#SNK Neo Geo
1 messages · Page 9 of 1
Wow, I knew you were dumb, but wow
The sad part is that I can see that happening to me. I love to tweak/restore older audio gear. I can't tell you the amount of time that I've overlooked the simple because I was expecting the worst!
Typical Illinois behavior.
Haha I was just exhausted and rushing
Def not Wisconsin behavior. You still haven’t installed power up there
Any pointers on how to convert a .zip NeoGeo game to .neo? (not from Darksoft)
grab the '@MiSTer pack add-on' for neogeo
aka I was too lazy to work it out :p
It's a new game not found in any pack 🫣
ahh, then I'm of even less help sorry
theres https://github.com/city41/neosdconv for converting decrypted mame format roms to .neo
Will give this a try! Thanks!
NP, says it wont work if any of the ROMs are encrypted
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/NeoGeo_MiSTer?tab=readme-ov-file#features
I was able to make the game load by editing romsets.xml
Will open a PR soon
Thanks!
nice 🙂
Now I'm curious what game it is!
tell us your secrets Boot!
I just checked out a video of the game. And the crabs have pants! I repeat, the crabs have pants! 👖
It's probably a commercial crab
what a dapper gentleman
Where did you get this photo of me??
it plays very perfect
it's cool but very strange, i loaded it into my TO cart in my real 6 slot neogeo cab, so weird to see shinobi come up on attract mode rotation on neogeo lol. It does seem to be pretty much identical to running the shinobi core on mister.
The playability is exact
There are small audio bugs, but this is very cool thing
I tested in neosd
I need to test it in neocd
Sorry folks I've been out of the loop for a while, I was wondering if the nightly core with accurate audio hit main?
Hey, stable is still NeoGeo_20240418.rbf from April
#unstable-nightlies message was from August
Stable has just been updated
I played shinobi in real hard
in mister
it plays perfect
it has the bugs of original arcade
all
What's new?
It should contain the changes from the August 2024 build that improves the audio to be more accurate to the AES Neo Geo hardware.
Previous core would crash alot playing Pulstar using unibios cheats, always randomly get the green screen of death, new core played 5 levels with no problem
finally it has been updated ?
Are those few open issues logged in github still a problem?
New update 5 hours ago but I can't see any notes about
I gave a nudge behind the scenes and seems that it made it's way up the chain to Sorg who has done a fresh release.
I remember awhile back someone did some tweak to a file that meant a bootleg game that wasn't running before now worked, I am not sure if that has made it in, but would be worth digging into if anyone remembers what that was - will be up in this chat a good while back
is this a stable release?
Yes
There is a kof 98 bug raised. Will try to run the attract mode and report back to see if I can reproduce the issue
Couldn't recreate it
hey @ocean phoenix , when you have a sec pls unpin #1075091985007902812 message now that we have the new stable release
Cheers 👍
Thank you very much!
Did we find out what is included in the latest stable release?
Wasn't it audio fixes
yeah i always wondered what one could look like, sf2 with the sprite scaling effects of neogeo like in art of fighting would be crazy 🙂
Fuck yeah just like I remember it
Finally a real Double Dragon game coming to neo geo
Knight's Chance, which is a quite polished "homebrew" release has a bug on mister where the music won't loop. the rom is legally available to download and purchase from them on itch.io, good game. I let the devs know but they say its fine on real hardware. Not sure if the neo-geo core is under active development or how game specific bugs are handled.
Mentioning it here is good, filling out a bug report on the repo would also help.
File an issue here if you can - https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/NeoGeo_MiSTer/issues
That’s the best way to get it noticed and potentially fixed.
It could be that it needs a quirk, similar to other homebrew that mister supports
What format is the rom?
What can I do in real life to get noticed and potentially fixed?
There is a bug in HYPERNOID in the same way. Only happens in JAP region (mister and real hw). Check all the regions if you can with Knights Chance.
I don't remember an issue on Knight's Chance, but I was testing it on MiSTer with the original BIOS and the USA region.
Like GOEMON said, that should be tsted with other regions.
I’ll test again it might have been in euro. I’ll do a report with repro when I do, thanks 🙏
I will test in on the NG.
Ok
I only have the neo file
it fails in mister, all regions all modes
no loop
in real hw it works ok
but i don't have the darksoft set of this game, so... I can't test it.
maybe other set of the romset can work well
I really don't know
Okay i logged the knight's chance bug.
Does anyone have any luck getting softdip settings to stick in AES for example Metal Slug? it keeps undoing the blood [ON]. i sucessfully saved and reloaded a game to memory card, but yeah softdip doesn't seem to stick. Am i missing something? unibios AES.
In your mister OSD, set it to MVS. Then use unibios to change arcade/console
It will save settings in soft dip switches
what would be the problem with this knight's chance...
all the games are working perfectly...
would be good to test this game with the darksoft set.
i don't have full faith in neo files
darksoft fails too
Is it possible to create a MGL file for an alternate Neo Geo setup which save the core settings but uses the same Game Folder?
i can do a MGL and have it as Neo Geo MVS with the correct settings to start it as MVS system and all but it also wants a new games folder.
i don't want to have double the Neo Geo roms.
Might need a quirk?
There is also a file where you can configure .neo
Yes you can
Something like this you can do
That's exactly what i already did. It looks for a GBC game folder though.
You need to edit the mgl file
How does your MGL file look like?
You can make your MGL like this:
<mistergamedescription>
<rbf>_Console/NEOGEO</rbf>
<setname>NeoGeoMVS</setname>
</mistergamedescription>
Mine looks exactly like this. It searches always for a game folder with the name of the setname.
In this case NeoGeoMVS
Check if you can change the setname to match NEOGEO
And if it will create separate config
Otherwise you could symlink
how do i do that?
Yes, do this:
<rbf>_Console/NEOGEO</rbf>
<setname same_dir="1">NeoGeoMVS</setname>
</mistergamedescription>```
setname same_dir is the command you want to give it a new config file but use the same directory.
Nice thanks
I do that myself actually.
Because if you mix console saves and arcade saves it gets corrupted.
Neo Geo is the first i want this. All others like GBC and PCE CD can ahve different directories for the games which makes sense.
Exactly. i want to have AED to play casually and use training modes and such and MVS to have the soft dips saved.
I do the same with Light-gun games and Wonderswan games that are vertically oriented. Give them different configs files so I can save their settings to always have a light gun be the default control or have the wonder swan video flipped vertically with a more comfortable controller config.
Coool I didn't know about the same dir
Thanks
Yah, like most things MiSTer related we don’t do a good job bubbling that info up lol. Sorry.
Seems to be documented at least, so that is good 🙂
I added it to the mkdocs wiki fairly recently, probably should note it applies to the saves and cheats folders too...
Ah dude you’re awesome!
Gotta spread the good word about about MGLs.
Games will be saved. To a directory of your choosing
just tried that with my MVS mgl setup and it didn't save 😦
Oh weird
do i need to save the core settings after setting up the dip switch settings?
nope that didn't save either
i have my core set to Arcade MVS, Unibios to Europe Arcade, go into the service mode and set the level to 1 and the the Blood on and save the cores settings. After a complete reboot the settings are default again.
But that is the major selling point of having a MVS version of the core 🙂
Maybe @limber atlas can explain how he did it?
I uhhhh, didn’t know how lol
Think you need a mem card enabled for it to save unibios settings
N enable autosave
Then save OSD settings 🙂
yes it did. didn't help
Set the mem card option to 'plugged', enable autosave, save settings
Then change unibios settings, open OSD for it to save to sd
Should stick
i will try. thanks
but this only with AES unibios dip settings or with MVS service menu dip settings?
ok so then you mean change settings in the service mode because in MVS hardware mode you don't have dip settings option in the unibios menu.
Ok, the Uni bios 4.0 menu that the [dip] settings option brings up when in MVS mode
Which has the blood option you mentioned
that menu is actually from the MVS itself, you can also access it on a normal non unibios machine by pressing the test button.
Ok, but do the steps get the settings you wanted to persist after reboot?
Sweet, I mostly know neogeo from arcade back in the day or mister core, seems Ive never seen the other/actual uni menu then 🙂
Do you know if it's possible to create single game mgl files like the gamesmenu script does but for an alternative MGL loaded core like the NG MVS here?
yes, i can confirm dip settins don't save on AES mode (unibios setting doesn't matter), only in MVS hardware mode with memory card saves on.
Should be able to add the setname tag to the MGLs that gamesmenu creates
do you have an example?
Has some example MGLs and the parameters for diff cores
i see. but it means i would need to change every single game MGL file manually right?
Yeah, or script it in one way or another
Puh, ok thanks
I wonder if anyone has already made a script that allows you to select a group of roms and then generate MGLs for each one with specifically defined settings 🤔
There’s @echo pine’s extensions in update all, the GamesMenu script does that:
You can also use his Favorites script to do one game at a time:
Thanks! I feel like I knew this at one point and then immediately forgot
These yes but they do not allow you to do what i wanted with a different setname but same directory. It only sees what game folders you have.
Ohh ok. Yeah I manually make my MGLs.
Weird flex but OK
The best flex is a weird flex
hand rolled MGLs from the scripting fields of texas
Organic, free-range MGLs with no chemicals
lol damnit
you should offer your MGLs on etsy
so, it is possible to make a file to start directly MVS, AES, or CD separately ? I'll study this.
would be great to make a single memcard for all the games, that would be good.
Yes, i know have the main core file in Consoles as Neo Geo AES, a MGL file in the Consoles as Neo Geo CD and made a bunch of direkt loading MGL files for all games and put the into a folder in Arcades to load into MVS mode and having the dip switches saved.
yah it’s great
@sly jackal I added a note that the music loop seems to work on an older core build I happened to have - 20220403
i ran update all at least once this year so not sure what version my core is on, but it's recent
every time when launch the core . UniBios unable to enter by pressing (A+B+C) & (Start+A+B+C). every time need to enter to DIP setting and exit. than only can access the manu. any solution make able to access easily every time when launch the core?
Is the system type set to AES or MVS?
Switch controller to joystick only in the OSD
Yes is working. Thanks for the info👍
Note to self - Tiny Best Set Go roms for Neo-Geo are not gonna work on MiSTer
Was wondering for a loooooong while if something weird was happening to unibios
Anyway, a lot of cores are shifted to the left on my CRT but Neo-Geo is the worst
Wonder if I could center it a bit
Iv had the same mister setup for years, but lately when I try to load any Neo Geo games they take FOREVER. Noticed it late last year…..Depending on the size of game, it takes between 1-5 minutes. I know this was not always the case as I remember the games loading within a matter of seconds before. There’s no other core that even comes close to taking that long to load.
Is anyone else experiencing the same thing or know what the solution may be?
Probably, the microSD card is bad. However, here, the NEO GEO's game folder always takes longer to read. Is this related to the core processing speed, or do other cores like the N64, CDi, etc., also have slow ROM file loading?
Nope n64 and others you mentioned load almost immediately, within seconds.
I remember the folders taking a moment to populate the list, but the rom load times were never like this. First time it happened I thought it had crashed because it was on a black screen for well over a minute before showing any loading progress. There is definite correlation between the size of rom and load time though. Ms3 takes 5+ minutes whereas andro dunos only takes around 2min.
I tried some Neo cd games out of curiosity and those load immediately with no issues.
nice
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kizuna_Encounter:_Super_Tag_Battle - 4 player is now supported
Kizuna Encounter: Super Tag Battle is a 1996 weapon-based fighting game produced by SNK for the Neo Geo arcade and home platform. It is the sequel to Savage Reign. The European Neo-Geo home cartridge PAL release was rare, with only five known copies, making it a sought-after item in video game collecting (the Japanese AES version is not rare and...
Great surprise!
One thing that I've noticed, I think it is better if the core defaults to "Joystick only", rather than "Joystick & Spinner".
yeah... strikers 1945 plus i think has issues with spinner on if you have a controller that has an accelerometer
or was it the dualsense joystick
been so long since i mentioned that issue
in general people should have to turn on the spinner as an option if they want it typically i would think
A+B+C input rarely works during unibios 4 screen if you have joystick + spinner option
Agreed
i just use the explicit mapping for ABC
i start a game, do select+start, then go down to soft reboot and press my ABC button
and hold it
Also, some issues with button inputs during intro in neo turf masters with joystick + spinner
I don't think you need to soft reboot
You select game -> unibios 4 screen appears -> press ABC
I'll try to confirm this when I'm back from my travels
Neotris (beta 2) is playable for 4 players also
i've never been able to get into the menu from launching the game and pressing abc
it doesn't respond for me
you always have to hold ABC on boot in my experience
just tested with twinkle star sprites, yeah... unfortunately still have to do the soft reboot from the in game menu from unibios
okay just did it with a reset and apply from osd, maybe it's got a really tight window or something
either way, it's been easiest for me to just hold ABC when selecting soft reboot
Might be a bug with your configuration. Try deleting the Neo Geo core and settings, get a fresh build, and see if it makes any difference.
how full is your MicroSD?
if it's above 95% or something, i could see issues like this happening with the neogeo core
does it take a long time to load the Cave core games? like dodonpachi?
Neo Geo roms are the slowest to load for me but they take like 7-10 seconds at most
are you using .neo or mame romsets?
There is clearly some read struggle
they are the largest things that get loaded into SDRAM out of any core
the 128MB sdram module was made to replace the 32MB SDRAM module just for this core
the SDRAM load is slower than DDR3, cave uses DDR3 as an intermediary to then speed up loading to SDRAM just like the neo geo core so i was mostly wondering if the same behavior happens there, since not a lot of cores do that same thign on such big files and the cave roms are fairly large
cd core loading like neogeocd streams directly off the microsd so it doesn't have to preload
I didn't realise Neo Geo multitap was even a thing, what games all supported it?
the one game i linked
basically it was only on early location tests that had 4 player
the 4player jamma expansion board is a prototype
almost no one would have encountered it in the wild
you too can own the kit to do this for the low low price of $14,250 - https://www.neostore.com/Kizuna-Encounter-Super-Tag-Battle-4-player-MVS-k-p/986.htm
i think it was done with two neo geo cabs originally during the location tests if i'm not mistaken
It’s a 256gb and still has around 170gb free.
These loads instantly, well within 3-5 seconds
I’ll try this thank you
yeah that's strange then if it's taking minutes for the neo geo core, never seen anything like that before
i agree to reset settings, get a new rbf, etc...
I deleted the RBF, settings, configs, etc. Everything except the ROM folder; no change 😦
Im using .neo
I should also note, that after I load a game and then load another one, if I switch back to the first, it will load immediately like it is supposed to. Ex: Load MS1(LONG load time), then load MS3(long load time), then go back to MS1 its loads instantly.
Well, I would try at least one mame ROM from the Darksoft set
If that works your problems can be confined to ".neo"
New homebrew that also supports the adapter: https://www.patreon.com/posts/block-panic-dx-119035418?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_fan&utm_content=web_share
Attract-Mode of my 4 Player NeoGeo Game "Block_Panic_DX"... available for AES, MVS & NGCD... and it's free of charge!
- 4 player experience (but only with supported adapter, don't ask me where you can get one!)
- all combinations from 4 human players to 4 AI bots.
- 4 game modes (endless, 40 lines, 3 minutes & vs.)
- supports standard tetramin...
As an FYI, the NGCD version won't support this 4 player adapter "Block_Panic_DX_250101_(NGCD).zip
- NGCD standard version, supports NeoTris, no FTC1B support in NGCD bios!"
Yes but not setup for Mister, Ill try that next.
Im going to delete EVERYTHING including the roms folder. Downloading a mame set now to try that and see.
SO the normal MAME set is not correct? I need to use the Darksoft set?
I would try the Darksoft one. That's the one that is known to work
Ok thanks @quick flame I tried it (same one I had on there before) after erasing everything and downloading it new and now its working. Guess one of the files in the GAMES/NEOGEO folder was the culprit all along. Appreciate all the help. Hoping if it happens to someone else they will see this and have a solution.
These were the files deleted that solved it, itwas one of them: 000-lo.lo, neo-epo.sp1, sfix.sfix, sp-s2.sp1, uni-bios.rom, gog-broken-romsets.xml, gog-romsets.xml, romsets.xml
This is great! Now if we could just get some sort of SNAC adapter support for the linkable cartridges like League Bowling and Thrash Rally
Sorg would like to add NeoTap compatibility to the core as well, if anyone is familiar with it, please let him know: https://www.chipsonsteroids.com/docs/neotap_specs_doc_en.pdf
Link to Neotap discussion (Patreon): https://www.patreon.com/posts/neogeo-119345206?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_fan&utm_content=web_share
Has Sorg added another multitap support? What game is this for?
No, he hasn't added another, it's for the AES, it is an aftermarket multitap
To my knowledge, NeoTris and Block Panix DX which I linked above. the FTC1B is originally for Kizuna Encounter AFAIK.
First work on NeoGeo for the port of the arcade game “Midnight Wanderers” (Capcom CPS1) with Scorpion Engine, not exactly a 1/1 port. More than 30 animations for the player, HUD present, no music or sfx yet, still a few things to polish, I hope to go further…
Interesting
I posted a build in the https://discordapp.com/channels/647909397477195803/737506076806611064/1338223255911268467 channel where I added H/V adjust for CRT users. Try it out
Thanks Toya
Thanks for adding that adjustment
My pvm doesn't have a ton of adjustments
That'll be nice for dialing it in
@snow plume hi regarding your PR to add captain barrel, the XML file used on Mister provided by the dev game. There is a parameter pcm="1".
Do you have it on your side ?
Hmm... I don't have that option added and the sound seems to work fine? 🤔
I don't see any differences between with or without this option
It's great, every core should have the H/V CRT adjustments IMO :). I'm biased because i play most my games on an arcade CRT and i really don't want to fiddle with CRT knobs to resize a screen, especially when i have it perfect for consoles and CPS1/2 already i kind of want to leave the CRT as is and prefer to adjust in-core settings if they exist.
NeoGeo games are mostly good but a couple of games are a little wide so using H adjust to center a bit helps. Some games benefit from the V adjust to get the top and bottom rows both on screen.
We only add it to Neo geo because it is first and foremost an arcade system
I’ll push a PR with this change
Oh, Golden Axe release tomorrow? https://x.com/therealh0ffman/status/1889423018310414581?mx=2
Going to do a short stream tomorrow so we can package this bad boy up and get it released. In the mean time, enjoy the Neo Geo CD version with epic orcehstral soundtrack by Richard Douglas.
awesome news, can't wait to play it
2020 Super Baseball has visual glitches during the intro, latest core.
This seems to happen if you set core to MVS and Unibios and keep unibios set to Arcade
Anyone else that can confirm this and perhaps, confirm on real hardware?
It happens in the real hardware too
Toya
there are like small lines of pixels popping during the 2020 logo zooming, right?
yes correct
Thank you for confirming Goemon
Ok this is seriously cool as hell, but for a layman like me it’s just basically an arcade port to the Neo Geo right?
yes, although the ncd version has an orchestral soundtrack
Oh nice, so it’s an upgrade!
as long as you play the ncd version…I don’t think the base neogeo version has the alternate soundtrack
“During the port I found a youtube video which found a few of the sample sources for Golden Axe came from a selection of 80s movies, Conan, American Werewolf in London and Rambo. To get the best quailty possible I did a deep dive in these films and managed to replace 6 voice samples with new higher quality versions.”
Haha that’s awesome!
haha
yes its JUST Golden Axe but a cool version of it
Oh so like @spiral orbit is like you but a cool version of you?
if by cool you means smells like beans and isnt allowed to carry a knife in public sure
lmao
if you mean cool like you then smells of propane and cries while flexing in front of the mirror...also sure!
I like propane
I think you mean chili farts, thank you very much
We don’t slather our meat with syrup and other nonsense like those philistines over in the carolinas, so if you get bbq farts from eating salt and pepper encrusted beef, go see a doctor
This is correct 😄
I need the knife to open my bean can.
Is updated soundtrack any good?
Personally, I like the music as an independent thing. Not quite sure I like it replacing the original soundtrack since that’s not what I’m nostalgic for.
I can't seem to get the CD version running on MiSTer! Tried both the bin/cue and chd formats.
What did it do? I've been able to start it OK
Oh - I've just noticed that it refused to boot with the CD Type set to CDZ if UniBIOS was on - Might be worth you checking that and trying with either CD Type set to CD or BIOS to Original
Didn’t have any issues here. Your download came direct from the dev?
Yeah. Maybe it's the CDZ setting like Trifle said. I know I have that set on my system. I'll have to test it later. I did test different CD speed settings yesterday, and that was definitely not the cause.
CD games don’t have to be in the JSON database or whatever the core uses for roms, right?
No
Tested it again, and yeah, you have to set the CD type to CD in the core, and not CDZ. I forget if there was any benefit to setting it to CDZ? I feel like I remember someone recommending that setting back when the CD support was first added.
Like I know what the CDZ is of course. And that on real hardware, I believe it could do 2x CD read speeds compared to the original CD models. But with the core having its own speed settings, I can't remember if setting it to CDZ really has any benefit.
CDZ support with the core has always been finicky. I just run everything with UniBIOS with CD type and 4x.
Hello Evryone. Fro Neo Geo CD does CHD files have to be in a corresponding directory or all chd can be in the same directory?
it doesn't matter where you put the chd
It's always best to put CD games in their own folder for each game. PS1, Saturn, Neo Geo CD, etc.
Thanks i will do it
No
Making sure people don't get confused. Like he said, it is always best to put CHD in their own folder.
Who updates the romlist for the neo geo core? I had to update my own to get the darksoft and mame versions of shinobi and golden axe to work with the core
Make a PR
Oh ok I havent used my github account in forever..lol
If you are able to get that updated it would be much appreciated 🙂
Ill get it updated..just havent used github in a long time. Like before I started using mister I made few themes for retropie and havent touched it since
Tried to do it during my lunch break and the browser wpuldnt scroll down to allow me to click submit on the pr
If you use NEO you don't have to
Yeah I know but it might help other that arent as knowledgeable
The NG:Dev games post Last Hope are all missing as well. But those are not available in the public romsets.
Some NG:Dev games are protected with an ASIC or FPGA chip.
Can't be dumped at the moment (same situation as Paprium on MD/Gen).
Yeah NG:Dev games are doomed, for now
I reached out to them, to see if they could at least sell the roms (since they don't produce neo geo cart anymore). Answer was no
Leaving money on the table
I would too..they afraid of someone sharing them. But Ive never shared any roms I paid for
Also xenocris snes version
And, like, long term, terrible for preservation
although I assume the protection will be cracked at some point
There is probably some mad scientist that bought the cart looking at it now
I backed out of my pr when I just added shinobi everything worked fine but when I added the line for golden axe it messed up the whole romlist and nothing would play.I dont know what's going on and Id rather not mess anything up. Ill keep playing with it tho.
classic "protect the value" mindset
Neo Geo is such an "investment" in people's minds they get V upset when they think something devalues their carts
I wouldn't know how detrimental piracy is to a homebrew team making game for discontinued consoles but it would at least increase their visibility by a huge margin. This is the first I've heard of NG:Dev.
Yeah, just trying to understand their reasoning
they were the "first" team making real homebrew titles you'd want to play
but they seem to have faded away
very big Amiga vibes from them in their games so I always thought they were "fine"
speaking of NG anyone playing FF:CotW right now? I need matches for a vid and the lobby is deader than @ocean phoenix when he sees charcoal
Damn that's cool. Looks like I missed out.
Unlike with propane, I never miss out on that.
play Last Hope: Pink Bullets. Its on NGCD. So unlike the carts its not copy protected so its....out there
I can get on an play after like 11:30 if you still need footage
ill lyk...I almost have enough
game is a vibe. Mechanics are great. Overall stability and back end...good thing they are beta testing it
I can’t wait. I’m a little sad we aren’t getting a new KOF. But I’ll happily take a new garou
I am sure new KOF will come
I am glad Garou is back
so long as they fix this ass online netcode
I am good. One more match and I have enough raw
Surely it’s rollback, no?
in matches its fine...lotta server errors currently
ahh ok
ooh I didn’t know there was an NGCD version. I believe I have the Dreamcast version on my gdemu
and render...that was fun
then no huge reason to play the NGCD one outside of you can
CotW impressions: tight fighting game mechanics, decent presentation...some weird background animations. Online is solid. Menu system is laggy AF but thankfully in game there is seemingly zero lag
def feels like a beta
I mean, if it exists, I have to acquire it because….i just have to
New Fatal Furv is here!
haha thanks for catching that
Nah, it was just your image is too cropped. I was being a jerk.
lol thats what I mean...I didnt notice the Y was trailing off the thumb
so you actually were useful for once! 🤣
FINALLY
It is beautifull for the Neogeo 😎
On the Neo Geo core, is there a way to get rid of the black bars on some of the games. I read up that some Neo games are 320x224 and some (later ones) are 304x224. Causing them to have black bars on the sides. Can the screen fill in the space? I have a Unico 26in 4:3 that I am using with this?
What are you using for scaling? Integer or non integer? I would think non integer would fill the whole display resolution. (Though tbh I use an external scaler so I'm not sure exactly what the behavior is)
I thought you could set the resolution to increase or decrease from the osd
I noticed there are some arcade cores that have a cpu turbo function. Is it possible to implement such a thing in the Neo Geo core? There are a lot of games that would benefit from it, mainly the Metal Slug series.
I mainly play in 304 width; playing SamSho RPG in the intro while the background goes all the way to 320 the character sprites only show up to 304 and looks weird since you can see the background behind the incomplete sprite.
I do believe there is a fairly old Turbo build of the core lurking out there…might be on the forum
How old?
like a couple years at least I think
Metal Slug 2 is the main one that needed something like a turbo mode, but it got X that fixed those issues, and I believe there's also a rom hack of 2 that also fixes those issues.
I mean, MS2 was infamous for that, but the rest of the games have plenty of slowdowns, though not as severe...
We’ve had this discussion before and will not happen. Reason is
- The core is pretty much full
- Turbo feature can cause issues. ( which it also did on the turbo builds)
Btw, the turbo builds are based on before the core went through a synchronous redesign
Thanks for the answer.
Damn good answer. Thanks, dude!
AES > MVS, prove me wrong.
I can’t plug 4 cartridges into an AES
Imagine getting up and down after every game
no guys he used the > symbol, he’s just implying alphabetical order
aes runs at the wrong speed
No it doesn’t!
Say what now
Great Neo Geo mod, or Greatest Neo Geo mod? Neither.
That's f'ing awesome!
This isn't the spicy off topic you can't talk like that
Oh, sorry, how about, that's f'ing awesome!
Oh come on, it's clearly the best AES mod to ever happen. I'm already modding all my AES' with it!
Nice, just did a playthrough (it's only level one so only takes like 5mins or less). It's got some demoscene vibes with the intro and the flames.
What happened to that vengeance hunters?
Carts shipped late last year/early this, dev sold out but SAG had some still available last I saw.
I enjoy it!
Ah you bought one? It's on multiplatform right?
Yeah I have it on AES & Steam. It is on a few consoles as well IIRC
i have a cart. the game is ok, has some battletoads vibes how you can hit enemies in the air and stuff. Unfortunately the cart never gives away its attract mode. So if i put it in my 4 slot neogeo, the machine cyles through games and stops on the vengence hunters game and never goes back to any of the other games in the multislot.
for neogeo enthusiasts not playing well in a real machine is a bit of an issue for me but hey you can call me picky or anal if you want 🙂
to clarify - a multislot neogeo plays the demos/attracts from each cart that is inserted in the machine, and loops around them. Vengence hunters blocks that and the demo/attract loop is stuck on the vengence hunters cart.
Hey, did you let the team know about this issue? I've passed them some stuff they are fixinig in the next patch
it would good if they are aware of this so that they can maybe get it in the patch
it seems like all my problems were MVS related too, the AES side seems pretty good now that I cleaned my slots again
i haven't mentoned it, mostly because there isn't any way to patch a cart, so my problem wouldn't get fixed anyway 😛
it wasn't cheap
Of course there is. I've already run two patches. It goes on an SD card and fits in the side.
Please mention it
to the team, I can do so if you want
what method are you notifying them? email or feedback link somewhere? i can let them know but also happy if you do
i didn't know the cart had a sdcard slot, i kind of just plugged it into my machine without noticing
I posted in their discord, you can join or I can tell you what they say. I cut/pasted your conscern, which in my mind is very valid and needs to be fixed. I don't know if it will make it ot this patch, but hopefully the next one
thanks i'll join the discord
Is there a difference between the platforms? Like Neo geo has extra stuff or maybe updates via an sd card. I'm just guessing it could even do that of course.
Just played it on steam and the playing mechanics are very good. Seriously piss poor graphics options though. The filters are worthless and it doesn't even have smoothing so it looks blocky and rough. They are taking the piss for £20, let alone £400 for a cart. Cheeky mofo's.
Even the art style with leaves blowing is worse than Ghosts and Ghouls. For a modern neo geo game it lacks polish.
pretty much any new game on a neogeo cart will be expensive, also it looks pretty nice on a CRT in a cab. I've got a preorder on final vendetta which isn't cheap either, i hear they're shipping now but i haven't recieved my cart yet
I’m convinced the only reason why Neo geo carts are hundreds of dollars is because people are willing to pay for it. I’d love to know the actual manufacturing costs of a Neo geo repro cart.
I believe there are zero differences between the versions except that on modern systems you get those screen settings which of course on AES/MVS you do not.
Wow, I couldn't disagree more! I think it looks fantastic on real NG hardware! I'm not sure how it looks on Steam/PS4 but since it's designed to run on a 25 year old system, I think it kicks ass! Compare it to a contemporary, like Final Vendeta, I think the art blows it away!
I like the game mechanics and it has cool characters design. I just meant the intro and tree blowing effects looked underwhelming. Maybe on a CRT is looks better.
When you are charging £400 you want all the glitz. I watched a review and the guy had to take apart the case to revert the label so when it plugged in it wasn't back to front lol.
Is there anyway to get y/c composite support in the neo geo core? As in aes displays perfectly with composite, but mvs has artifacts.
I think today they don't have the advantage of mass producing something for neogeo. Back in the day there were more neogeo "customers" because the arcade machines were everywhere so they could use whatever company was mass producing the carts. I grew up in the blue mountains in australia and there was a neogeo arcade machine at my local video shop. If there was one at my local shops in a tiny town there must of been a LOT of them world wide.
Today it's just enthusiasts like us
Yeah great point.
I forget just how STACKED those carts are
the amount of rom chips in neogeo carts was kind of insane back in the day
But I think selling out to a multiplatform has slapped faithful Neo geo customers in the gonads. I mean it's just greedy.
what do you mean?
You can pay £20 for a digital download that plays identical to the Neo geo.
The whole point neo geo was so expensive before, was it had no competition from any other console for its arcade quality.
It just seems to me a massive money spinner
It will eventually be playable on Mister
Neo geo is now inferior hardware to modern consoles.
Rich kids console
If you get the MVS version, you might have to change the label side because each MVS motherboard handles the cart differently. The fact that they made it able to be swapped is actually a perk and something other companies need to do as well. I think from the lack of understanding these things you might not be super familiar with NeoGeo hardware so it's understandable, but trust me, it's pretty top notch as far as hardware goes.
You can say that for anything. There is a NES game that is $40,000 USD, and the game isn't that good and you can definitly play it on MiSTer, a Pi, hell, my phone from 10 years ago. Also, I think they've built some protections in, like Neo Dev and you may not be abel to play this on MiSTer for many years, if ever.
Neo Geo was originally a rich kid’s console and now it’s a rich adult’s console lol.
Actually considering the price point it was more like a rich adult’s console and it just continued being that
There's something ironic about how the MVS Neo Geo was meant to save money with the interchangeable cartridges, while the AES Neo Geo was expensive because of the hardware and cartridges.
Really highlights how different arcades and consoles were.
Also, really puts into perspective how crazy purpose built/single game cabs are.
Yeah it's a crazy world.
I still dont get why game devs are obsessed relasing these retro pixelated graphics when they could make them look so much better. They then give you crap crt filters to imitate an old TVs. Tmnt shredder revenge is a prime example.
Modern retro games don’t look good because they aren’t under the forced constraints of the old hardware, so despite their efforts, unless their game is like 16 megabits it’s going to look modern but trying to look retro.
Not accounting for the program/emulator/framework
Xenocrisis got this right.
Although Demons of Asteborg (sp?) was also designed around real hardware their ROM was significantly larger than games of the era so it looks off to me.
I think they are missing a trick with these modern 2d type games. They need to evolve them and have pretty modern art style The old pixel look is just crap on new tvs. Every genre improves graphics, not goes in reverse. Plus a widescreen aspect prevents it being used on a crt. It frustrates me how bad they look.
They do look bad. Agreed.
Eh, everyone likes different things. I like it all, from the new TMNT to the Streets of Rage 4 look. Just keep them coming!
True
Ice palace 2 has the right blend and definitely has its own style.
The new TMNT beat ‘em up isn’t good
It’s amazing!!!!!
It’s very good but unfortunately too short
Classic Robby.
Bruh, it has a boss song that's just so damn good I listen to it on my playlist lol
||We Aint' Come Lose by Raekwon and Ghostface Killah? SO GOOD!
T-U-R-T-L-E POWER!!!
Which one
Some years ago, 2022 maybe, I remember a member of this group share MRA for all neo geo games. They are great but since they are a little old, does anyone knows if they get updates? Thanks
That one is abandoned
Will never get updated
It was a fork of the main core
If you want similar experience, create MGL files
Thanks for the answer, they were (are) great !
Yeah, I have MGL files set to boot a version of the core that’s configured to be arcade
Sorry for my dumb question but Unfortunately I don’t know how to do it. Is there anywhere that I could look for to learning how to create MGL files?
https://github.com/wizzomafizzo/MiSTer_Favorites can help automate creating them
not sure if it lets you add a <setname> tag, which is what determines if the MGL uses different config files than the normal ones for neogeo core
It doesn’t, but it sets up most of the MGL for you.
How random
Betrayed constantly. First final fantasy and now this
First time i played The Last Blade was on an emulator, sadly didn't get to see it in the arcades (unlike samurai shodown which was everywhere and many many other neogeo games). My friend and I loved it though, it has such a great feel to it. They clearly spent a lot of time making the game fun to play and paid attention to how hits should feel. The special moves are also very friendly to those with SF2 skills (which was very common back then).
Does anyone remember exactly why the .MRA file loading for Neo Geo MVS games that Blackwine did never made it into the official core? It has been a few years and I can't remember what exactly happened there.
iirc, sorg flat out rejected it and MGL files were created as a solution. I use MGL files for all my console games so I’m happy with this solution tbh
Hmm, I wonder what Sorg's rationale was there
Oh wow, yeah I’m happy it ended up that way too. I use MGL to launch all my games.
My guess as to the reason why was that it was an unnecessary addition and would confuse end users between using MRA files and a standard set like the Dark Rom set
MGL files can be placed in the arcade folder so I think that was the rationale
What would MRA loading bring to Neo Geo. I’ve also got my entire Neo Geo set loading with MGL and using the Neo Geo core with setname variant so it’s arcade settings are applied,
Yeah all in the arcade folder too
maybe MRA bypasses the need for using setname?
For anyone with a cabinet it would have everything automatically downloaded and set up the same way as every other arcade is probably the main one
Ohhh nice makes sense.
Update all is a godsend for grabbing everything needed to go off and play the arcade cores, it makes it so simple. If we didn't have this then I imagine for a lot of users arcades wouldn't get a look in. It is great to not have to do anything and have them all there at your fingertips, ready to play.
Update_all makes the mister so much more accessible. The idea that I would have to manually track and update cores from a ton of different devs is just overwhelming - it’s what kept me away from the mister for so long. update all just takes that road block away
The base update script does that. Update all just allows you to tack on external scripts such as downloading bios files and name roms.
Which is a massive help for people who aren’t familiar with that.
Like I ain’t grabbing all the mame roms lol
yeah, I didn’t know that when I first got my mister. if you google “keep mister up to date” update all is the first hit
Before the was the BIOS DB I couldn't get a load of cores to boot properly, including the Neo Geo, which has 5 files you need. I even learned basic python to make a script to check my folders had the right files in there. Having all the correct BIOS files grabbed is so helpful and saves so many potential problems with people having the wrong files.
Yeah, it will be nice when saturn and cdi are in there
I am going to see what I can do about that, it hasn't been maintained for a good while and there are a few systems missing these days
oh right, scv and jag. Yeah, I guess there are a few
STV is in there now, at least (I think)
There are also a load of computer cores that will hopefully make it into Main as well soon that need obscure BIOS files
Yeah it was always kind of weird to me that the decision was to make neogeo a console core in terms of organising games, when in reality hardly anyone had the console, it was mostly an arcade system. It's the reason why the AES is more expensive than the MVS, there were way more arcades than consoles produced for neogeo. Consolized MVS's are in abundance while AES (console) are expensive.
CPS changer was a console version of CPS1 but we still get all the CPS games in the arcade folder 😛
At the end of the day the differences between the MVS and AES are superficial anyway, so it feels kind of pointless to pull hairs over how the core should handle the ROMs.
i'm not really complaining about how the core handles roms, just how we decided to organise the games
in the mister menu
Though treating the core like an AES system does make slightly more sense since the core also supports Neo Geo CD.
we have all the other mame games in arcade by default, except neogeo is by default in console, and i may be a nitpicky guy, but neogeo is arcade to me lol
Because AES and MVS are so similar, I am more curious why the ability to also load the games via MRA was rejected and wound up being in a fork. Maybe there are space issues in the core? I don't know, but since if is clearly doable to add support I am wondering the rationale behind rejecting the PR
i can only assume because MRAs usually point to unique rbfs (cores), so like CPS1/2 etc have a seperate core per game due to minor differences in the boards
although they can't be that different, as i own a darksoft CPS2 multi which is 1 A motherboard + a B board that is modified
I don't think that is the issue, the MVS boards all play all the games via carts
thats what i mean though - because it plays the games via carts, its a single rbf for neogeo
It isn't a situation where certain games had daughter boards etc
i don't think sorg wanted multiple MRAs for a single RBF (core)
Yeah, so in Blackwine's fork the mra files all play off the same Neo Geo core that is a tweaked version of the one in Main (how different I don't know)
Lots of other arcade cores are the one .rbf and multiple games as mra files running off it
hmm is there? are you sure?
Like the IREM cores, and what STV is doing
ah yeah you're right irem is
Yeah, it’s pretty common with arcade games.
Fairyland Tale is like 4 games, aren’t cps 1 and 2 both single rbf files?
neogeo was before all that though so maybe its a case of those cores not having consoles
but yeah still kind of a weird decision to me, considering neogeo was my faverote arcade 🙂
literally no one i knew owned a neogeo console growing up, i only saw them in gaming magazines and drooled over them
I don't mind playing the games as if it is a console, but I see the use case for wanting them as arcade games with mra files like all the other cores as well, especially if you had a MiSTer in an arcade cabinet, and since update all would just grab all the games for you
yeah exactly and update all doesn't grab neogeo games as a result, even though they're all in that same mame collection that the other games are grabbed from
maybe it's because the core needs the unencrypted roms which arn't the mameset
Well, from Sorgs point of view, he sees neogeo as a console core vs arcade core.
Added benefit is probably rom patching being easier
isn't it the same?
Is there some way for you to distribute your setup with a script?
Uhhhh no cause I am a lazy man. Maybe I just zip it up and post here?
I don’t have it for all the games, just the 100 I have on my system, is that ok?
Sure that would be a good example of how it works anyway.
I use <setname> so I can have custom config to default the core into arcade mode, bind controls in an arcade stick layout, and so I can seperate the save files as sharing between console and arcade corrupts the save.
Additionally I keep all the files in the same NEOGEO folder so no need to duplicate. I did do a symlink so that the NeoGeoMVS folder redirects to NEOGEO for the games and help folders.
Could probably use the samedir flag for that these days
I remember why I didn't use that. The save files have to be in a different directory.
If you play the same game as a console and then arcade game (or the reverse) the save file gets corrupted
Ahhh, yeah that makes sense. Carry on 🙂
I also use this setup but i noticed that compared to other multigame arcade cores it does only create one config file, not one for every game/MRA. Do you know is thats an issue for saving the soft dips settings?
Don’t think it’s an issue. Dip settings are typically saved per game and not core. At least I think so anyways
exactly, if there is no config file per game how can they be saved per game?
Hmmm, good question. Maybe it’s saved as part of the game save?
No, those are only part of the memory cards used like with the real hardware. The arcade side soft dips are normally saved into SRAM of the board, the part where the battery is.
Maybe someone else knows how the soft dip saves work on the arcade cores.
Thanks for the explanations, I was way off haha
Donald McDonald!
Ronald McDonald was an OK guy
Played NeoGeo, no known pedo events
Really 2 opposites of what you'd expect
Did they release a rom that you can buy?
Nope, only STEAM or Switch/PS4...
Or the Neo Geo cartridge.
Man that's cool, but they are still tryiing to sell the game, not cool to pirate rigth out of the gate.
That's why it sucks that you can't buy a rom.
well I assume the ROM is yanked off the Steam version, so you can buy a ROM!
Technically, yes.
You could try asking in the handhelds thread. But if you are having issues with that core you are not the only one. I don't think it should have been public in the state it is now.
ok, in fact i'm launching it on CRT, but it starts like having a "bad resolution", i've got black screen, can i manage to change settings especially resolution without going into OSD ?
I don't think it works on CRT yet, maybe I am wrong. But as I can barely use it over HDMI even if you do get video the core is kinda broken.
Ok, thanks 😉
My Beloved.
No, you need to go to Jotego’s Discord or file a bug on his GitHub
That core is unofficial and not affiliated with the MiSTer project
Ok, thanks.
You know what kind of being right is the best?
Oh, so you can buy the Steam version, and pull the rom from that?
No, you need to decompile it and know the magic 'word', depending of your country and local laws, it is either legal or not.
Ah, so no dice then. Bummer.
I feel like if you buy the Steam version, you are good to go to pull it for MiSTer. I just feel bad for this small company as I'm sure this ROM will get leaked pretty fast.
I wouldn't know how to decompile it anyway.
Would the magic word be “mellon”?
Open gate
I was taught in elementary school that the magic word is "please!"
Sometimes referred to as "pwetty pwease". 🥺
A demo for the NeoGeo MVS/AES
hoffman / hooverphonique / gigabates / emoon / made
Download available here..
is it any good?
There are quite a few steam games that download console roms with the steam version just gotta know which ones and where to look for it
Its how I got the nes versions of Alwa's Awakening and Micro Mages
Alwa's Awakening you can just buy the ROM itself though
2 birds 1 purchase
Xenocrisis on Steam is a native version, so no rom, though the DC, NeoGeo, NeoGeo CD, Genesis, and N64 versions have the ROM available for purchase on bitmap bureau's shop.
Astebros and Demon's of Asteborg have the rom in the game's directory. Tanglewood for MD also has the rom available.
also check the directory for Micro Mages, there is now a second rom with different levels.
trying to get this running on MiSTer. its in darksoft format in the download from pouet: https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=103936
any idea what needs to be added to romsets.xml for that?
Does it need to be in the romset XML if it's Darksoft?
Maybe I'm just assuming Darksoft = . neo
Here
<romset name="vaporous" altname="Vaporous - A NeoGeo MVS/AES Demo" publisher="The Twitch Elite" year="2025" ram="1"/>
Theres a .neo in the zip download also, in neoSD folder
Thanks!
Nice that they stashed a .neo file in there too, I didn't notice that when browsing through it before
when i doubt, read the readme i guess 😅
This is the prefered emulation method. The fantastic core by furrtek
is cycle accurate and best suited to running the demo. It's so good
we used it to debug our demo.
Simply use the included .neo file.```
definitely prefer this method with the darksoft set for MiSTer. the .neo format is double the size for some reason 🤔
Is this Vaporous any good?
I think neo is not zipped
As a PSA, you don't want your Neo Geo ROMs zipped, as if you do the fast load feature won't work and your games will load noticeably slower.
Hey Robby I sent you a pm about using MGL files. Perhaps you didn’t see it? Or perhaps my question was too stupid 🫠
Oh sorry, I didn’t respond
Uhhh lemme go see it
Ok so, the MGL files I created expect a folder called “NeoGeoMVS” in your games directory.
The only thing those MGL files do is utilize the setname command to give the core a new name when using that MGL file. That way you can give the core new options to set it up as an arcade core. Save files aren’t interchangeable between AES and MVS modes.
You can open MGL files in a text editor to see what they do.
I suggest you do a symbolic link from your NEOGEO folder to NeoGeoMVS. So you don’t need to copy over any games.
You need to take it slow, I'm absolutely not versed in the technicalities 😬
So I need a folder called "NeoGeoMVS". Since I don't have any idea how to make a symbolic link (or what it really entails), is it OK to just put my games there directly?
Also, when I open the MGLs I can see that the game names end with ".neo" is this the format I need for the games in order for things to work?
And perhaps it's useful to give a little context for my use case.
I'm using Mister in my arcade cabinet with an Irken JAMMA expander. It's working great for arcade cores, but for Neo Geo the controls don't work for both players. The JAMMA expander defaults to "keyboard" setting which I think is based on the standard MAME keyboard mapping, so that might not be a thing for Neo Geo?
It is possible to switch to a gamepad setting on the expander, but it's not ideal since it means opening the machine and fiddling with the PCB. So my hope is that by using the MGL method it will be possible to just "plug and play" without the need to switch modes on the expander.
Have to do that anyways to enable the user lock
Sorry, have to do what?
ok, it is an edge case, but with the menu shortcut of holding start for 2s, one is not able to select classic chunli in sfz2, as it will not pipe it through outside of the user lock enabled mode
Yes that really is an edge case 🙂
Making a symlink is really easy using winscp: #help message
.neo is the easiest format to work with, single file per game.
Looks like they're needed for neogeo mgls: https://github.com/wizzomafizzo/mrext/blob/main/docs/systems.md#neo-geo-mvsaes
Hello, can someone explain to me how to install the Metal Slug 2 Turbo Rom on the Mister Pi?
just put it with the rest of them? Nothing special about it.
When I search for the ROM, I find a file named mslug2t. But it doesn't work.
isn't it part of the merged metal slug set?
oh I see it. I have Metal Slug 2 Turbo (mslug2t).neo - maybe that helps
Where to find the merged metal slug set?
i'm sure it's archived somewhere
We aren't allowed to ask for where to find roms or give that information. Best we can do is give vague direction. But yes, I'm sure it must be archived somewhere online. wink wink
I'm very sorry. I didn't want to tempt anyone to commit a crime here! I'm really stupid and can't find the Roma. hahahaha

Little Game for Neogeo (ported from Genesis)
https://kakoeimon.itch.io/super-power-kick
Is there any sort of technical limitation that would prevent adding the link functionality for the like 3 or so Neo games that use it? It would be funny to hook up two misters to run 4p kizuna encounter
Hmm, layman thoughts on this one, but how did this work on original hardware? What sort of port and cable were used?
Maybe it could be wired up up to the iO but wonder how you would connect the two. Maybe need a special SNAC?
Ah OK, so a complex one.
Actually looks pretty simple. The schematic shows each of the 2 players adds an alternate controller. J1 pin 1 controls which controller is active (alternate or not - applies to both sets). J1 pin 3 looks like it is used for detection if the 4 card is present. It forces button A on (I think) for default player or button B on for alternate player again for both sets. Just need to know how J1 bits 1 and 3 are controlled and hook it all up.
Just looked at the link. Yep. J1 is controlled by https://wiki.neogeodev.org/index.php?title=Memory_mapped_registers#REG_POUTPUT that. Looks trivial.
Oh, so this is less of a way to link two consoles and more of a way to players 3 and 4 to games?
That is what it looks like to me.
The bottom might be showing that one console is generating the video for two monitors. ie Only one machine is running, but using the screens and buttons of two machines.
I think there is more than one way to 'link'. I believe some Neo Geo games did system link through a 3.5 milimeter jack on the carts
I was looking through the Glossary here and came across the "Link-Up Feature" info below.
...................
Link-Up Feature
Several of the early Neo Geo AES releases featured a socket on top of the home cartridge that allowed two home systems with the same cartridge to be linked together for...
yeah, this was the approach I was thinking of
I think the unibios is already set up to allow the expanded multiplay for those games (and kizuna encounter) if the relevant hardware is on hand
but if it's mostly just adding the equivalent of extra controllers to the existing setup that's even better
So Kizuna Encounter uses a single system with multi-plexed 4 player adapter. The others use a cable between systems. Two wires at 62500 baud seems doable via Snac.
And it does look like the multi-plexed version is already implemented https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/NeoGeo_MiSTer/blob/master/neogeo.sv#L291
"oBC,Multitap,No,NEO-FTC1B,NeoTris;",
Would this need a new bespoke SNAC adaptor?
I didn't dig very deep. It looks like it needs one out and one in line. I would assume almost any adapter could hook up 2. The diagram seems to show them daisy chained. So more than 2 might require something specific. It depends on what the protocol does.
Maybe the GBC link cable SNAC a good candidate?
Possibly
@solar patio, Is it possible a 8x loading speed on the Core for Neo Geo CD games, like Neo SD Loader?
I don`t know. My first reaction would be probably, but I assume paul (who did the 4x) would have if it were possible. I seem to recall him saying it was not stable above 4. Maybe MiSTer Main struggles to keep up with it or there is something else making it unstable. Or maybe it would work better after he ported the clock sync changes.

Does anybody have any idea why the Neo Geo core would suddenly be gone from my MiSTer? I have one update all recently but I didn't change anything at all in the ini file
I found it, the name changed to SNK Neo Geo for some reason.
Names.txt maybe
LOL. They changed the name for the Sega Master System to Sega System E
wtf
Ah, this seems the Arcade Master System.
It's this a combined core?
Same goes for Neo Geo Arcade = SNK NeoGeo MVS
well the neo geo core has always been combined, but its lived in consoles
arcade_NeoGeo: SNK NeoGeo MVS
arcade_SMS: SEGA System E
I removed this nonsense
Names are back to normal
yeah, names.txt just felt like it was always just confusing things
I roll my own names dot tee ecks tee
This is not a names.txt issue. Names.txt has entries for arcade_neogeo, arcade_sms for three years, but also entries for neogeo and sms. The names.txt got alphabetically resorted recently and it is an issue of the MiSTer-UI that it picks the first [xyz]_sms entry to match the core name that does not even start with "arcade". I will remove these two arcade entries for now, they might be old relics, but this will stay an issue if there are cores being named in that fashion. It needs to be fixed in the MiSTer-UI.
In general it would be helpful to raise such issues properly instead of complaining in such an uneducated manner.
I think maybe I both wasn't clear and that you're misunderstanding the context around this comment as it's not a complaint.
Names.txt, when troubleshooting, can confuse things (thinking specifically of Genesis and Genesis(Old)). Because I don't run it, it can add an additonal translation layer when trying to get to the bottom of an issue. That isn't to say that I think it's not a worthwhile addition to the platform, but it can make troubleshooting more confusing depending on the situation.
I apologize if that comment offended you as that was certainly not my intention.
I agree that names.txt can make things confusing when people are not fully aware of it and just auto-download it with update_all.
As for feeling offended, I apologize for the outburst, it was unfair to aim that at you and there was indeed a misunderstanding. My frustration is based on the stark limitations of the MiSTer-UI making it difficult to keep a nice and coherent set of names that are not scrolling. I do my best to research what a good name would be - which is a matter of taste, too and can be argued over - and how to keep naming consistent. I look in here on a regular note to find out if there are issues or new cores, because most people do not contact me, I stumble over them when somebody complaints or gets snarky here on the Discord - which happens much more often than any positive remarks of course. So well, that gets quite frustrating at times, but I am glad that Moondandy at least tags me when there is an update needed.
I'll start tagging you as well. I didn't make the connection that you were the dev on names.txt (or if I had, it had left my brain). I try to be good about tagging folks for that stuff. Apologies again for any misunderstanding my comment, threep - thanks for the work you're doing 🙂
I would appreciate that. No hard feelings, sorry again 🙂
@blissful pelican tag you’re it!
How have I not posted here before.
Anyways, damn, this core absolutely rocks
Been playing SNK vs. Capcom today. Amazing game. My eyes almost popped out cuz the visuals are just so good.
Imagine playing this back in the day ... at home.
So more impressive than the other consoles at the time.
History has probably been rewritten, but SNK vs Capcom was largely disliked when it came out. Most of us were disappointed when compared to what Capcom did with their side of the deal. It’s a weird game.
BUT: SNK was almost flat broke at the time, so they did what they could. It eventually found its audience.
The garbage bins all over the world!
It was a pretty broken game when it launched, but I still love it
Still broken
I thought that one of the rom hacks balanced it better
Yeah, I love the game for fun casual matches. But it's pretty broken on a competitive level. The visuals are phenomenal though.
Why is it broken on a competitive level
iirc there are top tiers that are just severely broken
Tell me then so I can win plz
Athena!
Ok thanks bro
tierlist I found on the super combo page
Top: Geese, Shin Akuma > Zero, Demitri, Orochi Iori
High: Red Arremer, Tessa, Chun-Li > Akuma, Terry > Guile, Kim, Mars People
I have led Robby astray.
awesome, thanks bro
It’s ok, it’s not like I’d know any better
Also sorry, I could’ve looked this up myself. I appreciate the responses though.
Never stumbled across a rom hack for SVC Chaos.
I have SVC Chaos Plus Hack 1 and Hack 2
look at him aura farming over here
well you are a farmable low level mob
That was pretty good lol
charged up energy from restraining myself in off topic
I guess those are just former bootlegs with the mid bosses unlocked. But without further balancing tweaks.
ahh, I thought it was more than that
Made by Cat in the Hat?
I'm trying out the 8Bitdo arcade stick and mapping the buttons. But the B button always is inserting coins and not action button. What's going on?
Do you have it set to xinput mode or switch mode?
xinput
Weird. I have the same stick and haven't had an issue like that before with neo geo. Might want to reset player assignments and then remap in the core.
I did it and the same problem
do you have another controller, keyboard, mouse plugged in at all?
have you already plugged/unplugged it?
Only the stick
Yes
Did you map the buttons in the menu before you launched the core?
It’s an issue local to you
+1 to what JesusFish suggested, but also confirm in the core menu that the controller type is set to Joystick.
That one seems to get people
Its set to joystick
I notice i have the problem in the B button.
Only in neo geo core
Delete your controller config for the Neo geo core in media/fat/config/input/
Ill do it that
I was mapping and i noticed lb and b button have the same behaviour
If i put jump en lb, b is jump too
Only thing I can suggest is the usual stuff like making sure you map it in main first (finishing the entire mapping process), and then mapping it in the Neo Geo core afterwards.
Also makes sure you didn't accidentally remap one of those buttons in the replace button option within the core.
Oh yeah that’s probably it.
If you are a fan of pain and broken games, the neo geo turbo core has returned and is in the alt core database.
Cc @blissful pelican , something else for next time names.txt is updated
Man, it breaks everything but one game, not sure that’s a good idea at all
oh alt core database
I’m going to yell “TOO BAD” at the first person who reports issues with the Neo Geo turbo core
LOL perfect
I laughed out loud at that loool
Just Metal Slug 1 or all the metal slugs?
I think 1 and 2?
Sick 2 is the only game that needs it. Where is the alt core database?
It’s in update_all
Press up to access the script options
Thank you!
Please don’t thank me, I appreciate it though.
metal slug 1 is the only one that runs without glitching
ms2 runs fine, but there are occasional glitches in the big sprites
@ocean phoenix I wonder if you could help me I download a ROM set for neo geo but for some reason there isn't an option for loading individual roms it's just load ROM set and when I do that and pick a rom it just takes me to blank white screen 😔
What menu does it take you to
Just the folder of roms
Like if you back up a folder what is it called?
Possibly, yes
Is the core the same as the one that’s on the analogue pocket open FPGA? That one I find works pretty well
Ahh well that's an easy fix at least
What file format are your games in?
no idea
@ebon depot sorry can’t link to that stuff here
Oh shit sorry
Cheers mate appreciate it 🙂
I am not a Neo Geo guy but the final burn set looks good? Try grabbing a game from the Darksoft set and see if that works.
I have darksoft it works as far as I know unless something changed
Thank you Robby! ||Ha! That'll show him! ||
I'll give that look cheers 🍻
Hi all. Just set up my first Mister. I have a NeoGeo big red four slot that I’m planning to put it in.
Wanted to ask if anyone has found a hack to boot directly into a NeoGeo game as I understand the core doesn’t support auto boot natively.
Maybe some MGL shenanigans?
Being very new I have no idea what that is lol.
@ocean phoenix is the resident MGL guru. I don't know if something like that could auto boot though.
If not I can always go NFC but be nice not to have to depend on that.
Uhhh maybe set this in the ini:
bootcore=neogeo
and name the game you want to auto load “boot.rom”
Yeah doesn’t work. I can boot to the core using the exact core option but the core itself doesn’t seem to look for boot.rom
Darn
Being in a dedicated cab I don’t really want the machine starting on a text menu.
Understandable
I can workaround with NFC, either way it’s all fun and very cool.
Hey Joel, check out the super attract mode script (SAM script), set it to only use neogeo games. Also i made a feature request to the author so you can map a button to "next game", i map that to the next game button on the neogeo and it works a charm
its like having a multislot neogeo with a slot for every game :). Also the script stops cycling games when you start playing one so it works really well (and it can start cycling them again based on a timer after you stop playing one)
You can get the script to download from the update_all script settings
@robust temple can you make Super Attract Mode instantly launch on boot up?
well you can set the timer as low as you want so yes, but i haven't checked in a while as to if the time between games is seperate or not
so the behvious might be that you get the mister menu and 1 second later a neogeo game starts
If so then that’s a great idea. Might give him what he wants.
you can see the commands the script sends on the bash prompt so theoretically you could put a simple bash script on the linux part to do it for a certain game, seperate to the SAM script
i've got it setup like that in a real neogeo also so i can attest it works really well 🙂
Neo Geo isn’t good
IT’S AMAZING!!!

We really pushed the cabinet around to the locations. It took 2 days and we went a total of 8 miles. My brother Josh ...
This sounds promising @robust temple thanks for the info
Moving the discussion here (what is left of it). We are thinking about moving the turbo core out of the alt core database. We could put it in the WIP database. We could pin it here (and the forums). We could do both. The thinking is that having any update_all-enjoyer having access to a core that honestly barely works is silly. Especially since the experience is not anywhere near the n64 and PSX turbo cores.
I suspect most folks don’t care - but I also suspect some have strong opinions
I personally don't want to pin it, I mean if people want it I will, but I don't like directing people to something that's extremely broken. Even if we put up instructions and explanations, people won't read it.
It's a fun little curio that works with one game. If there can be a Turbo core made with more stability then amazing, but promoting a broken build because it somehow makes one game run better isn't a good precedent.
all in my opinion of course, if people disagree or I'm wrong then no problem
Strongly agree with robby, don't think cores in that state are a good direction for mister to go in or do the project any favors.
https://github.com/ajgowans/alt-cores/pull/5 Too many smarter folks agreeing it was a bad idea
its like the power glove but Baaderer
He said the power glove was bad, but he meant good, but it wasn't good, but he acted like it wasn't bad
So I really dunno
exactly
NEO GEO is as is... the system of power... never will be another NEOGEO... it has slowdowns... but these slowdows are the feeling... NEOGEO, the power of FEELING.
Nah, these slowdowns are there because they pushed the hardware too far. Never liked that. The really good coder could deliver amazing results within the limit of the machines.

Hi! I do not see the H/V adjust option (a very cool option !) in the latest stable NeoGeo core. Has you PR ever went through?
I had a convo with Sorg, It got rejected even though the code was fine.
What was his issue with it?
That's a shame, this is a very useful feature....
About H/V adjustment: it's applicable only for Arcade and other non-TV cores as they originally have no TV modes originally. For Console cores it's required to make a correct matching to real HW video output.
This is what he wrote
Are there examples you can show where it is a clear benefit in the core? He maybe doesn't get your usecase.
He seems dead set on not acknowledging Neo Geo was an arcade system too
If someone can provide examples where this is a tangible benefit he may be swayed, he probably doesn't get the valid usecases (which I don't know either to be fair)
My CRT does not have a service menu and the output is shifted to the left side for all cores. This option was very good for my use case, even for non-arcade cores. And this is just an option....
Then a RGB shifter is your only chance to adjust that.
Or just use crappy composite out, it's mostly spot on for the correct video output. 🤣
i happened to open my crt yesterday and found a variable resistor on the neck board
figure it’s for manual adjustment of the h position
I wrote this on the forum too but maybe here is more traffic ...
Regarding broken Endings on Fatal Fury 3 MVS ( Not CD )
So this is an old topic which even occur on the real cartridges....
Did someone checked if its possible to fix ? It dont happen anytime but today i
cleared FF3 MVS with Terry and after beating Jin Chonshu the game freezes during the dialog....
Tomorrow ill try it on AES
I found something from 2018 someone wrote...maybe this help top fix ?
Quote:
If the game is set on the USA, ASIA or EUROPE bios, the game will reset after defeating Jin Chonrei and you won't get to see the ending, however if the game is set on the JAPAN bios it will work just fine!
[Im using Unibios]
I just saw that post - has no one really done a fix romhack?
I didnt found something in the almighty holy web .. Jesus 🙂
It's one of those name your price things tho..it's not free
I can only find the beta version. For the full game do I have to buy it?
There is only the beta version
So it's not out yet then? I'm confused! I heard it was hitting tomorrow.
It's still beta but it's the full game
It says the files were last updated 63 days ago on the download page. Is that right?
Hmm I dunno but I been playing it and it progresses past where the other version stops
There are also demos for bad dudes and in the hunt being worked on for neo geo
So the date on the title screen of my previous build says February 17th 2025. The new build I just downloaded says June 29th 2025.
Anytime I hear a game is in beta, even if complete, it deters me from seeking it out. I’d rather just wait for the final version but it seems like a lot of newer games are in a perpetual state of beta. Interesting first world conundrum.
Everyone praises something that's free..you find out how they really feel when it's not free .lol
This is a reason why I find myself perpetually wandering back to retro games: they’re finished. A lot of people seem to like perpetually changing games but I’d rather a game stay the same and then I can change games when I want something new.
There’s enough fomo in the world. I also end up playing games on trains, planes, and in the woods and having offline-only games is becoming rare.
One of the reasons I’m staying away from Earthion. I want to support Yuzo San but it’s in a sort of unofficial beta.
The Genesis release is much later to work out bugs from the PC, Switch, PS4/5 release
I.e. Beta
Other people seem to like early access and free beta testing is good for small devs.
Oh for sure!
Big devs need to just pay playtesters and QA folks
Not me 🙂
Hard same
I play a monthly LAN game of Stellaris with a friend and have been doing so for about 8 years. The game is fundamentally different every few sessions. It’s a running joke at this point but it’s insane to me that they just won’t stop messing with the mechanics of that game.
Kind of reminds me of Mechwarrior Online. My buddy and I used to play all the time and they were constantly buffing and nerfing various stuff making it hard to run strat week to week.
I get it more for a competitive game I guess, although I think a game like Marvel vs Capcom 2 proves that you can have a complicated game with a shifting meta without making code changes.
From what I understand about that game and the meta shifts a lot of them came out of people telling Justin Wong he wasn’t allowed to use certain characters so he found broken stuff in “bad” characters lol
Finally got my mister into the cabinet. Working great with SAM for attract.
Yeah but it has to wait 60 seconds when you first turn the machine on. Sam won’t let you change that. Would be nice to have some screen saver or background rather than the menu at the beginning there.
I will forward this until its final version. But one question.
I have the full Neo Geo Collection on my Mister. All are .neo files.
What files should i user from the download link if its final cause there
are noe .neo files ?
try using the neobuilder utility from this page: https://stoneagegamer.com/neosd-downloads.html
Sorry I removed the link to the Double Dragon game. Its legality is questionable but we have zero issues with people saying to go search for Double Dragon One on itch.io
you could make a script to launch a game right away, i might have a go at one actually as i also have a neogeo cab, if i make one i will share instrucitons here. Did you map the "next game" button?
only reason i haven't done it yet is i've still got a real 4 slot in my main neogeo and haven't got around to properly fixing up my second cab that has a mister in it
i've had grand ideas to pimp a neogeo with a full oled/lcd display inplace of the light up marquee also and have it show an image of what the marquee would but for all games in 1 cab 🙂
Also the script author is pretty open to feature requests, so that's another avenue, i requested the next game button function and he added it - https://github.com/mrchrisster/MiSTer_SAM/issues/225
lol shit need an itch.io account
Nice. Yeah I have next game mapped. Just grabbed a Mister Pi from the new batch at TU’s site.
nice, btw from the github readme -
`Usage
Simply wait at the main MiSTer menu for 2 minutes (default setting) without touching the mouse, keyboard, or controller and SAM will start.
Don't want to wait? You can start SAM instantly by launching MiSTer_SAM_on.sh script in your MiSTer's Scripts folder!`
so just have a boot script execute MiSTer_SAM_on.sh on bootup
should remove that 60 second wait time
now which method is the preferred way to auto run a bootup script on the weird mister linux i'm not sure 🙂
There’s some user startup file
You can have scripts run from there
Media/fat/linux/ I think is the folder
robby would know because he is mister linux
It’s true, I use WSL and Debbie Ubintoes
Yes that is what I'd like to work out too
add a line to execute your script to user-startup.sh in /media/fat/linux
Thanks I will give it a try
Did anyone try Double Dragon One on the core? It got two bug fixes today.
Not today's version yet, but I did play a bit of the previous build.
Yes. Worked well
Bought it today on itcho and the ddOne-AES-MVS-Beta2-NeoSD.zip is already in .neo.
This game is so good but tough ... anyone know if there will be a final ... final release ?
Its the full game but demo tagged during the game.
11 years ago today
It still in beta stage, but it full game
11?
yes
I know the Darksoft romset is the set that works but does anyone know what about this set is special? I’d love to do a 1g1r set, my understanding is the Darksoft set has dupes.
But I also don’t know jack about Mame romesets so “go read about it” is a fine response.
Neo Geo cartridges typically have P (68000 program), C (graphics), V (ADPCM samples), M (Z80 program) and S (fix layer) roms. MAME rom sets have those separate roms zipped in a file. One of the advantages here is that a different version of the same game shares most of the data. Often the only different files are the P and M roms, which are very small compared to graphics and sample data. So, say a MAME game parent (MVS) is 80MB, it may only need 1MB of extra data for the other version.
The darksoft/neosd roms have everything in a single .neo file and all data is duplicated between the different versions.
Example estimates:
MAME split - kof98.zip contents: 86MB
MAME split - kof98h.zip contents: 1.25MB (yay)
Darksoft - kof98.neo: 88MB
Darksoft - kof98h.neo: 87MB (oh no)
I don't know exactly why the darksoft roms are "special", but I imagine parsing ZIPs comes with some overhead and the .neo files have everything laid out the way the hardware expects. This is much more suitable for a flash cart or FPGA.
Thank you for this detailed explanation!!
The library is small enough where I could probably just dedupe manually.
I did zips originally and I now have the Darksoft romaet and there’s been no perceivable difference between the two
But the Darksoft rom set lets me manually name the .neo files so it’s much better for me
Most Homebrew for NeoGeo SD are. neo ...I love to have the full set in the same way...Just a psychic thing 😉
if doubling some games at 80mb each is an issue, the issue is you 😉
Just a question. Currently im playing all the KoF from 94 to the last....
On KoF 97 and 98 i noticed some issues in the timing... The music was delayed and
the commands doenst work synced... Is this a known issue ? I installed the Januar Version of the core instead of the latest september and this two games worked perfect again.
Issue noticed on NeoGeo_20250909.rbf
No issues with NeoGeo_20250105.rbf
Oh, good find. Are you able to log an issue for that on GitHub? Sorg or someone may be able to have a look.
Well im not sure if its real. I just post issues i noticed but sometimes its just something else as long its not
found by others too. Im sure there is something wrong cause Neo Geo i play the most because i do own a
real Neo Geo too and on the older cores there was no such issues. So if it is ok i will open a ticket and
in case that there is noting wrong with the core ill close it ?
What is exactly the problem? I'll test it later, because I didn't feel nothing bad before.
Especialy If you load and start the game for the first time after boot up the mister the music is delayed. And sometimes if the enemy is hitting you and you are hitting back nobody do any damage and this is totally untypical in SNK fighting games. Someones Punch or Kick will strike.
I will test when arriving in home
I remember playing KOF 98 few days ago without problems
I made some tests with real aes
But i will test again
Maybe some RAM issues ?
Music delays and hit desync you said ?
yep
How long does the desync take to be noticeable because I played for like 10 minutes and it seems fine on 97
Cant see nothing bad
The desync audio was just for the first seconds...
I guess to clarify this we need to know the difference between the updated Januar and September releases rbf.
Sometimes shit happens even in games. I just asked because i noticed this in both Games playing one after another
Just tested 97 and 98, no issues for me. And I play them very frequently so I think I would have noticed if anything was off.
Maybe a bad rom?
No i use the same roms since years....
But i'll close this topic for now. Maybe just a random bad thing.
I think it’s good
I mean I’m glad you brought it up
Which type of ram are you using?
the.neo roms
Whole SNK Collctidonmincluding Homebrew
Yeah but what mister ram?
ah now i get you.
Its a single ram setup with the purple ram module.
I bought the latest version last year on the ultimate Mister homepage
I use MisterCade in my Neo Geo 4 slot. I wish that someone would develop a way to use the Neo Geo MVS red LED credit board counter with the mister.
I have the same setup, I used to have the white t mold, but everyone told me that it would like better black, so I changed it. On my setup, I have a Neo Geo MVS 1 slot with the Vortex MVS All in One Cart with the MisterCade, using the Unico 26 inch LCD screen. I am hoping someone could make a credit coin counter for the MVS that connects to the mister and I am trying to make it so you can plug in two usb drive into the "Memory Card slot" just in case you wanted to plug in controllers.
Pictures of my Arcade Setup (Both have real hardware and MisterCades)
Very cool, a big blue is my next target to put alongside my NEO-GEO mister rig too, both machines look fantastic.
Hi guys, trying to get romhacks of svc chaos working on my mister. Anyone that could help?
which romhack are you trying?
Svcsplus
I have the .neo file
Do i maybe need newer versions of the bios?
Like a newer mame release?
Seems to be ok here. What bios are you using?
