@wanton sun thank you for doing this core. You’re making a lot of people happy, including me.

broken viper
#

I literally thought it was impossible on the current hardware.

orchid nimbus
#

@broken viper same was said about the PSX core

stone pilot
#

The same was also said about OutRun and uh, I think Neo-Geo?

#

though I guess for OutRun, PSX, and N64, people were technically right: getting them on DE10 takes a little bit of "cheating"

N64 is being treated the same way, I'm holding my breath that enough corners can be cut to provide PSX-level performance and compatibility. But we shall see. Regardless, it's incredible work.

Which is why I almost regret getting one before I knew mister was a thing. But: you cannot argue the decorative value of a genuine ps1 under your tv. 😉

modest helm
#

It’s better because of the QoL features, the fact that I can use any controller, have save states. Even if one solution is slightly more accurate, all those features in addition to all the other cores makes it better

#

I’m one of those people that likes to be able to play all these games on one device so will gladly sell my Everdrive 64 if all N64 games work

thorn flax
modest helm
#

Being able to use any controller is a big deal for N64. GoldenEye and Perfect Dark play great on emulator with dual sticks when you map the C-buttons to the right stick. Would be great to do this in MiSTer

gaunt star
#

Agreed, I won’t be looking for any non-snac solutions for n64 controllers

#

Which is unfortunate bc I’ve avoided any snac adapters up until now

brisk edge
#

You can technically use a blue retro adapter to do that though

Oh I guess I didn’t agree, misread your comment

The acceleration of the analog stick seems like it will be a bugaboo for any BT controller

Except for the official one

You can also use the 8bitdo mod with a og stick or steelstick if the nso is unobtainable, as it usually is.

no matter how you move your body you can't escape the pain

primal bolt

i drank alot of soda as a kid

orchid nimbus

so last time I felt one come on I downed 1.5 liters of water

#

and said - game on

primal bolt
#

ate a lot of candy too

orchid nimbus
#

they went pretty fast - only suffered for 2 hours

#

went to the ER at hour 1 - by the time I laid down on the bed it all of a sudden was over

primal bolt
#

is it even worth going to the ER?

orchid nimbus
#

doctor had to laugh when I told him what I did

#

if you don't know what it is - or if you are in a lot of pain - yes

primal bolt
#

alright

#

so its a sharp pain in kidney area?

#

i guess id be going either way

#

i wouldnt know what it is

cold pollen
#

I thought I had a kidney stone not long ago

#

Had the constant urge to pee, they tested and it wasn't an infection

#

One day it just stopped without any noticeable stone etc.

orchid nimbus
#

@primal bolt is starts out as a really bad backpain

#

it could be confused as one

#

then it slowly creept to the side

primal bolt
#

i get alot of backpains but from inuuries

#

so i probably wouldnt be able to tell

orchid nimbus
#

then to the front a bit - when you're at that stage they will go into the bladder and the pain stops

#

oh you would

#

back pain goes away a bit when you twist your body

primal bolt
#

like sometimes i get a back pain where i almost collapse

orchid nimbus
#

this is constant

#

ouch

primal bolt
#

but thats a quick sharp pain

#

goes away fast

orchid nimbus
#

kidney stones are like if someone keeps on punching you in the side over and over and over again

#

it pulses a bit - but it's constant

primal bolt
#

which side

orchid nimbus
#

you have 2 kidneys

pick one 😄

Here’s how you do it…take your mister stack. Put the pointy edges into your stomach…about 4 inches to the left of your belly button. Have a friend running drop pick the MiSTer. Repeat every 30 seconds for two straight days

#

1:1 experience

raw oriole
# cerulean elk Here’s how you do it…take your mister stack. Put the pointy edges into your stom...

My trick for avoiding additional kidney stones, which applies to the sort of stone that's from simple low hydration: Double the size of all your cups and glasses. Continue to drink the same number of them. I instituted this after my second attack which put me in two days of fever and well over a week of recovery. Hasn't happened again, seven years or so since. What I do have from that second episode is a scarred ureter, and occasionally if I under-hydrate on a hot/energetic day, it'll get me back for it and I'll have four to eight hours of kicked-in-kidney sort of fairly dull but severe pain.
Keep drinking those fluids!

#

Or if you have a more complicated kidney stone reason, change that diet appropriately!

zealous hull
#

To be fair to them, they've already state that they drink a lot of water and are otherwise quite healthy. The same can be said for my father. Unfortunately they can still happen. Sometimes it's just bad luck.

raw oriole

Or not hydration related. Even then, keeping everything soggy will still help, if only by reducing how much the horrible things rub against the insides of your tubes.

zealous hull
#

If nothing else, everybody should be drinking more water.

#

Stay hydrated out there, gamers.

raw oriole
#

I didn't manage to catch any of mine for checking, but since doubling my fluid intake sorted it out they were almost certainly just hydration related ones. About 70% are.

surely not in the first attempt, maybe later. As always my first goal is to get games running with the knowledge that is already available. Once that is good for most things, i will start to research more things and try to improve the overall knowledge situation with my finding to give something back. In my opinion that is the way to go. Every developer only has 1 life and it's not enough time to find out everything of such a complex system. So let's profit from the previous work to get up to speed fast and then don't stop there, but improve upon that so the next can build on that again

The other part is the PIF ROM, which is just a memory area that contains code the CPU executes right after turning the console on. Catridge checks happen in two parts: CIC as copy protection chip and cartridge CRC check. While the first is really done by the PIF chip itself(and is also missing in the core), the CRC check is done from the CPU by executing the code in the PIF ROM. This second part actually already happens as we use the PIF ROM to boot the n64 core. That's why you need the file. Many emulators just skip that phase and jump directly into the code of the game ROM

#

Oh and region check: there is a different PIF ROM for PAL and yes, that will be required at some point. The core will have to switch the region and which PIFROM to use, comparable to the psx bios/region switch

I wonder if it’s possible to use both the rumble and controller pak at the same time. I know there’s a tremor pak that allows you to toggle. Maybe allowing the ability to easily toggle in the menu is ideal?

Also would the memory pak be handled similarly to the PS1 memory card situation where each game gets its own memory pak? Obviously the games with eeprom support don’t need it

MiSTer FAST FACTS

The Nintendo 64 was named after a national tragedy in Japan where a very dense fog over the Yamanashi prefecture basin blinded drivers with 0 visibility causing the deaths of 64 drivers. Wanting to bring this horror to the rest of the world, Nintendo’s then president Nenlo Tendies, demanded that the console be named 64 and added fog to every game hoping to guide the spirits back to haunt every owner of the console.

Software QA. I do testcases and testautomation for regression testing on customer software. Mainly being the bad guy that tries to break your software, then putting the finger in the wound trying to let all bugs have high priority so they are not talked away as "customer can live with it". However, as i worked as FPGA engineer for 7 years in the same company before, i regulary do all kind off interface things where it's to much SW for the HW guys and to much HW for the SW guys. Overall it's fun and rarely stress 🙂

i have an n64digital hdmi modded jungle green n64. didnt think anyone would be able to build a core for it... whoops.

primal bolt
#

I think the steel bowls is worth the money to have perfect N64 controllers. Controllers are useful.

#

its expensive but I imagine its not cheap to have made either by one person buying small amounts at a time

#

that stuff would be cheaper if some large company was having it made in large quantities

viral wadi
#

yeah i defo thought about it. they were out of stock when i was sourcing all my n64 stuff. i might eventually do one of the controllers w/ it and see how i like it. maybe a daiei hawks one, would fit the steel bowl

primal bolt
#

as far as I know all original controllers and klisch bent the bowls fit

#

i had a couple of the daiei hawks controllers but i wasnt satisfied with the condition so I sold them

#

I like the idea of swapping half of the shells of controllers to make color combos

#

like you could get a clear orange and clear smoke controller and make your own daiei hawks. only difference would be that I think the hawks black part on the bottom is a bit darker

#

its more like a clear black

viral wadi
#

yeah, its not an exact match. i have all the funtastic colors cept the ugly purple one

primal bolt
#

atomic purple?

viral wadi
#

yeah its not my favorite lol

elfin relic
#

heresy

viral wadi
#

i love the grape one though

primal bolt
#

I dont like that one either. I like the grape purple

viral wadi
#

the smoke is my p1 controller

primal bolt
#

I want a gold, watermelon, grape purple, and smoke I think

#

hard to choose they all look good other than atomic

viral wadi
#

orange looks really good also. even the non hawks version

primal bolt
#

gold is my favorite color in general but the gold paint on the controller comes off on the bottom

#

yea orange looks good

viral wadi
#

yeah, gold def chips off

#

i think smoke and grape look the best, followed by watermelon and orange

primal bolt
#

gold chips off all controllers even dual shock 4

viral wadi
#

jungle green and lime look good also

primal bolt
#

even if you take care of it just over time your hands rub it off

viral wadi
#

yeah, its not durible

#

ngl, hdmi modded 64 is pretty nice. u can reset the system from the controller w/ hotkeys. w/ an everdrive, its basically perfect

#

the only issue was the price

#

i think i spent more on it than the mister, and we all know which one was better value

#

paper mario looks great in hdmi though

wanton sun
#

dlc will not come that fast i guess

#

well before core is done, but not in the next weeks

cold pollen
#

I want to snag a new stick but looks like still no grey or even black

broken creek
#

At the low price, why not just order some clear or color sticks and swap them out once black and grey are available? It’s easy enough to just swap the stick.

#

Clear doesn’t look terrible.

cold pollen
#

Cause I don't use my controller lol

#

Also the stick is actually not bad I just figure why not swap it out at the cheap price

lament escarp
#

I ordered glow in the dark sticks, because I thought they're similar enough in color and, you know, glow in the dark.

Hey all. does anyone know the correct hash for the N64 pif rom? I cant seem to find anything useful

quasi storm
#

What is the difference between the two us versions? Just revisional differences?

#

It seems I was able to locate the second US rom, hash verified, but Im still having issues. it throws an E24 error.

remote hatch
#

demos work ?

quasi storm
#

Hmm, thats odd. it is working now. I was running the latest unstable mister main. rolled back to main v230716 and now it works.

#

Thanks again @remote hatch

#

Spoke too soon haha.

#

Should namco Museum be working?

remote hatch
#

are you using the big endian version ?

#

Namco Museum

quasi storm
#

Um?

remote hatch
#

only big endian version work

quasi storm
#

ah

#

ok...haha

#

Whew, what a ride. Found an endianness swapper onlione. now it works

remote hatch
#

cool 😄

quasi storm
#

Is it really that easy? Should I run all my games through? for future reference, I mean.

zinc dew
#

I just bought an NSO controller blobshrug

broken creek
#

Hopefully you like it. Stick feels off to me.

remote hatch
#

I don't have a problem with N64 controllers, I hate them 😄, I had to get a replacement with a different analog layout

chrome quest
#

I still get E46 error on some demos, no issue running Namco though

#

Regarding PIFs, noticed the EU version listed by Vampier is different from a reference hash I've seen for some emulators. Probably too soon for that to matter much though

#

My dad invented the N64 controller and won a lifetime achievement award for his n64 controller joysticks.

#

He saved the world they said.

remote hatch
#

my brain accepts only this controller

zinc dew
#

lol I bought that

#

I did the Kickstarter and the initial batch had the analog stick collide with one of the triggers

#

Like how do you not immediately catch that issue, amateur hour lol

#

they did replace mine for free though so I appreciate that

remote hatch
#

It was only with this joypad that I gained the joy of playing on the N64

quasi storm
#

I have one of those. I have a friend who just cant get past the M-shaped controller. I showed him this, and he said it was bittersweet.

#

Still, mk4 is a treat on this thing.

remote hatch
#

I never had an N64 in the 90s, it's hard to get used to this "M" controller now

quasi storm
#

His argument were so bizarre, though. He was like, "Dude, I don't have three hands!" And I would say, "Hold the analog handle with your left hand, and the button handle with your right..." to which he would reply, "Then why the heck even have this whole aother side?!"

He got me there...

#

I understand they wanted the stick to be front and center as the new way to play, but I sometimes wonder how much better it could have been if they had released the retro fighter pad instead.

#

Dude! StarCraft 64 boots!

zinc dew
#

It’s seriously a decent port lol

#

like if you didn’t have a PC it did ok

today's core is amazing 😄 it almost runs Oeust64

# quasi storm I understand they wanted the stick to be front and center as the new way to play...

If I recall the design philosophy was that it was supposted to be multiple controllers bundled into one. If you had a game that just required the d-pad you helld the outermost handles it functioned as a 6 button + Dpad controller a la saturn or genesis
IF you needed the analog stick for a rail shooter it was just the centre which held like a pistol grip
And if you needed button controls and analog movement you gripped the centre and right handles

I guess I didn't know what you were saying. Starcraft 64 is actually pretty fantastic if you think about it.

Honestly, since learning what a fpga actually is I'm suprised there aren't more applications using it.

Grabbed a used controller with a good stick for $25 today. Bit more than I hoped to pay but whatever 🤷

Honestly, just seeing anything N64 related at all on the MiSTer is sort of surreal. Even more so than the PS1.
