Don’t feel silly. I’ve been making MiSTer five for almost five years now. I have half a dozen MiSTers. I thought one was dead last week because it would just NOT power on. Because I hadn’t plugged it into the fucking wall 🤣

The sad part is that I can see that happening to me. I love to tweak/restore older audio gear. I can't tell you the amount of time that I've overlooked the simple because I was expecting the worst!

Knight's Chance, which is a quite polished "homebrew" release has a bug on mister where the music won't loop. the rom is legally available to download and purchase from them on itch.io, good game. I let the devs know but they say its fine on real hardware. Not sure if the neo-geo core is under active development or how game specific bugs are handled.

nocturne storm
#

Is it possible to create a MGL file for an alternate Neo Geo setup which save the core settings but uses the same Game Folder?

#

i can do a MGL and have it as Neo Geo MVS with the correct settings to start it as MVS system and all but it also wants a new games folder.

#

i don't want to have double the Neo Geo roms.

limber atlas
#

There is also a file where you can configure .neo

limber atlas
#

Something like this you can do

nocturne storm
limber atlas
#

You need to edit the mgl file

#

How does your MGL file look like?

#

You can make your MGL like this:

<mistergamedescription>
    <rbf>_Console/NEOGEO</rbf>
    <setname>NeoGeoMVS</setname>
</mistergamedescription>
nocturne storm
#

In this case NeoGeoMVS

limber atlas
#

Check if you can change the setname to match NEOGEO

#

And if it will create separate config

#

Otherwise you could symlink

nocturne storm
ocean phoenix
#

setname same_dir is the command you want to give it a new config file but use the same directory.

nocturne storm
#

Nice thanks

ocean phoenix
#

I do that myself actually.

#

Because if you mix console saves and arcade saves it gets corrupted.

nocturne storm
#

Neo Geo is the first i want this. All others like GBC and PCE CD can ahve different directories for the games which makes sense.

nocturne storm
ocean phoenix
#

I do the same with Light-gun games and Wonderswan games that are vertically oriented. Give them different configs files so I can save their settings to always have a light gun be the default control or have the wonder swan video flipped vertically with a more comfortable controller config.

limber atlas
#

Thanks

ocean phoenix
limber atlas
#

Seems to be documented at least, so that is good 🙂

zinc sandal
#

I added it to the mkdocs wiki fairly recently, probably should note it applies to the saves and cheats folders too...

zinc sandal
#

Gotta spread the good word about about MGLs.
Games will be saved. To a directory of your choosing

nocturne storm
ocean phoenix
#

Oh weird

nocturne storm
#

do i need to save the core settings after setting up the dip switch settings?

#

nope that didn't save either

#

i have my core set to Arcade MVS, Unibios to Europe Arcade, go into the service mode and set the level to 1 and the the Blood on and save the cores settings. After a complete reboot the settings are default again.

ocean phoenix
#

I’ve never tweaked the dip settings

#

So I don’t know, sorry

nocturne storm
#

But that is the major selling point of having a MVS version of the core 🙂

#

Maybe @limber atlas can explain how he did it?

limber atlas
#

Did you try Save Configuration in MIster OSD?

#

#

ocean phoenix
zinc sandal
#

Think you need a mem card enabled for it to save unibios settings

#

#

Then save OSD settings 🙂

nocturne storm
zinc sandal
#

Set the mem card option to 'plugged', enable autosave, save settings
Then change unibios settings, open OSD for it to save to sd

#

Should stick

nocturne storm
#

i will try. thanks

#

but this only with AES unibios dip settings or with MVS service menu dip settings?

zinc sandal
#

Hmm, think I've only changed stuff like blood in MVS mode

#

The [dip] settings option

nocturne storm
#

ok so then you mean change settings in the service mode because in MVS hardware mode you don't have dip settings option in the unibios menu.

zinc sandal
#

Ok, the Uni bios 4.0 menu that the [dip] settings option brings up when in MVS mode
Which has the blood option you mentioned

nocturne storm
#

that menu is actually from the MVS itself, you can also access it on a normal non unibios machine by pressing the test button.

zinc sandal
#

Ok, but do the steps get the settings you wanted to persist after reboot?

nocturne storm
#

im checking

mossy pulsar
#

Iv had the same mister setup for years, but lately when I try to load any Neo Geo games they take FOREVER. Noticed it late last year…..Depending on the size of game, it takes between 1-5 minutes. I know this was not always the case as I remember the games loading within a matter of seconds before. There’s no other core that even comes close to taking that long to load.

Is anyone else experiencing the same thing or know what the solution may be?

gritty yoke
mossy pulsar
#

I remember the folders taking a moment to populate the list, but the rom load times were never like this. First time it happened I thought it had crashed because it was on a black screen for well over a minute before showing any loading progress. There is definite correlation between the size of rom and load time though. Ms3 takes 5+ minutes whereas andro dunos only takes around 2min.

I tried some Neo cd games out of curiosity and those load immediately with no issues.

timid cobalt
#

nice

limber atlas
#

Great surprise!

#

One thing that I've noticed, I think it is better if the core defaults to "Joystick only", rather than "Joystick & Spinner".

timid cobalt
#

yeah... strikers 1945 plus i think has issues with spinner on if you have a controller that has an accelerometer

#

or was it the dualsense joystick

#

been so long since i mentioned that issue

#

in general people should have to turn on the spinner as an option if they want it typically i would think

limber atlas
#

A+B+C input rarely works during unibios 4 screen if you have joystick + spinner option

timid cobalt
#

oh weird

#

that i didn't know

timid cobalt
#

i just use the explicit mapping for ABC

#

i start a game, do select+start, then go down to soft reboot and press my ABC button

#

and hold it

limber atlas
#

Also, some issues with button inputs during intro in neo turf masters with joystick + spinner

limber atlas
#

You select game -> unibios 4 screen appears -> press ABC

#

I'll try to confirm this when I'm back from my travels

austere nymph
#

Neotris (beta 2) is playable for 4 players also

timid cobalt
#

i've never been able to get into the menu from launching the game and pressing abc

#

it doesn't respond for me

#

you always have to hold ABC on boot in my experience

#

just tested with twinkle star sprites, yeah... unfortunately still have to do the soft reboot from the in game menu from unibios

#

okay just did it with a reset and apply from osd, maybe it's got a really tight window or something

#

either way, it's been easiest for me to just hold ABC when selecting soft reboot

bitter spire
timid cobalt
#

if it's above 95% or something, i could see issues like this happening with the neogeo core

#

does it take a long time to load the Cave core games? like dodonpachi?

spice cradle
#

Neo Geo roms are the slowest to load for me but they take like 7-10 seconds at most

timid cobalt
#

are you using .neo or mame romsets?

spice cradle
#

There is clearly some read struggle

timid cobalt
#

they are the largest things that get loaded into SDRAM out of any core

#

the 128MB sdram module was made to replace the 32MB SDRAM module just for this core

#

the SDRAM load is slower than DDR3, cave uses DDR3 as an intermediary to then speed up loading to SDRAM just like the neo geo core so i was mostly wondering if the same behavior happens there, since not a lot of cores do that same thign on such big files and the cave roms are fairly large

#

cd core loading like neogeocd streams directly off the microsd so it doesn't have to preload

urban vector
#

I didn't realise Neo Geo multitap was even a thing, what games all supported it?

timid cobalt
#

the one game i linked

#

basically it was only on early location tests that had 4 player

#

the 4player jamma expansion board is a prototype

#

almost no one would have encountered it in the wild

#

i think it was done with two neo geo cabs originally during the location tests if i'm not mistaken

mossy pulsar
mossy pulsar
timid cobalt
#

yeah that's strange then if it's taking minutes for the neo geo core, never seen anything like that before

#

i agree to reset settings, get a new rbf, etc...

mossy pulsar
#

Guess I’ll erase it all and try fresh everything

#

Thank you

mossy pulsar
#

I deleted the RBF, settings, configs, etc. Everything except the ROM folder; no change 😦

mossy pulsar
#

I should also note, that after I load a game and then load another one, if I switch back to the first, it will load immediately like it is supposed to. Ex: Load MS1(LONG load time), then load MS3(long load time), then go back to MS1 its loads instantly.

It's great, every core should have the H/V CRT adjustments IMO :). I'm biased because i play most my games on an arcade CRT and i really don't want to fiddle with CRT knobs to resize a screen, especially when i have it perfect for consoles and CPS1/2 already i kind of want to leave the CRT as is and prefer to adjust in-core settings if they exist.

#

NeoGeo games are mostly good but a couple of games are a little wide so using H adjust to center a bit helps. Some games benefit from the V adjust to get the top and bottom rows both on screen.

i have a cart. the game is ok, has some battletoads vibes how you can hit enemies in the air and stuff. Unfortunately the cart never gives away its attract mode. So if i put it in my 4 slot neogeo, the machine cyles through games and stops on the vengence hunters game and never goes back to any of the other games in the multislot.

#

for neogeo enthusiasts not playing well in a real machine is a bit of an issue for me but hey you can call me picky or anal if you want 🙂

#

to clarify - a multislot neogeo plays the demos/attracts from each cart that is inserted in the machine, and loops around them. Vengence hunters blocks that and the demo/attract loop is stuck on the vengence hunters cart.

Is there a difference between the platforms? Like Neo geo has extra stuff or maybe updates via an sd card. I'm just guessing it could even do that of course.

Just played it on steam and the playing mechanics are very good. Seriously piss poor graphics options though. The filters are worthless and it doesn't even have smoothing so it looks blocky and rough. They are taking the piss for £20, let alone £400 for a cart. Cheeky mofo's.

#

Even the art style with leaves blowing is worse than Ghosts and Ghouls. For a modern neo geo game it lacks polish.

pretty much any new game on a neogeo cart will be expensive, also it looks pretty nice on a CRT in a cab. I've got a preorder on final vendetta which isn't cheap either, i hear they're shipping now but i haven't recieved my cart yet

I’m convinced the only reason why Neo geo carts are hundreds of dollars is because people are willing to pay for it. I’d love to know the actual manufacturing costs of a Neo geo repro cart.

I think today they don't have the advantage of mass producing something for neogeo. Back in the day there were more neogeo "customers" because the arcade machines were everywhere so they could use whatever company was mass producing the carts. I grew up in the blue mountains in australia and there was a neogeo arcade machine at my local video shop. If there was one at my local shops in a tiny town there must of been a LOT of them world wide.

If you get the MVS version, you might have to change the label side because each MVS motherboard handles the cart differently. The fact that they made it able to be swapped is actually a perk and something other companies need to do as well. I think from the lack of understanding these things you might not be super familiar with NeoGeo hardware so it's understandable, but trust me, it's pretty top notch as far as hardware goes.

There's something ironic about how the MVS Neo Geo was meant to save money with the interchangeable cartridges, while the AES Neo Geo was expensive because of the hardware and cartridges.

I still dont get why game devs are obsessed relasing these retro pixelated graphics when they could make them look so much better. They then give you crap crt filters to imitate an old TVs. Tmnt shredder revenge is a prime example.

willow girder

Modern retro games don’t look good because they aren’t under the forced constraints of the old hardware, so despite their efforts, unless their game is like 16 megabits it’s going to look modern but trying to look retro.

Not accounting for the program/emulator/framework

Xenocrisis got this right.

crimson rivet
urban vector
#

Hmm, I wonder what Sorg's rationale was there

ocean phoenix
crimson rivet
#

My guess as to the reason why was that it was an unnecessary addition and would confuse end users between using MRA files and a standard set like the Dark Rom set

#

MGL files can be placed in the arcade folder so I think that was the rationale

ocean phoenix
#

What would MRA loading bring to Neo Geo. I’ve also got my entire Neo Geo set loading with MGL and using the Neo Geo core with setname variant so it’s arcade settings are applied,

#

Yeah all in the arcade folder too

#

maybe MRA bypasses the need for using setname?

urban vector
#

For anyone with a cabinet it would have everything automatically downloaded and set up the same way as every other arcade is probably the main one

ocean phoenix

Ohhh nice makes sense.

urban vector

Update all is a godsend for grabbing everything needed to go off and play the arcade cores, it makes it so simple. If we didn't have this then I imagine for a lot of users arcades wouldn't get a look in. It is great to not have to do anything and have them all there at your fingertips, ready to play.

slow grail

Update_all makes the mister so much more accessible. The idea that I would have to manually track and update cores from a ton of different devs is just overwhelming - it’s what kept me away from the mister for so long. update all just takes that road block away

Which is a massive help for people who aren’t familiar with that.

I even learned basic python to make a script to check my folders had the right files in there. robust temple
#

CPS changer was a console version of CPS1 but we still get all the CPS games in the arcade folder 😛

bitter spire
#

At the end of the day the differences between the MVS and AES are superficial anyway, so it feels kind of pointless to pull hairs over how the core should handle the ROMs.

robust temple
#

i'm not really complaining about how the core handles roms, just how we decided to organise the games

#

in the mister menu

bitter spire
#

Though treating the core like an AES system does make slightly more sense since the core also supports Neo Geo CD.

robust temple
#

we have all the other mame games in arcade by default, except neogeo is by default in console, and i may be a nitpicky guy, but neogeo is arcade to me lol

urban vector
#

Because AES and MVS are so similar, I am more curious why the ability to also load the games via MRA was rejected and wound up being in a fork. Maybe there are space issues in the core? I don't know, but since if is clearly doable to add support I am wondering the rationale behind rejecting the PR

robust temple
#

i can only assume because MRAs usually point to unique rbfs (cores), so like CPS1/2 etc have a seperate core per game due to minor differences in the boards

#

although they can't be that different, as i own a darksoft CPS2 multi which is 1 A motherboard + a B board that is modified

urban vector
#

I don't think that is the issue, the MVS boards all play all the games via carts

robust temple
#

thats what i mean though - because it plays the games via carts, its a single rbf for neogeo

urban vector
#

It isn't a situation where certain games had daughter boards etc

robust temple
#

i don't think sorg wanted multiple MRAs for a single RBF (core)

urban vector
#

Yeah, so in Blackwine's fork the mra files all play off the same Neo Geo core that is a tweaked version of the one in Main (how different I don't know)

#

Lots of other arcade cores are the one .rbf and multiple games as mra files running off it

robust temple
#

hmm is there? are you sure?

urban vector
#

Like the IREM cores, and what STV is doing

robust temple
#

ah yeah you're right irem is

slow grail
#

Yeah, it’s pretty common with arcade games.

#

Fairyland Tale is like 4 games, aren’t cps 1 and 2 both single rbf files?

robust temple
#

neogeo was before all that though so maybe its a case of those cores not having consoles

#

but yeah still kind of a weird decision to me, considering neogeo was my faverote arcade 🙂

#

literally no one i knew owned a neogeo console growing up, i only saw them in gaming magazines and drooled over them

urban vector
#

I don't mind playing the games as if it is a console, but I see the use case for wanting them as arcade games with mra files like all the other cores as well, especially if you had a MiSTer in an arcade cabinet, and since update all would just grab all the games for you

robust temple
#

yeah exactly and update all doesn't grab neogeo games as a result, even though they're all in that same mame collection that the other games are grabbed from

#

maybe it's because the core needs the unencrypted roms which arn't the mameset

limber atlas
#

Well, from Sorgs point of view, he sees neogeo as a console core vs arcade core.

#

Added benefit is probably rom patching being easier

Ok so, the MGL files I created expect a folder called “NeoGeoMVS” in your games directory.

#

The only thing those MGL files do is utilize the setname command to give the core a new name when using that MGL file. That way you can give the core new options to set it up as an arcade core. Save files aren’t interchangeable between AES and MVS modes.

#

You can open MGL files in a text editor to see what they do.

#

I suggest you do a symbolic link from your NEOGEO folder to NeoGeoMVS. So you don’t need to copy over any games.

And perhaps it's useful to give a little context for my use case.

I'm using Mister in my arcade cabinet with an Irken JAMMA expander. It's working great for arcade cores, but for Neo Geo the controls don't work for both players. The JAMMA expander defaults to "keyboard" setting which I think is based on the standard MAME keyboard mapping, so that might not be a thing for Neo Geo?

It is possible to switch to a gamepad setting on the expander, but it's not ideal since it means opening the machine and fiddling with the PCB. So my hope is that by using the MGL method it will be possible to just "plug and play" without the need to switch modes on the expander.

J1 pin 3 looks like it is used for detection if the 4 card is present. It forces button A on (I think) for default player or button B on for alternate player again for both sets. Just need to know how J1 bits 1 and 3 are controlled and hook it all up.

# slow grail yeah, names.txt just felt like it was always just confusing things

This is not a names.txt issue. Names.txt has entries for arcade_neogeo, arcade_sms for three years, but also entries for neogeo and sms. The names.txt got alphabetically resorted recently and it is an issue of the MiSTer-UI that it picks the first [xyz]_sms entry to match the core name that does not even start with "arcade". I will remove these two arcade entries for now, they might be old relics, but this will stay an issue if there are cores being named in that fashion. It needs to be fixed in the MiSTer-UI.

In general it would be helpful to raise such issues properly instead of complaining in such an uneducated manner.

slow grail
# blissful pelican This is not a names.txt issue. Names.txt has entries for arcade_neogeo, arcade_s...

I think maybe I both wasn't clear and that you're misunderstanding the context around this comment as it's not a complaint.

Names.txt, when troubleshooting, can confuse things (thinking specifically of Genesis and Genesis(Old)). Because I don't run it, it can add an additonal translation layer when trying to get to the bottom of an issue. That isn't to say that I think it's not a worthwhile addition to the platform, but it can make troubleshooting more confusing depending on the situation.

I apologize if that comment offended you as that was certainly not my intention.

blissful pelican
# slow grail I think maybe I both wasn't clear and that you're misunderstanding the context a...

I agree that names.txt can make things confusing when people are not fully aware of it and just auto-download it with update_all.

As for feeling offended, I apologize for the outburst, it was unfair to aim that at you and there was indeed a misunderstanding. My frustration is based on the stark limitations of the MiSTer-UI making it difficult to keep a nice and coherent set of names that are not scrolling. I do my best to research what a good name would be - which is a matter of taste, too and can be argued over - and how to keep naming consistent. I look in here on a regular note to find out if there are issues or new cores, because most people do not contact me, I stumble over them when somebody complaints or gets snarky here on the Discord - which happens much more often than any positive remarks of course. So well, that gets quite frustrating at times, but I am glad that Moondandy at least tags me when there is an update needed.

Only thing I can suggest is the usual stuff like making sure you map it in main first (finishing the entire mapping process), and then mapping it in the Neo Geo core afterwards.

Hi all. Just set up my first Mister. I have a NeoGeo big red four slot that I’m planning to put it in.

Maybe some MGL shenanigans?

@ocean phoenix is the resident MGL guru. I don't know if something like that could auto boot though.

If not I can always go NFC but be nice not to have to depend on that.

Uhhh maybe set this in the ini:
bootcore=neogeo

and name the game you want to auto load “boot.rom”

Yeah doesn’t work. I can boot to the core using the exact core option but the core itself doesn’t seem to look for boot.rom

robust temple

its like having a multislot neogeo with a slot for every game :). Also the script stops cycling games when you start playing one so it works really well (and it can start cycling them again based on a timer after you stop playing one)

#

You can get the script to download from the update_all script settings

ocean phoenix
#

@robust temple can you make Super Attract Mode instantly launch on boot up?

robust temple
#

well you can set the timer as low as you want so yes, but i haven't checked in a while as to if the time between games is seperate or not

#

so the behvious might be that you get the mister menu and 1 second later a neogeo game starts

ocean phoenix
#

If so then that’s a great idea. Might give him what he wants.

robust temple
#

you can see the commands the script sends on the bash prompt so theoretically you could put a simple bash script on the linux part to do it for a certain game, seperate to the SAM script

Moving the discussion here (what is left of it). We are thinking about moving the turbo core out of the alt core database. We could put it in the WIP database. We could pin it here (and the forums). We could do both. The thinking is that having any update_all-enjoyer having access to a core that honestly barely works is silly. Especially since the experience is not anywhere near the n64 and PSX turbo cores.

#

I suspect most folks don’t care - but I also suspect some have strong opinions

ocean phoenix
#

I personally don't want to pin it, I mean if people want it I will, but I don't like directing people to something that's extremely broken. Even if we put up instructions and explanations, people won't read it.

#

It's a fun little curio that works with one game. If there can be a Turbo core made with more stability then amazing, but promoting a broken build because it somehow makes one game run better isn't a good precedent.

#

all in my opinion of course, if people disagree or I'm wrong then no problem

#

About H/V adjustment: it's applicable only for Arcade and other non-TV cores as they originally have no TV modes originally. For Console cores it's required to make a correct matching to real HW video output.

I know the Darksoft romset is the set that works but does anyone know what about this set is special? I’d love to do a 1g1r set, my understanding is the Darksoft set has dupes.

#

But I also don’t know jack about Mame romesets so “go read about it” is a fine response.

clever osprey
# plucky gyro I know the Darksoft romset is the set that works but does anyone know what about...

Neo Geo cartridges typically have P (68000 program), C (graphics), V (ADPCM samples), M (Z80 program) and S (fix layer) roms. MAME rom sets have those separate roms zipped in a file. One of the advantages here is that a different version of the same game shares most of the data. Often the only different files are the P and M roms, which are very small compared to graphics and sample data. So, say a MAME game parent (MVS) is 80MB, it may only need 1MB of extra data for the other version.

The darksoft/neosd roms have everything in a single .neo file and all data is duplicated between the different versions.

Example estimates:
MAME split - kof98.zip contents: 86MB
MAME split - kof98h.zip contents: 1.25MB (yay)
Darksoft - kof98.neo: 88MB
Darksoft - kof98h.neo: 87MB (oh no)

I don't know exactly why the darksoft roms are "special", but I imagine parsing ZIPs comes with some overhead and the .neo files have everything laid out the way the hardware expects. This is much more suitable for a flash cart or FPGA.

plucky gyro
#

Thank you for this detailed explanation!!

#

The library is small enough where I could probably just dedupe manually.

ocean phoenix
#

I did zips originally and I now have the Darksoft romaet and there’s been no perceivable difference between the two
