero is probably 99% the target demographic for modern N64 fans

ripe prism
hot spoke
chilly ember
#

I hate it too but i got used to it

#

except the time i beat resident evil two in a sitting and forgot to hit the reset button

trim seal
#

Glover is untextured and a slideshow at times, but does technically go in game

mossy needle
#

I remember seeing a 64DD a while back for only $200 and am kinda kicking myself for not getting it

random portal
#

off topic: F-Zero on SNES has a homebrew/romhack that combines F-Zero and BS F-Zero into one game.

ripe prism
#

Whatโ€™s bs?

random portal
#

BS refers to the Satellaview SNES

ripe prism
#

Satela view stuff?

#

Hell yeah guessed right

#

Was going through a bit of those games

chilly ember
random portal
#

I actually don't know what BS stands for

ripe prism
#

Anything missing in the BS history?

chilly ember
#

Bad quality photo. 2012

mossy needle
#

That's an og everdrive

trim seal
#

Broadcast Satellite

ripe prism
#

Wasnโ€™t it they can only preserve off whatโ€™s still loaded in cartridges

random portal
#

if you load up a naked BS ROM, it heavily resembles Earthbound. Lot's of space for implications and imagination.

trim seal
#

Well, Broadcast Satellaview.

ripe prism
#

Reading about the BS and sad Iโ€™ll never experience that live

#

Radio broadcasts along with the games

chilly ember
#

Rip the lost voice lines for zelda satellaview

#

I wouldn't understand them but it still sucks

random portal
#

Sega Genesis also had something similar

chilly ember
#

Sega channel yea

random portal
#

||sorry for off-topic'ing again||

ripe prism
#

That one looked cool as hell

random portal
#

someone made a homebrew intended to replicate Sega Channel

ripe prism
#

Didnโ€™t sega channel do online football or something? Or just downloading games

trim seal
#

You can play a little of Asteroids Hyper 64 before it hangs.

chilly ember
#

There's a zelda 64 hack that brings back alot of beta elements that will hopefully release in a completed state

chilly ember
#

The whole trailer

#

I have no idea. There's a demo out there for it but i haven't tried it yet

ripe prism
#

Is it new levels? Just watched it

#

Never got into Zelda so Iโ€™m missing out, hopefully the mister core pushes me

chilly ember
#

Beta element inspired hack so very much different

#

I finished ocarina of time a few times, one of those games you have to finish to be a true n64 fan

ripe prism
#

Nah you just need some fun multiplayer

#

Mario kart and goldeneye, never got Mario party

chilly ember
#

Yea maybe but i still highly recommend it if you want a good story on n64

#

one of the best even compared to today's standards

ripe prism
#

I played it a little but never got hooked

#

Iโ€™m way more casual

fast swan
#

Looking forward to playing more Legend of Zelda I have Majora's Mask but never played it

chilly ember
#

One of those games that get better, the more you know about it

ripe prism
#

I tried Kirby 64 on my switch and it seems kinda meh

chilly ember
#

running around not knowing what to do isn't fun

ripe prism
#

Not as kinetic as snes

mossy needle
#

Kirby 64 was fun as a kid

#

But kinda boring now

ripe prism
#

Impressive graphics but empty

fast swan
#

I enjoy Kirby games never played 64

mossy needle
#

I remember playing the mini games more than the main game

chilly ember
#

Kirby n64 is cool for its combined power ups tho

#

I miss that in every kirby game

mossy needle
#

Very true! The double bladed laser sword was always my favorite

chilly ember
#

Some of it is so game breaking

#

Or useless

#

Like the fridge

mossy needle
#

They were definitely trying things

chilly ember
#

I 100% completed it when i was six and that took alot of trial and error. Its not hard to get through but actually collecting every crystal shard can be frustrating

#

Without a guide telling you what power up opens what

languid dune
#

Robert was aiming for Mario Kart 64 and ended up Cruis'n instead. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

mossy needle
chilly ember
#

Yea that's the classic

#

Wayback machine is the only way now

languid dune
#

Me and that machine go way back. Good times.

mossy needle
#

Online text walkthroughs saved so much frustration

chilly ember
#

Sometimes

#

Or there was weird rumors there that didn't exist :p

mossy needle
#

And created new frustration when the person creating the walkthrough was wrong or couldn't correctly explain what to do

chilly ember
#

Very painful :p. Kids have it so easy nowadays

mossy needle
#

I spent top long in pokemon trying to get Mew behind that truck in Vermillion

#

Too long*

chilly ember
#

That damn truck. There are rom hacks now that let you get mew from that truck

#

Still kinda on topic, Pokemon stadium has the transfer pack to play pokemon red

mossy needle
#

Oh thats right

#

I got stadium 2 to run for a sec until it froze

#

Hopefully soon we'll be able to play these games without so many graphical glitches

chilly ember
#

I'm not worried about how long it takes, as long as i get my conker's bad fur day matrix scene

weary palm
#

Collecting stuff in DK64 is fun.

Pokemon is quite the collectathon too.

chilly ember

I've never finished a pokedex

chilly ember

I hated the last boss though.

#

Last thing I finished.

chilly ember

Doesn't it have an overly long boss phase thing happening? I never finished it so never felt that pain

placid quiver
cerulean elk
zinc dew
#

And the failure has to be fascinating

#

For Virtual Hydlide the fascinating aspect is that it looks and runs terribly but still very unique. No other game looks like it.

#

For Quest 64 the fascination is that itโ€™s a traditional looking RPG for a console that practically has none and it features a compelling battle system.

#

Another important aspect of meme games, they have to be interesting.

#

Itโ€™s why we meme Quest 64 and not Aidyn Chronicles. That game is just bad, not fun to look at, and just dreadfully boring.

#

With Quest 64 an innocent bystander can be momentarily fooled into thinking itโ€™s a hidden gem.

#

Also you need to pepper in ridiculousness too. Perpetuate over the top fanaticism through consistent praise.

#

The banning of the gameโ€™s name cemented itโ€™s meme status here ironically.

paper orchid
#

Personally I liked the questing fantasy RPG that we shall not name 64 when I played it as a kid. It does have an interesting battle system but I agree that it's not a very compelling game to revisit today

#

That being said, nostalgia is a hell of a drug, so guess who's very happy right now

cerulean elk
#

Which makes it a โ€œflawed gameโ€. Not a bad one

zinc dew
#

youโ€™re a flawed game

cerulean elk
#

IMO โ€œbad gamesโ€ are games that phoned it in. Zero inspiration, zero ambition, zero overall โ€œattemptโ€

cerulean elk
marble cargo
#

Holy Magic Century and Virtual Hydlide are similar in the sense that they actually have interesting concepts that help make them stand out, but are bogged down by the lackluster execution.

zinc dew
#

I am genuinely fascinated by Virtual Hydlide, I need to make an honest attempt to play it

orchid nimbus
#

talk to Zophar about VH

cerulean elk
#

Like something like Balan Wonderworldโ€ฆthereโ€™s a bad game

#

Zero inspiration, cut and paste job of stale concepts with no thought on how to progress a genre weโ€™ve had forever

marble cargo
cerulean elk
#

But Bubsy 3D? Itโ€™s a terribly flawed game and itโ€™s not funโ€ฆbut itโ€™s so early in 3D Platformer historyโ€ฆyou can tell they tried

zinc dew
#

It offends me on every single level, there is nothing that game does that I enjoy

#

Which is remarkable to me, so I love it

paper orchid
#

I want to love Balan. It has so much going for it but gameplay is just...not really there

orchid nimbus
cerulean elk
#

Itโ€™s like Sonic Frontiers. Holy shit did I get bored with that game after hour three

#

But I gotta give them credit for doing something new and trying a diff formula

paper orchid
#

What I will give Sonic Frontiers is when it goes, it goes hard

#

There's some lackluster parts to it but the parts that are enjoyable make me feel like a kid again

cerulean elk
#

The first three hours were fun, exciting, unique and really made it feel like โ€œfinally Sega is doing something freshโ€โ€ฆbut it just didnโ€™t 100% deliver on that concept for the whole game

zinc dew
cerulean elk
#

Sonic Lost World is another great example. Not a perfect game but when I played it I was just having straight up fun

paper orchid
#

Right, I do wish the overworld was a lot more...interesting? It's just a lot of dash pads and grinding for the most part, and springs

#

The cyber stages are great and while the boss battles aren't fantastic, that first one, hoo boy

#

That's a good fucking track

zinc dew
cerulean elk
#

So thatโ€™s why I really do think Hydlide is not a bad game. The devs tried to do a true open world, procedurally generated RPG ala Dark Souls or Bloodborne in 1995 on notoriously difficult to work with hardware when their main experience was golf games

zinc dew
#

we can separate intent and effort from end result, but I think itโ€™s also great to combine the two, thatโ€™s very kind to do so

cerulean elk
#

Like I hate to say it butโ€ฆGod of War: Ragnarok. That just felt phoned in to me. Like the devs were like โ€œfuck weโ€™ve gotta make another one of theseโ€

zinc dew
#

oh trust me, shipping a game is never phoned in

paper orchid
#

I respect Virtual Hydlide for it's ambition. I hate really don't enjoy playing it and will never revisit it, but I respect it for what it's trying to do

zinc dew
#

Iโ€™ve worked on bad games and Iโ€™ve worked on games that won GOTY, still had to crunch on both cringe

cerulean elk
#

Nothing beats a 10 day shoot, 12 hours a day, plus commute time

zinc dew
#

cerulean elk
#

Then you get a few days with extra hours and suddenly you did 128 hours of work in ten days with no day off

zinc dew
#

I assume making a bad movie also takes a ton of effort too, right?

cerulean elk
#

My job is the same either way. Usually either DP or AC

#

Sometimes direct but thatโ€™s just short form doc stuff / commercials. I never get to do the big shit on narrative

#

But speaking of ambitious gamesโ€ฆthatโ€™s why Killing Time is hands down my fav game of the early 3D generation

#

Super inspired story, superb use of FMV within a game, personality for days, a fully custom soundtrack that fits the vibe, super interesting character design and ambition to spare

#

Itโ€™s not perfect but damn it I love it

#

Same reason I can admit Deadly Premonition 1 and 2 are technically janky games that are still some of the best stuff IMO

@orchid nimbus the n64 FAQ is fabulous.. however there are some missing questions...

Q: is the n64 banana controller the best?
Q: is Robert powered by bananas?

I just read turok 3 is getting a remaster like 1+2 did. Is there a way to fix the controls in the n64 version or better to get the port?

I did notice some text that was flashing a little funny inconsistently but I don't know if that's what he was talking about. And the error code might have been different than he was looking for as well

it seems the flickering pixels in mario kart text are something else. If the palette texture mode was really broken, it would have shown up more

@wanton sun I wish it was as simple as 'don't draw this color' for the black boxes on Mario Kart ๐Ÿ™‚ I guess this is an OR operation - then again I don't know anything about the RDP - just wondering why the boxes are black

want to delay datacache until after most RDP work, so we can instantly see in games that something regressed, which could be a bug from the new data cache

zenith orchid
#

could datacache be toggle-able?

wanton sun

probably not so easy

zenith orchid

got it

Yeah I would rather have texture modes at this point anyway, since dr mario probably won't benefit from datacache ๐Ÿ˜‚

daring meteor
zenith orchid
#

by most things do you mean most games? because there are still features that are unimplemented besides RDP

wanton sun
#

plenty of games currently cannot work due do flash, sram or tlb missing

#

so these are the big topics after rdp

#

data cache...well it depends. If Some games look great with the RDP then and would be playable with faster CPU, i might do it first

#

but rdp is still missing A LOT, you would not think that maybe, but i doubt more then 25% of the work is done

#

(fortunatly most of the required size for the RDP is already in the FPGA)

daring meteor
#

Games crash without Flash/SRAM? Huh, fair

What do you estimate the bulk majority of the leftover 75% of the work is?
Filtering? 2 Pass? Something else?

wanton sun
#

filtering and copy mode need a weird access scheme for the VRAM which i don't fully understand yet. No emulator has to use it, so i need to figure it out myself

#

LOD function is fully missing, same for fog, dithering

#

blender more modes, color combiner also

#

gouraud shading needs subpixel accuracy

#

the whole YUV stuff

zenith orchid
#

I never noticed dithering in any N64 game because of the blur, and probably the fact that I was using a small CRT that only had a composite and RF input

daring meteor
#

Mostly the second

#

I'd guess

#

Haha

#

Even on my RGB CRT I barely notice it on MD

marble cargo
wanton sun
#

the video output has a dedither option. So the data is dithered in vram, but deddithered on output, so you don't see the dithering scheme

zenith orchid
#

then it's a brilliant use of dithering

daring meteor
zenith orchid
#

dithering is meant to provide greater color depth, which is certainly more effective if there is a technology to blend it

#

it's a little strange to me that dither and dedither are in different places

#

it seems redundant

wanton sun
#

there is a interview with Phil Gossett, one of the main RDP developers, where he talks about some stuff. Mostly short stories, but sometimes he really goes into deep details

vapid hawk
#

the VI does the de-dither all as part of scanout i think? so it never has to actually store the higher color-depth result

native mesa
zenith orchid
#

apparently he works in Google now

wanton sun

at this time stamp he talks about AA and Dithering (and dedithering) . Warning, very technical
